Komal is located in the Mercado de Paloma. I saw the Flor De Calabaza Quesadilla for $11.50 and that's all I wanted from them. I expected the squash blossoms to be cooked, but it was rather just added to the quesadilla for looks. So it was rather raw still. Taco Sonia came with red salsa that has a kick so next time, I'd order the salsa on the side but the nopales, mashed potato with the meats were great together. It's a big sized taco. My boyfriend and I had seen Komal before at Mercado La Paloma and just somehow never made it there until now. What finally pushed us to try it was seeing Chef Fátima Juárez get nominated for a James Beard Emerging Chef award!! That's a big deal! We ordered online and got the tlacoyos, flautas de ayocote, tacos de suadero, flor de calabaza, and both aguas frescas, and it ended up being such a fun little spread. Everything tasted authentic. I also really liked the Mercado La Paloma setting. It's right across from Holbox and the marketplace is very casual. Fun fact apparently Mercado La Paloma used to be an old garment factory! We also loved the staff, you can tell they work so hard and make everything with real care and pride. I heard the tortilla suppliers of holbox opened their own restaurant in the Mercado la Paloma so I had to try out their food. I ordered the taco sonia, taco de suadero, and taco de costilla. There was no line at 8pm so the order came pretty fast too. The taxo de suadero blew my mind. The bits of fat mixed with the meat were incredibly flavorful. The addition of the sauce gave a nice refreshing kick along with a squeeze of lime. The brisket was so tender I didn't even have to chew much before it melted in my mouth. The taco de costilla also greatly exceeded my expectations. The crispiness of the potatoes and the tenderness of the beef was a nice contrast in texture. Add the caramelized onions in and the flavors were a nice mix of sweet and salty. The tacos sonia was not exactly my cup of tea though. I think the problem was the excess amount of cactus and mashed potatoes. I think if i asked for less or none, the meats would really shine at the cost of the texture contrast. While detouring through a side street near USC looking for freeway entrance, we were intrigued by the sound of Mexican folklore music and kids rehearsing dances in front of a small plaza. It turned out to be an Oaxacan festival at the Mercado La Paloma, a cultural center that houses many interesting restaurants. Since we haven't had lunch yet, and by chance there was an open street parking space, we decided to stop and try some of their food. There were plenty of food options and every single one looked good. After going around the hall 3 or 4 times, we decided on Komal and their Taco Sonia. When it was our turn to order, we saw a small plaque in Spanish at the cashier displaying their daily specials with some cute dish names, so we asked the staff to add 2 of the items containing the word that we knew (quesadilla) to our order. It turned out "chapulines" were grasshoppers and "huitlacoches" were corn fungi. With some laughs and big smiles, we told the staff to go ahead with the orders. After all, grasshoppers are the protein of the future, and they have been on my must try item list for the longest time. The orders were delivered to our table in about 10 minutes and here are the verdicts: Taco Sonia: First thing that hit me was the red sauce, it was tangy, savory and spicy. The corn tortilla was soft and slightly chewy. The seared beef rib pieces were super tender and flavorful. The ground pork was quite savory. The mashed potato was soft but not mushy, and the cactus strips were nicely crunchy. Quesadilla de Chapulines: Visually the dish can be uninviting for those not used to see grasshoppers as consumable items. However, from the taste standpoint they were quite delicious with shrimp-like texture. The tanginess from lime gave a pleasant zing to the dish and were nicely balanced out by cheese and tortilla. Huitlacoche Quesadilla: The corn fungi, with the texture reminiscent of eggplant flesh, were well seasoned and tasted quite delicious. The corn tortilla was soft, and the cheese and salsa brought all the flavors together. The prices were moderate. Nevertheless, the quality of the food and the experience made the meal totally worthy. Originally was in the area for Holbox but we literally could not stomach the line so we headed inside the food court to, our surprise, another Michelin guide Mexican spot. Komal is known for their house-made corn tortillas and I must say, I was impressed. There was a short line when we arrived and a regular in front of us was kind enough to guide us through the menu as we were contemplating while we waited. This spot is definitely pricier than we expected for a food court Mexican place, but it was well worth it! We got the Molotes de Platano to start and we were most shocked by this dish. It was sweet appetizer with a chocolate mole base and ripe plantains on top. We also got the Tacos de Suadero and Taco Sonia. While it doesn't look like much, it definitely can fill you up. If you want some of the best tortillas in all of LA then Komal has got you covered, and fun fact Holbox actually uses their tortillas themselves. If you want to jazz it up a bit go ahead and have them add carne to it. The tacos Suadero are also a must try here. full of flavor and juiciness of the meat and the cactus if you choose that version. I forgot the name but the wrapped tamale they make it delicious, so make sure you try that as well. Realistically you could probably order here, get your food, and finish before getting thru that huge line at holbox, so if you're looking for an alternative for food greatness in this food hall then Komal will definitely satisfy your cravings, and you will for sure be back for more. This Mercado is truly the best place to get dinner in all of LA. Komal is yet another great food stall in Mercado Paloma, with incredibly deep delicious flavors. Even for 2 people it was big! 8/10 The suadero tacos were tender and juicy. 8.5/10 The milpa salad was the absolute best complement - it lightened up the meal and was just so freaking good, I would eat that every day! 9.5/10 The taquitos honestly blew my mind. I don't normally like mole, but this mole is less sweet, and was addictive. I kept going back for more! Truly the best taquitos I've ever had in my life. 9.5/10 I had the cactus and cucumber drink and I absolutely loved it. Perfectly refreshing. You order at the counter and then get a number and choose your seat in the Mercado. It can get busy in the Mercado, especially on weekend, but we have always found good seating there. The chefs transform Mexican heirloom corn into fantastic masa that star in tacos, tlacoyos, mole, and quesadillas inspired from the streets of CDMX. Taco Sonia: The giant blue corn tortilla practically fills the basket. There's literally a lot to unpack here. There's a thin smear of frijoles - then meaty flavorful crumbles of chorizo. A slender strip of flat iron steak is cooked just enough to the point of tenderness with nice marbling and flavor. A smattering of mashed potatoes add both softness and some chunkiness. The nopales are the best part of the taco - slightly slippery, the long pickled green bean-like strands add some snap and a tangy counter to all the rich and delicious meats. The salsa roja, cilantro, and onions round out some excellent bites. While I want to try the rest of the menu, I also want to get two of these next time. Flor de Cabaza Quesadilla: The quesadilla is more balanced compared to the taco whose fillings grab much of the attention. The plantain balls were soft, super intense plantain flavor with stringy cheese inside, surrounded by a mole with the most delicious spice blend, not too heavy on the cocoa, and fresh herbs. The squash blossom quesadilla is such a star. The blossom, the cheese, the corn, and wow, that tortilla. The flavor train kept speeding along with the brisket tacos. The meat really shined bright with this one, and the salsa with it was the perfect amount of spice and tomato flavor. And then again, the tortilla was on another level. Phenomenal. The steak n potato and the Sonia were fine, but the other ingredients overshadowed the meat, which is why our favorite was the brisket. The pork stew tamal had a lot going on. So we went to try the grasshopper quesadilla. We were so excited to try it!. We had high hopes since they received a michilin shoutout in their guide. But we were disappointed. The service was great and everyone who worked there was great but the food was underwhelming. The grasshopper was crunchy and nutty. Subtle flavor to it. They were however all placed at the bottom of the tortilla not evenly apread out. The tortilla was dry and the cheese inside was burnt. The whole thing was kind of a mess and lacked flavor.
