Messhall has a large dining area right on los Felix Boulevard and the menu offers a lot of interesting items, including gluten-free. There's also a wonderful picture of a hero and mentor who taught me a lot about food, Anthony Bourdain. My friend and I split a half dozen raw oysters with Mignonette, lemon and cocktail sauce. The oysters were fresh and went down with all the fixins real easy. I ordered the HAMACHI CRUDO- mango gazpacho, crispy onions, yuzu kosho, salsa macha, cucumber, avocado. Very light and refreshing on a very warm afternoon. My friend she ordered The Bob Cobb with chicken. Came here for the $1 oyster deal on Tuesdays, that starts at 6 PM. They ran out of oysters by around 7:30 to 8 PM, so I would definitely come early. The sides are pretty small for their price. The Crudo only had a few pieces of fish. The biscuits were good, buttery. Happy hour ends at 6 PM, so you could come earlier to get some drinks and then start the oysters at 6 PM. The mai tai was not very accurate, didn't really taste like a true mai tai. Unfortunately, the steak frites was a bit of a disappointment - chewy and not as flavorful. They were also only $25 so still a good deal even though they weren't fantastic. The cabin-like décor is anything but campy at Messhall. The thematic notes throughout the restaurant are embedded in the details, from the plates to the decor on the wall, the bathroom doors, and some of the menu items too. It's the perfect place to get your buzz on before you get yourself to The Greek. Or simply grab some bites and connect with friends in a casual setting. Personally, I choose to sit at the bar, but there are communal tables and more intimate booths, as well as patio seating with the massively tall, old, and iconic everygreen trees along Los Feliz Blvd. to further set the tone. I've been coming here for years just for the oysters. I'm a glutton for those shucked delicacies and Messhall does it up right for a great price during happy hour. On Tuesdays, they're $1 each and Wednesday Happy Hour prices are $2/oyster. They're always fresh and served with mignotte sauce (shallots + red wine vinaigrette). I like to pair my oysters with a martini so I often opt for the Gin Gimlet ($10) because crazy people love their gin. Or if you can take advantage of their Mini 'Tini ($6), then do so. Again, I go for a Gin Mini 'Tini because well, crazy people love gin. However, Vodka is another option for these adorable mini drinks for lightweights like moi. For the carnivorous souls, the Backyard Burger looks filling enough and there's a Hangar Steak with Frites (aka fries) that looks amazing and you can get that for $20 during Wednesday nights, which isn't bad these days for a solid piece of moo. The "Blackened Shrimp Slider" on the HH Menu isn't bad for $3. So if you're jonesing for a cabin-like vibe with a modern twist, Messhall is a good stomping ground for locals, and bar service is always on point. *** FUN FACT: Speaking of those evergreen trees just out front. They're often confused for pine trees, but they're actually "Cedar Deodora Trees" that were planted in the 1920s. They're like a century old now, which further adds to the charm of this area. The Instagram promo got to me, and I made the trek out to Los Feliz because I had to find out what their new Wednesday special was all about! They are currently doing "Mid-Week Sip & Sizzle" which includes $20 steak frites and $6 martinis. I went back to check the Instagram ad which just said "$6 martinis" but then you see the menu in person which says "$6 MINI martinis".... Still fun but a very different fun than regular martinis. The benefit of the mini martinis is you can basically built a flight because they are so tiny, and they have multiple flavors available. In the end, I had 3 different mini martinis which comes out to roughly $18 and roughly the size of 1 regular martini. So it's not really a savings, just a fun way to switch it up. The steak frites was decent, but certainly not the best steak I've had in LA. It's more about the fun vibes. We sat outside at the fire pit (which is communal seating) and enjoyed our steak frites, martinis, and Chesapeake Bay oysters! Was looking for a place for happy hour and decided to check this place out. If you want to park in their lot, you'll have to pay for valet which I think was $10. We were able to find street parking around the corner for free without any issue. Their $6 happy hour beer was a good deal and there were a handful of food/appetizer options on the happy hour menu. The food came very quickly! Fried okra and dipping sauce had a surprisingly spicy kick to it but tasted yummy. The Brussels sprouts was more like a salad with onions, herbs, etc inside. It was actually really refreshing! The disappointing dish was the Santa Maria fries which is filled with queso, black beans, tri tip, avo salsa, and cream. Cute place for brunch. I find parking in this neighborhood to be impossible so thankfully they have valet (and Venmo!). My friends, who are much more patient, were able to find street parking. We had a reservation for as soon as they opened on a Sunday morning so we could choose our seat. There are lots of options... completely indoor, enclosed patio, fire pit! Menu offers many intriguing choices. I think I ordered wrong... my standard breakfast with eggs, bacon, potatoes (an absolute mountain of potatoes) and a biscuit subbed for toast was just all right. The biscuit definitely wasn't worth the upcharge. One friend had the shrimp and grits, which I, the only southerner in the group, didn't recognize as any shrimp and grits I've ever seen. But he enjoyed it. Another friend had the Chilaquiles and also enjoyed her meal. We shared the seasonal crisp (blackberry) and that was quite good. There is valet parking(which I HATE)! We had a large party and were seated right away. I had the Bob Cob salad without to tomatoes. I was a bit hesitant being that it had vinaigrette dressing instead of blue cheese. But it was DEE-LISH! MANY of my friends othered the loaded fries(not sure what they're called). I called ahead to make a reservation and the person on the phone was super kind and made sure everything was perfect. I give them 5 stars based on how accommodating this place is. Came here for the Happy Hour before a concert at the Greek Theater. Prices have gone up a bit but still wanted to check out the HH menu. We were greeted and seated right away. It wasn't busy so they came right away to take our order. We ordered a few beers. I like that they do have decent beer on the menu, although not a big selection. It's just their draft beers and its one of each type (1 IPA on the menu, 1 lager on the menu, 1 amber on the menu, etc). Afterwards we ordered a burger ($10), a shrimp slider ($3), and the loaded fries ($12). The burger was simple but ok. The shrimp slider was underwhelming. It had one shrimp on a pile of coleslaw. I wouldn't recommend this. The Loaded fries were ok. I would say the burger was the best out of all three. We had another round of beer and heading into the concert. Service is great, and the beer ($6) is also a good deal. The food is ok, I don't know if I would come here for the HH food again. We shared plates including the full portion Cesar, dry rub wings and crispy okra. Overall the food was delicious and as prescribed. If you're an avid Cesar lover, this one does come with avocado. Very yummy. They are known for their BBQ, especially ribs. I will try it on the next visit. Ambiance: American menu restaurant with plenty of seating both indoor and outdoor - with a big bar! SERVICE: Tonight was Fabulous. We showed up without a reservation (and they were busy) but, they were very nice and assured us they would get us in. We only waited about 15 minutes and - sure enough....we got a great outdoor seat. Came by for the first time the other night for an after work dinner with a friend. Since it's Los Feliz, your parking options are either paying $10 for valet or getting lucky and finding metered street parking. We sat outside by one of the fire pits so we were nice and toasty. Also delicious, but very heavy...I was falling asleep as soon as I got home lol. All and all I did enjoy my experience at Messhall, but I will say that it was a bit on the pricier side. I used to like this restaurant but then I came back. The menu never changes, but the food does get worse. Over the years the service, the selection and the quality of food has decreased dramatically. My partner and I live close to here and would like to make this our local spot but each meal is more and more disappointing. Cocktails were gross. Service was lackluster but I can't be too mad because the food is bleeeeeeeeh. This time we had the pulled pork sandwich which was roughly the size of a buffalo fetus and unfortunately of a similar texture. Hubby had the Mai Tai which tasted a little bit like the back of my throat after a good week of nasal drip.
