So, I appreciate that they made sure my shrimp burger had no onions since I'm allergic to them. But unfortunately, it needed more flavor and sauce. I was so disappointed because I've had it multiple times before and it was delicious. It seemed like an off day in general when I went on March 21st because the drinks also weren't up to their usual standards. The pear lychee tea didn't have lychee flavor. Great pear and jasmine flavor though. And the orange wang was strangely bitter! I've had it before and it wasn't like that! Good tater tots though, fresh and crispy. Service was friendly as always. 4 years later, and Bopomofo is probably my favorite boba and tea spot! Mainly because they now offer seating and are not exclusively to-go. I like to come here with my laptop, tablet, and journal to "lock in," and I often get a lot done. I'm currently writing this on a Wednesday afternoon (around 2:45 PM) in June, and it is not busy at all. Some people are sitting and working on their computers, but the parking lot is pretty much empty. Probably the emptiest I've seen it (and it gets very very busy). The wifi wasn't working when I arrived. My devices were connecting to the network, but nothing was loading, and I kept getting those "Check your connection" messages. There was a male staff member checking in on everyone, so I asked about the wifi. He checked and said they restarted the router, and shortly, I was able to connect and be online! So thank you :) Drinks are still unique. Every once in a while, there are special deals and discounts and seasonal drinks of course. I'm glad to see they made the black sesame matcha a permanent addition to the menu, because it often sold out quickly during spooky season. Still recommend Bopomofo. I haven't been to any of their other locations, but it's nice to see them expand. Congrats btw! I hope they come out with a rewards loyalty program tho. read more

There is a promo on Doordash currently - 45% off orders $15+! Amazing deal! Got the Scallion Pancake Chicken Wrap Supreme ($14.50) was pretty good. It consisted of a house made scallion pancake with chicken tender, egg, cabbage, Thai basil, and cheese. It looked pretty small similar to a snack wrap but it was very filling. The chicken tender was similar to popcorn chicken. Wished it was more crispy since it seemed pretty dry and not much of a crunch. The pancake was a bit bland but I enjoyed that it wasn't as oily as scallion pancake usually is at other places. Overall, I felt like this was slightly overpriced but it was worth trying! The Black Sesame Matcha ($8.50) was amazing! I got it in large so that was extra $1. Requested it with regular ice, half sweet, and oat milk and really enjoyed that it wasn't packed with ice and not overly sweet. It's nice that they don't charge extra for milk substitutions! The matcha tasted very rich in flavor and I could tell they most likely use ceremonial quality matcha. The sesame was very nutty and really enjoyed that they make it in-house. This was definitely one of my favorite drinks! NOTE: it's very important to give it a good stir prior to drinking otherwise the sesame just sinks on the bottom! The Lychee Pear Blossom ($8) was so good! I got it half sweet with regular ice and it was just the right amount of sweetness and ice! Loved how they use fresh lychee and pear with no artificial colors or flavor! This drink was very refreshing and fruity! The green tea wasn't too overpowering and made the drink even more enjoyable! Overall, I really enjoyed my drinks and the wrap was ok. Then I checked out their website and saw they had a fish sandwich featured by the LA Times... yeah, that definitely got my attention. So I went. Right away, the menu surprised me--in a good way. I noticed they had a shrimp burger, and since I just got back from Japan (and was still thinking about that McDonald's shrimp burger), I had to try it here. Order came out in under 10 minutes, which honestly isn't bad at all for how busy the area gets. First bite of the shrimp burger? Immediate happiness. Like, loud "mmmmm" type of happiness. For $15, you expect something solid--and it delivered. The patty was packed with flavor, perfectly cooked, and the pickled jalapeños gave it a nice kick. Then that honey wasabi yuzu sauce came in with a sweet, tangy balance that just tied everything together. Not gonna lie... I liked this more than the one I had in Japan. Then came the fish sandwich. And wow. I'm pretty sure the fish is wrapped in nori, which already levels it up. Super crispy, tangy, a little sweet, a little creamy--just everything you want in one bite. The table that we sat at had food debris on it. Mentioned to the staff, came over with a bucket and a towel, and wiped the table. There was a lot of water left after wiping. It would have been a waste of paper napkins if we tried cleaning it ourselves, so we let it air dry. Probably took us about 15 min for the table to truly dry. At the table, the sitting area along the walls in the corner were not comfortable for long durations. They do have outlets below the sitting area to charge laptops in case you choose to do remote work there. We came on a Sunday afternoon and it was quiet, not too busy. This was my first time at the cafe, and the interior was well-decorated and comfortable, with neon lights adorning the space. The barista was friendly and helpful while I was deciding what to order. HEY SESAME MILK - 6.50 This is a lactose-free milk-based drink with a black sesame and honey paste mixed in. I asked for 75% sweetness since my cousin warned me that the regular level would be too much. The black sesame was incredibly hard to mix thoroughly, even though I was aggressively stirring my straw for a couple minutes. Overall, the drink was pretty good despite not mixing well. The black sesame flavor was incredibly roasty and nutty, but there could have been be a bit more of it. The honey was slightly overpowering. Bopomofo has an extensive menu featuring modern twists on traditional milk tea and coffee drinks, with fun flavors like strawberry corn milk and carrot matcha latte. There's also plenty of Taiwanese street food options, with mapo tots being one of their most popular items. One of my go-to study spots when I'm in the area. They have really tasty snacks, my favorite of which is their mapo tots. There is a small wait for food, as it is made to order, but not too long where it gets annoying. The service is good and the space inside is aesthetically appealing. The only complaint that I have is that the seats are all the wooden benches and wooden seats, and do make it hard for people to stay there and study for long. Overall, I'd give Bopomofo a 7.5/10! Decent space to sit down and eat, study, chat, etc. The one major downside is parking. It's a nightmare here. Golden Deli is in the same parking lot and there is always a line out the door so I think that's a big reason behind it. This place has more than just drinks, they also have popcorn chicken, sandwiches, burgers, and even tacos. I only had an appetite for a drink so I got the orange Wang. The name stood out to me and it was an unusual option given most people probably get their milk tea (I assume). But I wasn't disappointed at all! I had to visit the iconic Bopomofu, as a long-time fan of Wong Fu YouTube videos! Ambiance is fast-casual with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, sprinkled with elements of neon lights and elements of iconic Taiwanese night markets. The food was not amazing, but not bad. We got the braised pork rice and the original popcorn chicken with white meat (each about $15-20). The pork rice lacked strong flavor and the pork-to-rice ratio was less than ideal, and the popcorn chicken with white meat with original seasoning tasted dry. It seems as though their more popular items on the menu are their sandwiches. Their drinks, on the other hand, were spectacular. I'm a huge fan of matcha and wasn't expecting too much since it's not a matcha place, but was pleasantly surprised by their wide array of flavors and deep-green appearance! I opted for the strawberry seasonal and their blueberry matcha lattes - both spectacular and comparable to the Blank Street matcha counterpart! Only thing is that you cannot change the ice levels. The reason I can't give this place 5 stars is because of the food. I've had better shrimp burgers before that were cheaper. The portion size was quite small as well. Taiwanese Fried Chicken Sandwich: Mediocre chicken sandwich. It contains a fried chicken breast filet, napa cabbage slaw, Thai basil aioli, and cucumbers. The chicken needed to be cooked longer in my opinion. My favorite thing about this was the bolo buns. Spicy Popcorn Chicken: This was not any better than other popcorn chicken I've had elsewhere. I like the option to be able to choose between white meat or dark meat. I wanted a mild seasoning, but this turned out to be way too spicy. I could not eat more than one piece. It comes with a Thai chili aioli sauce on the side. Some standout drinks for me are: Assam Milk Tea: Has a nice earthy flavor and silky texture. Great for when I want something simple. Orange Wang!: Super creamy and milky with a mix of citrus and vanilla flavors. This is one of my partner's favorite beverages ever. Ba-La Matcha - A refreshing drink with quality ceremonial matcha. I love the guava nectar. Make sure to mix your drink well to taste the tropical and matcha flavors together. This store location is pretty small. Its light airy and not heavy. The spicy popcorn chicken, I enjoy the seasoning they use but not only does it need to be crispier it also needs more basil, there is no basil flavor. The drinks! My favorite one was the lychee pear but even then it was just okay. It just taste like watered down lychee can juice, not much of a pear flavor to me. The B.O.G I was most excited for but it wasnt that good. It just taste like water with a hint of blueberry but there is 0 tea flavor. I think Ive been consistently saying thaf I wish the tea flavor at bopomofo was actually strong and good but it stays muted. The triple matcha, I liked the strawberry part but the matcha was grainy and it was just such a thick drink. I like a more smoother cleaner matcha latter and this one tasted like a smoothie left out from the morning. Lastly the high mountain paradise was okay. Again needs more tea flavor but you can definitely taste more guava over mango. I've been to a few more locations and you can tell their quality is consistent everywhere. I tried the Blueberry Matcha with OatMilk and boba and it was absolutely delicious. 2.5 Yelp Stars*** Came to Bopomofo Cafe over seven years ago when they were still pretty new. I remember trying a boba fruit tea then and it was ok. Fast forward to now, this cafe had been here for years and heard they were about to open a second location at Downtown Disney. I also heard the walnut shrimp burger and the mapo tofu tater tots were good or were recommended from several people. My family and I decided to add this place as our final stop before heading back to the Bay Area. Big regrets! My husband pre-ordered the walnut shrimp burger combo with the mapo tofu tater tots ahead of time with several drinks. We thought if we ordered at least 20mins ahead of time and got here, we would not have to wait as long. Nope, there was still a wait! After we got our food, we decided to try them in the car. The initial taste of the honey walnut shrimp burger tasted familiar, but it was honestly very plain. Not sure why this was even a suggestion. There was barely any sauce inside the burger. Our toddlers did not like it either. The mapo tofu tater tots were nasty! My husband and I grew up eating mapo tofu and agreed this was nothing close to the authentic taste. It was by far, one of the worst mapo tofu we tried! Absolutely disappointing! The boba drinks were not good either! We ordered four drinks which included a milk tea, a sesame milk tea, a corn drink, and a popular fruit tea. Honestly, the drinks were so bad I did not bother to remember them for my review. The boba tasted like what college town boba used to taste like 20 years ago when boba was still new and not trendy. It was terrible! We ended up tossing some of the drinks away. So surprised Bopomofo Cafe was able to stay in competition with so many other boba spots in the San Gabriel vicinity and receive such high ratings! We would not be returning as there were tons of delicious cafes and boba drinks to try in San Gabriel. However, the menu was very creative and the workers seemed to be friendly. Place was packed when we went and most of the customers looked like they just finished college or were in college. Prices were slightly cheaper than other boba shops. It was kind of loud inside too. You can tell it's made with fresh chicken, not frozen. The quality shows how much passion and care they put into their food. It's definitely worth it in my opinion! Plus, it comes with a yummy basil aioli sauce, and their spicy version is actually spicy. I also love getting their Taiwanese chicken sandwich. Their twist of replacing regular buns with pineapple buns is so good. It's the perfect blend of sweet and savory. The cabbage slaw adds a refreshing bite, and you can make it into a meal by adding tater tots! They also have a spicy version, and it's delicious too! What makes them stand out is how elevated and unique they are compared to other boba spots. If you have an open palate, this is the place to try. They're always curating new menu items that go beyond typical boba shop options. I've tried almost everything, and honestly, I recommend getting any item to try. Everything is delicious, which is why I'm a regular. The vibe inside and outside is also great.
