Love coming to Sonora town when in Downtown it has been a couple of months since I've last been here and it definitely feels good to be back. I walked in and was instantly greeted by the staff. They are always so kind and so nice. The interior has changed a bit since I last came but it definitely is still wonderful. Their prices are still very reasonable. I have 2 chivis, 2 tacos and an Agua de coco horchata. Everything came out very fast especially since it was not as busy and it was around 3pm so I came at a good time. I've heard so many amazing things about Sonoratown! My fiance and I decided to stop here before a concert downtown. Some things I noticed were limited seating area, but we were able to snag a table after only waiting a few minutes. They bring your food outside to you, so you don't have to awkwardly stand inside and wait. I ordered the coconut horchata which I thought was solid! It was a little too sweet for my liking but I finished all of it. I ordered the asada burrito. I didn't find anything wrong with it persay, but it was just lackluster. It's all very mushy from the beans and guac and cheese, needs some texture or spice to spruce it up. This place is bomb!! Went here on a recommendation from a friend and it did not disappoint. I was in town for the LA marathon, so I skipped the hot sauces, but I did try them and omg they were so good. Everything we had was delicious. My agua de Jamaica was a little too sweet for my preference but it was still great. The agua de horchata with coco was surprisingly not too sweet and reminded me of being on the beach. We arrived and there was a line but they were fast! Waited maybe 15 min in line, I'm not sure, it was quick. Employees were great and answered our questions about the menu. Seating available inside, not much but enough, also some outside and we choose to sit outside. Grabbed a burrito and some chivichangas to go from the downtown location, which isn't too big, there's sometimes a line, but generally moves pretty quickly. Seating is very limited with a small counter and a few tables out on the sidewalk. I usually just get chivichangas (tomato, Anaheim chili, meat, cheese) but decided to try a Burrito 2.0 (meat, guacamole, beans, cheese, salsa) and it was pretty yummy. I still prefer the chivichangas though cause they're gooey, cheesy, all wrapped in a super chewy flour tortilla. I do wish it was a bit meatier. I remember seeing a photo years ago of a chivichanga from Sonoratown and it was half full of shredded beef. Unfortunately none of the ones I've gotten have had anywhere close to that. Parking can be a nightmare. First visit I think I drove around for like 25 min before finding a spot, and second time I had already parked in a paid lot and walked over from the studio I was at. read more

Incredible meats, handmade flour tortillas, and sauces. My favorite meat option to order - whether it be for tacos or burrito - is the asada. It is marinated and seasoned to absolute perfection. We love it so much, our "hack" is to order the party trays for the two of us, and absolutely gorge for the next two days. Apparently this is a regional variant of taco style from Sonora, Mexico. YUMMM. This is officially my go-to spot for Mexican food. You get your meal fast, everything is delicious, and it's affordable. You must order the Lorenza. It's a crispy fried taco layered with melted cheese, topped with your choice of meat, and finished with a variety of sauces and toppings. I chose asada and tripa, and both were incredibly flavorful. One taco alone filled me up, and I left completely satisfied. I got this sweet-empanada-styled dessert (not sure what it's called) but it was homemade & filled with a fruit paste inside. This is one of my favorite places on LA. Right next to the fashion district it's a perfect place for lunch after shopping around. It's a tiny place but has some inside bar seating and tables and a bar outside. The service is friendly and efficient despite the constant lines out the door. The food is absolutely amazing. The salsa has a great flavor and a minor kick. The chiltepin is legit, not to be taken lightly. All of the food is great but the chicken quesadillas are my favorite. Well cooked and so flavorful. This place is a little tough for gluten free people since almost all their dishes use flour tortillas. The only thing I could order was the Lorenza - Corn tortilla, Monterey Jack cheese, salsa roja, avocado salsa, cabbage. You get a choice of meats, they said the chorizo would pair best so I tried that and asada. I couldn't tell much difference between the two since the sauces and salsa made it taste the same. One of the Salsa's was very spicy so if you have any heat issues make sure to ask for on the side or not at all. I also tried the chips and guac, which were OK, the chips were too oily for me and the guac lacked flavor, I'm guessing the avocados weren't ripe. Overall it's pretty good but for the price, probably not a place I would generally frequent. The cashier was nice, didn't really interact with any other staff. They were maybe too busy because they didn't really clean any of the tables. Most of the seating is designed for small parties and not very comfortable. So more of a togo place. Most of the seating is on the sidewalk and we got a random visitor from the neighborhood. (which is the case for most places in this area that are outside). Parking can be very difficult in the nicer part of the block but if you go ... east? and park on the shadey side, no problems finding something lol. read more

This felt like a very authentic home made Mexican place! The server was helpful INT giving us her recommendations! The food was also ready in 5 minutes so this is a great place to come if you are trying to grab a quick meal. It's like Mexican fast food! We tried the chivichanga, which is just a smaller version of their burrito, with chicken and the beef head taco. Both were flavorful and delicious. The chivichnaga is not fried like a typical chimichanga, but it was still good and very cheesy. They also gave us the green and red salsa on the side. The red salsa is extremely spicy and the green one is mild. Both were delicious but you should only try the red salsa if you are okay with very spicy food. I loved their To go presentation, they put the food on a small plate and wrap it in foil. This is very unique and makes the meal easier to eat since you already have a plate handy. read more

What I Ordered: -Costilla Burrito 2.0 $12.50 -Chorizo Lorenza $5.00 -Chivi Pollo $5.50 I've wanted to visit Sonoratown for a while, but it's not often I make it over that way. I finally went out of my way to visit for a late weekday lunch, and the line was moving quickly. I knew I wanted the Burrito 2.0, but wasn't sure what to order. The staff member was very helpful and suggested the Costilla Burrito 2.0, which was one of the best burritos I've had in LA! I was going to try a taco, but I ordered a Lorenza instead, which she described as a tostada. The chorizo was good and different. She also suggested the Chivi Pollo, but I wasn't a fan. The Burrito 2.0 with grilled costilla, pinto beans, Monterey Jack cheese, and a fresh flour tortilla, served with green onions, radishes, and two excellent hot sauces, was amazing and I'll definitely order it again! Preface: My experience was 3, but I don't feel comfortable giving it a 3 when it could definitely be a 4. (explained down below) Walking in, you get a very vibrant lively store that kind of brings life to the plaza. The service is fine, and service is pretty quick. I was very excited coming here to try their burrito, which is where I get a bit conflicted. The salsa are okay, green probably having the best flavor. As for the burrito itself, the tortilla had a very nice char; however, the burrito itself was a bit lack luster. There wasn't a lot of depth of flavors you would expect from a burrito. It was just meat beans and avocado, which I got, but it's just not my thing. That being said, I had to give it a four because the meat is REALLY well seasoned and has a great Smokey flavor. Burrito was not it for me, but I could totally see it being absolutely delicious in a taco or quesadilla where the ingredients are typically simpler. Sonoratown is a "must stop" place for me whenever I'm in the area. The food here is just so good! My personal favorite is the beef chivichanga, but the chicken chivichanga is a close second by just a hair. This little burrito is so simple--it's filled with just shredded meat and cheese--but it's so comforting to eat. My favorite bite consists of a little bit of the soft handmade flour tortilla, flavorful meat, gooey cheese, topped with chiltepin salsa. The chiltepin salsa is a must. I went here a few times before and always loved it. The chivichanga was very cheesy, not too overly cheesy though, and had great filling. With both salsas, it was spectacular!! I wanted to try something new, so i got a tripa taco, extra crispy, and wow it was amazing. The crunchiness of the tripa tasted similar to a chicharron and was very flavorful. I would totally get that again, forsure. Now I'm mad because I don't know what i'd want to get next because it was so good. I also had the burrito 2.0 which did not disappoint either. If you want to try something Different, from an underrepresented area (in LA) of Mexico, this is the place. Unique menu. I'll try to break it down but all in all I feel like I was there on an off day. Really 3.5 stars. Since I am in this area of L.A often, I will definitely return and hopefully revise my starrage as needed. The menu is limited to a few meats and specialties. Steak, cabeza, chicken tinga, tripa are popular. There are burritos and tacos and quesadillas. Tortillas used are flour. I impulsively ordered the "Caramello" with steak. It comes with a grilled spring onion, radish on the side. I had to go back inside to ask for lime and salsa. The red salsa was great. The steak was tender- but if you're not a fan of very pronounced charcoal-y flavor on your meats, consider yourself warned. A creamy velveeta-esque cheese, beans and shredded lettuce inside. Not a fan of the cheese. It says it was Monterey Jack but this didn't seem like it to me. The tortilla, which has oft been touted as the best- may have been good, but I really didn't enjoy it because was not warm. When I order a quesadilla or this type of item I expect to have a griddled exterior. This dish lacked that- tortilla was extra chewy and hard to bite. It was confusing, as it was presented cut like a quesadilla, but ate more like a soft taco. Like I said, this may have been an off day. Service was very kind I like the feel of the place even though its a rough area. Sitting at the tables in the front area can be challenging, but you can call ahead and get to go or sit at one of the limited counters inside. They have ice cold bottled beers, Mexican cokes, and sodas. The staff seems to be doing the best they can - maybe they can fence in the area so passerby can't just come up behind you while you're eating. Parking is a coin toss since it's DTLA so keep your eyes peeled when you start getting close to the restaurant. Hesitated in the past because the photos on here make it look really small. But damnnnnn it's actually pretty big. And heavy! I was surprised and very happy with it. 10/10 tacos!! The tortillas are the best! I've eaten at the restaurant and also have ordered takeaway, and both experiences have been solid. A one pound family kit was perfect for 4. We got the asada and chicken. It comes with 12 tortillas (from what I remember), some grilled green onions, cut radishes, shredded cabbage, a red salsa, and a green avocado sauce (very YUM).
