    Mint wasabi shrimp bites
    Avril S.

Expensive and mediocre. Tea was $10 for a pot with no refills. On the bright side, the tea was not over-brewed. Soup dumplings tasted overwhelmingly of cooking wine. String beans were okay but missed the mark on crunchiness. Chongqing chicken was not spicy at all and just tasted like popcorn chicken. It was essentially a shell of what this dish is supposed to be in Chinese cuisine. The full course dish was also too large for two people (assuming sharing multiple dishes family-style). Would recommend the app size unless 4+ people are sharing. The mint and wasabi shrimp bites were basically honey walnut shrimp with a tiny bit of wasabi flavor. The mint was only incorporated in the dehydrated mint leaves scattered on top. These were cute but added nothing in the manner of flavor. The interior had some cute decor but it was swelteringly hot on an august day and there was hardly any AC on inside. I am always cold but felt uncomfortably hot the whole time and was just dying to finish eating and leave.

Szechuan restaurant at the row near DTLA. Tons of parking and very cute area with a lot of different shops. Have tried almost everything on their menu so far. Their beef noodle soup I would pass on wasn't great and I wasn't a big fan of their broth. Soup dumplings are great as an app to share and highly recommend the crispy chicken and the string beans and fried rice. My friend is a pescatarian and also really enjoyed the soft shell crab. Food always comes out fresh have been tempted a few times to try their dessert but am always too full from dinner hahah. Only downside is this place does not serve any alcohol so we get a drink at the oyster bar next door first before coming here.

A cute Chinese restaurant inside Row DTLA We visited on a Sunday around 2pm and I made a reservation in advance but the restaurant looked pretty empty. The ambiance of the restaurant is very modern yet has Chinese accents. Chongqing crispy chili chicken: I liked how they had a small size for us to try. Nicely crispy and spicy Mapo tofu: my favorite menu. Loved that it had mala (dumbing) taste and spicy. A side of rice is a must! Green beans: recommend getting it to pair with all dishes Spicy wontons in chili oil: similar to DTF's. Tasty Overall, the foods were good and service was great. Reminded me of pine & crane but more Chinese flavors added. Parking is free for 2 hours. Willing to be back to try other menu

    Dan dan noodles

If you're looking for authentic Chinese food, this place is a must. Everything we ordered was amazing. The Dan Dan noodles were so creamy and flavorful, and the pineapple sweet and sour chicken was delicious. My favorite dish by far was the crispy chili chicken. It was absolutely incredible and cooked perfectly. The sparkling apple tea was surprisingly one of my favorite drinks. It was so refreshing and light. I also really love the hot oolong tea. For dessert, the chocolate lava dumplings were absolutely phenomenal. The matcha ice cream mousse cake was also excellent, and you could tell it was made with real matcha powder because it had that rich, slightly powdery texture that authentic matcha has. Overall, this is an amazing restaurant with great service, a beautiful atmosphere, and an awesome location in the heart of ROW DTLA. I can't wait to come back.

We came here last night for dinner and was excited since I've heard great things so far. We ordered: - mapo tofu - while tasty, this was not authentic in the slightest. It was missing peppercorn which is a key ingredient for this classic sichuan dish. It also just tasted more westernized and not as spicy - green beans - these were fantastic and we devoured these - chili chicken - this was also fantastic. Very crispy and tasted authentic. Not too spicy though - spicy braised short ribs - unfortunately this was not spicy in the slightest. The waitress kept saying it was spicy and too spicy for her so we ordered it but we tasted 0 spice. The beef was tender but this was pretty much the most disappointing dish out of the bunch Overall, get the green beans and the chicken. The mapo tofu was good but not authentic so it's less spicy and numbing so if your spice tolerance is low, this is a good substitute. Forget about the braised short ribs. It was also the most expensive dish too. Honestly if you want classic sichuan flavors - spicy and numbing - this place is not that. None of the dishes had that. However if you want just tasty Chinese food then come here.

This place is located at Row DTLA so parking in the structure is free for 2 hours. Came with 3 others around 1:30 pm on a Friday and were seated right away. The inside of the restaurant is decorated so beautifully and the smell of the food was so nostalgic. We ordered way too much food for 4 girls but we wanted to try so many things. For appetizers, we got the Chongqing Crispy Chili Chicken ($18), Mint-Wasabi Shrimp Bites ($22), and Mala Crispy Soft Shell Crab ($26). The stand out dish was the soft shell crab. It was fried perfectly and so flavorful with the perfect amount of spice. The shrimp bites were unique because of how they battered it and the wasabi gave it a nice kick. The chicken was great too and came with a lot for sharing. For our mains, we ordered the Dan Dan Noodle ($15), Dry-Fried String Beans ($17.50), Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Wings ($22), Spicy Wontons in Chili Oil ($12), and Spicy Braised Beef Short Ribs ($46). The most unique dish was the chicken wings and they were fantastic. We've never had anything like it and really enjoyed it. The string beans were the best string beans we've ever had - not exaggerating. They were cooked perfectly and the seasoning they used worked so well together. The short ribs were also amazing in flavor and the meat was so tender and fell right off the bones. The noodles and wontons were good but everything else stood out way more. Rice was $2.50 a bowl and we just shared one and it was enough for us. When our bill came, it came with pieces of white rabbit candy - such a cute touch! Our total was just under $200 but we had so much food left over to take home. I 100% recommend this place and will definitely be back!

I was excited to celebrate my birthday here, and it definitely lived up to the anticipation. This is such a cute, upscale Chinese restaurant located in LA's Chinatown. The restaurant has a stylish atmosphere that feels elevated while still being welcoming. It was very busy during my visit, which speaks to its popularity, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation if they allow if you plan to dine here.

Kar Son might be the best Chinese food in LA proper right now. The dishes are refined while staying true to traditional flavors. What we tried, ranked from our absolute favorites to the least (though honestly, everything was great) 1. Chong qing chicken 2. Stir fried beef with pickled chilis 3. Fried rice with Chinese sausage 4. Salted egg wings 5. Mapo tofu 6. Shrimp wasabi bites It's also one of the few places in LA where you can get premium sparkling tea, which pairs perfectly with the meal. A great addition to ROW DTLA.

So glad we walked in! Modern Chinese decor with the most comfortable chairs. The staff were knowledgeable, patient, and best recommendations. We ordered lots to share & try. This is Szechuan Taiwanese dishes. With Szechuan, the heat is in the back and it was delicious. *Wood ear Mushroom Salad: perfectly crunchy, love the savory sweet sauce. *Crispy Tofu: light and traditional Taiwanese. The green pepper sauce was our favorite with a smoky flavor. Perfect on fish *Soft Shell Crab: a plate full of chili have to hunt for the delicious crabs *Dan Dan noodles: refreshing *Clay Pot tomato slow, braised beef: omg, rice is a must with this dish. The beef is melt in mouth tender, tomato sweet, a must try *Dumplings: savory & chocolate dumplings must order * whole Bronzino: Star of the show!! Tender and juicy. We'll be back to try other dishes Oh. Beautiful restrooms they even give you mouthwash.

map todu, cripsy chicken (s), and cucumber salad

super yummy! We got crispy chicken (s), mapo tofu, and cucumber salad. Cucumber salad was okay but the other two dishes were great. The chicken wasn't as spicy as I thought it would be but still super great and the texture was perfect. We also had the string beans (not pictured) and it was perfectly seasoned (i liked it as someone who doesnt eat veggies) The service can be a little slow although they were attentive. I loved the interior. It's such a cute place. !! I would def recommend to make reservation !!

Made a resy for Wednesday night at 7:30 PM and got seated immediately -- no wait at all. You could get free 2 hour validated parking at the lot, and then I google mapped the place to find it. I put "birthday" in the special occasion notes and they surprised my friend with a free drink!!. The kindness!! They only serve non-alcoholic drinks here, the waitress said they're still waiting on their alcoholic license, but they are so, so good. One of the best drinks I've had at a restaurant, alcoholic or not. We got the mapo tofu, the chili chicken (buried under a mountain of dried chilies), the spicy wontons in chili oil, garlic green beans, and the Chinese sausage fried rice with egg. Every single dish was great but my top dish was the mapo tofu. The silkiness of the tofu, the depth of the sauce, the perfect level of spice and numbing heat -- it was everything!! I kept going back for more spoonfuls even when I was already full. The ambiance is cozy and dim without being too dark, the noise level was just right for actual conversation, and the decor with the paper lanterns gave such warm, intimate vibes. This place is good for a casual dinner with friends but I would even go here for business dinners because the atmosphere and interior design is really nice as well. I will definitely be back again for their alcoholic drinks menu.

The Row DTLA has a smattering of good eateries tucked into its vast complex of repurposed industrial buildings (formerly the LA Terminal Market). Kar Son is one of the newer ones; Hayato and Kato both have 2 Michelin stars. And the open-air food market Smorgasburg is here on Sundays. Kar Son served Chinese/Taiwanese food from a variety of regions. I think Kar Son is the chef/owner's name. It's a pretty space, nicely done, with lots of natural light, long and narrow as are most eateries here, given the layout of the original buildings. There is an outdoor dining area also. My late-ish lunch visit did not start well. There was no host; the waiters (there were 2) do double-duty, causing a bit of a wait. Once seated, service was decent, and the food came out fairly quickly. Note the same menu is offered at lunch and dinner. Also, they do not (yet?) have a liquor license. They have a pretty wide seasonal tea selection--iced, hot and sparkling. I ordered 6 dishes and had lots of leftovers. 1) Salted egg yolk corn. Corn kernels lightly battered/egg-yolked and fried. Tasty, but I doubt the corn was fresh. 2) Mint-wasabi shrimp bites. A unique spin on honey-walnut shrimp in that the shrimp is similarly battered and fried. The sauce seemed mayonnaise-based but with a distinct but not overpowering wasabi kick. Fried mint leaves added texture and flavour. 3) Shrimp chow mein. A traditional well-done preparation with smallish shrimp and large pieces of fried egg. The veggies were sliced more finely than usual, exhibiting more finessed knife-work. 4) Soup dumplings (xiao long bao). Pretty traditional, perhaps larger than Din Tai Fung's. The traditional soy-vinegar-ginger dipping sauce was pre-prepared and in a dish. I like the silver spoons Kar Son has--they are wide and thin enough to scoop up a dumpling without tearing--much easier than a traditional Chinese soup spoon. 5) Sweet and sour chicken. My go-to order when comparing Chinese restaurants. Kar Son's version was fine, appropriately neon-orange in colour. There was lots of pineapple, red and green bell peppers, but no onions. 6) Mapo tofu. Another traditional preparation, fortunately not too spicy and slightly sweet, but there was the usual numbing sensation from the Schezwan peppers. My beverage of choice was a Taiwanese apple sparkling tea, which was offered like a wine--by the glass or bottle. A refreshing mix of apple and tea. Overall a nice meal, upscale in terms of food and ambiance. Hopefully there's a dedicated host in the future.

Attempt at elevated Chinese food was short due to several factors- food taste mainly dependent on spiciness, really thin portions of meat. The decor and waitstaff were really awesome, it was just the taste of the food didn't meet the prices except for the fried rice.

It was a but busy when we got there but luckily we got seared pretty shortly after arrival. We originally wanted to sit at the bar, but opted for a table for less wait time. When first looking at the menu we were shocked by the prices. I knew immediately i wanted to get the hui tou potstikers with pork and noodles. We ended up adding on the hongkong style wontons too. To my suprise the wontons arrived in a delicious and warm broth, keeping them perfectly moist and plump. The broth was so delicious even on a hot day, tasting faintly of sesame and scallion. Despite both dishes being pork they were so different and equally amazing in flavor. The pan fried potstikers which were CRISPED TO PERFECTION especially reminded me of black bean shortribs that you get from dimsum, fatty but hearty and had me wanting more and more each bite. The minced pork noodles were to no suprise, so good. Noodles tasted fresh, the sauce was umami with mushrooms and pork. While im not the biggest fan of mushrooms, i still ate it up. I feel it would be so good with some picked cabbage too to complement the saltiness. Most notable thing... THAT CHILI OIL. We probably used almost half the jar left at the table. It wasnt spicy at all, but it had this flavor that i genuinely have never tasted before. The texture of the chilli and sesame and the nutty flavor had me in awe. Enough to take two jars home... i would do it again. Servers were so quick, made sure everything we needed was at the table. Regardless of the crowd we were met with promptness and generosity. This that wonton place your girl tells you not to worry about forreal. Will be coming back despite the long drive from home.

Everything was prepared wonderfully and had tremendous flavor. I recommend trying their Hui Tou, stuffed with pork or beef, pork and leek pancakes, they also have vegetarian options. Their pork shumai was delicious, xiao long bao's soup dumplings were flavorful. Delicious. I definitely need a second trip here to try their soups and more of their variety of dumplings.
