Since I was in the area after an appointment at UCLA Medical Center, my wife and I were debating whether to stop by Johnnie's in Culver City or the Apple Pan in WLA. After examining the current prices, we decided to take the thrifty option and went with Apple Pan. This place makes an amazing burger. We love the hickory burger with cheddar cheese. That thick layer of crunchy lettuce and their unique BBQ sauce make it a winner. The sauce isn't thick like many others and it has just the right balance between sweet and tangy that I've never found anywhere else. The fries are pretty run of the mill though. I did order a slice of cherry cream pie but haven't dug into that yet being too full after eating my burger and fries. Parking is bit challenging. They've created an outdoor patio area where there used to be a few parking spaces. A guard watches over the lot across the street during business hours so they probably shoo you away until after closing. You'll have to find street parking which is metered but I'm not sure about the hours. Still, it's definitely worth the time to stop and get one of their iconic burgers.
Finally had a chance to step in and boy was this place amazing. Americana charm at its finest. Had me a hickory burger which reminded me of a classic carnival burger, the char and the sweet taste hit home! Fries are well done and crisp although portion a tad too small. Had their egg salad on rye and it was perfect! Topped it off with a slice of apple pie ala mode and the pie was a bit wet but otherwise served warm and crust good. Fast quick service. Friendly family vibes.
This has been on my list for a while after they did a collab with SideCar. The Hickory Burger was a pretty decent burger $10.25. The special sauce was interesting. The patty was juicy and moist. The ice berg had a nice crunch. Cheese is extra. I did not order fries, since I already ate lunch. Parking can be tricky but Wells Fargo is next door. Overall, it's been around for 80 years so they have definitely been in the neighborhood. They do have loyal customers. My one note would be the ringer for to-go and pick-up. It was broken and people were waiting a long time for a slice of pie $7.75.
I recall that this place was on a lot of top places to eat lists back in the day, but I never actually tried it until today. While I was here, I asked the guy what I should get and he suggested a hickory burger and either an apple pie or a banana cream pie. He said those were the best choices. My favorite item of the bunch was the banana cream pie. It had a lot of flavor and just hit the right way. I really enjoyed this a lot. I think the flavors blended extremely well together and this was a quality pie. Next was the apple pie. It was really good, had just the right amount of cinnamon and glaze over the apples and also had a crispy crust. It came with a sauce as well to enhance the apple pie as well. While the burger was good, I'm not that big of a fan of ketchup, and it had a lot of it on it. The grilled onions were cooked really well though. I feel if there was less, or no ketchup, I would've probably enjoyed this more. But if you like ketchup a lot, you may really enjoy this burger. The service is pretty quick. The ambiance is nice with their outdoor patio. I think this is a pretty good place for pies!
The original apple pie was just okay, but the boysenberry pie (limited edition I believe) was such a standout - super delicious and you don't really see it anywhere else. A bit pricey for a small-ish slice, but I would definitely get it again and recommend trying it if it's in season! They have a bunch of tables with benches outside. Cute shop!
Solid dinner spot. Classic burgers. I'd order the fries extra well done next time. They were fresh but a few people next to us got well done and they looked even better (golden & crispy). Canned sodas. Apple pie was decent but I wasn't blown away / would pass on it next time. Super nice staff & very quick service. Street metered parking. Cute classic spot!
We've been trying to come here for two years now! We were finally able to go today and it was so delicious! My boyfriend ordered the hickory burger and I ordered the steak burger. Both were great, but we liked the hickory burger better. It has a smoky bbq sauce that is soooo yummy. The steak burger also has a special sauce which was good but it has large chunks of relish in the sauce, which I'm not a huge fan of so I'll definitely stick to the hickory burger next time. For dessert we ordered the apple pie. YUM!! Definitely recommend. The overall vibe is super cute too! Love the simplicity and classic diner feel. There's only one counter inside and more tables in the patio.
Finally made it to the famous Apple pan known to have the one of the best burgers in Los Angeles. I am so happy that I did come because they did not disappoint. 1st of all the restaurant is spotless the white counter tops are pristine. The service is spot on and now let's talk about the food. The tilamook cheddar that they put on the burgers is so good I do believe it's a dollar up charge for this cheese but it is well worth it. The buns are grilled to perfection with the crunchy side but soft middle. The patty was very good well seasoned you could taste the quality of the meat although I wish I knew that it came medium rare because I prefer mine medium or medium well but it didn't matter it was still good. I got the hickory burger it had a good sauce on it and a good Smokey flavor to it. Overall, I highly recommend this place. It's an old school institution known for some of the best burgers in Los Angeles. They're on every list of top Burgers in Los Angeles and in my opinion as well deserved.
I haven't been here for several years. I decided to stop by at 11 am on a weekday when they opened for business. Good timing as only others were waiting to go in. I was a bit turned off by the waitress. I wasn't welcomed and kept waiting while she chit-chatted with the other employees. She never cracked a smile and eventually took my order. I ordered my favorite - the Hickory Cheeseburger. It was served to me cold and the cheese was stuck to the wrapper. But it was still good which is why I've been coming here for decades. I'll give the waitress credit the way she handled a very rude customer. He was seated near me and placed an order and the waitress tried to clarify his custom order. He said in a loud voice, "Honey, I've been eating here for years before you were born, and you need to listen." She calmly finished the order and maintained her composure. While the prices have increased slightly, I felt it was competitive and not over the top. This was a long drive for me but it brings back fond memories of times long ago when I dined there with now gone family members and friends.
Great location, parking isn't too hard. Steakburger and fries are good but not worth a special trip. Burger is a little smaller than I remembered but still fresh and tasty. I feel because of the location it's more of a locals tradition. Service is straight forward, nothing exceptional. It's fast food counter service or outdoor patio seeting.I'm between 3 and 4 stars becasue the prices, despite the economy, are too high for me to go back. $4.75 for a can of soda isn't worth it. Both locals and tourists clamor for a shot at one of the 26 stools, surrounding the horseshoe-shaped counter. The menu is simple - two burgers, a couple of sandwiches, fries and pie! What else do you need!! (they also have tuna and egg salad). The burgers are grilled, wrapped in paper and served with or without cheese. The Steak Burger (1927) and the Hickory Burger (1945) are the staples. Yes, you can get a better burger (with less lettuce) somewhere else, but when they slap down that burger on the counter in front of you, It becomes more than just food, it's an experience. Many say that the pie is the real star at the Apple Pan. They offer about a dozen different varieties, but it is not surprising that the Apple Pie is the coveted choice. The Apple Pan has gone cashless, since May of 2025. Physically, the burger is similar to the In-N-Out style. Not a gourmet type of place, and not a huge overstuffed gimmick burger. Just a classic size and taste. Most surprising part was how CRISP the famous Hickory Burger is. Those lettuce and pickles CRUNCH. Fries are big, best to share one order. Gotta try some pie. I've been told the Apple, and Banana Cream are the best. Went with BC, and it was perfect. Everyone needs to visit The Apple Pan at least once.
I was last here over six years ago. I distinctly remember having the hickory burger and not liking it. This was surprising to me since this establishment had a reputation for serving some of the best burgers in town. Fast forward to a few days ago. Despite my previous experience, I decided to give this place another shot for lunch. Right off the bat, this place looked different to me. Where there once used to be a parking lot, there was now an outdoor dining area, there was a takeout window on the right hand side of the building which I'm pretty sure wasn't there before, and there was a tablet up front to process credit card payments whereas before, this place was cash only. But those weren't the only differences. This time around, I found the hickory burger to be a finely crafted delight. Everything about it was executed perfectly. The bun tasted fresh. The beef patty was cooked to a perfect medium temperature. The hickory sauce was wonderfully smoky and applied in such a way as to not make the burger messy or soggy. The service was fantastic. My server was incredibly efficient. Seemed like he could do his job blind folded. Food and drinks came out very fast. I'm really glad I gave this place a second chance. Not sure what I was thinking before, but I now feel that their hickory burger is one of the best burgers I've had in quite some time. read more
Few things make me feel quite as American as walking into a 1940's diner, pulling up a chair to the counter & enjoying a good ol' fashioned cheeseburger, french fries, & a coke. Top that off with a slice of apple pie à la mode & you're about as American as playing a game of stickball on a sunny Summer afternoon. I mean, it's pretty cool that you can essentially be eating the same kind of burger that was enjoyed decades ago FOOD: Hickory Burger - 8.7 / 10 My top pick between the 2 offered options. Your standard, delicious burger (cheese available upon request). Served with mayonnaise, pickles, lettuce, & that oh so delicious hickory sauce - mildy sweet, with an unmistakable layer of smokiness. I wish they sold their hickory sauce in grocery stores. It makes the burger. Steakburger - 8.4 / 10 A decent burger by any stretch of the imagination. Served with mayonnaise, pickles, lettuce, & their alternate sauce. To me, it has a relish feel / consistency & noticeably sweet. It's different, but I'm not really one for a layer of sweetness on my burger. Delicious nonetheless. French Fries - 8.5 / 10 Thicker cut (not as thick as steak fries). Golden, brown, delicious. Not greasy. Sizable & stand-up to the heartiness of their burgers. Personally, I prefer a bit more fries for an order, but an arguably decent portion for one. The perfect vehicle for Heinz ketchup. Apple Pie à la mode - 8.6 / 10 Classic homemade tastes - flaky, moist pastry crust. Not-too-sweet melty apple filling. Served alongside of a hunk of real, solid-cold vanilla ice cream. It definitely satisfies the sweet tooth & it's quite the hearty portion. Huge, huge shoutout to Nayeli for being so incredibly welcoming. She was so beyond enthusiastic to make my friend's & my first visits memorable. She didn't hesitate to answer all of our questions. It's also the little things like getting us an extra cup of ice & pouring our ketchup in a separate dish. She loved getting to know us - which I appreciated. Also, thanks to Franklin for taking care of us as well. Next time, I'll have to try their off-menu tuna melt. Small note: The coat rack on the west side of the dining room is such a nice touch that deserves to be used. Hang your coat & keep those seat backs clear! Such a cool, chill, casual, diner that really makes you feel like you're in a timeless place that embodies Los Angeles' take of Americana. read more

I've been coming to the Apple Pan since 1998 and thought it was finally time to update my review. Thankfully, even after the restaurant changed ownership a few years ago, most of what makes it special has remained carefully preserved. The addition of a pleasant outdoor dining area has made it much easier to find a seat, while the counter experience inside remains largely unchanged. Prices have risen, as they have everywhere, but the quality of the ingredients may actually have improved, particularly the beef patties. The difference is subtle, but noticeable. After nearly three decades of visits, the Apple Pan remains reassuringly familiar and delicious. read more

We've been trying to come here for two years now! We were finally able to go today and it was so delicious! My boyfriend ordered the hickory burger and I ordered the steak burger. Both were great, but we liked the hickory burger better. It has a smoky bbq sauce that is soooo yummy. No frills. Seating is first come first serve. If the inside counter is full, you wait until space opens up. They also have outdoor seating with lots of tables in the back. The food is good. They like to put lots of iceberg lettuce in their sandwiches. The fries are nice and crispy. The secret menu includes a tuna melt and cheese fries. read more

Classic old-school LA burger spot. Price: 5/5. Parking: 3/5 since it's mostly street parking. Worth the 40-minute drive if you're specifically looking for nostalgic diner vibes. The food isn't mind-blowing, but it is solid comfort food - an old-fashioned burger and good pie. You come here more for the atmosphere and history than for some over-the-top foodie experience. Service was amazing - they knew what I wanted before I asked for it, happy face ketchup, cleaned up napkins as they were used. Honestly I'm going back just for the service and the vibe. There's an outdoor patio if you prefer sitting outside, but the classic counter seating inside is definitely the move. Not necessarily a must-visit for out-of-towners, but if you live in LA, you should experience it at least once. Will definitely be back. read more

Super nostalgic, very old-school LA diner vibes, and I totally get why people are emotionally attached to this place. That said... it's overpriced for what you get. The food is good, not life-changing, and the hype definitely does some heavy lifting. Hot take (but I stand by it): Pie 'n Burger in Pasadena is better. Better value, better execution, and less "you're paying for the legend" energy. Would I come back? Sure. Would I tell out-of-towners it's a must? Ehhh... read more
Tried the famous tuna melt from here and it was good, but would've been great straight from the pan. I ordered pickup here and by the time I was able to eat it, it wasn't warm. The cheese also wasn't very melty. However, I liked that the bread still stayed crispy and crunchy. I ordered it on rye and it was good. The tuna portion was generous and it was creamy. I also did an add-on of grilled onions which was good, but not necessary. It came with a side of pickles and black olives. I don't really like olives but the the pickles were a nice sweet and fresh contrast to eat with the heavy sandwich. I also ordered a side of fries which were your solid, classic diner fries. Overall, the tuna melt was solid and next time I would order it fresh. read more
A good spot for a solid, no frills burger. We ordered the hickory and the steakburger. I would have to argue that the hickoryburger is the better burger mainly because the sweet relish in the steakburger really took command of the entire bite. We were able to find seats inside right away (first come, first serve) at 5:30pm on a Sunday. It did seem to pick up shortly after we got in so plan ahead! I generally don't like pies but really enjoyed their apple pie. read more

Okay, do not judge me, but this is the first time I've been to Apple Pan in my 40+ years living in Los Angeles. I've driven past it, thought about it, and this past weekend, my hubby made it a reality! I had to sit at the counter, I was not going to sit outside, I needed the whole Apple Pan experience! We waited a good 10mins and a family that sat themselves decided to eat outside so we got their seats, YAY!! The place is really clean, sitting at the counter is hella nostalgic, and the servers wear those cute little hats, its a total VIBE! We ordered the hickory burger and the steak burger and I preferred the steak burger over the hickory and it worked out because the hubby loves the hickory. We also got some soda (cream soda, please) and one order of fries to share. All in all, the burger, music, vibes, fries, drinks, the whole experience was ahhhmazing!! Next time I go, I'm definitely getting the banana cream pie!! read more

This place is an LA legend. The burgers are good, solid, consistent and predictable. I find myself coming here every once in a while throughout the years for this reason. Apple Pan is an OG diner feel and it tastes that way too. High quality, cash only for a long time, but I think they take card now. Great service, but they only have two servers at a time. Each server is assigned to one half of the bar stool only restaurant. May need to wait 5 mins for a table inside, they also have outside seating. No ranch! Ketchup only, but I'm ok with that for here only:) Fries are solid. Secret menu items I like: Cheese fries, patty melt (so good) And the pies...did I mention the pies all have been great, just get them à la mode!! read more

Amazing service, the team members at the counter do a great job juggling a lot of customers during lunch hour. Refilling ketchup, offering more napkins, and refills. Great job. Food is solid and actually not too overpriced for the Westside. 20 years since I last ate here and was not disappointed. I like the steak burger and the sauce on it. Perhaps a little too much lettuce for me, but if you like big crisp lettuce in your burger, this is for you. Fries are standard, nothing special, but they do come out piping hot, which is nice. First time having the apple pie and we took it home. The pie has instructions and you need to pour the apple sauce/juice into the warm pie. Definitely a different kind of Apple Pie. The Apple Pan has such a great vibe! I would definitely recommend dining in and sitting inside at the counter for the full experience. Seating is limited, but I was able to walk in and find a seat right away on a weekday around lunchtime. Parking is street parking only, but I was able to find a metered spot fairly easily. I ordered the Hickoryburger and fries, but didn't find either to be all that remarkable. The BBQ-like sauce on the burger looked more like ketchup and didn't taste too much like BBQ. The fries were your average hole-in-the-wall burger spot fries. However, the Banana Cream pie was delicious! There are much better burgers and fries in LA, but the diner-style vibe of the restaurant really adds to the experience and brings up the rating as a whole. read more

Apple Pan seems to be one of those establishments with a reputation that precedes itself. It has come highly recommended to me by several people, so I was excited to finally check it out after driving past it many times. The restaurant itself is pretty small, with the only seating option being bar stools around the main communal counter overlooking the grills. Seating is first come first serve, so there may be a wait depending on your party size and the time/day. I liked the simple yet charming retro decor; it felt like going back in time to a 50s diner. I ordered the standard hamburger with added cheese (which was an additional charge). I was honestly surprised with how average the burger tasted. While I appreciated that it was made fresh and right in front of me, I feel like the hamburger patty was lacking any sort of distinct flavor. It almost seemed like someone forgot to add salt, unfortunately. Considering the price and portion size, I'd rather get an In N Out burger. Thankfully, dessert made up for the lackluster burger. Even though this place is known for its apple pies, I did deviate and ordered a slice of the coconut cream, my absolute favorite pie flavor. It was delightful! Creamy, luscious, and comforting - exactly what I want a pie to be. I scarfed it down so quickly that I forgot to snap a photo of it. My true rating is 3.75/5, but I rounded up to 4 since I am open to revisiting and ordering different menu items. I still need to try the apple pie, after all! read more

Perfect casual dinner spot to go with a friend (or solo). You sit around the "kitchen" at the counter so you get some really cool diner vibes. Great burger! wouldn't say my "best" ? Can definitely taste the freshness of the ingredients. Its alot of greens and this is coming from someone who likes the salad in the burger as well. I wanted to ask for a raw onion but it was too late by then. I tried both the hickory and steak both good! my hickory was a little to sweet and a bit too much ketchup, I just balanced it with the mustard. wish I tried the fries but dare I say I think the banana cream pie was worth going there for? you be the judge! Ambiance was chill in the huge seating in the back, love that but I think people go inside for that vintage vibe. Well, after an Oscar Event, my friend and I were starving so we stopped off at Apple Pan. In front of the line, an unhappy customer explained that they screwed up her order but didn't give them the accurate refund. It was her first time there, and it was her last time ever coming back never. I told her that that was an unusual circumstance, and I had never experienced that in all these years I've been doing... well, clearly, I jinxed it. My friend went home and in her package was one wrong pie ( she ordered an apple pie and got a coconut cream one) and a mediocre tasting chocolate cream. Big disappointment. To be clear, it was 8p...not closing time! My deconstructed tuna sandwich was perfect. I love this place but 2 back to back mistakes was not a good experience and hopefully, not going to happen again PLEASE. This is our 2nd time here since the late 90's! Because we don't hardly come out to West LA area...so in a way you can say it's our 1st time here in a looooonnggg time! We came on Sunday late noon, and luckily there was room inside. They have outdoor dining now in the back, and if you do that, you order your food outside and they only take Credit Cards now, NO cash. I do love their Steak Burger, my hubby said that it was smaller now, compared to when they made it back in the late 90's, it was tasty. My favorite was their Banana Cream Pie...they put Real bananas in the pie, not just all cream!! Other places I've been to, only have the cream and they just put a few slices of banana on top of the whipped cream. Not here, you get lots of banana. Service was below neutral. We had to ask for more water, when our glasses were empty, they don't come by (at least when we were there), and ask how everything is and my hubby had to ask about our fries, because after we got our burgers, that was it. FYI they have gone cashless. I have a soft spot for the Apple Pan. Some of my best core LA memories involve this restaurant. This restaurant feels like an old-fashioned diner from the 50s. Some of the workers have been there for a long time, I believe one of them has been there for almost 40 years. The service is quick and without frills. I always get the hickory burger with cheese and a side of fries. They brush the meat patty with a sweet barbecue-like sauce. It can be messy so grab your napkins. To end my meal I always order the apple pie with vanilla ice cream and a cup of coffee. This is a kind of place where you can have a random conversation with a stranger who's sitting next to you at the counter. They are not overly sweet. You can ask their staff also which pies they think are best. I love the chocolate cream pie.

Parking is on the street. They removed their original parking lot to create great outdoor seating and dining.

Patties seem about the same. Rock n roll manager Irving azoff purchased the apple pan a couple years ago but pledged to keep things substantially the same. They do take credit card now which is nice.
What's the difference between the steak burger and the hickory burger?
Same burgers except the addition of hickory flavoring on the meat. It's my favorite!
Do you sell your bbq sauce?
You can get a side order. I am not sure if they sell it by the bottle. Great idea, though, if enough people ask for it, maybe we can buy a pint.

it's less busy than during prime lunch hour for sure!
