From the moment we walk in, Elaine and Max recognize us and welcome us back with genuine warmth. That kind of hospitality is becoming rare, and it's one of the many reasons we keep returning. The food is consistently delicious, the prices are refreshingly reasonable, and the portions are generous enough that we always leave with leftovers for the next day. Every dish we've ordered has been fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. As movie fans, we also enjoy that Rush Hour starring Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan filmed a scene here. It's a fun piece of Hollywood history that gives the restaurant even more character. Whether you're a longtime local or visiting Chinatown for the first time, Foo Chow is well worth the stop. Probably favorite spot for some authentic Chinese food. They do not have their own parking spot so street parking or finding a parking lot it is. Most parking places you will have to pay. We came on a busy Sunday afternoon. Luckily we were able to be seated right away but upstairs. I will say it was more closed off, but the upstairs did have their own server to attend you. The service was OK. As you wait, they do bring a kettle of green tea to drink. Meanwhile, you wait for your food. So cute! My family and I spent the day in Chinatown- walked around to many of the shops which were friendly and reasonable. We were hungry and wanted authentic Chinese food and seen this place- apparently popular by Jackie Chan making a movie here. We were greeted as we walked in- served hot tea and given menus. We ordered beef chowmein , beef fried rice and orange chicken. The chowmein noodles were large like lo-mein and beef were large pieces- wasn't as tasteful as other Chinese restaurants. The fried rice was kinda hard and looked more like white rice with a few veggies thrown in. Now let's talk about the orange chicken- that was delicious! Sauce was savory and chicken was tender. As much as I travel around the Los Angeles area and eat out, I've had many great meals and I've offered many great reviews. But every now and then I have an experience that really does not live up to mine, nor any standard, and that was my experience at Foo Chow. Let me tell you about it. It came at the end of my day, hungry and just looking for a plate of sweet-and-sour pork with rice, which is what I ordered. The food came out. It looked nice, large pieces of sweet-and-sour pork... So I thought. I began eating and the flavor was OK but halfway through my meal I realized I've been eating, but I can't remember really chewing any actual meat. So with half of my plate just about gone, I used my time investigating the other half of the plate. I got my spoon in my fork and began to peel back the coating on the pieces of "meat". Honestly, I was really hard pressed to find very much meat. To give you an idea the amount of meat that was in one piece was maybe 20 to 30%. The rest of it was fat and batter (pictured). I ordered "Sweet and Sour Pork" not "Sweet-and-Sour Pork FAT". The server never came to check on me. The guy behind the counter eventually came toward the END of the meal to ask how everything was and I told him there was very little meat in this dish. He responded with "well that is the batter, it swells". Frankly, the weak excuses are not needed nor desired. He left for a couple minutes and came back with the bill and said he talked to the guy in the back and he admitted to cutting the meat very small. He then went on to say that he will start cutting it bigger moving forward. this is totally fine for anybody coming after today, but I'm here now and I was served up a plate of fat and batter, but there was no attempt at fixing this situation that I was in and to top it off now I was expected to pay for it. this was my first time coming to this restaurant. I came because someone referred me to the restaurant. I have to say I was most disappointed. My experience left an unfortunate impression. Just as I share experiences of great meals, great service great establishments, I also have to balance it out with reviews when it's just not a satisfying experience, such as this. At a corner and easy to find with its green paint and noticeable wording of rush hour. When we went in it was not busy yet but crowd started to trickle in. It is a standard Chinese joint if you know what I mean. Simple service, not much follow up after meal given, not the most wondrous decor. But what is most important is the food! Got the fried rice and beef chow fun. Portion standard but price is sadly so high. Of course it's the economy too but I would at least increase portion! A simple Chinese restaurant in Chinatown downtown LA but some amazing food. They're specialized in seafood but they also have other dishes. The Jackie Chan film "Rush Hour" was partially filmed there. It is a very modest restaurant with reasonable prices and typical Chinese restaurant service. It's an older building with small restrooms and simple furnishings, but the food is excellent and it is not expensive. What better way to celebrate Chinese New Year in Los Angeles than by going to Chinatown? Unfortunately, quite a few people had the same idea! We ended up at Foo Chow after unsuccessfully trying to get into another restaurant nearby. This place only had a 5 minute wait, so we decided to have a couple quick dishes here to see what it was all about. Situated on Hill, across from the iconic Chinatown Central Plaza, the location of this restaurant is great. It would appear they've been in operation since 1977, which is also impressive. It was even more exciting to find out that this was a filming location for the movie Rush Hour. Who would have known? While our time here was short, we had a great experience. Old school since 1977. I've been wanting to eat here for years and I finally stopped by for dinner, they close at 900pm. For the movie buffs they filmed Rush Hour (1998) here. They offer dinner specials with a list of different main courses for 23 dollars which includes soup, appetizers, steam rice, and tea. Stopped in on a rainy LA day and parked across the street at the $5 parking garage but if you're lucky maybe you'll find street parking. There was tables for couples up to 8 people at a round family style table with a lazy Susan in the middle for rotating the à la carte style entrees around the table. We had 6 people in our group and were served promptly through the hustle and bustle of the Saturday crowd. This food was exactly what I want Chinese food to taste like. No soy sauce needed. Nothing extra needed on anything we touched. Absolutely amazing. The walnut shrimp was the star of the show for sure. 10/10 highly recommend, matter of fact we ordered two because that's how good it was. The combination noodles were absolutely delicious as well, my only complaint that there was only one shrimp and we wanted more shrimps. The cashew chicken was also delicious, the perfect ratio of chicken to veggies with mushrooms cashews zucchini and celery. We ordered the Mongolian beef which was full of sautéed onions, not bad I just wish it was a little more saucy. My son who is a self proclaimed orange chicken connoisseur thought the orange chicken here was mid. They use dark meat for the orange chicken and we weren't impressed with the sauce. It was the least touched entree surprisingly but to be fair there wasn't anything truly wrong with it. Overall the food was delicious and we will definitely make an effort to come back. Surprisingly this inconspicuous spot was in Rush Hour so it almost makes a cute tourist spot if you're a blockbuster fan. Of course now we have to rewatch the movie. read more

Quick service and portions are pretty standard, nothing crazy. Ordered a bunch of different dishes (beef chow fun, sauteed string beans, house special fried rice, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, sweet and sour pork, forgot the other dishes). The sauteed string beans were the best thing we ordered. Overall the food was not very authentic, was too salty, and had little wok hei. If I had little options to choose from, I would come back here, but I recommend driving a little further east to SGV/626 area for better Chinese food! read more

Service was top tier! I absolutely loved this restaurant. It's a must visit. The food is so flavorful and worth the price. I had a dinner special with Orange Chicken. It comes with a wonton soup, an egg roll, breaded Shrimp, and rice. It was a quickly served and delicious for me. Please remember the majority of the food has bell peppers and pineapple. My plus 1 has a major allergy to both foods so that wasn't as pleasant. As a nerd, seeing the restaurant from the Rush Hour movie, definitely made me geek out. I really wanted to see what was upstairs and if it was really a room with cameras (even though we know there aren't.) I loved the whole experience and will definitely come back. read more

I've always been picky about Chinese food because I'm constantly looking for an East Coast flavor palate and honestly West Coast Chinese food is a bit different, but one thing is for sure.....If you want something done right, you've gotta go authentic, so i'm glad we went to Chinatown. We felt well taken care of. The food was good, some dishes were better than others, but overall a very flavorful experience. More details below. My friend and I definitely overordered, but we wanted to try a bit of everything. For appetizers, we got scallion pancakes, fried wings, and cheese wontons. The wontons were the best, creamy and delicious. The wings could've used some seasoning before the fry but eating them with Sriracha made them taste better (I do hate having to rely on a sauce though but such is the curse of a dry wing). The scallion pancakes were good, a bit on the greasy side, which, yes, they're fried, but I imagine the wontons came out of the same fryer, and they weren't dripping. We added an order of Singapore Style Rice noodles, which came with a lot more stuff than expected, pleasant surprise, and an order of pork fried rice. I chose to get the pork fried rice without the BBQ sauce, but I was told it normally comes with and is delicious. Both dishes were great either way and packed with flavor. Where do I begin as you can look at the pictures and see this is not egg foo yong. I don't even know what it is. The only thing I can identify is the shrimp. The teriyaki sauce instead of gravy is diabolical. I was so disappointed because so many people at my job had told me go there and try their food. Big Bro and I built up an appetite walking around Chinatown and as hungry as we were, we couldn't make up our minds where to eat: there were way too many choices. We do have our "usual" spots, but we sorta wanted to try something new. After asking some vendors from the plaza across the street, this place came well-recommended. We've known about this place and it's popularity for years: yes, this is where they filmed a scene of RUSH HOUR. Not really sure why as many times as we've been through Chinatown, we've never made a stop. I guess it was time. It was a weekday mid-day late afternoon, so there were plenty of tables open. We were seated by the door next to the stairs (the doors are new, it wasn't there when the movie was filmed.) We were handed menus and hot tea immediately. There were way too many things we wanted to try, but given there were only 2 of us, we thought 3 dishes woulda been too much already. We ended up with three anyway! CHICKEN WITH CURRY SAUCE: A must-try for me at anytime I'm trying a new Chinese restaurant. (Back story: I have a go-to spot in the South Bay who has set the bar on this dish, and I know I shouldn't, but I always have the need to compare!) The sauce was perfect and they were generous with the amount of chicken. The only downside are the amount and the sizes of the sliced fillers (onions, carrots and bell peppers.) The bell peppers definitely altered the curry taste a little bit. Good overall, but could be better. CRISPY DUCK (HALF): This was EXCELLENT. It really lives up to its name - every part of the skin was crispy and no part of the meat was dry. It was also seasoned well. I didn't feel the sauce was needed, but it did add to its flavor. Highly recommending. SAUTEED FOUR DELICACY: Big Bro and I wanted to try something different - away from the usual Chinese-American style. Our server mentioned that Foo Chow (aka Fuzhou) is a specific region in China who have specialized dishes. He guided us to the "Foo Chow Specialties" portion of the menu. He did warn us that many of those listed items are specific to certain palates, so not to be surprised if we learn it might not be for us. (I appreciated the honesty.) That said, we ended up with this dish, and truthfully, we enjoyed it. The sauce was very subtle which paved the way for the mushrooms, abalone, scallops and broccoli to shine in their individual flavors. I took every part of this dish and had them as single bites and it was delish - that's how it should be eaten! FOOD: 4.5. SERVICE: 3.5. Not a lot of interaction but our servers were there as needed. There wasn't a lot of wait either, which is always a plus. VALUE: 5. They're generous! I did mention it was plenty of food for two - we had enough leftover for a second meal for both of us. PARKING: Street only (that I'm aware of.) There are plenty of paid parking lots all over the area, some as cheap as $5 for the whole day. OVERALL: 4,25, Other than the added double doors, the decor hasn't changed much (in comparison to what you see in the movie.) More patrons came through during and toward the end of our meal, so that says something. If you happen to be a fan and plan on coming through, you won't miss it: there's a gigantic sign facing the street outside telling you who and where they are. Great first run. I've been coming here since I was 8 yrs old . I'm 50 now . I was a place were my mom and stepdad would take us for lunch or dinner or celebrate special occasions. Food has always been been great. My wife's family has been coming here since when she twelve or thirteen. And we would talk about this place when we're dating with out even knowing it was the same place. Both of our parents loved this place but recently we lost both of our parents. So we went thinking the would be as we remembered . But the food was little lackluster. The food lacked flavor and it seemed like the same recipe for everything. Like the kung pao chicken and the orange chicken tasted the same. The wonton soup, lack taste and flavor. Fried rice tasted like white rice with veggies and egg and shrimp no flavor at all. The only that really tasted good was the beef and broccoli. Good Chinese food - nothing extraordinary in an area that serves, well, very good Chinese food. It's hard for these restaurants to stand out. You almost have to pick them based on how busy they are and the prices. Prices here were reasonable, portions ample. The friend wontons (like cheese rangoons) were really great - as were the Singapore noodles. The staff was helpful but not terribly friendly. Wait times were tolerable. It was quite good - most of my impressions are based on what they compete with, in Chinatown - and it's tough competition. It's a stop you can always have on your list: clean, with reasonable parking opportunities around it, and near the souvenir shops and most festive sections of Chinatown. An easy choice when you go back to Chinatown but it still leaves it worth exploring other options when you're around. read more

Look, I'm not going to sit here and say I am a Chinese food connoisseur because I simply am not... Another thing - sometimes when restaurants are featured in TV/film, it can go two ways... Extremely over-hyped and disappointing or it can be as delicious as portrayed in the media. My verdict? It was coooo. My rating of a Chinese restaurant is usually dependent on how good their hot jasmine tea is when they bring it out (usually in a metal teapot) and this place was A-OK... The jasmine tea was light, but not has fragrant as I would have preferred. In order of highly favorable to least... The orange chicken! It was brought out piping hot, so it was extra crispyyyy. Delicious! Loved the bell peppers sprinkled throughout, however, wish there was a bit more!! The Mongolian beef was good, I enjoyed the smokey wok aroma that it had. It had a good amount of grilled onions, which I enjoyed! The chicken chow mein was good, it also had a nice helping of chicken in the portion, so it could definitely be enjoyed on its' own. The wok aroma was also present :) The egg rolls... Meh. I wish there was more veggie filling. It felt like the shelling was more than the actual content of the eggroll. My least favorite.
