A nice fancy Michelin entry hosted in a food hall of all things. They typically have the longest line in the hall. You order at a counter where you are given a number and the waiters find you when the food's done. Only real concern is finding a table in time before that. The hall's chaotic but they are pretty good at wiping the tables. Definitely sample the sauces before you commit. Their menu leans more towards seafood. Had the octopus tacos and ceviche which had nice presentation and a fresh distinct unami taste. Menu's on the pricey side since its made to order seafood but it's a nice treat. Been wanting to come here for quite some time now. I was finally able to make it on a Wednesday during lunch. We got there around 11:15am (they open at 11:30am) and the parking lot was quite empty. We sat at the bar before they opened (we asked some workers and they said that that was fine) and once they opened our orders were taken. I recommend you snag a bar seat if there are any rather than waiting in line. Although, the line was really short when we arrived anyway. Food was amazing. Finally came to enjoy the 10 course tasting menu this past month and I'm very glad that I did. It was a very cool experience, though admittedly I was pretty damn full by course 8. The conchas in the very beginning -- oysters and a blood clam -- were probably my favorite dish of the night, to be honest. I enjoyed pretty much everything, save for one dish that was made of kanpachi head pate. just a bit gritty and not my favorite flavor or texture. Exceptional - Octopus and Smoked Kanpachi Tacos were delicious, as was the Coctel Mixto and Camarones al Mojo. The Fried Rockfish Collars were fried well, but not as standout as these other dishes. We ordered the Ceviche de Kanpachi, (2) Tostada de Atun, Shrimp Aguachile, Smoked Kanpachi Taco, Baja Shrimp Taco, and Smoked Kanpachi Tostada. We arrived at Holbox prior to attending an LAFC game recently, both of which are in close proximity! My buddy put me on this spot, saying "Were about to have Michellin Star Mexican food." Now I felt boujie. Excited none the less. The line can get very long here, patience, it is worth it. We got here at a not so busy time, however when we sat down a HUGE line appeared out of nowhere. My buddy ordered tacos de pulpo and scallops tacos, the tortillas are blue! I ordered Camerones mojo de ajo, scallops tacos. I started with the veggies (little tomatoes in like a aguas chiles thing) and the fresh avocado SO DELICIOUS. Mojo came with a toasted bread that is great for dipping into the excellent mojo de ajo sauce after you eat the shrimp. The shrimp were delectable. Comes with extra mojo de ajo butter as needed. The black beans and green rice tasted home made. I love scallops and the scallops taco was one of the best ive ever had. Honestly a unique Michellin-Starred-Mariscos-LA-Mexican-Food experience you can honestly only aquire here. It's a food court location with lots of tables first come first serve. The restaurant is best known as LA's most affordable Michelin-starred restaurant as it received one Michelin star in 2024 and 2025. Location/Parking: Major cross streets are 37th and Grand. Not the greatest of neighborhoods. You might see occasional broken windows glass laying around. Located inside the Mercado La Paloma food hall. Parking can be found in the surrounding streets. There's also a small parking lot that you can park up front. It's not free though. Ambiance/Decor: Not much ambiance, but their seafood counter is neat. You can sit next near the small lobster tank that they have. If you don't find seats at the bar area, you can find communal tables through out the food hall and outside in their outdoor patio area Service: Service was alright. Staffer behind the cashier was informational about the shop, didn't make us feel rushed to order, and handed us a number to put on top of available table. Can't say enough about how pleasantly surprised I am with Holbox! The line was already out the door when I came on a Friday evening around 6 and I was worried it would be a very long wait, but the line went by quite quickly and we only ended up waiting 30 minutes. We were able to sit down at the bar which was also a bonus. I had heard about Holbox from social media and had my skepticism, but the food really does warrant a Michelin Star. We ordered 2 scallop and 2 octopus tacos, the ceviche mixto, and the branzino filet bowl. Everything was so delicious, but the highlight for me was 100% the ceviche mixto. We've been here 4 times now and I have absolutely no notes - this place is 100% deserving of at least one michelin star, and the fact that it is relatively affordable is the cherry on top. Holbox is one of the many amazing restaurants in a food hall We've probably had almost 80% of the menu now, but our favorites and must orders are the Scallop aguachile, smoked kanpachi taco, tostada atun, live uni & scallops, the pulpo taco! I've been to mexico city and the food at Holbox is on par if not even better than some of the spots I've tried there! Be prepared to wait upto an hour on weekends, but you can avoid the wait by going on a weekday or lining up before Holbox opens! If you go with a group and end up facing a long wait, I would recommend having some people go in and try some smaller bites from other restaurants in the food hall (we love the tamales from Komal) since there's no wait for those! Waited in line for an hour and the food was worth the wait. This restaurant is located inside a food court but the line was wrapped out the door. I ordered the ceviche mixto and it came with 3 tostadas. There were lots of seafood and avocado slices. I also tried the taco de pulpo en su tinta. The octopus in both was very soft and tender. There were three soft scallops in the scallop taco. The smoked kanpachi taco was a little bit spicy but the smokey flavor hit the spot. We got the tuna tartar tostada, octopus taco, kanpachi taco, scallop taco, and the mixed ceviche. Chips and salsa were $1 so I went ahead and threw that in the order as well. Everything was excellent. The tuna tartar tasted fresh and the tostada was super crispy. Octopus in the taco was so tender and I couldn't tell that it was fried. The konpachi taco had a lot of smokey flavor, which I loved. Scallops were also tender and tasty. Mixed ceviche was a lot and also came with several tostadas. My friends rave about this place, and it's immediately apparent why. Holbox is probably the most affordable Michelin star restaurant in LA, and they're always really busy. We were lucky enough to visit when they had a shorter line, and we ordered and got our food really quickly. I honestly can't remember exactly what we ordered because we ended up just ordering a bunch of things and doing family style, but the takeaway across the board is the same: everything is really fresh and delicious. The uni was very small, dark yellow in color with visible blood veins, and didn't taste as fresh as before. This spot is located in a great food hall with plenty of seating and a very cool, clean vibe. I loved that they have the fresh fish on display in the fridge. The Raw Bar (The Stars of the Show) * Scallop and Spot Prawn Aguachiles (9/10): The sauce was a perfect mix of sweet and citrusy. Both the scallop and prawn were incredibly fresh. A huge highlight was that they fried the spot prawn heads- just like at the sushi restaurants - so good. * kanpachi and Uni Tostada (8/10): The kanpachi was light with zero fishy taste. The uni was the cherry on top--perfectly creamy and a great balance to the acidity of the dish. . Blue fin tuna tostada (10/10): the texture of the tuna was perfectly fatty while also reminiscent of poke. I liked how it wasn't over powered by the citrus. If I come back next time, I will order at least 2-3 of these. The Tacos * Smoked Kanpachi Taco (10/10): This was easily my favorite taco. It had a nice crisp from being deep-fried, and the smoky fish paired perfectly with the gooey Oaxaca cheese. Since I'm allergic to peanuts, I couldn't try the chili oil sauce, but even without it, the flavor and texture were great. * Pulpo Taco (6/10): The octopus itself had a great char and flavor, but the sofrito sauce was very bitter and sour, which wasn't really my cup of tea. * Scallop Taco (6/10): I love scallops, so I had high hopes, but I was pretty underwhelmed. Holbox showed up on my radar when I was recently staying at a property not too far from the Mercado La Paloma in South Central LA. There's an onsite parking lot, but I took advantage of a nearby commercial zone curbside space because it was well past 6 pm during my visit. That was the end time of the enforcement period for such a spot. The mercado was the home to several vendors, however Holbox was by far the most popular eatery with a line that extended out the door. The wait from the time I entered the queue to when I got a seat was only about 20 minutes. I counted about 16 available seats at the bar which was where I sat. I couldn't tell how many tables in the communal dining area were dedicated to Holbox versus the other businesses. Awards from Michelin and the LA Times were displayed on a high shelf behind the bar. A chilled locker containing seafood products (e.g. tuna, sea urchin, etc) was visible behind the chefs. As I sat and observed before ordering, I noticed the staff was very deliberate and precise with their actions. The two-sided menu featured ceviches, tostadas, shellfish, aguachiles, and cocktails on one page which were the raw items. The other page was dedicated to tacos, entrees, sides, desserts, and beverages. A worker approached from behind me to take my order which was a Tostada de Kanpachi + Uni, a Scallop Taco, and the Pulpo a la Brasas. The first two items came together while the octopus platter arrived by itself later. The taco consisted of three pieces of pan-seared diver scallop sourced from Maine. It was garnished with salsa, caramelized onions, tomato, and marinated fennel. The acidity from the tomatoes helped cut through the meaty scallops. The tostada was made up of Baja kanpachi ceviche along with 20 grams of uni (sea urchin roe) sourced from Santa Barbara. The house made corn tostada was thinner and crispier than what I have been accustomed to. I guess that was why they were called tostadas raspadas ('scraped'). The uni was very fresh and sweet tasting. The octopus was described as mesquite grilled Yucatan. Normally when I order this item, it is served as one or two tentacles. In this case, it was six tentacles from a smaller mollusk that were incredibly tender. I don't know if it was cooked sous vide, but I have never tasted octopus with this type of soft texture. It was garnished with almond pipian along with avocado slices and cherry tomatoes on the side. A dish of cilantro rice and black beans came with the order. Three blue corn tortillas were also provided so you could make your own soft tacos. This presentation was a steal at $26 for a Michelin-starred place. The service from the staff was efficient. For a Latin American seafood counter inside a food hall, I was impressed with the quality of the food that I tried at very reasonable prices too. I had the most amazing experience at Holbox! Friends of mine gathered here to celebrate our birthdays and they are well-versed on the menu and the wait times. During the week is the best time to go, I was told. On the weekends, a line starts forming before it even opens. If you are early enough, you can find a spot in the counter seating where you can see them cook the dishes. We were lucky to have friends get there early for the line as the rest of us find a spot for our group, I had the Sopa de Mariscos all to myself and it was so delicious: it is a seafood soup with shrimp, rock fish and fish sausage. The broth alone was delicious and it was very flavorful and fresh. I also had the smoked kanpachi taco. It tasted something I never had before and it was so delicious! We had a few dishes going around and everything was so delicious. Worth trying once at least, not sure about twice. This is my second time visiting it, and this place became viral online because of the Michelin Bib. I'd say it didn't live up to my expectations this time. There's not a lot of similar place like this that's not pretentious and down to earth yet got recognition on their food, so go support them. We ordered 4 different dishes to share, I'm a huge ceviche fan. However, this time neither of the ceviche impresses me like "wow", I remembered the first time when I visit 1.5 years ago it was wow. This time it was lack of flavour, fish is fresh but that's the bare minimum. FOOD scallop aguachile (8.8/10): My fav out of the 4 dishes. Scallop is very fresh and sweet, love the sauce in there, nice kick of spice. Recommend to eat it with chips and get a spoon to scoop up the sauces. ceviche de atun (7.3/10): It's alright, I think it's lack of flavour, fish is not chalky and fresh (scallop is fresher). I prefer Peruvian ceviches so this is not as soupy as I wish it to be, not even that, it's just not as flavourful. It's worth trying but definitely had better, ceviche mixto (7.5/10): Personally prefer this over the Blu-fin tuna, but if you prefer tuna go for that one instead. I had the same thing a year and half ago and it was flavourful, you can taste the lime/ lemon juice. This is just alright. pulpo a las brasas (7/10): Grilled octopus, I'd recommend you get the tacos if raw fish is not for you or you can't eat it. Comparing to the raw fish dish, I think this is the least preferred. Not that it's bad, but it is quite bland and straight forward comparing to their raw dishes. Didn't reach for a second bite when I have the other dishes on the table. Not flavourful. LINE & PARKING For the line, it's not that crazy if you avoid the weekends. We went on a weekday dinner, it's a fast line like 13 min? Parking is accessible too they have a parking lot at the food court. OVERALL Worth going once because you won't get to see a lot of Michelin Bib around in LA, but it's up to your palette if you want to revisit this place again. Recommend raw fish over cooked dishes here, if you have to choose cook dishes - tacos are better than entree in my opinion. I also feel like because it got viral they got lazy with their food quality, because there's always a line regardless of what they deliver. I hope they keep up what got them a Michelin Bib. I really love seeing a casual spot in food court like this to be on numerous LA food guides, but aside this I don't really feel self-motivated to revisit this place again (unless my friend suggest to come back). Que Mariscos mas DELICIOSOS.... Some of the best Ceviche I've had in a while along with fish and shrimp tacos. Their added toppings to each taco just make them so much more special because the Flavors just work! Their ceviche mixto with 3 tostadas Raspadas was the cherry on top it was so good, the perfect acidity and flavors were there, no need for salsa or anything just like that. Love the simplicity of this place yet elevated in so many ways. The got Michelin for a reason and when you see the line and you taste their food you'll know why. It's worth the wait, I can promise you that it goes fast think we waited 35 min. Once you get inside you order and you grab a table. They have some seats by the bar and those are first come first serve but you have to be ready to catch em quick. While we were waiting for a table and were able to snag one the workers there work so quick to clear the table and clean it. So hard working and very nice of you need anything. I've been here many times now and it's also delicious. The lines are getting longer due to their popularity and it's well deserved because the food is amazing. They know the lines are long and they do their best to keep patrons comfortable like handling out umbrellas and water when it's hot out. I've tried every taco and the smoked kanpachi is a must try (a bit spicy and cheesy). You can't go wrong when ordering the octopus. Holbox never misses -- but be prepared to wait about an hour... totally worth it. We got the fish and camarón ceviche -- super fresh, bright, and perfectly balanced. The tostadas de atún were just as good, layered with so much flavor. Pair it with some of the hot sauces! Also tried the fish and shrimp tacos -- both , light, crispy, and not greasy at all. Paired everything with a sparkling lemonade which hit the spot. Honestly reminded me of the fresh seafood I had in Valle de Guadalupe. High quality, vibrant, and so satisfying. I went to Holbox on a Thursday afternoon around noon. When we arrived, the line was long but moved quickly--it took about 40 minutes to reach the front and order, but once we did, the food came out fast. Everyone in line (and working there) was super friendly and cheerful, which made the wait feel shorter. The food was amazing--so fresh and a great value. Holbox is located in a food market but it was the only one with a line right by the entrance though so it's hard to miss. There's a paid parking lot right out front but also free street parking right outside I came on a Wednesday night around 6pm and there was a short line outside the door with the menu on a QR code. Once I got to the front of the outside line, the employee let me into another line inside. From there, they had 4 people taking orders at a time. They then give you a number and you can sit at their bar or wherever you'd like and they bring the food to you Smoked kanpachi tostada: 5/5 this was my favorite thing we ordered. Super fresh and yummy Sea urchin: 5/5 this was also super good. The sea urchin was literally still moving when it was on our plate. Expect a wait if you order this though bc it took maybe 35 minutes to come out while everything else only took 5-10 minutes Taco do pulpo en su tinta (octopus taco): 4/5 there was nothing wrong with this, it just wasn't my favorite Note: even though the line might look long, it moves pretty fast. Absolutely delicious! So glad my husband and I got to try this place after talking about it for so long. The best part, didn't have to wait super long in line to order. We got here about 815pm on Friday night, paid for parking and got in line and waited about 25min to reach the front to order. It's in a food hall so there are plenty of seating. My top 3 standouts were the scallop aguachile, blue fin tuna tostada and the octopus taco. The scallop aguachile was SO good! It was fresh and was swimming in a delicious lemony sauce! The blue fin tuna tostada was so fresh and flavorful and last but not least the octopus taco was my favorite of the four tacos we got. Loved the char on it. We had so much fun on our last visit that we decided to visit Mercado Paloma again this weekend. This time we set our eyes on Holbox after reading its raving reviews. A side note: Their onsite parking lot is quite small ($2.20/hr.), but the closed DMV lot next door is free on the weekends. It was just past 11 a.m., and there was already a long line. However, we joined the queue after someone told us it moves pretty fast once the restaurant opens. It indeed moved quickly after 11:30 a.m. and we were able to reach the counter in 25 minutes. The attentive staff handed out the menu and answered any question we had while we were in line, and we were able to make our decisions without rushing through it. For this visit we order the following dishes: Pulpo a Las Brasas (Octopus Combo): It was pretty much a complete meal with grilled octopus, rice, beans, avocado, and tomatoes. All nicely served on a wooden board. The octopus, drizzled in a tangy and slightly spicy creamy sauce, was soft but with very nice texture. The cilantro rice paired perfectly with the black bean soup. Bread and avocado complemented well with the rest of the dish. Camarones Al Mojo (Shrimp Combo): Another very nice combo plate also served on a wooden board. With sliced avocado, tomatoes, toasted bread, black bean, cilantro rice, and the star of the dish: fresh and juicy shrimps simmered in a tangy and slightly spicy creamy sauce. Smoked Kanpachi Tostada: The chopped scallop, shrimp and fish were super fresh and juicy. The tangy and creamy sauce brought out the texture and flavor of the seafood. The crispy tortilla went perfectly with rest of the ingredients. Taco de Pulpo en Su Tinta: Beautifully braised octopus tentacle dressed with its own ink and slightly spicy sauce, then laid on top of a soft blue tortilla. Smoked Kanpachi Taco: The pleasantly seasoned fish filling has a velvety, pâté-like texture, and wrapped in a soft tortilla. What a wonderful culinary experience. Truly worth the wait. read more

I did come on a weekday however. I'd say everyone pretty much ordered the same dishes. sea urchin was definitely a must try. people either ordered the uni tostada or enrizo. I got the enrizo and the combo of scallops and uni hit the spot. another popular dish was the braised octopus taco. the octopus was braised with aromatics until tender, then finished with a char on the grill or fried for texture, served with a rich, savory calamari ink. this one was prob the best dish. not everything on the menu was raw. they did offer few cooked dishes so for people who aren't into raw seafoods they could try those. parking lot is small. that would be my only reason why I would be hesitant to come, otherwise there were many other dishes I liked to try. read more

Lives up to the hype. Worth the wait and worth every penny. Everything was delicious, well season. Ceviche and aguachile were full of flavor yet still light. The octopus was cooked to perfection, not chewy. The accompanying hot sauces provide a spicy and fruity accompaniment to the tacos. Finally tried Holbox and it lived up to the hype! Went a few months ago but we ran out of time and didn't get to try. The seafood was insanely fresh and honestly there wasn't a single thing I didn't enjoy! We got the ceviche de kanpachi, ceviche mixto, tuna tartare tostada, tostado de lenguado, shrimp aguachile, and the scallop aguachile which was my fav! There's parking in the back when you pull in. Just know there's usually a wait. We waited about 45 minutes, then ordered, got a number, and wandered around to find a table. It's a little hectic but totally worth! Yes the line goes outside but gawd dayum that's elevated seafood! Absolutely delicious, I enjoyed everything I ordered but the scallops aguachile was absolutely divine. If you eat outside at a certain hour it can be very gorgeous in that fancy looking patio in the middle of parking, eating inside is a bit crammed. From $7 filling tacos to $55 lobster meals. They got something for all budgets! Amazing! If I have to find a flaw, parking in this area during work hours is an absolute pain, everything including street is full. I had to park a distance and walk over because the lot was too full. There is a short period of time after 5pm things clear up momentary because people leaving work and school. If this place was closer to where I lived, id probably come here once a week. It's delicious. Props to owner for quality and actually making prices reasonable for the working person. It's rare to find places to bring this level of quality without the disgusting nobu like prices. read more

Came here for lunch today and it was delicious! There's a tiny parking lot in front which is diabolically packed so I recommend looking for street parking elsewhere. We got in line around 12 and were seated very quickly after deliberating what we wanted to order in line. We got to sit at the restaurant's bar counter and it was great! A nice fancy Michelin entry hosted in a food hall of all things. They typically have the longest line in the hall. You order at a counter where you are given a number and the waiters find you when the food's done. Only real concern is finding a table in time before that. The hall's chaotic but they are pretty good at wiping the tables. Definitely sample the sauces before you commit. Their menu leans more towards seafood. Had the octopus tacos and ceviche which had nice presentation and a fresh distinct unami taste. Menu's on the pricey side since its made to order seafood but it's a nice treat. You seriously have no idea how much I have been wanting to come here since they opened up lol. Holbox is located near USC in a Mercado kind of thing. Parking is a little tough inside but there's also street parking. Once we parked we noticed a long line for Holbox. Surprisingly though it actually went by quick! As you're waiting in line, they offer you a menu so you kind of know what to get by the time you order lol. As I prepared my order, the cashier did ask me if I had any allergies. I told her I'm sensitive to crab and lobster. She mentioned that they do grill the lobster on the same grill. No worries! I ended up getting 2 tacos just for my first time! (Def will not be the last). I got 1 smoked kanpachi taco. Omg. The flavors were sooo deep. I loved that there was a spice around the plate. There was a salsa on top along with a slice of avocado I also got the taco de pescado al Carbon. Amazing fish. The Mercado itself is large! So finding a spot wasn't too hard.
