Slippery Shrimp, Yang Chow Fried Rice, Mongolian beef

We went to Universal Studio's and decided to make a pit stop at Yang Chow's with our kiddos. They are normally picky eaters but they really enjoyed their meal. We started with the sizzling rice soup and then slippery shrimp, Yang Chow Fried Tice and Mongolian beef. Lot of food and we took left overs. Service was excellent and they were extremely attentive. Our son said their Thai tea was the best he had. Of the items, the sizzling rice did not break apart that much so although good but not my favorite of the dishes. We enjoyed it and when we are back and hungry, come back.

Oh my goodness! This was truly a surprising treat. A few friends invited me too grab a late lunch. As soon as I walked in, I could smell the fantastic aroma's throughout the place! It was clean and quite a few people dining. The food was extremely tasty! (Shrimp, Noodles, Orange & Kung Pao chicken) I am not able to describe the perfection of the fried shrimp!! My mouth is watering right now just talking about it!! Lol The rice (with small traces of veggies?) was just mediocre. I'm not quite sure if there was a specific ask because the food was already ordered by time I got there. But the sweet-and-sour sauce was very tasty over the shrimp and added it to the rice. On top of delicious food, we had the most amazing server! He was polite, funny, & checked on us often! I highly recommend it.

We visited LA's Chinatown on a Sunday evening and passed by Yang Chow. There was a paper waiting list that was filled with names, so we decided to walk around Chinatown Central Plaza a bit before deciding to eat here. We were seated right away around 7:30pm on a Sunday. Photos adorned the walls of the numerous celebrity guests, so you know it's a classic spot! We ordered the slippery shrimp and mixed pan-fried noodles (shrimp, chicken, and beef). The food was prepared very quickly. I enjoyed the slippery shrimp ($24.50). I don't do spicy, and we were able to order the slippery shrimp with the chili oil on the side. The shrimp is battered, fried, and tossed in a sweet and sour sauce (and chili oil for a kick, unless you opt out like I did). You get a mountain of shrimp! It is definitely family-style portions. I wasn't a big fan of the pan-fried noodles ($19.25). I'm more used to Cantonese style, and Yang Chow specializes in Mandarin and Szechuan style. The noodles were more thick and chewy (think lo mein) than pan-fried and crunchy/crispy, and it quickly turned soggy from the brown gravy. Service was good overall, and we were given fortune cookies with the check. Service - 4 stars; food - 3.5 stars, but pretty ordinary for LA... nothing worth going out of your way for.

Yang Chow is a LA institution, having been around for so long thanks to its standard, yet consistent Chinese food. Granted, it mostly caters to a non-Chinese crowd, but being Chinese myself, I think it's still a solid choice for dining out while in the neighborhood. I went with a small group, and we ordered the famous slippery shrimp (crispy-battered and, yes, slippery), orange chicken, sauteed green beans, and Yang Chow fried rice. The portions were more than generous, enough to take home as leftovers. Although the dishes aren't necessarily innovative, they taste solid and represent the true essence of Americanized-Chinese cuisine (a genre in itself). Service was also really nice and efficient, and overall, I approve of Yang Chow!

Tried this place out with a coworker for lunch on a Thursday. They just opened so there was no wait and we parked on the street. Ambiance was busy Chinese restaurant with muffled chatter. Good service overall- they were quick with bringing the water and food and taking our orders. We got their slippery shrimp ($24) and yang chow fried rice ($18). Portions are big that we had leftovers. The shrimp was fried perfectly and the sauce is really yummy, slightly sweet and tangy. You can ask them to adjust the spice.

Went to Yang Chow on a Sunday had to wait outside for them to open the doors at 11:30 and it was totally worth it. This place is excellent and got four entrées for less than 100 bucks and would return. Please keep up the good work.

This is my second time at Yang Chow. Wait time is fast, the service is pleasant. The food is 10/10. The food is filling. The flavors are there. I have no complaints. This is a solid Chinese restaurant, and the dishes are very clean. The chicken fried rices is a solid choice for someone who is a picky eater.

This is our favorite Chinese restaurant hands down. It's in the heart of Chinatown which is a vibe just itself. We came with family/friends around noon on a Thursday. They do have parking right behind the property. It's basically free but I usually give them $5 - $10 for parking .Because, why not and your car is literally safe there. It was a party of eight of us and we came early. I recommend coming early because it does get crowded. We ordered a little bit of everything. We enjoyed, shrimp fried rice, chicken fried rice, slippery shrimp, broccoli, slippery chicken, fried spring rolls, and more. The food was delicious and top tier. Everything was served family style and the portions were huge. We had plenty of leftovers to take with us. Last, thank you to the wonderful staff. Everyone is extremely kind and professional. Our personal favorite is Benny. Benny, is extremely helpful ,and funny as hell. Thank Yang Chow for the magnificent experience.

The food came out right away. The servers were on it. And everything was delicious and at a good price. For $95 that included 3 plates of different meats, rice. It fed 3 of us and plenty for lunch tomorrow. They even gave us an extra rice to go. Love that!

Yang Chow is always a great stop in Chinatown. The food is so good the fried rice, dumplings, and string beans are all must orders. Their Slippery Shrimp, which is one of their most famous dishes, is a must-try too. The Kung Pao, Chow Mein are also super popular and never disappoint. The service is attentive even when the place is packed, and it's almost always crowded, but honestly the wait is worth it every time. I also love looking at all the celebrity photos on the wall, it gives the restaurant that classic, old school Chinatown charm.

So so good. The food is incredible and the service is amazing. Pictures of the food do not do it justice. Really good beef lo mein and loved the 3 ingredient kung pao (beef, shrimp, chicken). Make sure you order the hot tea. It's also nice they serve alcohol. I can't wait for my next meal at Yang Chow!

Not a single asian customer when we get here. We were so confused because they had really high ratings. The food was ok, I like the soup

Yang Chow has many delicious options to choose from. Everything is well portioned and the service is friendly. The restaurant was busy when going, but that seems to be the norm of this spot. It was cool seeing all the celebs on the wall too!

    Do they take reservations?

    Yes

How busy is on Saturday afternoon... like 4..5 pm?

Extremely, I always find a line right around the block. I usually take my pillows and sleeping bag just to get in around 4 pm.

    Does your restaurant allow byob?

Hi,I don't know if this restaurant allows byob. You can reach Management at (213) 625-0811.

Is it open during "Xmas" hungry atheist wondering?

It is, actually, but can get very busy so go early!! Enjoy and Merry Christmas - or maybe happy Saturnalia!!

Are there any gluten free options?

    Yes!

    Are service dogs allowed?

I believe so but I would call ahead.

Is there a full bar? Specialty cocktail menu perhaps?

    Beer and wine! Enjoy 🥂

Does Yang Chow use a lot of peanuts in their dishes?

Not sure how you measure "a lot" but I would say no. There are some dishes with peanuts but not what I consider a lot.

How much is parking? Just tip of your choosing?

The restaurant will validate. It's $2 and I always leave a tip too!

Do you serve Zhe'ergen salad (fish mint root salad)? I am looking for this dish everywhere! If not, do you know where to find it locally?

Hi I do not eat seafood as I'm allergic to it but what I would do is look at their menu very large. I'm sure you could find something that you would like. I thought the food was absolutely delicious

Do they offer any party trays?

Give them a call as I don't live in Los Angeles just went up there for the day to eat there.

Is yang chow open on Christmas? 2021

Yes. You definitely need a reservation.

    Do they take reservations?

The only reservations they take is at the door. We had to wait 30 minutes to get in. Well worth the wait.

Will Yang Chow be open on Christmas Day 2021?

    Yes

Weird question/request. I need to transport the food and don't want to get it soggy. Can I get Slippery Chicken or Shrimp with sauce on the side? Or will they judge me?

    No clue

Hi! is it possible to make advance reservation, like this saturday jan. 25?

I am not sure if they do advanced reservations but I used yelp to add my party of 7 to the queue and we were seated exactly when it said we would be.

Do they add msg to their food as of 2020?

    Yes of course

Does this place serve any alcohol besides beer?

    Yes

Does Yang Chow deliver or do they partner with a food delivery service?

    Postmates

Is there a certain time fir dimsum?

I don't think they serve dim sum here.

It was a but busy when we got there but luckily we got seared pretty shortly after arrival. We originally wanted to sit at the bar, but opted for a table for less wait time. When first looking at the menu we were shocked by the prices. I knew immediately i wanted to get the hui tou potstikers with pork and noodles. We ended up adding on the hongkong style wontons too. To my suprise the wontons arrived in a delicious and warm broth, keeping them perfectly moist and plump. The broth was so delicious even on a hot day, tasting faintly of sesame and scallion. Despite both dishes being pork they were so different and equally amazing in flavor. The pan fried potstikers which were CRISPED TO PERFECTION especially reminded me of black bean shortribs that you get from dimsum, fatty but hearty and had me wanting more and more each bite. The minced pork noodles were to no suprise, so good. Noodles tasted fresh, the sauce was umami with mushrooms and pork. While im not the biggest fan of mushrooms, i still ate it up. I feel it would be so good with some picked cabbage too to complement the saltiness. Most notable thing... THAT CHILI OIL. We probably used almost half the jar left at the table. It wasnt spicy at all, but it had this flavor that i genuinely have never tasted before. The texture of the chilli and sesame and the nutty flavor had me in awe. Enough to take two jars home... i would do it again. Servers were so quick, made sure everything we needed was at the table. Regardless of the crowd we were met with promptness and generosity. This that wonton place your girl tells you not to worry about forreal. Will be coming back despite the long drive from home.

That was my first mistake -- they don't even serve mu shu pork. That one's on me for not checking the menu first. I ended up getting my kung pao chicken and settled for the Mongolian beef, and veggie egg rolls. The Mongolian beef I could definitely pass on. The kung pao chicken was good at first, but somehow lost its flavor as the meal went on. The egg rolls were just okay. Nice and crispy on the outside, but too mushy on the inside for my liking. I was also pretty surprised (and a lot sad) that they didn't have hot mustard. The tea was really good though! Service was fine. The server was attentive, just clearly busy keeping up with all the takeout orders coming through. Ambience is definitely on the lower side here, so don't come expecting a nicer Chinese restaurant. Then I went back to Firstborn twice within three months. This newly listed 2025 tasting menu spot actually made me feel a little hopeful about LA fine dining again. The shiso with razor clam and beef cheek cochon, and the black cod with green Sichuan pepper mala noodles, are both full-on collisions between deep animal savoriness and sharp, vivid spice. Then dishes like roasted artichoke and morel stuffed with green peas bring the seasonality into clear focus. The menu is not huge, but every dish has a defined structure and a bold sense of movement. On paper, it reads a little mysterious and intimidating; once you eat it, everything suddenly makes perfect sense, and honestly, it gets addictive. The ingredient selection and handling are also seriously thoughtful. Take the aged duck main course. I am very much a "if there is duck on the fine dining menu, I'm ordering it" person, and I've had plenty of beautifully rich, tender duck breasts. But Firstborn's version, beyond being tender and luscious, had that Cantonese sense of "gan xiang" -- the sweet, savory aroma you get from naturally air-dried, aged meats. For a second, I had this flashback to going with my family as a kid to Xing Fu Lou in Wenquan for Lutian cured meats during winter solstice. Absurdly good. Calling it the Duck King of the West Coast does not feel excessive. On my second visit, the truffle and wild mushroom "gnudi" was also excellent. The moment it hit the table, that intense truffle aroma made me think of the deep, earthy punch of French Périgord black truffle. But then I thought, wait, where are they getting Périgord in June? Turns out they were using Australian winter truffle, perfectly in season. That sourcing logic is smart. It is not expensive for the sake of being expensive; it actually understands the flavor window. The fire-grilled lamb saddle on the second visit was just as strong. It preserved the soft, tender texture of the cut without losing that sweet, milky lamb flavor. Grilled over open flame to a rosy medium rare, the flavor, doneness, and ingredient choice all landed. To me, a great restaurant comes down to three things: concept, ingredients, and seasoning. Some fine dining places love making everything complicated, stacking seven or eight ingredients together, serving a dozen-plus courses, and by the end you feel exhausted and sleepy. Firstborn is the opposite. It is unconventional, but from amuse-bouche to dessert, every dish explains its own logic clearly. Final feeling after the meal: addictive, interesting, and absolutely worth coming back for.

My friend's cocktail tastes very so so too. The restaurant is nice and clean. We were there to celebrate a birthday, but we didn't know the restaurant doesn't have any candles. They didn't offer to sing a birthday song or anything for us. I really don't think we will come back again. Not recommended.

The room is simple but works well for a group. Service has been inconsistent the last few times I've come. Most recently at my dad's birthday dinner we ordered 5 dishes and the dishes came out one at a time, about 10 to 15 minutes apart. By the time the next dish arrived, we were already finishing the previous one. My brothers and I were joking that they must have a new cook that hasn't learned how to time cooking. At a Chinese Korean restaurant, meals are meant to be shared family style, with dishes arriving at the same time so everyone can enjoy them together. That did not happen, and it took away from the experience, especially for a birthday dinner. On a separate lunch visit, the service also felt inattentive. The waitress seemed annoyed when taking our order as well as when I asked for more water and side dishes, which again impacted the overall experience. The food is still the reason to come. But consistent service, proper dish timing, and basic hospitality matter. I've considered giving a three star rating based on the last two experiences, but since I've been coming here for nearly a decade, I'll leave it at four.

Had a family lunch here recently. Food was so not good, not sure how it has been around for 30-40…read moreyears. I used to come here a lot in 90's with my Dad, but hadn't been here in ages. We ordered bunch of stuff, tangsooyuk, rice soup (nooh-loong-ji soup), pal Bo chae, fried rice, jjamppong, jjajangmyun, and everything tasted off. Fried rice was ok, but it's hard to completely mess up fried rice. The rice soup was horrible, it had absolutely no flavor. It really tasted like they just poured hot water on some rice and that was it. The worst was the jjajangmyun, which is like the most basic menu at any Chinese-Korean restaurant. Noodles were over cooked and the sauce tasted weird. I couldn't eat half of it, and trust me, I finish my noodles in any dish. Very disappointed with our food, it kinda of dampened my memories of coming here ages ago. It is possible we went on an off day since it was Memorial Day wknd, and maybe the head chef had the weekend off... but either way, just not a good experience.
