I'm a bit disappointed by Urban Plates. I usually get catering from Urban Plates and am happy with the portions and taste but my in person visit was not up to standards. The portions were quite small (for the plates the rest of the party had) the steak was extremely overcooked (I asked for it medium), and my salad was pretty bland. It was missing dressing and the toppings it claims to come with. I also got a side of mushrooms which was $6 for a very small portion. read more

I can tell this will be busy during Mon-Fri with office workers grabbing a quick lunch. My family and I ordered two entree plates with the seabass and two entree plates of the seared steak. The steak was a hit n miss. It was prepared to my mom & sister's liking but the meat was a bit tough to chew. My dad and I both had the seabass and we loved ours. That green sauce on top of our seabass really elevated the flavoring. Fish was not "fishy" at all and didn't even need any lemons. Extensive menu. Ordered Doordash since they're having a promo of 45% off orders of $15+! Got the Half Sandwich Combo ($12.50) but I got the Grilled Grass Fed Steak so that's an extra $2.49. it came with slice of toast and side (soup or salad). I got the Tomato Basil Soup. I also paid +$1.00 for Chimichurri. The 1/2 sandwich looked pretty small but it was stuffed with very generous portions of steak! It was an incredible medium rare and it was grilled very nicely. It was slightly dry and wished it had a bit more flavor but not a big deal! The Chimichurri was a bit disappointing. It seemed more like olive oil with bits of parsley than a sauce made with olive oil and blended herbs and parsley. The tomato basil soup was good. It seemed more like tomato sauce than a soup since the consistency was very thick. I liked that they used fresh tomatoes and it was packed with flavor. Also, really enjoyed the complimentary toast and croutons! Overall, I thought it was a good deal with the promo but a bit overpriced if I were to pay full price. I recently visited Urban Plates in Pasadena, near my office. It's located in an area with lots of restaurants, so don't confuse it with the restaurant across the street called Urbane Cafe. We also have an Urban Plates in Long Beach, and I have to say they're very consistent with their restaurant layouts and overall experience. This Pasadena location was especially beautiful. I loved the décor throughout the restaurant. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and quick to serve us. We dined in, and our food came out surprisingly fast. I ordered a kids' steak plate, and I appreciated that the staff didn't question or refuse my order. I know some restaurants don't allow adults to order from the kids' menu, but it's the perfect portion size for me. The steak was cooked medium as I requested, very tender, and the potatoes were nicely seasoned. They don't offer steak sauce, but I asked for the chimichurri instead, and it worked out. This was our second Urbane Cafe we visited in two months. We loved every bite of our meal. We tried for the first time the Crunchy Peanut salad, the Santa Maria BBQ Chicken salad and the Chimichuri steak sandwich. We cleaned our bowls the salads were absolutely delicious. The staff was really friendly and patient with my group. I usually love Urban Plates, and I love their Chimichurri Grass Fed Steak. However, lately it has been hit or miss for me. The cook on the steak is rarer than what I would order, and the sides would be way too salty. I really like their sides for the most part. I absolutely adore the roasted brussels sprouts and their salads. The dressing on the salad is really tasty and fresh. The mashed potatoes is loaded with butter which makes it really tasty, but it is a bit sickening after a while. The ambiance is really nice though. I love how comfy the seatings are as well, and I could honestly spend hours here eating and talking with my friends. I think I just need to visit again and see if my experience changes. read more

There's also parking in the lots on the opposite side of the street, but those also fill up quick. Urban plates offers up a variety of foods that trend mostly to the healthy side. The prices are a little higher end for lunch, but the quality makes up for it. I ordered the Moroccan chicken with rice and was pleasantly surprised by the flavor. It has a nice spice flavor to it, not to be confused with spicy. The sauce has a slight sweetness that pairs really well with the rice. The bread offers a great way to scoop up the last of the sauce and as a nice change in texture. The service was incredible and everyone was really friendly. When we arrived for lunch around 12:30 Wednesday there was a very long line that moved pretty slowly. Everything took a while to come out, but service was very nice and friendly. I got the chili glazed grilled tofu plate with sides of mushroom stuffing and beets & goat cheese. Everything looked good, so I was surprised how unremarkable it ended up tasting. Everything I got tasted fairly standard but somewhat plain. The tofu was kinda dry and the stuffing was on the mushy side. I also got a slice of mango tart. That was probably the most disappointing one for me. First, I was surprised how small the piece was (maybe 2.5" wide at the crust end) for $8.25. But worse, it tasted strangely sour and the mango was stringy. I don't know if it was an off day or what. But given the popularity and good reviews, I'm just really surprised overall by the food I received. I parked in the garage behind the restaurant. My wife has celiac disease and has to eat gluten-free or she becomes very ill. Unfortunately, the staff did not seem very knowledgeable about celiac and told us that the French fries were gluten free and prepared in a dedicated fryer. When I looked at the menu and didn't see "GF" after "French Fries," I questioned the server. He had to look at the menu before saying "I guess they aren't gluten-free." Not reassuring. So many other better salads of better quality and taste to get for lunch (Mendocino, Oinkster) for the same price, or less, it ain't cheap here. After so many years walking by Urban Plates, I finally walked in. This is one of those fast casual restaurants where you order at the counter, are given a number and they bring the food to your table. During lunch, the line can get long, but it moves fast as long as the people already know what they want. I was not one of those, so I kept waving people to go ahead of me. Once seated, the food surprisingly came out rather quickly. We ordered about 6 plates, but I only tried a few. Unfortunately, when we were ordering, we felt the pressure of people lined up behind us, so really didn't read the menu carefully. The grass fed steak is decent. Nice flavor, cooked slightly over medium and not tender, but not tough either. The brussel sprouts were drizzled w/ balsamic. I know this is a classic way to prepare it, but it covered up the taste of the sprouts. A side of Caesar's salad was piled onto a tiny plate, so with the smallest movement, things were falling everywhere. The tumeric rice that came as a side had no tumeric flavor, it was ok. The wild ahi Niçoise salad looked great, but the balsamic dressing really didn't pair well with the tuna. The chicken tenders were good, and the marble potatoes ... well, tasted like potatoes. The toasted rustic bread that came with each dish was great. Nice crisp edges with a chewy middle and a charred smoky taste. The service was very good. We constantly had people come by to check on us and clear our table. Even one of the chefs came out to greet the customers. The interior is charming in its own way, with greenery and wood accents to give it a very natural, earthy vibe. Though the dishes we ordered didn't impress us, I still might return, after I study the menu a bit more. read more

Having lived in the area for a bit, Urban Plates is a spot I've often passed by though never tried. I know I had to stop by with a friend and check it out. She drew me to the grilled steak, which I had with their ginger rice and roasted marbled potatoes, and she had the Carribean Salad. Ordering was fairly straightforward, though it took a while even though there was no line at the time. After ordering, we got a number; utensils and water were self-serve. A staff member shortly brought us our food, and we enjoyed sitting facing traffic. (There's something about a nice breeze on a lukewarm summer night.) The first bite of grilled steak was perhaps the first disappointment, since I ordered it medium rare, and this steak was tough to chew. The rice was fairly tough, dry, and grainy, and the roasted potatoes were of a similar texture, dry and rough. (The purple was definitely a surprise though.) Her Caribbean salad? Amazing, though! It had a nice tangy dressing and was not overdressed. The medley of roasted cashews and greens also gave it a chew, and the fruits in contrast a juicy bite. Both entrees also came with buttered sourdough bread, and they were definitely on the charred side, grilled a tad beyond the sweet "just right" golden brown. All in all, I have mixed reviews.
