Flaming Pork Jowl
Shirley W.

Always wanted to try this place out! Despite the name, they actually have a good amount of non-spicy dishes here to offer. We first started off with ordering A-Choy, Tea Smoked Pork Rib, and the flaming pork jowl. The choy came out first, which even though it's a super simple dish, it was quite tasty! The Tea Smoked Pork Rib was also pretty good, it falls off the bone! It has a prominent smoky flavor to it, which was pretty nice. We also got the pork jowl which was pretty unique. We didn't know how 'fancy' the dish was lol but they also poured alcohol over it over hot stones, and you eat it with lettuce and garnishes for a refreshing bite. All of the dishes were pretty good. Service was pretty standard. It wasn't too busy so it was pretty quick for us to receive our food. There wasn't that many people either so we were seated quickly. It does feel more of a modern Chinese restaurant, which the dishes were also more nicely presented. Although, the price point feels kinda expensive for what it is lol. I wouldn't say the ribs would be $30 worth given the portion size either, nor the pork jowl. It feels more like an elevated experience with the ambiance and presentation, but the food is just 'good'.

Portions here are big. Everything tastes great. My favorite was the pig trotters, pork spare ribs, and the fried intestine. The bamboo, beef noodle soup, smoked duck were all really good. Service was good very attentive. I love the mala spice. The restaurant is very clean and modern looking. HAPPY MALA SPICING!!

The food is very good and made with quality ingredients. I wish I knew how they smoke the poutry and pork meats, as it is always perfectly smoked. The wonton soups and dumplings were tasty and filling. I was cautious about the spicy foods but found they do have mild foods too. If you have a sweet tooth, they also have an Ube custard like dessert which the kids really liked. Although the location is small, the food quality is excellent along with the respectable service.

During our trip to LA, I was looking forward to great eats in the SGV area. I've been wanting to have Sichuan Impression again since having it at the Tustin location a few years ago. We were surprised and pleased to see that the location has been Michelin recommended two times! We ordered the maocai, chongqing chicken/laziji, and cold noodles. Everything hit the spot and satisfied my cravings. I think my only complaints was the maocai was a bit too oily...and I wish the food was a tad bit spicier and numbing because the Tustin location didn't seem to shy away from spice. :) I do love how their teas and drinks come in a huge, tall glass mug and is worth the money! The waiters were super friendly and checked in with us often.

Wow! Just WOW! =] I can see why this place is so popular. The flavors for every dish HITTTTTT!! I don't know about the other dishes, but what we ordered from the DineLA Menu was AMAZzinggg! lol The tea smoked ribs were tender. It didn't fall off the bone, but it was good. If only it was a bit more juicy, it would have been a 10/10 lol My fav was definitely the wontons in chili oil. Omg, I could eat 10 of it hahha it was that good!! The garlic flavor really hit the spot.. Not the biggest fan of the bean jelly cold noodle, but it was not bad at all. The couple's sliced beef in chili sauce was my 2nd fav. Each slice of beef was soft and packed with flavor. It had a good amount of spice that gives you a little kick. Wok-fried Cauliflower w/crispy pork lard was a hit at the table. Everybody loved it. We found ourselves wanting more and more of it. I also had a coupon for a complimentary sweet potato balls. It was delicious. I can eat a bunch of these too. Luckily, we arrived early for dinner. When we were halfway eating, the line was crazy. Sichuan Impression really left a good IMPRESSION... $72 DineLA was definitely worth it. It was family style...so the $72 set was for a party of 3-4. My friend thought it was $72 pp...lol she was surprised. Service was alright Nice restaurant =]

Michelin guide recommended, but my experience fell flat. We went on a Saturday evening for dinner. They have underground parking but we found street parking a few blocks away. The place was packed and there was a decent wait list. Luckily, we were seated at a table fairly quickly. Ordering is automated via QR code, so there was minimal interaction with the staff. The food came out quickly. We ordered tea smoked pork ribs, boiled fish with rattan pepper, A choy, and mini lamb skewers. Food was cooked decently but most dishes needed more flavor. The pork fell off the bone easily but tasted bland. The fish was tender but I could not drink the broth due to intensity of peppercorns. This is not probably not a fault of the chef, but it just irritates my throat. The lamb was a bit dry and had minimal spice (coming from a guy who doesn't tolerate spice). The dish had almost as many peppers as meat. Unfortunately, the vegetables outshined all the proteins, which says something... I wanted to really like this place and would be open to trying it again. At least I left with a full stomach.

Pork jowl

Came here with a group of friends for DineLA last month and it was such a great experience from start to finish. For the set menu, we chose the original kung pao chicken, wontons in chili oil, mini lamb skewers, tea smoked pork ribs, and the impressive cold noodles. We also added the flaming pork jowl. For dessert, we ordered the purple rice mochi taro ball, which was really good, and they even gave us a fried taro ball after we sent them an IG DM. Nice little bonus. Every single dish was amazing and the presentation honestly felt Michelin level. You can tell they really care about how the food looks and tastes. Our favorite was the tea smoked pork ribs. The flavor was deep and smoky, and the meat was tender. The kung pao chicken was a pleasant surprise. It was not your typical overly sweet takeout version. This one felt elevated and balanced. The cold noodles were also so good, super flavorful and refreshing. The flaming pork jowl wrapped in perilla leaves and dipped in their house sauce was next level. The ambiance is modern and gives off high end vibes. Service was amazing across the board. All the servers were attentive and professional, and the whole experience almost felt like fine dining because everyone was so on point. Noise level was low, so we had no problem having a normal conversation. Parking was easy for us on a weekday lunch. They have their own parking garage and there is also free street parking nearby. I can see weekends being more challenging though. Definitely coming back to try more of their dishes. This spot really impressed us.

Sweet Potato Ball with Taro香芋红薯丸(5pieces)

Came to this place for lunch after church and it is a nice and cozy place.. The restaurant is clean and not too loud. The service was good but had to wait on the food but that just means it's made fresh and made to order. The parking structure was pretty empty and got parking easy. We got the pork ribs that were 10/10 . Then yuxiang shrimp 20/10 . The kung pao chicken was too sweet for my taste but not bad 7/10 and the mapo tofu was alright 5/10. Prices are not bad and quality is good and you get a good amount for the price. The dessert sweet potato taro balls. 10/10. Overall good place and would come back again.

Steamed Pork Ribs with Rice Flour 粉蒸排骨 $16

The $72 five course at sichuan impression Alhambra is still my top choice among all the dinela deals because the taste is up there along with value. Got the following: Steamed Pork Ribs with Rice Flour 粉蒸排骨 $16 - tender meat Tender Bamboo Shoots in Chili Sauce 红油笋尖 $12 - actually tender, no old stringy bamboo mixed in Wonton In Chili Oil 红油抄手 $13.50 - Not spicy, in fact a little sweet Mini Lamb Skewers 竹签羊肉 $22 - still a fav dish here. Would rec to try! Tea Smoked Pork Rib 七里香酥骨 $30 - I liked it but mostly bc I like ribs in general. I think the flavor is a bit lighter. I prefer dry over saucy ribs so it worked out. Overall, I'd be down to eat all of the above again. My favs here are still the mini lamb skewers and mushroom chicken soup and rice! Protip: We redeemed the FREE sweet potato taro balls ($5 value). Anyone can get it by dm'ing the restaurant on insta or wechat

Came here for the Dine LA deal and it was great way to taste their dishes for a good value! Elevated Chinese restaurant with unique dishes. 5 dishes for $72 and they have 3 add on dishes. Joined on Yelp waitlist to avoid long wait. Service was friendly. We added the flaming pork jowl add on for $30 and it came with a show! They grinded fresh litsea root which smelled amazing. Lit up a fire show for the dish. Marinated perfectly with tender meat wrapped in fresh veggies. My other favorite was the tea smoked pork rib. Super tender and falls off the bone. Light tea flavor and had aromatics of garlic and scallions. The kung pao chicken was also tasty and slightly different from traditional flavors. The impressive cold noodles. Had a tasty Sichuan taste to it. Sauce similar to the chili wonton. The wonton was more on the pork flavor side. The stir fried ribeye was tender but standard dish. Looks like they extended their Dine LA deal. They have garage parking.

My family and I went to Sichuan Impression on Christmas Eve, and it was packed! On the way to the restaurant, the Yelp waitlist said it was about a 20 minute wait, so I signed up and put that I'd arrive in 20 minutes. The wait time was a bit inaccurate, because once we arrived at the restaurant, we had to wait an additional hour outside. Although the wait time was inaccurate, the food was great! Sichuan restaurants are always a favorite of mine when in LA! My favorite dishes were the pork kidney as well as the Sliced Beef appetizer. The service was good, and the food came out very quickly. If you're looking for some good Sichuan food, I would recommend this spot; just be sure to sign up for the waitlist!

ORIGINAL Kung - Pao Chicken宫保鸡丁
Maria L.

I came here for Dine LA. They offer 5 different dishes for $72. It's enough to feed 4 people. From the Dine LA menu, I ordered the following: 1) Kung pao chicken, original not spicy version (4/5). I don't eat spicy food so I ordered the original version. It does come with spicy pepper but if you don't eat the pepper, it is not spicy. 2) Fried rice (4/5). This was good. Solid fried rice. 3) Cold noodle (5/5). I asked for the sauce on the side so I can control the spicy level. It was just right for me by tossing the sauce with the noodles myself. 4) Tea smoked ribs (3/5). The ribs were a bit dry. The flavor was overpowered by the smoke. It tasted smokey. 5) Angus beef with onions and green onions (3/5). Although the beef was tender, it lacks flavors. It comes with lots of onions and green onions. Service was good. Server was friendly and efficient. The food came out quickly. This restaurant specializes in spicy food. Since I don't eat spicy food, selections are somewhat limited. If you are a fan of spicy food, I would recommend this place.

Mapo Tofu
Anita M.

This was my second visit at this location and the service + flavors were all on point. For reference, I live in Orange County - so I do frequent the Tustin location a lot more. Our party was greeted and seated right away, which is always a plus. You have the option to order with a server or scan the QR code at your table and order directly from your phone. Bonus: If you order from your phone, you can accumulate points towards your next visit at this location only. Ok, onto the food: Sliced Beef with Chili Sauce: This was good - except my family loves spicy food and we felt it wasn't spicy enough, so we asked the server to bring out more chili oil. Otherwise, this classic dish is always a favorite of ours. Mapo Tofu with minced Pork: Made with just the right amount of spice, and just a hint of that numbing Sichuan Peppercorn. Paired very well with rice; delicious. Spicy Fried Intestines: My personal favorite, and the intestines were fried to perfection. The spice on this dish was just right as well - and we devoured this dish. Spicy Boiled Beef: This dish was very good as well, perfect amount of spice. Loaded with veggies too. String Beans: This dish was seasoned well and the string beans had good texture as well. A nice veggie dish to help balance out the meal with so many meat dishes. Overall, if I'm visiting family in Alhambra and surrounding areas - I will always suggest Sichuan Impression. Have been visiting the Tustin location for years now and I'm happy to support their other locations as well. If you like spicy food, give this place a shot!

Since I no longer truly reside in the 626 on a permanent basis, my search for new Asian restaurants…read moreputs me in many areas to find the latest delicious food venues, and Xiang La Hui is one of them. This place is not for the faint of heart, if you're afraid of spicy food. However, if you're adventurous and like a little kick to your dishes , this is the place to be. I did ask for my kung pao chicken to be less spicy, but I ordered the Dan Dan noodles to be regular spicy, and it was quite delicious. The noodles had the requisite springiness in its bite. The Jamaican lady sitting at the next tables shared a spicy Tin Foil pork rib with me, it was also delicious. She also recommended the Happy Chicken dish. Finding out the best dishes is easy, if you manage to talk to the regular customers. Generally, it's really hard to find people like me who occasionally like to adventure out for spicy food, but this place hits the spot when you have a dried chili craving. It's a good restaurant to bring your good friends, there are several large round tables available, several rectangular tables with booth seats or chairs, and the portions are very good for sharing. There is parking lot located at the back of the restaurant, and also some limited street parking. In the dining area, there's a mounted television showing you the chefs who are cooking Szechuan dishes, twirling around the red dried chilis in the wok pan, dishing out the food, and you see people enjoying and eating the food, great entertainment if you're eating by yourself. Do check out this restaurant when a craving for delicious spicy food comes upon you, this place won't disappoint you!

A Rare Gem of Authentic Sichuan Cuisine Yesterday, I…read morediscovered a hidden gem: Chuan Wa Zi (川娃子)!Szechuan Delicious! Every single dish I tasted--from the authenticity of the flavors to the freshness of the ingredients and the precision of the wok heat (huohuo)--absolutely blew me away. Usually, entering a Sichuan restaurant means being blasted by "spicy, spicy, spicy" and "numbing, numbing, numbing," with choices limited to just water-boiled, sour soup, or mala flavors. However, the chef at Chuan Wa Zi uses only the freshest ingredients to create dishes that are pure and original. My friends were all full of praise! The Highlights of the Meal * Morel Mushroom & Chicken Consommé: Served in a double-boiled stew pot, the unique sweetness of the morels combined with the delicate fragrance of the chicken was so addictive I couldn't stop at just one bowl. * Braised Lamb with Radish: This featured skin-on young lamb--tender and perfectly cooked yet retaining a delightful chew. The radish was braised until deeply flavorful, and the cilantro garnish was the perfect touch, elevating the aroma without overpowering the richness of the lamb. There was zero gamey smell. Eating the lamb skin provided a boost of collagen--a truly nourishing and warming dish. * Chengdu Baby Cabbage (Er Cai): Stir-fried in a rich broth, it was incredibly sweet with a hint of bitterness that perfectly balanced the richness of the lamb. According to traditional wisdom, "five flavors nourish the five organs." Sichuan's baby cabbage is only in season for one month during spring. It's known to clear "heart fire," refresh the mind, and improve sleep. * Sautéed Pork with Celtuce (Lettuce Stem): The pork was incredibly silky and tender, achieved not through baking soda or heavy starch, but purely through masterly knife work and heat control. Paired with the crisp celtuce, it was a perfect harmony of "silky" and "crunchy." * Sichuan Jelly Noodles (Liangfen): Added at the last minute, Jing (host of Oushang Beauty Spa) claimed these are the most authentic and smooth jelly noodles in Greater Los Angeles. Made purely from mung bean starch with no additives, the texture was clean and soft. The seasoning was light and balanced--just a simple blend of soy sauce, sesame oil, vinegar, chili oil, garlic, and cilantro. From start to finish, there was no overwhelming spiciness or discomfort--just a comforting and refreshing dining experience that leaves you wanting more. House-Made Specialties It's worth mentioning that the owner personally prepares all the cold appetizers, such as the Smoked Pressed Duck and the platter of Handmade Sausages, Cured Pork (Larou), Cured Ribs, and Spicy Pork Head Meat. They were fragrant and meaty without any of the oily aftertaste often found in over-dried meats. We saw many people calling in to order these platters to go as snacks for drinks (xiajiu), and we definitely plan to do the same next time! Chef's Recommendations & Hidden Menu They offer a variety of other specialties like Pork Tripe in Golden Soup, Spicy Eel with Glass Noodles, and Basu "Glutton" Bullfrog. Some dishes, like our Lamb and Chicken Soup, must be pre-ordered by phone. Their classic Sichuan stir-fries--Flash-fried Kidney, Mao Xue Wang, Laziji (Chili Chicken), and Twice-cooked Pork--are all spectacular. They even serve Xian Shao Bai (Savory Steamed Pork Belly), a nearly lost classic that requires incredible knife skills and offers a perfect balance of sweet and savory. A Sweet Ending To wrap up, the owner's wife treated us to their Handmade Fermented Rice Soup (Laozao) with four-colored mini tangyuan (glutinous rice balls). Each color had a different natural flavor--sour fruit, rich sesame, and red bean--with no artificial coloring. The soup had a delicate fermented aroma and silky egg drops, providing a perfect ending to our feast. Closing Thoughts It has been a long time since I've had food this authentic that wasn't "scary spicy." I am truly grateful to find a restaurant that treats cooking as an art and operates with such a strong conscience and craftsmanship.
