3.5/5: I would say Holbox is definitely overrated. For sure their ingredients are fresh but there wasn't the wow factor that I was expecting from all its surrounding hype. I ordered the ceviche mixto (4.5/5), whose sauce provided a nice tang with a bit of spice (some peppercorn perhaps?). The baja fish taco (2.5/5), on the other hand, was disappointing. I tasted mostly the breading, which closely resembled a spice mix used in fried chicken, and the spicy sauce was quite overwhelming relative to the gentler, sweeter nature of the fish. On the plus side, the mayo accompaniment was quite lovely. I must say their tortillas were their best offering. Crunchy, light, and fresh. You could really taste the smokiness from the grill. On Friday evening, September 4th (yesterday) after work, I went to Holbox with my mom and my two brothers. I think I've been to Holbox about four or five times now. The last time I went was on October 3rd and September 12th of last year, so it had been almost a year since my last visit. The very first time was last summer with about 10 members from my Korean community group. We all thought the food was really delicious, and that's why I kept coming back. As you would expect from such a popular restaurant, there are always a lot of people here. Yesterday was no exception, and there was a pretty long line outside. Fortunately, the line moved fairly quickly, so it didn't feel too bad. After we decided what to order, I was reminded again that the prices here are quite expensive for a restaurant located inside a food court. Last year, I ordered for all four of us at once, and the total came to almost $200. So this time, we decided to pay separately for my mom and myself, while my two brothers each paid for their own meals. I ordered two of my absolute favorite dishes here, the Tostada de Kanpachi & Uni. This is something I really love because it tastes so fresh and delicious every time I have it. It's definitely a must-order dish for me. I also ordered two Taco de Pescado al Carbón. Those four items alone came to about $70. I also remembered that I had tipped way too much here last year, so this time I only left a $5 tip. (It is the food court system, even they bring the foods to our table) That brought my total to $75. My brothers ordered the large Brazilian fish, the Tostada Uni, and ceviche. Everything we had was delicious overall, but honestly, the tacos I ordered yesterday were not really for my taste at all. So next time I come here, I don't think I'll order the same tacos again. On the way to the restroom, I noticed people at another table eating lobster. I asked them where they ordered it from, and they told me they ordered it from Holbox. It looked absolutely delicious, so I'm definitely going to try the lobster next time I come here. I also really like that they have a water station near the section where people line up outside. There are cups available there, so you can help yourself to water while waiting, which is very convenient. One downside is that the restroom always has a noticeable smell. Fortunately, it's located quite far away from the dining area, but it also doesn't look particularly clean or sanitary. Another thing is that you have to eat certain dishes, especially the tostadas and tacos, with your hands. I personally don't really like eating food with my hands, but with tostadas and tacos, there's really no other way. After washing my hands in the restroom, the smell of the liquid soap is also quite unpleasant and strong. Unfortunately, I can still smell the soap on my hands while I'm eating, which bothers me quite a bit. And because Holbox is always so incredibly popular, finding a table can be difficult. Luckily, we were able to get a table pretty quickly yesterday. Overall, I still really enjoy coming here for the fresh and delicious seafood, especially the Tostada de Kanpachi & Uni. Once you get your food, you'll need to find your own seat somewhere in the food court, which can be a little chaotic when it's busy. The seafood was definitely the highlight for me. Everything tasted really fresh, bright, and limey which worked perfectly with the tacos. The light brown one had a unique flavor to it and was my favorite but also the spiciest so be aware. This is a very well known Michelin starred spot known for their amazing seafood as well as unfortunately long lines because of how great the food is. Who knew after a sporting event there would be no lines and we would be lucky to enjoy such delicious food. The fried shrimp taco was by far like no other. The soft blue corn hand made tortilla with the most delicious fried shrimp was impeccable. The shrimp prawns are so delicate flavorful and cooked to perfection. I stayed at USC hotel so I decided to give this place a try since I heard about it from YouTube. The place is inside a food hall and shares tables with the other restaurants. The line went outside the building, but it moved decently fast. After ordering you get a number and they will deliver the food to your table. I got a variety of their tacos. Each taco had a unique twist to it, and tasted really good. They also had a cool black tortilla which had a nice texture. I especially like the fried fish one as it had a mellow yet delicious flavor. Holbox has been on my list forever, and I'm so glad we finally got to try it! Located inside a market, Holbox definitely lives up to the hype. If you want to sit in the bar area, I would recommend having someone wait in line while another person looks for a seat, especially when it's busy. We tried most of their highly recommended dishes, and honestly, I can still remember the first bite of each one. The flavors were that memorable. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, and their ceviche was probably some of the freshest and most flavorful I've ever had. The freshness is truly undeniable. Make sure to try their hot sauces as well. They add so much flavor and are definitely worth trying. Some of the recommended dishes had flavors that were a little similar to each other, but overall, the quality, freshness, and taste definitely made up for it. First, street parking is decent you don't need to park in that lot. 2nd - the line is always long regardless of when you go. You can go in the Mercado while others are holding your group's place in the line for a browse or an agua Fresca tho! 3rd - GET THE SMOKED KANPACHI TOSTADA. this was the highlight of the meal. We were so excited to try this Michelin star resturaunt in the heart of dtla! The ordering process was quick and efficient, and since it's located inside a food hall, they bring the food directly to your table. The prices were also very reasonable--honestly not much more expensive than your typical Mexican restaurant, especially considering the quality and freshness of the seafood. The only downside was the service after we were seated. Everyone was friendly, but we had to ask multiple times for an item we needed, and it unfortunately never arrived. We had an extra delicious time eating ceviche tostadas, grilled fish, scallop tacos and shrimp aguachile with homemade tortillas. Blown away! This is one of the best Mexican seafood places I ever visited- and I am not the one only who thinks so because there always seems to be a line out the door! Always the freshest seafood with layers of flavor, and unique spices. We tried the kanpachi in both the tostada and taco and they were completely different! It moves fast, and the food comes out almost immediately after you order so you will not be waiting long. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with anything here, but here's what I got that I loved. We got a fish and shrimp tostada, Mixto Ceviche with fish, shrimp, and octopus, the scallop ceviche, octopus taco, and scallop taco. Every bite was so generous with big portions of fresh seafood and big flavors. The octopus taco was so tender and delicious as well. One of the most fun parts of the meal is their wide variety of self-serve sauces and salsas. While the line looks intimidating, it is very organized with staff managing the line and they do keep it moving. They've added more outdoor seating right outside the market + a few spots in the parking lot courtyard. If you're looking for a slightly quieter environment, outside is preferable. As for parking, the lot directly attached to the market is small and paid, but the DMV has opened the back gate allowing much more free parking if you head to the back corner of the market's lot. Note the local fishes tend to be a little tougher with texture while something imported can be butter smooth. Came here 20 minutes before opening and there was already a line outside the building. We came on a Friday and it took 50 minutes to get in and order after doors opened. The restaurant is located inside a food court with lots of seating but it does get pretty crowded and it was a bit difficult to find seats. Once you find a seat though, the servers are pretty good at getting your food to you. We ordered two ceviches, five tostadas, and one taco which ended up being a lot for a group of three people. The tostadas are basically the same as the ceviche but on a chip so I'd recommend just getting one or the other. My favorite was the bluefin tuna so I'd recommend either the tostada or ceviche de atun. The yellowtail and halibut were also good. The tostada de jurel was pretty spicy, so if you can't handle spice then I'd say avoid that one. Honestly, you can't really go wrong with any of their ceviches or tostadas. read more

OMG!!! Talk about a feast for your eyes, mouth and stomach!!!! WOW!!!! I've been telling all my friends about this place. I don't even know where to start! A friend of mine read about this seafood restaurant as one of the top restaurants in LA and since I love eating (don't know if I am foodie but I love to eat), we had to give it a shot and boy it was definitely worth the shot. This place is in the heart of LA, I'm not a big fan of driving to LA but for an awesome restaurant, I'll make it an exception. First off, they do not serve alcohol. I usually love my oysters and ceviche with an ice-cold beer, but I had a diet coke instead and it definitely did not hit the spot but it was still good. I don't know if you can BYOB. We first started with the Sea Urchin ($28) - The sea urchin was on a bed of bay scallop's. so much flavor with a delicate sweetness. Ceviche Mixto (Shrimp and Octopus) ($23) - huge portion, perfect with their home-made hot sauce and crunchy corn tortillas. Shrimp Aguachile ($28) - raw marinated shrimp with fried shrimp heads. Love the sourness of the shrimp and the crunchy shrimp heads. perfect combination. 6 piece mixed raw oysters ($22) - yum!!!!! nice and meaty and the perfect paring with their home-made hot sauce. Camarones Al Mojo entree ($32) - HUGE prawns with garlic, butter and chile marinade. it was perfect with their rice and beans. My family of three had lunch here on Saturday. We got there at 11:15 and had to wait about 45 minutes (which we expected). There was plenty of parking in the adjacent lot (I believe this is the DMV lot and was available as DMV was closed; during weekdays I can imagine the parking can be challenging). Plenty of seating as well given it's part of a larger "food court" and lots of communal tables, both inside and outside. We sat outside as the weather was perfect. I can see what the hype is about. For the most part, the food is super fresh, presented in an awesome manner and the cost is very reasonable for the quality of the seafood. I only wish they sold beer/wine as it would be been perfect to enjoy a beer with some of the dishes. We had: Erizo (Sea Urchin) - 5/5 - Probably the best dish of the meal. Ceviche made of fresh urchin and scallops, one of the best fresh urchin dishes I have ever had. Pata de Mula (raw blood clams) - 4/5 - The sauce on the clams was very good, my only "knock" is that the sauce overpowered the clams so it was hard to taste the actual clams. Spot Prawn/Scallop Aguachile - 4.5/5 - I though the scallops and the aquachile sauce were great. The spot prawns were a bit flavorless. I would order this again just with the scallops next time. Coctel Mixto - 3/5 - Maybe my least favorite dish of the meal. The taste was fine, I just thought the coctel "sauce" (more like a cold soup) was overpowering for the fresh seafood. Octopus Taco - 5/5 - The other favorite of the meal, probably the best octopus tacos I've had. Overall a great meal, and I would look forward to going back. read more
