    Fried popcorn chicken
    Victoria S.

Authentic Taiwanese food, quick service, small restaurant with limited indoor seating. We waited 20min for a Sunday lunch with a party of 3. The spinach was fresh, the pickled cucumbers were crunchy & refreshing. The turkey rice was flavorful, the fried pork chop was good but the fried popcorn chicken was even better. We will return to try more items on the menu.

The authentic taste of Taiwanese food! Diced pork belly rice and ground pork noodle are must try!

I used to frequent this Taiwanese restaurant when it first opened, but then I forgot to go because of many new restaurants come out. One day, I suddenly have a craving for Taiwanese food, so I went back and found that their food hadn't changed at all. They taste still the same. The braised rice with pork and soy sauce It really is their signature dish, super delicious. Every single Taiwanese dish is incredibly authentic. Highly recommended! The service was excellent, the staff were friendly, the place was clean, and parking was okay, not too difficult.

This restaurant is quite small, so definitely have someone in your party come first so they can put their name on the wait list! The food was delicious, my table tried the fried pork intestine, pickled cucumber, popcorn chicken, oyster pancake, oyster vermicelli, and pork belly rice. The pickled cucumbers were very good, and the portion was huge for the price! The bowl was completely filled up to the brim (I know it doesn't look like it in my photo but that's because we had already eaten half haha), 9/10. This was my first time trying fried pork intestines and it was a good experience. The intestines were crunchy on one side and soft and fatty on the other. They didn't have much taste other than straight fat, but it did come with salt and pepper to dip in. It also came with a side of pickled vegetables that were perfect to cut through the fattiness of the intestines, 8/10. The popcorn chicken was good as well. They weren't super fried, but the insides were very juicy. And dipping salt that came with the chicken was a bit sweet which I liked as well, 7/10. The oyster pancake was basically a big egg pancake made with rice flour, oysters, and this bitter green vegetable that I can't remember the name of, covered in this sweet and sour sauce that tasted tomatoey. I've never had anything like it, but it was very good! I loved the little pockets of sticky rice flour, 7/10. The pork belly rice was your standard rice that every Taiwanese restaurant serves. I only ate a few bite of my friends, but it was good! 7/10. The oyster vermicelli was also very delicious. The soup was thick like egg drop soup, and the oysters were big. Ask for black vinegar on the side if you like it a bit sour! 8/10. Great food and fast service. The portion sizes were also a lot bigger than expected! Would definitely come again.

If you like Pine & Crane or Joy, give this place a try. It's cheaper and the dishes are considered more "ethnic" There's not much Taiwanese food locations left in the center of San Gabriel, most are East of Rosemead Blvd (Arcadia, Monrovia, etc.) or Rowland Heights area. This place tastes good; pretty standard traditional Taiwanese fare with a limited but solid menu. The oyster omelette tastes pretty good. The glutinous rice flour batter is present throughout, with a solid oyster taste. The batter can be thick/congealed in certain part of the omelette though, so it's not mixed super well. I do like the tong ho or chrysanthemum greens at the bottom versus traditional a-choy (that lettuce texture is whatever imo). The sauce isn't too sweet or in-your-face strong, which gives the whole thing a nice balance. For $13.50, I'd recommend. Popcorn chicken imo has the right amount of marinade. Most boba shops soak them chickens in too strong of a soy sauce (looking at you OG Kikkoman) ginger/garlic marinade that takes away from the juicy chicken taste. This doesn't taste like fried teriyaki chicken. I really like the dipping five spice powder they use, it has a uniquely strong cinnamon/clove taste that I haven't had elsewhere. Clean oil taste with great basil aroma. I'd recommend this for sure. The pork intestines vermicelli tastes good, but not as flavorful as I like it. It has the right thickness in soup and noodle texture (strongest point), but the soup lacks umami that I'm used to. They don't put much intestines (seriously, less than a standard street tripa taco) and cilantro. This soup is best with thick chunks of chewy intestines, but they give chopped up small pieces. At the price of $9.25, go for the oyster vermicelli for a dollar more. It's a traditional Taiwanese taste, portions are on the smaller side, but service is good and food is not oily. Give it a try. I will be back for their shrimp and ground pork noodle.

Typical Taiwanese Chinese foods included fried intestines, oysters noodles, eggs pancake with seafoods, good pork chops... Tasty n delicious very attractive presentation for street foods Taiwanese!! Everything tastes so flavor and don't feel too oily, very tasteful..!!! Golden Leaf is a small street foods shop and only open for 5 days per week!! I think the whole menu is simple n tasty for all items!!!

Golden Leaf in San Gabriel has been serving authentic Taiwanese comfort food long before many of us settled in Southern California. They are located at a small strip mall storefront on West Las Tunas Drive, it has quietly built a loyal following with authentic Taiwanese 小吃 dishes. For years, their fried stinky tofu was a signature item offered openly on the menu. When available, its exterior is golden crispiness, while the interior remained soft and moisture, perfectly infused with pickled cabbage and sweet soy sauce. Every bite delivered layered flavor that lingered. Unfortunately, after the pandemic, neighborhood complaints about its distinctive odor prompted city warnings, and the tofu was moved to a secret menu, and they send email alerts to customers when it's available, and on my recent visit, the owner hinted that this might be the last day they serve it, and shared a petition link urging the city to preserve the dish. Their squid noodle/vermicelli soup, consistently delivers a satisfying shacha flavor. The diced pork belly rice and braised pork belly rice are meaty and savored, with a gentle sweetness rather than overwhelming saltiness. If you are in the mood for something lighter, the turkey rice offers a more delicate but well seasoned alternative. The poached squid showcases fresh, tender squid paired with Taiwanese dipping sauce and thin slices of ginger, a clean, bright starter that highlights the ingredient's texture. Their fried crispy pork intestine remains a favorite for its crunchy and flavor, but since Golden Leaf doesn't serve alcohol, I would recommend order it to go and eat it quickly while it's still hot, one of the best dishes pairing with alcohol drinks. Other offerings such as Taiwanese sausage, popcorn chicken, oyster pancake, and vermicelli dishes are solid but maybe not as standout as stinky tofu, but still reminds you of Taiwanese street food. Over the years, dishes like beef noodle soup, duck noodle soup, and various cold cut plates have disappeared off the menu, making each visit feel more like a treasure hunt for available favorites. Tables are few here and service may slow down under high demand, though most returned customers remain patient because of the food. Parking is also somewhat limited, but the casual setting and friendliness of the staff make up for constraints. Golden Leaf remains a beloved gem in the San Gabriel Taiwanese food destination, the stinky tofu, when available, stands among the best I have ever had in the USA, please keeping Golden Leaf alive, and especially their stinky tofu, signing their petition or staying tuned via their subscriber, while their food maybe a little bit pricey nowadays, it is still worth if you are craving for authentic Taiwanese 小吃.

    Oyster Vermicelli
    Edward S.

Golden Leaf is a little spot serving Taiwanese comfort food such as oyster omelettes, popcorn chicken, and beef noodle soup. Oyster Vermicelli: The simple bowl only had a few ingredients, but it packs a punch. The vermicelli noodles are thin and chewy. The soup is savory, gooey, and full of flavor. With lots of little oysters, you can taste the briny flavors from the ocean. Dining Area: It's a small place with about a half dozen little tables. Parking: The little strip mall has a lot with a decent number of spots.

Oyster vermicelli, stinky tofu, pork belly rice, boiled spinach

As soon as we stepped in we knew what was on the menu. They had stinky tofu today, and our waiter told us this was a random once-a-week offering as they had been threatened with a fine by the city for making stinky tofu. (I don't know why this is an issue because you couldn't smell it outside the restaurant) This was our first time here and it was hard to choose even from the small menu. We ordered the oyster vermicelli, spinach, stinky tofu, and pork belly on rice. Too much food for two people who had just had breakfast, but everything was so good. The oyster vermicelli was amazing. We will be back to try more things!

Had no idea this place existed and i've driven by it so many times. Pretty great taiwanese spot! approved by my taiwanese bf lol oyster and intestine vermicelli noodles - 3.5/5 was good, the dish was flavorful and had a stew like consistency. i personally like my vermicelli noodles firm so i wasn't expecting it to be really soft. apparently that's the authentic way pork belly rice - 5/5 probably the best dish from our meal! the pork pieces were tender and flavorful. sausage - 5/5 great appetizer, can't go wrong cucumber salad - 5/5 refreshing and light. also can't go wrong with this oyster pancake - 3/5 would prefer if they used less sauce and if part of the pancake could be crispy. Overall, a good spot to try some comforting taiwanese dishes!

I'm from a small village in Taiwan called Meinong, next to Kaohsiung. Let me tell you this is legit. Waited 20 minutes for lunch on a Saturday. The son of the owner is working the front, he is very kind and is a great employee. The lu rou fan reminds me of home. Perfectly fatty with the sauce coating the rice. I've eaten and made a lot of it and I don't think I can make it remotely close to this place. I'll be back for Togo as it gets busy on the weekend. 20/10 experience

    Do they stop taking to-go?

They have both take out and dine in, but they may be temporarily closed in February until 2/26/25.

Hi. Does now could be dine in? Thanks 2023. May 19

I think they allow dine in now. My husband went pick up today and saw people eating inside.

Will it open for dine in service in 2/23? As of 1/27/23, owner said they are doing take out only. They have the Taiwanese intestine vermicelli back though! Yay!

    Yes

Are they open for dine in service?

We ordered pick up on 9/16/2021 and no dining in as of that date.

Is this place still open during covid? Called a few times and no one picked up.

Did you call on Monday or Tuesday by any chance? They are closed those days.

Are there any delivery services that pick up from here?

(Expect 15 - 20 mins) Parking is abundant, since there are few businesses in this plaza. For starters, my friend and I shared the xiao long bao, popcorn chicken, and beef rolls. Our first item, the popcorn chicken, was divine - medium and fried to perfection, couldn't ask for better! The xiao long bao was next on the list, and these featured a more thick but still chewy skin. Unfortunately, two of ours were served "stuck together" which led to them breaking - sad! The last item, the beef rolls, were amazing as well. Not only is it a timeless classic, but the beef wasn't too dry. Between these tasty bites, we also shared a honey lemon green tea. My friend warned me about these mug sizes, and yes... one is probably enough for a table of four to share! This drink was super sweet, and it was definitely in need of dilution to be drinkable. Once your belly is full, though, good luck getting out! The space inside is fairly tight but nonetheless well worth a visit! Easily one of the best popcorn chicken in town!

Grab a basket of the fried sesame scallion bread and get something saucy to dunk it in. Green Onion Sesame Pie: This prized basket of northern-style flatbread is probably what most people here are waiting for. The fried bread is cut into wedges with a crispy crackling exterior topped with fragrant sesame seeds. Inside, the bread layers are soft, pillowy, and bursting with green onions. Of course, it was the first thing that arrived, so we each voraciously ate a wedge on its own. Fish Filet with Bean Sauce: If you have enough self control, wait until they bring out the fish. The sauce is thick and savory. There's so much flavor from the minced garlic, fermented black beans, and scallions. The silky sauce seem to find a way into all the nooks and crannies of the stellar bread. Fried Red Yeast Pork Belly: The cooking technique of this dish is pretty cool. This is like a crispy char siu. The rich pork belly is marinated in red yeast rice wine for its aromatic flavor. It is coated in tapioca flour and then fried. The edges are crispy and kind of chewy while the meat is juicy and tender. Tofu Skin, Soy Beans, and Mustard Greens: The super thin tofu sheets and soy beans are a Shanghainese classic. Big portion for like $10. The Taiwanese seasoning mix brought me right back to the night markets to Taiwan. It's truly the 5 spice powder that hits the spot. The batter wasn't thick, so the chicken didn't taste very battery/ cakey. That's what I hate about some places that make popcorn chicken. It also wasn't too spicy for me. It was just right. I ordered the minced bowl, which is actually a plate. For like $12, it was actually pretty good and the portions was huge. The boiled / blanched cabbage and broccoli were soft, sweet, and tasty. It balanced out some of the pieces of pork, which had too much meat in it. Definitely a very savory and rich dish. Omg and the sauce from the braised minced pork drizzled over the rice was just so perfect! It made the rice extremely delectable. I'm not a stranger to bringing food home for another meal. *Steamed Mini Buns - juicy with flavorful pork filling, adequate skin thickness, good size buns *Stir-Fried Noodles with pork - best dish out of the 3, good balance between pork, veggies, and noodles, mild spice level was perfect, portions were reasonable for the price *Lamb Noodles Soup - great amount of lamb and noodles, lamb was tender, noodles were a tad mushy on the edge... they need to be firmer, soup was savory *Jasmine Green Tea with honey - good size cup, tea was a bit bitter, probably needs more honey Food came out steaming hot and timely. Staff and service were wonderful. Yan, the server, was patient and helpful. He did an amazing job working the entire floor by himself. Thank you Yan! High recommend this place for their pan-dried and soup noodles. I would come back for more pan-fried noodles and try their pan-fried dumplings. Btw, cash, Zelle, or Venmo payment ONLY for bill total under $50. Bring cash if you don't plan to eat lots.

I have been coming here for years. I like the beef roll here. It doesn't disappoint…read more The beef and tendon noodle soup is sometimes a hit and miss. This time it was very good. I have had ones in previous visits that the beef was chewy, not tender. You have a choice of regular noodles or hand torn noodles. Hand torn noodles are more filling since the noodles are much thicker than the regular noodles. They are both good. It is a matter of preference. The minced pork with noodles (aka Jia Jiang mien) is also good. For this visit, I did not order dumplings. But their dumplings are usually good. The service is adequate but don't expect good service.
