We came around dinner time on a Friday, and it was good we came at 6 because it got busy around 7. The menu is massive, so we struggled with choosing what to order. We ended up going with the mapo tofu, tea smoked ribs, and the shrimp in garlic. We got our food promptly. We started with the mapo tofu, which was our favorite. The tofu was soft and velvety, and the sauce had strong rich flavors, in addition to the nice numbing spice. We then tried the ribs but were disappointed; being relatively expensive, we had hoped for the ribs to be more tender, moist and flavorful. But they were extremely dry and bland. The shrimp in garlic came in a bowl, and was soupier than we anticipated. The flavor was fine, but overall we were not overly impressed with the dish. If we were to come again we would probably only come for the mapo tofu. That being said, the restaurant is pretty expensive for what we expected (we paid over $100 for 3 dishes), so we might not come again.

Neat setting, good food, friendly staff, and excellent service. The only thing is the restaurant is small, and the waiting can be long. Will repeat.

I've been wanting to try this place for a while now. I wanted to try the Alhambra location (the OG) but opted for this one because it's closer to me and they took reservations. Made reservations for a chilly February evening at 7:30 pm during Dine LA week. The parking lot was valet at this time but we were able to find street parking. Meters ended at 8 pm. The restaurant is on the left of the plaza up the stairs. They had a decently sized area inside and patio seating. Inside was loud because of a large UCLA event happening so we opted to sit outside since they had every one of their heaters on. There were so many Chinese people which I was pleased with. The woman who sat us just gave us her ordering tablet so we were able to choose and walked away. That didn't allow me to ask questions but I knew what most things were and double checked images on Yelp. Maybe they'd help you if you clearly were not Chinese or if the restaurant isn't too busy. The Dine LA Menu included 5 courses and each course you could choose from a variety of 4-5 options. The price was $78 and stated it would feed 3-4 people. For my boyfriend and I, I chose the Couple's Sliced Beef in Chili Sauce, Street Corner Potato Strips (Spicy), Toothpick Lamb (Spicy), Boiled Fish with Rattan Pepper (Mild Spicy on accident), and Impressive Cold Noodle. The food was ready within 10 minutes and came out all at once! Honestly, everything was delicious and full of flavor. The sliced beef is served cold on a bed of green onion, cilantro, and celery with an oily sauce. This was delicious. The Chinese celery really made the dish, adding a pungent taste, while the rest of the greens and peanuts added crunchy texture. I was a bit disappointed by the potato strips. I thought they would be really crispy but they had no crunch and were pretty soft, like potato smileys. The flavor was good and the quantity was a lot but I wouldn't get it again unless other people wanted it. The toothpick lamb was delicious and more crispy than expected. While a bit tough on the outside, it was super juicy and bouncy inside. There was a strong cumin flavor which was so yummy! This was my second favorite dish of the night. I accidentally ordered the boiled fish mild but it turned out okay because everything else was spicy and this was a good break for my boyfriend. However, it was still very numbing. This was my favorite dish overall and would get it every time. The broth was so delicious, I couldn't stop sipping it even though my mouth was so tingly! There was so much super tender fish. My boyfriend is a big fan of Sichuan cold noodles so this was his favorite overall. I also enjoyed it a lot. Vinegary and spicy, it really hit the spot. An outstanding experience and exceeded my expectations. I will definitely be coming again and bringing my family or anyone who enjoys spicy food. There was a good variety of cold and hot items and a good range of spice. Personally, I would only come during cooler times or else I'd be pretty sweaty! Maybe this can be offset with more cold dishes lol. Highly recommend.

My friends and I visited Sichuan Impression on Chinese New Year and were impressed by the food and quality of service! When we got there, the restaurant was booked full, but they opened up the outdoor seating section and brought out heaters to accommodate more guests. Since it had just stopped raining, the staff wiped all of the tables and chairs for us. Food wise, everything tasted great, but portion sizes were on the small side. My favorite dishes were the Toothpick Lamb/Mutton and Chicken in Chili Oil appetizer. Overall, great experience and would visit again!

You can't go wrong with a $78 meal for 3 people during dineLA. Everything was delicious and big. Service was fast and easy. I just ordered on the phone. I also paid on the phone. They filled up water quickly too

Came here for a family dinner on a very last minute reservation and they were able to fortunately able to accommodate us. They seated us in a room separated by sliding doors so it gave a little sense of privacy which was a great bonus. Hats off to their superb service. The staff were very helpful with navigating through the various menu items which is available to order via QR code or the tablet provided. As for the food, there were some delicious items coming out of that kitchen. The highlights were the BBQ duck and Tea Smoked Ribs with their very tender and juicy cuts of meat. Delicious. The other items were very solid as well. The Mapo Tofu, Beef with Scallions, Garlic String Beans, Home-style Fried Rice and Impressive Dumplings were also winners for the night. All so tasty with the savoriness (with some balanced with spicy or sweet depending on the dish) that's expected with this cuisine. This place is located on the second floor in a plaza with not too many parking spaces but there are available street parking nearby.

The Stir-Fried Chili Pork Trotters and "Qiaojiao" Beef Combo Soup from Leshan are both great. The combination of fresh green peppers, dried chilies, and toasted sesame created a spicy kick with just the right amount of Sichuan flavor. The Qiaojiao Beef Combo Soup Leshan had a combination of sliced beef, tripe, tendon, and radish with light broth balanced the spicy pork trotters. The parking lot is small with limited spots.

I really love Sichuan food because I like the mala/numbing flavors, and this place did not disappoint! We got the: Impressive Cold Noodles Home Style Fried Rice with Beef Mapo Tofu Boiled Fish Filets with Rattan Pepper Tea Smoked Pork Ribs Fried Rice Cake with Brown Sugar School Yard Ice Jelly Honestly every dish we got was really tasty! Everything was flavorful and was well balanced, especially the boiled fish filets, fried rice, and tea smoked pork ribs which were my favorite! The Mapo tofu had a good flavor but was just a bit too salty for my liking. I want to come back to try more of their spicier foods, since nothing was really THAT spicy in my opinion which was a tad disappointing. It's a great spot for Chinese food, and especially if you haven't tried Sichuan cuisine! Highly recommend stopping by!

Came here with a large group of friends after an event since someone in the group recommended it. The restaurant is on the second floor and has a pretty standard setup and ambience. Fortunately, they had two large tables available that could accommodate our group of over fifteen people, which was a nice surprise given how last-minute our visit was. Service was decent overall. Nothing stood out, but the staff managed our big group well and kept things organized. The food did take a while to come out, but that's understandable considering how many of us were ordering at once. I ordered the beef soup with no spice (forgot the exact name), and it was good -- flavorful and hearty without being overwhelming. Everyone at the table seemed to enjoy what they got, and the portions were fair for the price. Overall, a solid experience. Nothing particularly exceptional, but also nothing to complain about. A good spot for sharing dishes with a group, especially if you're into Sichuan-style food and don't mind a bit of a wait when it's busy.

    Chicken fried rice
    Ria R.

Food is great, staff seems nice. The seated me by the window right away, which I loved. The restaurant seems clean, but you Oder on an iPad, so very low touch customer service. I also never got a refill on my water while there. They were still kind and helpful when I called them over, just not super attentive by the way it is setup. Order: Boiled Fish with Rattan Pepper, Chicken Fried Rice and Sweet Potato Ball with Taro. The fried rice was...stellar . I am a fried rice type of person...and this ranks with some of the best fried rice I've had. It is definitely on the oily side and the salty side, which I don't mind in my Chinese food. Highly recommend. Now, about their most popular dish. Gosh, I like boiled fish, but it was waaaaay to spicy for me. And I asked for "less spice". You have to love spice to handle this. I get jalapeños in my nachos, that is about my personal spice tolerance. This was uncomfortable for me. The fish was tender and good, just could not get past the heat. I recommend the other boiled fish dishes if you are in the mood. They have one called refreshing fish, which has pumpkin in it. The dish I wish I ordered instead of the spicy boiled fish, is the Toothpick Lamb. I will be back to try this...with another order of fried rice Lastly, the sweet potato ball was very interesting. Tasty, crispy outside and soft inside. Sweet, Not too sweet. The taro filling texture was like softer mochi, with a slightly grainier finish...like red bean paste. I would order again, but only in a group. I did t want more than 1 and the order comes with 5.

What We Ordered: -Mama's Handmade Noodle $15.99 -Fish Fillet with Pickled Vegetable Soup (Mild Spicy) $25.99 -3 Steamed Rice $6.00 Our little one was playing at Aidan's Place at Westwood Recreation Center. My wife was "hangry" and needed to eat quickly. She craved Chinese food, but I had my doubts about West LA's offerings compared to the SGV. We decided to try Sichuan Impression. We arrived towards the end of lunch service. The Mama's Homemade Noodle was okay for our child, nothing special. However, the Fish Fillet with Pickled Vegetable Soup (Mild Spicy) was a winner! It had a nice level of spice without being too much, and the fish was flaky and delicious. I highly recommend this dish. The service was a bit slow, and we had to ask for water refills. Overall, we wouldn't rush back, but we'd definitely return if we're in the Westside and craving spicy fish.

Couple's Sliced Beef in Chili Sauce, Stir-Fried Lamb with Cumin
    Edward W.

Food: 4.3/5 Ambiance: 4.6/5 Value 4.3/5 A nice spacious restaurant that offers comfortable seating arrangements for groups large and small. They only offer valet parking but there's definitely opportunity for free street parking nearby, which is what we did. For 2 people, we got the Couple's Sliced Beef in Chili Sauce, Stir-Fried Lamb with Cumin, and stir-fried string beans. All of these dishes were yummy but I do wish they made some small changes to make them better The string beans were unfortunately quite salty, but lightly fried well. It had to be paired with rice or was not quite edible. I wish the stir-fried lamb with cumin actually had cumin that was more prominent like the toothpick lamb does. However, I appreciated how much meat there was for the portion. The sliced beef was great! Would love the opportunity to get half the portion for half the cost but alas, now I'm just being picky. If you're looking for Sichuan food on the west side, this is a great option. Of course, I don't think it's quite comparable to the SGV, but for those who live closer to this, it's a great second option.

Spicy beef rice noodles. Flavor was one dimensional.
    Lily Z.

I agree with Mina K. I have dined at Sichuan Impression before and this time it was disappointing. We order boiled fish with rattan peppers and spicy beef rice noodle. Both dishes were very numbing and one dimensional. In fact, the soup base for both dishes were exactly the same. I didn't taste the complexity and layered flavors of Sichuan cuisine.

Ask the Community - Sichuan Impression

Do they take reservations for dinner?

    Are they dog friendly?

I believe dogs go on the porch and service dogs can go inside. But correct me if I'm wrong

Do they have Mao Xue Wang?

    What's the health score?

    Hi, it’s A.

Do they have an elevator access?

Yes from plaza has an elevator to the second floor

Do they have any beer there?

Yes, there is a cooler inside the door as you enter with the usual Asian beer suspects. They may encourage you to have a beer as you wait for a take out order or a table.

Can they comfortably seat 8 people OUTDOORS?

Yes, although as I recall it would be tight.

Is there a lot of added sugar?

What type of fish is in the boiled fish rattan?

I had the fish with chili oil. They used tilapia- I think they probably use the same low grade tasteless fish in the rattan dish- ask before ordering.

    Do they use MSG?

Whether they do or don't it doesn't matter. Check the ingredients on your bag of doritos next time

What is the parking situation in terms of valet parking and what side streets are good for parking? I know parking is tight there in that neighborhood.

Hmm I actually disagree with the previous answer. There is a parking lot out front with maybe 15 spots - I've always been able to find a spot on the weekend. Otherwise, the side streets tend to be free-ish on a weekend! Maybe no spots on streets…

Is there a lunch special menu?

    Do they use MSG?

MSG is not any more a harmful substance than salt or another additives. Please look up the history of how MSG in Chinese food got put into a bad light.

What vegan or no dairy or non animal options do they have?

    Vegetable stir fry

Do they have a range of Vegetarian choices?

No only a few vegetarian dishes.

    Do they take reservations?

No they do not . But you can be on the wait list through Yelp . Go on the list before you get there & then you don't have to wait to long when you arrive !

Are they on any food delivery apps (even for pick up only)?

I see them on my postmates app right now and they have the official partner checkmark

What kind of fish is used in the boiled fish in chili sauce?

Swai fish, or Pangasianodon hypophthalmus. Related to catfish they are usually farmed in Vietnam.

    Does this location serve alcohol?

    Yes, they do

    Do they do take out?

As of Dec 1st, not during the weekend but yes on the weekdays

We'd been talking about getting Chinese food, and he picked Xiang La Hui, his go-to spot for classic Sichuan. I'd never been before, and was more than happy to try a new spot in the SGV. We met up at noon and stayed until the restaurant wrapped up lunch service and gently pushed us out the door, sometime around 2:30. The space was nice, instantly recognizable as a Chinese restaurant in Alhambra. It was pretty quiet the whole time, a good place for a leisurely catch-up. Service was fast and polite, though the combination of QR code ordering and poor Verizon service was a bummer. I had to cross the dining room to take down the wifi password posted on the opposite wall. We ordered a sizable spread for two people: Chong Qing fried chicken, dan dan noodles, wontons with chili oil, and pea tips with garlic. Everything was delicious, most of all the Chong Qing fried chicken, crispy nibbly bits of breaded chicken stir-fried with green onion and hot pepper. I love dan dan noodles and wontons, and thought both were great, if not the best I've had in the area. The pea tips were lovely, bright green and not spicy, but abundantly flavorful. I'd love to come back to Xiang La Hui and try more of the menu. It seems like a restaurant that does everything well, and I'll keep it in mind whenever I'm craving Sichuan.

This place is an institution. After I wrote that sentence, I felt like I was trite. And like I said…read moresomething but not really. Like, one time I was watching Project Runway, a season finale episode, where the designers make their own creations, and do not have to make their ensembles from shredded newspaper or bird seeds or pinata remnants. And after a so-and-so of the fashion industry said, "I wanted to go and rip that jacket off the model." This other time, I saw a poster for a coming musical and it said, "stop everything you are doing, and go this musical now" says this important person in the theathre world. What am I am trying to say is that the comment I wanted to do this immediately or drop everything and do this immediately is so overwrought and widely used that it lost all meaning. Kind of like calling this place an institution. So I will call this place what I should to not be drown in my own trite. One time I went to this place and I went cause I was invited to a birthday party. And it was a large group of people. Me and a friend debated if Penny, from the Big Bang, had eaten at this place. She was also in Charmed--- it is a household name, I can't remember it. So this place is famous enough to be a go to move, and it has many pictures of celebrities that have gone there. The food is also super good, so this place, like I said is an insititution. When I went there a second time, I was more aware of the place I was visiting and kind of was ready to receive its Chinese fare with an unhinged jaw. I was dining with a friend, the same friend that I had the is that Penny from Big Bang debate? It was not. She eventually one. But like she and I ate here again, without knowing we were going to the same place. I would say its a small world but.... She and I ate with gusto. It does not take a lot to know that the speciality of the house is their slippery shrimp. They also have slippery chicken and slippery tofu. Super good, sweet, sour but it was not sweet and sour sauce shrimp, it had differences. I am not sure what. There were some heat notes but not like terrible heat. So I am not exactly sure what this place does to make their slippery sauce but let us just that it was delicious and different than other Chinese food sauces. Ronnie and I had the works. Rice, Beef with Brocoli, Pan fried dumplings, and dumpings. It was the type of Chinese food that was so good a coke was needed to balance the decadent saltiness of the fare. Yeah, that might not make sense but I wrote what I wrote. We had eniugh food to share between the two of us. It was that type of meal, where leftovers were welcomed and made sense. They were not left over, they were left untouched because it would be a shame to not enjoy them later. The service was great. The place felt traditional, and like it took you to an alley in China to eat a grandmother's food who knows how to use a Wok and pinch dumplings so they stay close for good. I saw this bad review that skewered this place. And I am like wow! How can we be so different. Not like Ying and Yang Different, more like flutter and flatten. But taste is subjective, so decide for yourself if this place is a peacock worthy of its feathers or a tiger with its claws clipped.

We ordered the combination fried rice, Mongolian beef, slippery shrimp, beef lo mein, mixed veggies and Szechuan chicken. Everything was delicious and super flavorful! It took a while for our server to attend to us once we were seated (we waited about 10min before we asked to have our order taken) but after that the servers were very attentive. The place is busy. Quick turn around. One bathroom for the entire restaurant so expect a line. I saw a sign out front for valet parking but I didn't see anyone. But there's plenty of parking places nearby. Found a place down the street for $8 all day parking.

I ordered Mike's Spicy Beef Noodle Soup (I asked for it non-spicy for myself), and my friend had the regular Beef Noodle Soup. The soups were very, very good, and the beef was tender and well marbled, lending a subtle richness to every bite. The noodles had a satisfying chew--slightly springy with a bit of bite that held up well in the flavorful broth without turning mushy. The broth itself was savory with a balanced chili kick that lingered pleasantly. I also tried the Szechuan Salad. The numb, tingling bite from the Sichuan flavors was pleasantly surprising. Will definitely be back!

Street parking in front or nearby. Pleasantly surprising. Beef noodle soup - this was my favorite thing we tried. Comforting numbing spice & the beef is braised well. I wish there was a deeper beef broth flavor though, as it's written over by the spice. Dan dan noodle - plain dan dan noodles. They're good, but I wish they were spicier and used more qq fresh noodles. Sesame noodles - too sweet for me. Not the biggest fan Mapo tofu - wish this was spicier (both spice & numbing).

We got the Boiled Fish in Green Pepper Sauce, Toothpick Lamb, and Mapo Tofu. Everything was definitely super delicious. The dishes weren't too spicy for me, and I actually wish they had a bit more heat, but they did have a nice numbing kick to them. I do have a pretty high spice tolerance, though, so my experience may be different from others. My friend thought the dishes were pretty spicy, so keep that in mind if you're more sensitive to heat. The fish was super tender and soft, and honestly pretty addictive to eat. The Toothpick Lamb was pretty much the same--you just pop one in your mouth and then immediately want another. It had a nice salty, spicy flavor that made it really easy to keep eating. The only downside is, well, the toothpicks! They definitely slow you down. I also really enjoyed the Mapo Tofu. It was nice and flavorful and went really well with the other dishes. Overall, everything we tried was really good, and I can definitely see why my friends recommended this place.

They definitely know how to get people seated and keep the crowd moving in, but getting out was another story. Kept getting passed up when we were done and simply trying to leave. The food did take a while, but I can understand that when everything is being made fresh. Just know that if you're on a time crunch, this probably isn't the place for a quick meal. The gentleman who seated us and took our order was really nice, but after that, we pretty much felt forgotten about. Once the food arrived though, it was Good. Very flavorful, authentic Chinese food, and definitely worth trying. The atmosphere is loud and busy, no music, just the sound of a completely packed restaurant, so don't come expecting a quiet, relaxing dinner. Also, fair warning, some of these dishes are Spicy, and I mean actually spicy. If you love some heat, you'll probably love this place. Overall, I'd recommend giving it a try for the food. Lots of dishes to choose from. A good variety too of proteins, vegetables, noodles and Wonton soup.

The way it's set up is pretty cultural. It reminds me of some hole-in-the-wall Asian restaurant the way they have metal utensils at each table. It's almost like a self-serve system to certain tools which is pretty common. I haven't drank water out of metal cup in a long time, so that was nostalgic too. We tried a variety of dishes to get a fuller understanding of their menu of what this place has to offer. I was really looking forward to the beef roll because it's usually one of my favorite dishes, but this one was disappointing. I define a good beef roll as one that's a good mix of sweet, savory and refreshing. The meat makes it savory and the veggies are supposed to counter it make the whole dish feel light. If someone disagrees with me, please share your thoughts on what a beef roll should taste like. The one from Pine & Crane was drenched in sauce. I could not taste the meat or the veggies and the whole thing tasted like a stick of sugar. The mapo tofu was on point, but this is quality you can probably make at home. The flavor profile was very similar to that of stuff you'd get a grocery store. The three cup jidori chicken came recommended, so we tried it. The flavor is very pungent and goes well with rice. The braised pork in brown sauce was rich, tender, and melted in my mouth. My favorite of the meal was definitely the garlic vermicelli shrimp. The Kung Pao chicken was tender, and a good balance of savory, sweet, and tang. The restaurant isn't that big but it does have tables suitable for larger groups. This is a decent spot for lunch. The space feels worn -- menus tattered, décor dated, the whole interior overdue for a refresh. For a restaurant positioning itself at the higher end of Chinese dining, Meizhou Dongpo is sleeping on the finer details. No complimentary tea service, and rather than offering a pot for the table, they serve individual tea by the mug -- a comically oversized Western mug at that. Chopsticks arrive without spoons, and when you ask for one, you get silverware instead of the porcelain you'd expect at Chinese restaurant. The Peking duck accoutrements came with a little plastic spoon on the tray. Small things, but they add up.The fried rice was a letdown too and looked nothing like the menu photo. The service is consistently great... attentive, efficient, and genuinely welcoming. Fair warning for anyone new to Sichuan cuisine, the dominant flavor is "spicy". That said, the dishes are not just about heat... they're layered, aromatic, and incredibly well-balanced. Every dish I've tried has been outstanding, both in flavor and presentation. If you're a fan of bold, authentic flavors and reliable service, this spot is definitely worth visiting. Tip - If you're new to the cuisine, I strongly recommend getting everything MILD spicy. I've been told by some of my colleagues that MILD spicy is still pretty spicy, so be warned. With that said, strongly recommend the dishes below. Lamb with Cumin 11/10 - My favorite dish here by far. Aromatic, flavorful, and the spices are just on point. Dan Dan Noodles 9/10 - Solid and consistently good. The sauce is properly seasoned and truly compliments the perfectly cooked noodles. Shredded Cabbage with Pork 9/10 - Not to be confused with twice cooked pork. This dish is so simple and bland looking, but it's packed with flavor... so good! Garlic Pork Belly 8/10 - This is a cold dish. The meat was perfectly cooked and properly coated in chili oil. Solid and consistently good. Kung Pao Chicken 8/10 - In my opinion, it's an elevated Kung Pao Chicken. Solid and consistently good.
