Recently visited with my family and I was pleasantly surprised. I'd never been to this L.A. classic before and immediately saw what everyone was talking about. Classic L.A. Mexican restaurant with excellent food, strong margaritas and great ambience. The food was served piping hot. Delicious and fresh guac made to order. Crispy beef tacos that were delectable. We go there quite a bit. The food is wonderful, but we had the worst experience. The waiter was very overwhelmed. They were shorthanded and it just seemed like everything I ordered. They forgot I was the last one to get my drink, which was only an iced tea we had to ask four different times and then when he finally bring it, it was with attitude until we brought it to his attention and he seemed to act a little better the ambience there is fairly good being that it's a big dodger hangout especially before games and things it's always very loud. As soon as you walk in, the vibe is amazing--live music and that classic old-school Mexican restaurant atmosphere. The only thing I'd mention is that parking is in the back, but the host stand is in the front, so it felt a little awkward walking through the restaurant to check in. The margaritas were on fire--literally! One of the staff members (I wish I remembered his name--it started with a D) was super energetic and checked in on us every 30 minutes. This place has been a solid place of great memories for me. Recently visited to have a drink , a flaming margarita (the best) and we were greeted by the friendly staff. Bartender was great, I have had their food before and honestly everything has been good, from the enchilada plate, the carnitas plates, and the asada burrito. This a well known gem in Echo Park and even though I'm not always in the area, I always stop in when I am. Ambiance of this place is great for date night or drinks with some friends. Stopped in here with the Ladyfriend after making an escape from a work related get together. You know the kind, one doesn't want to appear antisocial, but you play the game and say that "We'll stop by for a little bit". Translation, stay for an hour or so then make your way to an exit. Which led us to this location. We've been to their location in Hollywood, always delicious, and the service is always excellent. Perhaps it is the Ladyfriend and her charisma? Dunno, but it was busy, but we were able to get seated fairly quickly. Charisma? Some might point to the low cut top she was wearing. If you're going to be a server, you've got to have the right attitude. Why? Because it matters. El Compadre has very good Mexican food. I've been a fan for years. Their flaming margarita never disappoints. It's a nice looking Mexican Restaurant. It's a a vibe, it's the right ambiance. But never tell a customer with a "snippy" attitude that the reason your food is cold, late, forgotten, or other, that it's not your fault and it's because you are short staffed on a Sunday night, during the holiday season and roll your eyes. No one wants to hear this. At least no one I know. My spouse gave her very specific order and word per word our server took the order. It came out and it was wrong. I sent it back because El Compadre does not give food for free. The server got bothered as if he was the one paying for it and immediately walked away from our table mumbling: I'll get the boss! With the worst attitude. Needless to say that Jessie didn't get a tip. In fact, he forgot all about us after we sent this meal back. He showed up later with boxes to go. Thank goodness for Cesar. In the food, beverage and hospitality industry; attitude matters. It makes a difference. I don't have an issue if my meal is overcooked or undercooked. Anyone can fix this. I have an issue with poor people's attitude. No one can fix this but the person it self. Will I be back? Yes, not anytime soon. Why? Because of Cesar and the flaming (literally on fire) Margaritas. We came across El Compadre during the recent World Series games near Dodger Stadium. This popular restaurant has charm and ambience that echos to something out of a vintage movie. The leather seats in the booths and the brick enclosed corner booths with the metal chandeliers are a highlight. We ordered Cadillac Margarita's, guacamole, and Steak Picado. The drinks were by far the best; powerful! The guacamole was fresh and the steak was well proportioned. Enjoy this vintage restaurant in a group or on a date night. Went to El Compadre after taking a tour of Dodgers stadium. The restaurant has an old time feel to it. The lighting was very dim and hard to see menu. But the staff was very friendly and brought our drinks along with salsa and chips right away. I ordered the "El Padrino" combo. It came with a grilled steak, crunchy beef taco, cheese enchilada, rice ,beans , and guacamole. The food was really good and recommend you stop by if you're in the area. This place is rather bizarre. I asked my friend why is the rating so low, since she said the food is pretty decent, and then I realized what the issues are. We came to the restaurant on Wednesday at exactly 9:20 PM and the lady who approached us didn't even say hi, just (kind of rude) - "Kitchen is closing in 5 minutes so order everything at once". We started laughing because the approach looked like a prank, rather than a welcome to the restaurant. And she didn't provide us with menus, just went to the back and sat down with friends or/and coworkers. Bartender also didn't pay attention that we don't have the menus until we flagged him down. He was relatively decent, at least he didn't give us an attitude. Smile here and there. He did mess up our tips and put them all on my friend's card. I guess it happens. Both my friend and I work in hospitality industry, therefore I rarely leave negative reviews (if ever), but this was just ridiculous. I understand the restaurant was closing soon, and we wouldn't stay long anyways, nor would we sit endlessly at the bar. Trust me we didn't plan on being "those" people. You guys really need to step up the game. Just because you get certain volume doesn't mean that you can treat customers crappy. We almost felt guilty for even asking for menus. Two stars just so I don't feel like a horrible person, but managers (and owners) should pay attention to this. read more

Not sure what the popular opinion is about here? Made the mistake of trying this restaurant on a Saturday evening. Food was very mediocre at best. Similar to Acapulcos or El Torito. Extremely bland boring food. The service was what you'd expect from a restaurant that caters to animated personalities. Ambiance is Dark and dingy feeling and very loud. So loud you can't even have a conversation with your table. If you're into drinking alcohol this is the place to be. The drinks are strong and plentiful. This probably works for some but not for me. Living in Los Angeles we have so many great options so try exploring outside of this area. You'll be grateful you did. read more

I stumbled across this place after the dodger game. It's super close to the stadium (about 6 mins away located on the corner). They have limited street parking but there is valet parking in the back for $5. Once I walked inside they had a band playing. The band played for about 15 - 20 minutes and then they were done. The restaurant had music playing through the speakers in the background after the band was finished. They have TV's in the bar areas so you can watch the game. We got seated right away and our waiter was very pleasant. Once we ordered we did not have a long wait for our food. They do provide chips and salads while you wait (the chips were warm and fresh and the salsa was good). I ordered the shrimp enchiladas in which I would NOT recommend. It was super watery and salty. I needed another tortilla to soak up all the watery/salty sauces on the plate. The margaritas were very good and they light them on fire once they come to the table. The shrimp quesadilla was very delicious. Overall I would recommend this place, but I would not recommend the enchiladas. read more

Usually bring my family here before a dodger game for lunch and drinks but tonight I went solo. Only three other couples at the bar. After the bartender brought me a drink, I was ignored for 30 minutes. Mr nacho bartender hung out at the opposite side of the bar flirting with the women. He visited the couple next to me five times without asking me if I wanted anything or wanted to order. 30 minutes later after the couple left he asked me if I was okay. In today's culture we call that micro season. He has a chip on his shoulders and I won't be back unless in bringing my family for a Dodger game.
