Boil Fish Fillet Chili Sauce and Ma-po Tofu

My friends and I visited Sichuan Impression on Chinese New Year and were impressed by the food and quality of service! When we got there, the restaurant was booked full, but they opened up the outdoor seating section and brought out heaters to accommodate more guests. Since it had just stopped raining, the staff wiped all of the tables and chairs for us. Food wise, everything tasted great, but portion sizes were on the small side. My favorite dishes were the Toothpick Lamb/Mutton and Chicken in Chili Oil appetizer. Overall, great experience and would visit again!

I've been wanting to try this place for a while now. I wanted to try the Alhambra location (the OG) but opted for this one because it's closer to me and they took reservations. Made reservations for a chilly February evening at 7:30 pm during Dine LA week. The parking lot was valet at this time but we were able to find street parking. Meters ended at 8 pm. The restaurant is on the left of the plaza up the stairs. They had a decently sized area inside and patio seating. Inside was loud because of a large UCLA event happening so we opted to sit outside since they had every one of their heaters on. There were so many Chinese people which I was pleased with. The woman who sat us just gave us her ordering tablet so we were able to choose and walked away. That didn't allow me to ask questions but I knew what most things were and double checked images on Yelp. Maybe they'd help you if you clearly were not Chinese or if the restaurant isn't too busy. The Dine LA Menu included 5 courses and each course you could choose from a variety of 4-5 options. The price was $78 and stated it would feed 3-4 people. For my boyfriend and I, I chose the Couple's Sliced Beef in Chili Sauce, Street Corner Potato Strips (Spicy), Toothpick Lamb (Spicy), Boiled Fish with Rattan Pepper (Mild Spicy on accident), and Impressive Cold Noodle. The food was ready within 10 minutes and came out all at once! Honestly, everything was delicious and full of flavor. The sliced beef is served cold on a bed of green onion, cilantro, and celery with an oily sauce. This was delicious. The Chinese celery really made the dish, adding a pungent taste, while the rest of the greens and peanuts added crunchy texture. I was a bit disappointed by the potato strips. I thought they would be really crispy but they had no crunch and were pretty soft, like potato smileys. The flavor was good and the quantity was a lot but I wouldn't get it again unless other people wanted it. The toothpick lamb was delicious and more crispy than expected. While a bit tough on the outside, it was super juicy and bouncy inside. There was a strong cumin flavor which was so yummy! This was my second favorite dish of the night. I accidentally ordered the boiled fish mild but it turned out okay because everything else was spicy and this was a good break for my boyfriend. However, it was still very numbing. This was my favorite dish overall and would get it every time. The broth was so delicious, I couldn't stop sipping it even though my mouth was so tingly! There was so much super tender fish. My boyfriend is a big fan of Sichuan cold noodles so this was his favorite overall. I also enjoyed it a lot. Vinegary and spicy, it really hit the spot. An outstanding experience and exceeded my expectations. I will definitely be coming again and bringing my family or anyone who enjoys spicy food. There was a good variety of cold and hot items and a good range of spice. Personally, I would only come during cooler times or else I'd be pretty sweaty! Maybe this can be offset with more cold dishes lol. Highly recommend.

You can't go wrong with a $78 meal for 3 people during dineLA. Everything was delicious and big. Service was fast and easy. I just ordered on the phone. I also paid on the phone. They filled up water quickly too

Came here for a family dinner on a very last minute reservation and they were able to fortunately able to accommodate us. They seated us in a room separated by sliding doors so it gave a little sense of privacy which was a great bonus. Hats off to their superb service. The staff were very helpful with navigating through the various menu items which is available to order via QR code or the tablet provided. As for the food, there were some delicious items coming out of that kitchen. The highlights were the BBQ duck and Tea Smoked Ribs with their very tender and juicy cuts of meat. Delicious. The other items were very solid as well. The Mapo Tofu, Beef with Scallions, Garlic String Beans, Home-style Fried Rice and Impressive Dumplings were also winners for the night. All so tasty with the savoriness (with some balanced with spicy or sweet depending on the dish) that's expected with this cuisine. This place is located on the second floor in a plaza with not too many parking spaces but there are available street parking nearby.

I really love Sichuan food because I like the mala/numbing flavors, and this place did not disappoint! We got the: Impressive Cold Noodles Home Style Fried Rice with Beef Mapo Tofu Boiled Fish Filets with Rattan Pepper Tea Smoked Pork Ribs Fried Rice Cake with Brown Sugar School Yard Ice Jelly Honestly every dish we got was really tasty! Everything was flavorful and was well balanced, especially the boiled fish filets, fried rice, and tea smoked pork ribs which were my favorite! The Mapo tofu had a good flavor but was just a bit too salty for my liking. I want to come back to try more of their spicier foods, since nothing was really THAT spicy in my opinion which was a tad disappointing. It's a great spot for Chinese food, and especially if you haven't tried Sichuan cuisine! Highly recommend stopping by!

Came here with a large group of friends after an event since someone in the group recommended it. The restaurant is on the second floor and has a pretty standard setup and ambience. Fortunately, they had two large tables available that could accommodate our group of over fifteen people, which was a nice surprise given how last-minute our visit was. Service was decent overall. Nothing stood out, but the staff managed our big group well and kept things organized. The food did take a while to come out, but that's understandable considering how many of us were ordering at once. I ordered the beef soup with no spice (forgot the exact name), and it was good -- flavorful and hearty without being overwhelming. Everyone at the table seemed to enjoy what they got, and the portions were fair for the price. Overall, a solid experience. Nothing particularly exceptional, but also nothing to complain about. A good spot for sharing dishes with a group, especially if you're into Sichuan-style food and don't mind a bit of a wait when it's busy.

Food is great, staff seems nice. The seated me by the window right away, which I loved. The restaurant seems clean, but you Oder on an iPad, so very low touch customer service. I also never got a refill on my water while there. They were still kind and helpful when I called them over, just not super attentive by the way it is setup. Order: Boiled Fish with Rattan Pepper, Chicken Fried Rice and Sweet Potato Ball with Taro. The fried rice was...stellar . I am a fried rice type of person...and this ranks with some of the best fried rice I've had. It is definitely on the oily side and the salty side, which I don't mind in my Chinese food. Highly recommend. Now, about their most popular dish. Gosh, I like boiled fish, but it was waaaaay to spicy for me. And I asked for "less spice". You have to love spice to handle this. I get jalapeños in my nachos, that is about my personal spice tolerance. This was uncomfortable for me. The fish was tender and good, just could not get past the heat. I recommend the other boiled fish dishes if you are in the mood. They have one called refreshing fish, which has pumpkin in it. The dish I wish I ordered instead of the spicy boiled fish, is the Toothpick Lamb. I will be back to try this...with another order of fried rice Lastly, the sweet potato ball was very interesting. Tasty, crispy outside and soft inside. Sweet, Not too sweet. The taro filling texture was like softer mochi, with a slightly grainier finish...like red bean paste. I would order again, but only in a group. I did t want more than 1 and the order comes with 5.

What We Ordered: -Mama's Handmade Noodle $15.99 -Fish Fillet with Pickled Vegetable Soup (Mild Spicy) $25.99 -3 Steamed Rice $6.00 Our little one was playing at Aidan's Place at Westwood Recreation Center. My wife was "hangry" and needed to eat quickly. She craved Chinese food, but I had my doubts about West LA's offerings compared to the SGV. We decided to try Sichuan Impression. We arrived towards the end of lunch service. The Mama's Homemade Noodle was okay for our child, nothing special. However, the Fish Fillet with Pickled Vegetable Soup (Mild Spicy) was a winner! It had a nice level of spice without being too much, and the fish was flaky and delicious. I highly recommend this dish. The service was a bit slow, and we had to ask for water refills. Overall, we wouldn't rush back, but we'd definitely return if we're in the Westside and craving spicy fish.

Couple's Sliced Beef in Chili Sauce, Stir-Fried Lamb with Cumin
    Edward W.

Food: 4.3/5 Ambiance: 4.6/5 Value 4.3/5 A nice spacious restaurant that offers comfortable seating arrangements for groups large and small. They only offer valet parking but there's definitely opportunity for free street parking nearby, which is what we did. For 2 people, we got the Couple's Sliced Beef in Chili Sauce, Stir-Fried Lamb with Cumin, and stir-fried string beans. All of these dishes were yummy but I do wish they made some small changes to make them better The string beans were unfortunately quite salty, but lightly fried well. It had to be paired with rice or was not quite edible. I wish the stir-fried lamb with cumin actually had cumin that was more prominent like the toothpick lamb does. However, I appreciated how much meat there was for the portion. The sliced beef was great! Would love the opportunity to get half the portion for half the cost but alas, now I'm just being picky. If you're looking for Sichuan food on the west side, this is a great option. Of course, I don't think it's quite comparable to the SGV, but for those who live closer to this, it's a great second option.

Spicy beef rice noodles. Flavor was one dimensional.
    Lily Z.

I agree with Mina K. I have dined at Sichuan Impression before and this time it was disappointing. We order boiled fish with rattan peppers and spicy beef rice noodle. Both dishes were very numbing and one dimensional. In fact, the soup base for both dishes were exactly the same. I didn't taste the complexity and layered flavors of Sichuan cuisine.

Was billed twice from the tablet. Confusing. Food good. Service bad.

Bottom line : fantastic Kung pao chicken -- probably the best . Horrible service. The server didn't care one iota about me. Lunch special is missing :( The Kung pao chicken's sauce is finger licking good . It's not the coagulated like any of the more casual/fast food option, but has an insanely good flavorful gravy. For the price -- $19.99 and no lunch special, I was however expecting a moderately bigger portion size. For those who enjoy the thrill of spice, I'd highly recommend you go 'mild.' It's spicy as is. You're gonna have to have a much larger tolerance for 'spicy' as its level of spice is relatively way above the spicy level which I'm accustomed to at other restaurants ! The service was absolute trash. Waiter mandated I order via a tablet similar to a kiosk at a grocery store. When checking out , it automatically bumped up the bill by adding rice which I didnt want. Upon editing my order , at checkout it bumped my Kung pao chicken up to 2x. A bit confusing. Server didn't check up on me one at any time during my visit. Since the food is spicy, I was expecting my water glass to be refilled appropriately . At the very least, the server could have provided me a bottle to self-serve. However that was too much to ask. 3/5

A bright spacious spot on second floor of the plaza. Great experience, plenty of parking in the plaza (although it's not always free it seems). Service was great. Food was mostly on point, but felt a bit pricey. Recommended: toothpick mutton, kung pao chicken. Kids loved the wontons too. Minus one star for the value and somewhat slow serving of the dishes despite few tables.

This place is always incredible!! The food is excellent, and the service is always fast and professional. I always order the boiled beef noodle soup as a staple, but then will mix many other items as well. One of my favorite restaurants in LA!

Twice cooked pork with pork pieces stuck together. Did they even bother to stir fry? No flavor :(

    Hi, it’s A.

Do they have an elevator access?

Yes from plaza has an elevator to the second floor

Do they have any beer there?

Yes, there is a cooler inside the door as you enter with the usual Asian beer suspects. They may encourage you to have a beer as you wait for a take out order or a table.

Can they comfortably seat 8 people OUTDOORS?

Yes, although as I recall it would be tight.

Is there a lot of added sugar?

What type of fish is in the boiled fish rattan?

I had the fish with chili oil. They used tilapia- I think they probably use the same low grade tasteless fish in the rattan dish- ask before ordering.

Whether they do or don't it doesn't matter. Check the ingredients on your bag of doritos next time

What is the parking situation in terms of valet parking and what side streets are good for parking? I know parking is tight there in that neighborhood.

Hmm I actually disagree with the previous answer. There is a parking lot out front with maybe 15 spots - I've always been able to find a spot on the weekend. Otherwise, the side streets tend to be free-ish on a weekend! Maybe no spots on streets… Read more

We've been at their location in Tustin and I heard this one was better than that location I was really excited about it. Teson is really good too, so I had a pretty good expectation on this location. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated by the staff member and she was pretty efficient and on top of things. I have attached here, but the ambience is pretty lively, but also not too loud. It was an enjoyable experience where you can talk with each other and be able to hear one another. At the same time, they had a clean and classy decor to their interior design. We ordered the stirfry lamb with cumin, shredded potato, and the chili oil fish fillet. The Lamb - 5/5 was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a very nice heat to it. Be careful because this is not for those sensitive to spicy food, but if you do like spicy, this has such a nice kick to it. The shredded potato - 5/5 one of my favorite dishes to substitute for the rice. Don't be deceived by how it looks. It definitely has a kick and can numb your mouth; however, you can still taste the pickled flavor in each bite. The chilli oil fish - 5/5 one of my most favorite dishes from both locations. Although the spiciest of the dishes, you taste the flavor through each bite. The dish is perfectly cooked and just dissolves in your mouth. Overall I am extremely satisfied with our visit and recommend coming here if you're ever in the area!!

The squid tentacles were tiny, and the dish felt like it was mostly filled with mixed vegetables. For $25.99, it definitely felt a little like a rip-off. On the brighter side, the Tea Smoked Pork Rib was really good--super flavorful and probably my favorite dish of the meal. That said, most of the menu is on the pricier side, and the portions aren't very generous, so value-wise it's a bit questionable. Service was just okay. No one really checked in on us, and we had to wave our hands a few times to get attention when we needed something. Overall, solid flavors in some dishes, but the portion size and pricing hold it back from being a full 5 stars.

This place is not for the faint of heart, if you're afraid of spicy food. However, if you're adventurous and like a little kick to your dishes , this is the place to be. I did ask for my kung pao chicken to be less spicy, but I ordered the Dan Dan noodles to be regular spicy, and it was quite delicious. The noodles had the requisite springiness in its bite. The Jamaican lady sitting at the next tables shared a spicy Tin Foil pork rib with me, it was also delicious. She also recommended the Happy Chicken dish. Finding out the best dishes is easy, if you manage to talk to the regular customers. Generally, it's really hard to find people like me who occasionally like to adventure out for spicy food, but this place hits the spot when you have a dried chili craving. It's a good restaurant to bring your good friends, there are several large round tables available, several rectangular tables with booth seats or chairs, and the portions are very good for sharing. There is parking lot located at the back of the restaurant, and also some limited street parking. In the dining area, there's a mounted television showing you the chefs who are cooking Szechuan dishes, twirling around the red dried chilis in the wok pan, dishing out the food, and you see people enjoying and eating the food, great entertainment if you're eating by yourself. We had two orders of slippery shrimp, kung pao chicken, eggplants with hot and spicy garlic sauce, juicy steamed dumplings, and pork fried rice. Overall, both restaurants in Chinatown and Pasadena provide great food quality. The ambience was cozy with dim lighting. Our round table had a wooden rotating tray. They have pictures of celebrities and politicians who've visited their restaurant. Service was relatively quick, but there was a 20-minute wait for the dumplings. Valet parking can get difficult when the lot gets full. A few cars entering the narrow driveway had to reverse out of the way to let others leave. The kung pao chicken was very tasty with a good amount of spice. I noticed that the slippery shrimp didn't taste as spicy as the portion from Pasadena. Reviews say that the spice is adjustable. Regardless. it tasted great as it came right off the pan. The pork fried rice was delicious with a savory flavor that didn't seem overpowering. I thought the juicy steamed dumplings were the weakest dish out of our whole order. There wasn't enough flavor and heat from the broth. I didn't try much of the eggplants, but they tasted adequate for me.

The chicken breast is not only perfectly crunchy and seasoned but it is way bigger than the bun. I joke saying that the bun is a handle for the chicken breast. The spices go great with the sweet Asian slaw. The fries are also very good- perfect crisp. The spot is small. There is only a counter on the wall to eat. There's some vague post saying something to the effect of: great news, they aren't closing and are opening a new location! Is this instead of the Silver Lake one? In addition to? It takes literally less than a minute for the business owner to change Google business hours to CLOSED--I do this for my workplace--which is significantly less than what potential customers spend driving here. Another guy and his family might've come up from Riverside to a closed door. Hopefully they actually live here and weren't in LA just for this!

So off we went, trying to get there on the early side, as it's small (25 seats) and we'd heard it can fill up quickly. We arrived somewhere around 5:45 and were one of only two tables, but maybe a half-hour later it was completely full. The staff is super friendly, the ambiance is cozy and clean, and I like that the spice levels can be adjusted. We opted for the cucumber salad, dan dan noodles, dumplings in chili oil and the mapo tofu (which my friend wanted to try, since he hadn't yet). Food came out quickly, and while I realize that's not uncommon, I wouldn't have minded just a little more spacing. Still, it wasn't so quick to be a problem. My favorite items were the dan dan noodles, which were addictively delicious, and the dumplings in chili oil, which are longer and flatter than some and more flavorful than most. The cucumber salad was also excellent and a nice palate cleanser between other items. I was probably a little less enamored of the mapo tofu. It was good but not quite at the level of the other dishes for me. I still remember the mapo tofu served at the late, great Ricebox in DTLA, and theirs had much more flavor punch. But all in all, Mala Class was excellent, and I'd be happy to return to try more of the menu (and maybe repeat a few faves!).

Parking was pretty chill at that time (snagged a street parking spot in front) and there was no wait. The dan dan noodles had a nice chew to them and the flavoring had the perfect hint of spice against the peanut sauce. The wings were a little too overseasoned -- we had to shake off all of the peppercorn on the top and it was still pretty salty and peppery (but not THAT spicy). They were perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, though. The dumplings and chili oil were probably my favorite bite. They're like wontons except they didn't do the last fold, and the sauce they are in is very well-balanced with a strong hit of acid against sweetness. The mapo tofu needed some sugar to bring out the flavor of all of the spices because otherwise it felt like there was no real flavor, where there were a million spices working against each other. I would definitely pass on this one but everything else was pretty good. The interior is very classically Highland Park-esque and our server was super nice! I would come back to try other dishes.

Customer Service: (5/5) The waiter was very nice throughout. She was very endearing as she talked to my girlfriend in chinese and also kind to me when speaking in english. When asked about dishes and proportions, she was very knowledgeable and honest. Food: (4.5/5) We ordered the Mapo Tofu and Meizhou Special Fried Rice with chicken. The food came out within 10 minutes and the portions, as I saw on previous reviews, were generous enough for us to share and be full. The Mapo Tofu came out on a hot ceramic bowl. It wasn't as spicy as I thought, not overly spicy but just enough where you get that numbing kind of sensation in your mouth that leaves you wanting more. The beef wasn't like the ground beef you see in other mapo tofu, but more of chunkier pieces which I wasn't a big fan of as it didn't seem spread evenly. The Meizhou Special Fried Rice with chicken was probably one of the best fried rice dishes I've ever had. You can tell it was made from a wok and the flavors were just incredible. The chicken seemed to have been friend separately and added on top afterwards but the saltiness of the chicken didn't take away from the fried rice at all. Instead, it added to the flavor and made it all so enjoyable. For the ultimate experience, I'd recommend eating both together to maximize your palette!

The space feels worn -- menus tattered, décor dated, the whole interior overdue for a refresh. For a restaurant positioning itself at the higher end of Chinese dining, Meizhou Dongpo is sleeping on the finer details. No complimentary tea service, and rather than offering a pot for the table, they serve individual tea by the mug -- a comically oversized Western mug at that. Chopsticks arrive without spoons, and when you ask for one, you get silverware instead of the porcelain you'd expect at Chinese restaurant. The Peking duck accoutrements came with a little plastic spoon on the tray. Small things, but they add up.The fried rice was a letdown too and looked nothing like the menu photo. Spots like Din Tai Fung and Lunasia Signature are operating at a different level and the gap shows. Meizhou Dongpo has the bones of a great Chinese restaurant. The duck alone proves it. But until they invest in the experience around the food, it's hard to recommend at this price point.

The service is consistently great... attentive, efficient, and genuinely welcoming. Fair warning for anyone new to Sichuan cuisine, the dominant flavor is "spicy". That said, the dishes are not just about heat... they're layered, aromatic, and incredibly well-balanced. Every dish I've tried has been outstanding, both in flavor and presentation. If you're a fan of bold, authentic flavors and reliable service, this spot is definitely worth visiting. Tip - If you're new to the cuisine, I strongly recommend getting everything MILD spicy. I've been told by some of my colleagues that MILD spicy is still pretty spicy, so be warned. With that said, strongly recommend the dishes below. Lamb with Cumin 11/10 - My favorite dish here by far. Aromatic, flavorful, and the spices are just on point. Dan Dan Noodles 9/10 - Solid and consistently good. The sauce is properly seasoned and truly compliments the perfectly cooked noodles. Shredded Cabbage with Pork 9/10 - Not to be confused with twice cooked pork. This dish is so simple and bland looking, but it's packed with flavor... so good! Garlic Pork Belly 8/10 - This is a cold dish. The meat was perfectly cooked and properly coated in chili oil. Solid and consistently good. Kung Pao Chicken 8/10 - In my opinion, it's an elevated Kung Pao Chicken. Solid and consistently good.
