    Purple Rice Roll with Egg
    Winn H.

** CASH ONLY ** Alright, now that that's over with, parking can be hard some mornings but overall not too hard to find. This spot is cash only and has rice rolls (purple rice too) - both salty and sweet. There are also noodle soups, and a few smaller eats (eg dim sum). It's a cozy spot, nothing extravagant. Service is pretty fast. Surprisingly even without a line, the girl that takes orders is quite rushed. This spot is definitely cash only, and even so they will not often give exact change outside of the exact bills. And they will round down. I had the purple rice roll with egg on my most recent visit, and it wasn't as tasty as the previous times that I visited, but it still hit the spot nonetheless.

Mom n Pop Taiwanese breakfast spot with dine-in and takeout. For breakfast, I shared a fantuan with purple jasmine rice, eggs, and pickles from here with some friends. The flavor of the fantuan was decent from the savory pork floss to the briny pickles, but I felt like there could've been more flavor. The fried egg was cooked well and crispy and the purple rice was moist, chewy, and not mushy. However, what lowered the score for me was the youtiao (Chinese donut) which felt old and was not crispy at all. The fantuan was also smaller than expected. We also shared a large hot sweet soybean milk which was almost scalding when we received it. However, we were warned by the staff about the heat when they handed it to us. The milk was good and not too sweet. It is pretty filling though. We got both for around $14 which wasn't bad. However, I feel like there are better options out there. There is a free parking lot in front shared with other businesses as well.

solid little slice of taiwan right here in southern california. what this place is known for is their fan tuan rice roll - i had to try. got it with the purple sticky rice wrapped around it, a fried dough roll inside, egg, pickled veggies, etc. it really hit the spot. gave me the carbs i needed to go on with the day hehe. i also tried the fried radish cake and that was so delicious with a little chili oil and scallion soy sauce. green onion pancake was mid, a bit overcooked and nothing special. service wasn't friendly just like "what do you want" "ok" but i wasn't expecting a super strong front there. the look is giving small lil taiwan spot lol. this place is a classic establishment of the 626 and i'm glad i tried it. i'll have to come back for the salty soymilk with fried donuts!

I was looking for a Taiwanese breakfast spot and found this one super nearby. We came in on a Sunday morning and it wasn't packed and we were able to order right away. I ordered the Hot Sweet Soybean Milk, Taiwanese Donut, Pan Fried Green Onion Pancake with Eggs, and the Salty Fan Tuan with Purple Rice and Eggs. They have a small seating area where they will bring you your order. You do have the add the sugar to the soybean milk yourself, which is not what I'm used to but I guess it's good that you can control the amount of sugar in the milk. Everything was good, but out of what we ordered, my favorite were the green onion pancake and the fan tuan. The fan tuan is a bit smaller than what I've gotten from other places, but the purple rice adds a bit more aroma to it, and all the flavors just go really well together. I will have to try it with the pickles next time. The green onion was opposite in that it was bigger than what I've gotten at other places, and there's a good amount of egg on it that it's worth the addition. If you eat it with some chili oil and soy sauce it's great. This is probably one of the better places for Taiwanese breakfast that I've had here. I think I've found my new go-to place for Taiwanese breakfast and will be returning many more times. Note that it is cash only.

I love their egg pancake because they make it fluffy and not too dry. The service is one of the kind! The ambiance is very good especially brings back the memories from Taiwanese breakfast.

Finally!! My Taiwanese heart is so happy. On the way to NorCal, we decided to stop by here for some breakfast. I got the egg omelette, radish cake, and salty fan tuan with egg. The egg omelette was by far my favorite with delicious pieces of green onions in each bite. I don't even like green onions, but the green onions added made it special. The radish cake was a close second for me since it was pan fried nicely. Lastly, the salty fan tuan lacked flavor for me. I added an egg and that was the saving grace. Still loved it. I would come back just for the egg omelette.

吃了10年,這一次失望了 Disappointed as a 10yrs customer. Have been eating for 10yrs and this place I used to rate it Top 1 rice ball in LA but not anymore. Ordered my usually purple rice added egg and pickle $7.95. However, I got a soggy Chinese donut inside. Only last few bite can see pork floss and pickle. With $7.95 this price, I would rather go to Yimei for way bigger and more options :(

Food: 4.8/5 Service: 3/5 Value: 4.6/5 If you're looking for authentic Taiwanese breakfast, you've found it. The service is quite poor, a relatively run down shop, and only takes cash, but the food truly tastes just like Taiwan. I personally loved the dumplings, rice ball (fan tuan), and scallion pancakes. I'm pretty sure everything on the menu is quite tasty and I can't wait until I get a chance to try the rest of the menu!

Before trying this place, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I saw it on a must-try list and live nearby, so I decided to give it a go. The advertised must-get item is the fantuan, which is one of their specialties. I only enjoyed the purple rice and the crispy youtiao. I wasn't a fan of the rest. My wife, who is Chinese and typically enjoys this type of food, also didn't care for it. I probably wouldn't return, as they are primarily known for fantuan, and I didn't like it. I'm glad I tried it, though.

I always wanted to try their fan tuans and it did not disappoint! I ordered their salty fan tuan with purple rice, one with eggs & pickles and the other with just eggs. I also ordered their green onion pancake as well. First, the portion of the fan tuan is big and can definitely fill you up! The you tiao inside was crispy and the pork floss added a lot of flavor to the fan tuan because without it, it'll just be the rice, you tiao, and egg which can be kinda bland. I also really liked how there isn't too much rice compared to the toppings inside which is perfect. As for the green onion pancake, it was a little disappointing. The pancake had no flakiness to it and the layers were minimal. It also had no crispiness to it and was a little hard. The green onion was scarce in the pancake which was a let down because it's a green onion pancake but without the green onions. I do want to come back again for the fan tuan and maybe try their other items on the menu but I definitely wouldn't order their green onion pancake again. And lastly, they only accept cash!

Had the Fan Tuan and a beef roll and it was so good. The beef was super tender, and the sauce went perfectly with the flaky, bready wrap. I also tried the rice roll with pickled veggies and egg. Super flavorful and surprisingly filling. It's a no-frills kind of spot that mostly takes cash, but honestly, the food makes it worth it. There's a decent amount of seating too. We came on a Saturday morning with a group of four and found a table pretty quickly. Overall, tasty food, chill vibes, and great value. Would definitely come back and recommend!

Now that we have been living in LA for a bit and have gotten a chance to try some Taiwanese breakfast places in SGV, we can confidently say 大樹 is our favorite! They make the best rice balls (飯糰), with the perfect ratio of rice to fillings (which include fried dough, pickled vegetables, pork sung, and egg). I am especially partial to the ones made with purple rice (紫米) as it has a more fibrous texture. We are also huge fans of their peanut milk (米漿) and soy milk.

Huge Tree is a hidden gem hidden in the back of set back mall but then everywhere in Monterrey Park is in a set back mall. Your NAV System will be challenged. My system initially took me a Huge and Tall Store. So, a tincture of patience will be helpful. It's well worth the effort. The interior looks like an ancient Dry Cleaner where you take your ancient clothing. The Hostess/Cashier/Server has a vibrant huge personality and will guide you through the huge menu. Order anything here as you can't make a mistake. It's cash only, so leave your Credit Union Visa and Centurion Black AMEX at home. Dine in your car with the Flamin' Cheeto crumbs on the seat and a radio that crackles like a Chicharron or better dine inside at one of the few Formica Tables best suited for some Amah's afternoon of Mah Jongg. The kitchen is efficient and everything is fresh and made to order so something simple like Radish Cake with a thin Omelet on top will arrive before you find a spot for your iPhone, car keys and Oakley's. Other, more complex dishes show up after getting lot's of love from the Nainai workin' the Wok out of sight in the back and half glued to an episode of Chen Qing Ling on TV while pleating Dumplings by muscle memory. Huge Tree Pastry is all business so don't plan to linger over your Longjing Tea and Subing. You go here to be in touch with your Taiwanese roots or maybe you just woke up hangry and needed to eat something wonderful first thing in the AM other than cold Pepperoni Pizza winking at you from the fridge. Order at the Cash Register and try to ignore the pressure from the queue stacked up behind you muttering in Mandarin because they know what they want and you don't. You could wheel around and bark "wen so de pigu" but I wouldn't. I felt the pressure so I ordered just to get on with it. The takeaway is perhaps to review the menu before you go. I started with Silky Salty House Made Tofu poached in a splash of Soy with a tangle of Pork Floss which they should sell at Vons but sadly they don't, Pickled Vegetables, and Crunchy Fried Onion Slivers. This soulful bowl full might be sufficient for breakfast but then you'd miss out on everything else that sound good. I say over order and over eat. And they say Menudo is the cure for drinking past your limit last night at the Bar. This has that beat by a smile and mile. The Silky Salty Tofu is nourishing, delicious, soul settling, brain bathing, soothing soupy, calming comfort food. I impulse ordered one Pork Curry Pastry which was a cute little braided oval of shredded Pork mixed with Taiwanese Dry Curry. Was it akin to Indian Curry of which there are thousands of iterations or a Japanese Curry which is a piquant Cumin forward Vegetable Gravy? Nope, this ain't that. This small pastry football had a simple spice blend with a definite slow poke of warmth to it while maintaining it's Porcine integrity and all inside a Pastry Jacket as flakey as Trump's Merch. A fine nibble. The afore mentioned Radish Cake in an Opera Cape of thin greaseless Omelet is a traditional dish and here their version has no equal. It's an ingot of spongy springy Radish Curd ready for a drool of La Jiao You (Chili Oil). Poke it with your Chopsticks, tear it into bite sized bits and dive into it while it's hot. While I was ripping into the Radish Cake the Scallion Cake showed up also with another skinny Omelet on top. The crisp triangles of flat bready pastry were terrific and even better then next morning reheated in a dry pan slowly until the cracker crisp crunch took an encore bow. The highwater mark for this adventure were the Pork and Napa Cabbage Dumplings. Hot as Space X Booster Rocket. They were lovely wrappers of perfectly steamed dough stuffed with a huge porky Meatball and oozing loads of luscious juice. Din Tai Fung eat your heart out. You'll need a huge Chinese Soup/Serving Spoon to capture these slippery little Devils. There are 18 breakup Yellow Roses, 18 wheel free spirits who ditched the Corporate World for long haulin', "I'm 18, Honey, and finally legal." and there are 18 precise folds in a classic Dumpling. Not here. Then there are these ragged little beauties, all as different as a litter of Puppies and who cares whether the Dumpling are cookie cutter exact, these Dumplings are the best in the City. Huge Tree beckons and you'd best bring a huge appetite.

The xiao long bao was next on the list, and these featured a more thick but still chewy skin. Unfortunately, two of ours were served "stuck together" which led to them breaking - sad! The last item, the beef rolls, were amazing as well. Not only is it a timeless classic, but the beef wasn't too dry. Between these tasty bites, we also shared a honey lemon green tea. Chicken Fried Rice: It was soft and pillowy with great flavor, though I felt it could have used a bit more color. It looked a little pale, but it was still delicious. Grilled fish collar - Not bad but the mint didn't really go that well with it. Dan dan campanelle - Disappointing. Not good dandan flavor and it's a small bowl. Hainan Fish - WAY overpriced and it's just whatever. Why ruin something so simple and good? Duck drumstick on taro - WAY overpriced. One drumstick on a bed of taro mash with taro fries. It's cool the food is locally sourced and blah blah blah but it's hard to appreciate when it is not good. The price is 3x more than a real Chinese restaurant where you can get more skillfully cooked food, so value-wise it's quite poor and the reason for my low rating. Less then 10 minutes away you have access to some of the greatest Chinese food in America so why would you come here? Also the small restaurant is insanely loud and made for a poor atmosphere. Service was good.

After seeing a post about their Taiwanese style goose dish, my foodie family and I decided we had…read moreto give it a try. When I called to make a reservation, the staff explained that the goose dish requires a pre-order and isn't cheap. In fact, the price for half a goose is comparable to ordering a bone-in ribeye steak at a high end steakhouse. However, we are glad we went for it. The goose arrived as a cold cut plate, paired with a special dipping sauce that perfectly balanced the rich, fatty, and flavorful meat. It was my first time having Taiwanese style goose in the US, and it is absolutely worth trying if you have never had it before. The dish also came with a rice noodle soup made with goose oil, which was an excellent bonus. We didn't stop there. From the special lunch menu, we tried the pan fried egg, satay water spinach and lamb, house special braised pork rice, and fried cabbage with egg puff. From the regular menu, we ordered sticky tofu with pork blood cake, steamed cod fish, and sticky rice. The sticky rice was dry and not very flavorful, but everything else hit the spot, especially the mixed pork rice, which was outstanding and highly recommended for anyone craving authentic Taiwanese comfort food. On later visits, we went back for classics like three cup chicken, fried stinky tofu, jalapeño pork, and the Taiwanese cabbage pot. The cabbage pot was a standout, just generous portions, packed with variety, including fish balls, glass noodles, fried pork, and more. Some reviewers mentioned poor service, but our experiences across multiple visits have all been positive. The staff has been attentive, and the prices are very reasonable as long as you stick with the regular menu. Overall, the flavors are authentic, the portions satisfying, the only downside is after eating here I am always feeling thirsty because of MSG, but it won't hurt overall satisfaction and I will definitely keep coming back for more if I am in the area and craving for some Taiwanese cuisine.

I realize the kitchen is not capable to do stir fried dishes, as I found no SOUL in any of these Taiwanese staple dishes as I ordered. Note: They add in tax together to calculate the tips, which is not supposed to
