Absolute MUST. So much history at this location (literally over 100 years), the invention of the French dip sandwich, and so much to look at. Love the vintage phone booths that they have there (great for photo opportunities), the train room (lots of model trains, plans for the alleged SoCal to NorCal train route) and circus trains too for the clown enjoyers, as well as sports ball memorabilia and merchandise for purchase all around. They have street parking and their own parking lot so keep that in mind. We went right after a Dodgers game so it was quite fisted, but a member in our party was able to secure a table for us while we waited in line to order. Probably 30 people or so ahead of us, but we were able to order in around 15-20 minutes so it's a real testament to how super efficient their cashiers are. Especially since they get all the food ready for you then and there to bring back to your table on a tray. Huge kudos to staff. Crazy extensive menu ranging from breakfast foods, several forms of French dip sandwiches, various sides, daily specials, beer and wine, and other desserts. There's something for everyone here, I feel. We got the: 1) Potato and Macaroni Salad: -I'm a SUCKER for salads that aren't green salads and my boyfriend is too, so this was a must to order. Nice sour tangy taste (good mustard-y mayo flavor) and generous portion of both salads. Great side to our sandwiches. 2) French Dipped Sandwich: -It was my first visit here, so I just got their standard beef dip, single dip on a French roll, but you can be adventurous and really mix it up. My boyfriend got a lamb dip on rye, wet style, so the variations are truly unique from the standard. -As for my standard beef dip, super simple and delicious. Good ratio of semi thinly sliced beef in a French roll. The single dip added a good moist layer to the beef, stopping it from being dry and also soaked into the bread as well. Beef absorbed the au just nicely and you get a small cup to dip in as well to your heart's content. -And now the kicker, YOU GOTTA use their hot mustard. It's so good that they even sell bottles of it. Good strong kick, hits you right in the sinuses and I even teared up from adding too much, but it's so so good. I also got to try the cheesecake and tapioca pudding, which were standard but solid desserts that hit the spot after a deliciously savory and umami filled dinner. I love that they have unique items on the menu too, like the pickled pig's feet (that my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed and which was a huge generous portion that had to be taken to go), and pickled eggs and much more. I didn't want to order too much and get too full, so definitely next time, I'll order what I didn't get to try the first time!

This has been the original French dip to me for decades, since my dad brought us here as kids. It's a classic. The soft bun (single dip for me) and the layered beef and side of au jus doesn't get any better. Add the potato salad and a lemonade and it's a craveable meal that hits the spot every time. There's plenty of seating, parking is easy, and restrooms are clean. Wait times can sometimes be long (pre-Dodger game) but if you miss peak times, the line moves quickly. It's fun to check out their display cases, too, with dodger and railroad memorabilia.

This iconic place is always on its game! For more than 40 years I have been able to visit. The restaurant isn't fancy, but it is clean and quite nostalgic. Their French Dip and potato salad are always mind-blowing great. You have to order a side of pickles to complete a perfect lunch meal. Could be crowded at lunchtime, so I typically wait until 2:00 PM for easy parking and a far less crowded experience. A high recommendation here; especially for out of town guests!!

First time trying a french dip sandwich. I heard good things about it but I don't think I'm a fan of wet bread - no hate on their food but my personal preference. They have their own parking lot. You can order online, takeout, or in person. There's a vintage photobooth for $7. It was busy at noon on a Tuesday but the line moved fast. There's seating inside but they get taken quick. Service was good as well. I ordered the beef dip ($14.50) with single dip, no spicy mustard. Portion is pretty small for this price. It is just protein as it comes with no veggies or other toppings. The single dip was one slice of bread dipped in their broth which made it soggy. I did not enjoy that texture all that much. Roast beef slices were tender though.

As an LA native, born and raised, I've never been here before. I usually hit up Chinatown for lunch when I'm in the area or sometimes, I'll get some taquitos over on Olvera Street, but I never had the chance to try this place until recently. You walk in and there is a zigzag line that you have to wait in before you get called up to this long counter. When you get up there, they allow you to have samples, if it's your first time, or if you want to try a little something for yourself. They're famous for their French Dip sandwich, whether you want it soaked once, twice or have it wet. They have other options of meat, such as lamb, turkey, ham or pastrami. They also have a pretty large breakfast menu and lots of tasty homemade desserts. I had the pastrami on rye with swiss cheese and mustard, and it was very hearty, and tasty. I grabbed some coleslaw and some potato salad, too, that were amazing! They definitely got their own brand going on. This is a local hot spot for people to have lunch at before they head up the street to Dodger Stadium. So, if you would like to eat there, I suggest you get there pretty early to avoid the lunch rush or the rush before the start of a baseball game. Go Dodgers!

Beef Sandwich was really good. Staff was ok - the guy that helped us was nice but the lady I asked about the desserts was not so friendly. Suffice it to say that we only got sandwiches - no dessert. Plenty of seating and their own parking lot. Would I go back? Sure, I'll give it another try.

A quick visit to Philippe The Original is like stepping into a piece of LA history!!! Classic dipped sandwiches, simple comfort food, and that old-school deli vibe that never goes out of style! Between the vintage phone booth, Dodgers pride, (heck yes!!!) and all the nostalgic touches, it's just a fun place to be! Definitely an LA fave...great food, great memories, and always worth the stop after a field trip! Best part... kiddo approved!!!!

Philippe specialized in beef French dip sandwiches. Overall, the number of reviews is what led me to try this establishment! I ordered what they were known for. Service was fast and efficient. The Beef French Dip was not bad at $14.50. The Hot Mustard definitely had a kick!

The smell of roast beef hit before we even fully got through the door, and that felt like a pretty good sign. We stopped at Philippe the Original for dinner before heading to the airport, which turned out to be exactly the right kind of meal for that in between part of the day when you want something filling without overthinking it. We ordered three beef French dips with Swiss, and the food really landed. The sandwiches were hot, satisfying, and just plain good, with tender beef and that classic dipped bread that had plenty of flavor without turning into a soggy mess. The Swiss worked well with the beef and gave each sandwich a little extra richness without taking over. Service was very friendly from the start, which made the whole stop feel easy. Nothing felt forced or rushed, and that mattered since we were trying to eat well and keep moving. It is the kind of place that knows what it is and delivers on it, which I always appreciate. Overall, this was a great pre-airport dinner and an easy five star visit for me. Sometimes you just want a place that serves exactly what you came for and does it well. My only tip is to come hungry and keep it simple, because the beef French dip with Swiss is hard to argue with.

Got dinner tonight at Philippe's to go. Ordered the Lamb sandwich and Cole Slaw. Wow, prices have gone up a lot since my last visit a few years back. The service is still friendly and the vibe is the same. It Can get busy at lunch and dinner times. They have free parking. Across the street lot also. Rating: 4 Stars

We came here to try the original French Dip sandwich (about $16 after tax). We visited during lunch rush and everything was handled efficiently. It's a deli-style spot. The line was long, but it moved quickly. You get in line, order at the counter, and they'll quickly prep your order then and there and serve it to you on a tray. There was ample seating with a variety of tables and chairs, booths, and stools. They also have a water refill station. We kept it classic - beef sandwich on French bread. You can choose between single dipped (top bread slice dipped in au jus), double dipped (both the top and bottom bread dipped in au jus), or wet (bread fully submerged). There are also pork, lamb, pastrami, turkey, and ham options. You can add cheese for an additional charge. We went double dipped since I didn't want it to be too dry or a soggy mess... I wanted it just right! (Call it a Goldilocks scenario). The sandwich comes with a generous amount of beef. The au jus soaked into the bread was delicious - I recommend asking for extra au jus on the side to dip the sandwich in. We didn't (rookie mistake), and the meat was dry. Instead of just dipping the bread, I really wish they also dipped the meat. We happened to visit on free chili day and were given a coupon for a free bowl of chili. You can add cheese and onions to your bowl, and it comes with saltines. It's all meat (no beans) - pretty standard. They have other classic sides like potato salad, macaroni salad, and coleslaw. For dessert, they have a selection of pie slices which were very tempting. This is a popular and historic establishment. It's nice to check off the LA bucket list as something to experience, but original doesn't always mean best...

I can't believe I've never reviewed this LA staple before! I absolutely love Philippe's and as a former Angeleno, I make it a point to stop in for a double dipped beef dip anytime I'm in DTLA. Nothing beats the tenderness of the beef and that incredible aus jus. I love that the place has hardly changed in my lifetime, and the little changes that have been made are nice improvements - such as the less chaotic line queue now, updated restrooms, and fun photo booth. Although I'm still not sure how I feel about them allowing patrons to order a side of their safely guarded aus jus when it used to only be offered on the sandwich itself to ensure no one tried replicating the recipe. Maybe someday I'll be unbothered by it haha Service from the ladies at the order counter, the bus boys, and the little candy/merch counter is always consistently friendly. Philippe continues to fill my heart and stomach with joy!

One of the best meals I've had this year. Everything was a hit -- from the salad to the side dishes, the meat, and dessert. Nothing disappointed. The menu is definitely made for sharing, and every dish felt thoughtful, flavorful, and fun. My favorite was the fried pepper. I think I'll be dreaming about it, and I would come back just for that. We were definitely overloaded with meat, but in the best way. The decor and ambience are very chill -- lively, relaxed, and very LA without feeling pretentious. We came for my mommy friend's birthday, and it was perfect for a moms' night out, but the crowd also had that young, hip energy. It feels like a place that works for all ages. Service was very attentive and knowledgeable without hovering. Parking is right next door by the Electric Theater lot, about $15 with no validation, so carpooling is probably the move. Food wasn't good. Nothing stood out to me except for the salad. For starters we were suppose to have two different salads but without apologies a waitress simply brought out a small bowl of cucumber slices stating they ran out of the other salad. No comp or no discussion on an alternative where I was charged full prefix price. It was disappointing since I wanted to try their salads and that was the best part of their entire prefix and only dish we actually finished. For Steak and eggs entree, they never asked how I would've like the steak cooked and they brought it medium, which we did not touch since it was too bloody for my liking. The deserts were all underwhelming also including meringue, tart and chocolate mousse. I got sliders for my kid who loves a good cheese burger but she didn't eat it either. Also having fries with burgers would've been nice and I was surprised she got two small sliders with no fries. Usually sliders and chicken tenders are always served with fries. Esp for children. Service was okay initially but towards end I had to keep looking for waiter trying to ask for things since again end of day I felt workers were busy closing out and not as much attention was paid to guests still left. Ambiance was okay. It was farther than I thought near Chinatown than my usual west LA options. To me it's about experience, taste and quality time but given price point and culinary experience I had for Mother's Day prefix, I do not want to dine again at this restaurant.

The food looked like it was trying very hard to be trendy and "experimental," but underneath all of that, most of the dishes were surprisingly bland. Not bold, not nuanced, just lacking flavor altogether. For a restaurant positioning itself as elevated Korean-inspired food, the actual taste felt forgettable. The portions also felt wildly overpriced for what you get. Small plates are one thing when the flavor delivers, but paying premium prices for tiny servings that don't leave an impression is another. It honestly felt more like paying for branding and neon lighting than for quality food. And the biggest red flag? The restaurant was nearly empty at 7:30 PM on a Saturday night. In Highland Park where good spots are packed on weekends, that tells you a lot. Atmosphere and cocktails can only carry a restaurant so far if the food itself isn't giving people a reason to come back. I already know the response will probably mention "modern interpretations," or "playful experimentation," but none of those things excuse bland food and poor value. Reinventing a cuisine is fine but .... it still has to taste good.

Barbara's at the Brewery is definitely the highlight of the street because the sign is so large and parking is centered all around it but I still got confused on where the entrance was. I thought the entrance is where the large sign you see from the street is, but actually you have to walk past that sign and past the gate and all the way straight to the yellow building up ahead and that's when you run straight into Barbara's. There are two entrances but I didn't realize I was closer to the main one and somehow I walked all the way to the left and around up some stairs to go in from what I guess must be the back door. Next time once you are at the yellow building go around the right and the door is almost immediately to your left. Once inside I liked the vibe. There are two rooms, one is the bar area room and one is the room where people can just take their food or drinks and just hang out and eat. I went to the bar and the bartender was super friendly and he let me taste test the beer before ordering. I got the Poppiness beer which was very delicious and refreshing, ice cold. I sipped it slowly and it stayed cold throughout my whole meal. To eat I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with fries. I don't often eat fried food because my belly will hurt, but it was one of the few chicken items on the menu and I went for it. Good thing I did! The sandwich was absolutely delicious. The outside is perfectly crunchy that every time you bite in there is this satisfying crunch noise, and the inside chicken is a good thick portion of chicken and it is so moist and flavorful. I gobbled that sandwich down and wished I could get a second to go haha! The best thing though is that my belly did not hurt after eating this sandwich, I'm thinking the ingredients must be really clean. I definitely loved the food, the drinks, and the vibe of the place, and would 100% stop by again if I'm in the area!

The Corn Beef Silog was really solid, it was also deep fried in a Panko Crusted outer layer which is their take on a Croquette. We particularly like the crunch it adds to the dish. But yeah it was the corn beef has we were looking for mixed with the good 'ol garlic rice and sunny side up egg. The vinegar they used was a lot stronger than I thought and I think they could do without it. The tonic espresso grew on me, upon first sip, I could taste the tonic and I haven't had tonic before so I wasn't feeling it. Until I mixed it and it got a lot better. What was really cute too, is they have pop up vendors and it was a bread and dessert vendor that are right across the counter. What caught my eye was this apron that was a collaboration between Garden and Seeds x Lasita. It had so many pockets and it went from a short apron to a long one with just a zipper. I bought this for the sole purpose of wearing it as an accessory as Tan/Brown pairs well with black and white clothing. Staff was so nice and helpful when ordering and even inquiring about the apron since there was no price on it. Hopefully we'll be back and can catch them during their dinner service!
