I came in here with a HUGE group of 13 people on Easter Sunday and the staff were SO accommodating to our group. I called ahead to make a reservation and the person on the phone was super kind and made sure everything was perfect. I give them 5 stars based on how accommodating this place is. The restaurant was busy but they got our orders right and drinks came out promptly--the staff was super attentive to the little order details as well. There is valet parking(which I HATE)! We had a large party and were seated right away. I had the Bob Cob salad without to tomatoes. Was looking for a place for happy hour and decided to check this place out. If you want to park in their lot, you'll have to pay for valet which I think was $10. We were able to find street parking around the corner for free without any issue. Their $6 happy hour beer was a good deal and there were a handful of food/appetizer options on the happy hour menu. The food came very quickly! Fried okra and dipping sauce had a surprisingly spicy kick to it but tasted yummy. The Brussels sprouts was more like a salad with onions, herbs, etc inside. It was actually really refreshing! The disappointing dish was the Santa Maria fries which is filled with queso, black beans, tri tip, avo salsa, and cream. Cute place for brunch. I find parking in this neighborhood to be impossible so thankfully they have valet (and Venmo!). My friends, who are much more patient, were able to find street parking. We had a reservation for as soon as they opened on a Sunday morning so we could choose our seat. There are lots of options... completely indoor, enclosed patio, fire pit! Menu offers many intriguing choices. I think I ordered wrong... my standard breakfast with eggs, bacon, potatoes (an absolute mountain of potatoes) and a biscuit subbed for toast was just all right. The biscuit definitely wasn't worth the upcharge. One friend had the shrimp and grits, which I, the only southerner in the group, didn't recognize as any shrimp and grits I've ever seen. It's just their draft beers and its one of each type (1 IPA on the menu, 1 lager on the menu, 1 amber on the menu, etc). Afterwards we ordered a burger ($10), a shrimp slider ($3), and the loaded fries ($12). The burger was simple but ok. The shrimp slider was underwhelming. It had one shrimp on a pile of coleslaw. I wouldn't recommend this. The Loaded fries were ok. I would say the burger was the best out of all three. We had another round of beer and heading into the concert. Service is great, and the beer ($6) is also a good deal. The food is ok, I don't know if I would come here for the HH food again. We shared plates including the full portion Cesar, dry rub wings and crispy okra. Overall the food was delicious and as prescribed. If you're an avid Cesar lover, this one does come with avocado. Very yummy. They are known for their BBQ, especially ribs. I will try it on the next visit. Ambiance: American menu restaurant with plenty of seating both indoor and outdoor - with a big bar! SERVICE: Tonight was Fabulous. We showed up without a reservation (and they were busy) but, they were very nice and assured us they would get us in. We only waited about 15 minutes and - sure enough....we got a great outdoor seat. Our server was nice and attentive. FOOD: Also Fab!! We tried a few things and everything tasted very good. Came by for the first time the other night for an after work dinner with a friend. Since it's Los Feliz, your parking options are either paying $10 for valet or getting lucky and finding metered street parking. We sat outside by one of the fire pits so we were nice and toasty. We also got the pulled pork sandwich, which was pretty good, but not as great as the other entrées. I will say that the prices are quite high, and I definitely wouldn't come often as it is a little bit more expensive than I feel it should be. However, the quality of the food is pretty incredible and all of the plates had so much flavor which I loved. The servers were also very attentive which we really appreciated. We ended up ending with the gooey brownie and marshmallow ice cream and all of us absolutely loved it. Overall, it was a great experience and we would definitely come back. I believe Messhall used to the be the former Brown Derby location and they've done a great job with it. This is my first time here and wanted to visit for Sunday Brunch. The menu is slim but has a lot of offerings for everyone in your party. As you can see from the photos, the portion sizes were more than expected, especially the pulled pork sandwich. We got an extra side of Carolina BBQ sauce to make it even better! The Cobb Salad with the fried chicken was more than one person to eat so we shared it among three of us. Although the hamburger was not as big as I wanted, it was still thick, juicy and flavorful. Lastly, the chilaquiles was a huge order and also shared. The service was excellent and Jack, was like our second server. Both were very knowledgeable about the menu and had some really good suggestions. The music was straight from my days of growing up in the 80's so it added to the ambiance. They have some great promotions that we will be checking out especially the lunch burger with beer for $12 and the fresh oysters for $1 until they run out. I used to like this restaurant but then I came back. The menu never changes, but the food does get worse. Over the years the service, the selection and the quality of food has decreased dramatically. My partner and I live close to here and would like to make this our local spot but each meal is more and more disappointing. Cocktails were gross. Service was lackluster but I can't be too mad because the food is bleeeeeeeeh. This time we had the pulled pork sandwich which was roughly the size of a buffalo fetus and unfortunately of a similar texture. Hubby had the Mai Tai which tasted a little bit like the back of my throat after a good week of nasal drip. With its Northwoods summer camp aesthetic and eclectic menu, Messhall is a neat place for a quality meal. We came for lunch on a weekday, and it wasn't busy at all. However, the only parking option they offered was valet, so we parked down the street for free - plenty of spaces on a weekday. We started with a couple of the movie-themed cocktails: Top Gun "Talk To Me Goose", a rum concoction topped with a cloud bubble, and Jaws "Like A Doll's Eyes", a tequila drink tinged black by squid ink. We also ordered apps, the fried okra with ranch and buttermilk biscuits with fennel butter & berry preserves. The cocktails and okra were tasty. It could be because I'm a Southerner and used to soft, dense, round-cut biscuits, but Messhall's biscuits were a bit off. Square. Dry. Mealy. For entrées, the three of us ordered the salmon, a half rack of baby back ribs, and the scallops. The scallop and rib plates were very good; the proteins were flavourful and the sides complemented perfectly. Due to my journey with the salmon - from ordering it to what I received - I must deduct one star from my review. I informed my server of my peanut allergy when I ordered. The menu's description of the salmon - the sauces and seasonings, sweet potato confit, grilled broccolini - are all fine for me; I just wanted the kitchen aware of my allergy as a cross-contamination alert. Later, the waiter came from the kitchen and said there would be a problem with my having the salmon plate, because the sauce contained butter. What??? I clarified my allergy - PEANUTS, the legume, not butter or any other dairy product - and he said he'd tell the chef. My salmon arrived seasoned and sauced with a side of sweet potato confit - on a bed of grilled-to-a-crisp brussels sprouts. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to ruin my companions' meal, but I was so disappointed. Not only do I HATE burned, bitter brussels sprouts, but the menu clearly said broccolini was the side vegetable. They chose brussels on a whim, but if they'd given me green peas, they would have had to remake the entire plate and I would have been furious. Green peas are a relative of peanuts (both legumes). Further insulting and frustrating was wondering if their stupidity about thinking I was allergic to butter caused them to change the vegetable from broccolini, which I actually would have enjoyed. Restaurants must serve what is listed on the menu. If it's something that could change frequently like a side vegetable, "daily vegetable" or "chef's choice" must be listed with the description to prompt an allergic person to ask what it is to avoid being served a deadly allergen. read more

Unfortunately, the food here did not match the aesthetics of the exterior and interior of the restaurant. The look is very nice and inviting from the street! We had a perfect sized long table for our family get together so it's a good place to go for larger parties. Our group ordered one of the meat platters as well as individual dinners and sides. Nothing on the meat platter tasted good to me. The flavors, spices, bbq sauce all of it...yuck. Could not eat it. However, the sides...mac and cheese, Caesar salad and fries were good. Sorry this review is for mainly food than service.... It was our first time stepping in after driving by it for years. All my friends would rave about the food and happy hour specials here. But everything was either super salty or dry. Chicken wings were beyond dry to the point of calling it jerky. The buffalo sauce was extremly salty. We also got a dozen oysters...Worst mistake ever, first oyster tasted super salty. I rinsed every single oyster with water and tried again. More salt....Used an entire cup of water to thoroughly wash them and tried 5 more times each one tasting like I bit into a ball of salt, imagine drinking salt water or scooping a cup of salt into your mouth intentionally. I left the staff know and he just said they are shucked fresh. That's fine, but that doesn't solve the salt issue. I asked if they brined them in salt because I couldn't think of anything else to explain why they tasted how they did. He didn't seem to care, he didn't even offer to comp the ones untouched or give the kitchen a heads up. The biscuits which I read about to be good were dry.....like eating a spoonful of flour dry. Sorry I'm not trying to exaggerate but that is literally what all of these tasted like..... The burger was decent, a little salty but not overwhelming. Brussels sprouts however were a solid 9/10. I'm not sure if I would come back honestly between how disappointed I was and the lack of care the staff had about our concerns to even want to address it or make it right. I wasn't looking to be comped but there wasn't even a let me let the kitchen staff know about your concerns.
