What a lovely experience and meal we had yesterday at the South Lake location of Urban Plates. I "researched" on Yelp restaurants that would suit both the tastes of my friend and myself, and Urban Plates seemed to fit the bill. From the moment we walked in, the fantastic aromas of the food, the gorgeous ambiance, and the lovely air conditioning, told me, good choice, lady! A good choice was also confirmed at the ordering bar, when we saw the attractive menu, desert samples, and the smile of the sweet young lady, Sheila, who took our order. Our food and beverages arrived in no time, but the presentation and taste told us nothing was rushed. Everything was delicious, but my favorite was the corn on the cob, along with my crispy French fries and done to medium-well perfection, steak. I received two corn cobs and had to bring one home to my husband to eat, and I guarantee we will be returning, but next time to the Brea location. But, you want to know what is really the BEST about Urban Plates and the Pasadena location? The staff! Like I said previously, Sheila, who was so kind and patient explaining the food, at the counter, later helping us with our dessert and coffee choices, and then Javier, who was so engaging and wonderful with anything we needed. Javier is a hospitality professional: smiling, helpful, friendly, and fun. The management must be wonderful to have such quality and happy people like the young lady and Javier working at this location. You know, in any business, you can have the best product in the world, but if you don't have GOOD people, in front of, behind, and along with your product, you really have nothing. The HUMAN experience is still VERY important, in what's becoming of this AI world. I choose the world of Sheila, Javier and the Pasadena PEOPLE at this Urban Plates. FYI: there's plenty of parking in the back parking structure and Urban Plates validates for an hour and a half. Did I mention the dessert samples? I brought home a generous slice of hummingbird cake for my husband, which was eaten and thoroughly enjoyed with a glass of ice cold milk! We drove in from Vegas and couldn't check in to our hotel for a few hours and we hadn't had lunch yet. This place was walking distance from us and there was a burger for my husband and lots of healthier options for me. Score! The dining area is spacious, clean and decorated with an earthy industrial blend. This is a walk up and order type deal. The young lady behind the counter greeted us with a smile & was very polite throughout the ordering process. We took our number and found a seat. Our food was brought out very quickly. Both min & my husband's meals were pleasing to the eye and prepared just like we ordered. My husband said his bun & fries were average tasting but the meat and toppings on the burger were good quality. My grass fed steak was very flavorful and prepared just the way I ordered it. I asked for 2 sides of broccolini which were cooked just right and seasoned with what tasted like a balsamic type of sauce. Not heavy or syrupy at all. My only complaint-it was luke warm @ best despite it coming out of the kitchen so quickly. The grilled piece of bread was very tasty but stone cold. Idk how that's even possible unless all the bread is grilled in mass quantities and placed under a warmer until it's time to go on a plate. The servers were all really great, the restaurant & bathrooms were very clean, the presentation and flavor of the food (my dish anyhow) were great also. The missing element....HOT FOOD! This is my third visit to this location, and it's been great every time! I love that you can come here and get an elevated meal in a casual eatery. There are so many options from sandwiches and salads to steak and seafood. Everything tastes delicious and freshly prepared. This time I ordered the steak meal with the spicy teriyaki sauce with Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes. Everything had a lot of flavor. What I also like about this restaurant is the numerous customizations with sauces and side dishes. You won't get bored here. Lulu was the person who took our order. She was personable and friendly and gave some great recommendations. I will definitely take her advice and order the salmon the next time I visit. My first time back to Urban Plates after 5 years. I came here with my work colleagues for a team lunch celebration. Great interior space with an abundance of inside and outside seatings. They don't take reservations. I called ahead and spoke with the manager, Jayden. He gave me the blessing to arrive 30 minutes or so early and reserve the tables I needed. I brought 3 labels with the word "RESERVED" and placed them on 3 tables. It worked perfectly. Thanks Jayden! They no longer operate in cafeteria style. You just walk up to the counter, order, pay, get a number, choose an open table, and wait for them to bring you your food. It is a much better system now IMHO. Well done! We had a total of 13 people. We each ordered and paid for our own lunch. I got the Grilled Cage Free Chicken with Beet Salad + Goat Cheese and Roasted Brussel Sprouts plus Pineapple Coconut Lime. Beets were solid with a good bite. Sprouts were tasty, but I didn't care for the sauce or dressing they put on it. Chicken was slightly dry unfortunately. Toast was decent. Tropical drink was refreshingly good. I probably won't get the chicken again, but I would definitely get the two sides with salmon and drink next time. They have a small bakery section which worked out for us. Hit two birds with one stone. I pre-ordered a whole Chocolate Vanilla Layered Cake two days before our lunch. It had multiple layers of chocolate cake plus vanilla creme filling in between and some orchids and black berries on top. A very pretty cake! Moistness and sweetness of the vanilla creme were perfect. Chocolate cake itself was just a tad dry and a bit crumbly... wished it was more solid. However, the pairing of dry cake and moist creme still made each bite decent. Overall dining experience was wonderful. Jayden and his staff were amazing and attentive. Food came out hot, fresh, and timely. I facilitated a game activity for my team and didn't get a chance to eat my food so it got cold. Special thanks to Jayden for going above and beyond in bringing me a new replacement plate of food as I was leaving. What a thoughtful and super kind surprise! Thank you Jayden!! I'm a bit disappointed by Urban Plates. I usually get catering from Urban Plates and am happy with the portions and taste but my in person visit was not up to standards. The portions were quite small (for the plates the rest of the party had) the steak was extremely overcooked (I asked for it medium), and my salad was pretty bland. It was missing dressing and the toppings it claims to come with. I also got a side of mushrooms which was $6 for a very small portion. read more

Came here on a Sunday afternoon with the family for lunch. There's a parking garage off of Del Mar Blvd. 90 mins free with validation. Don't forget to have Urban Plates validate your parking stub. The steak was a hit n miss. It was prepared to my mom & sister's liking but the meat was a bit tough to chew. My dad and I both had the seabass and we loved ours. That green sauce on top of our seabass really elevated the flavoring. Fish was not "fishy" at all and didn't even need any lemons. Extensive menu. Got the Half Sandwich Combo ($12.50) but I got the Grilled Grass Fed Steak so that's an extra $2.49. it came with slice of toast and side (soup or salad). I got the Tomato Basil Soup. I also paid +$1.00 for Chimichurri. The 1/2 sandwich looked pretty small but it was stuffed with very generous portions of steak! It was an incredible medium rare and it was grilled very nicely. It was slightly dry and wished it had a bit more flavor but not a big deal! The Chimichurri was a bit disappointing. It seemed more like olive oil with bits of parsley than a sauce made with olive oil and blended herbs and parsley. The tomato basil soup was good. It seemed more like tomato sauce than a soup since the consistency was very thick. I liked that they used fresh tomatoes and it was packed with flavor. Also, really enjoyed the complimentary toast and croutons! Overall, I thought it was a good deal with the promo but a bit overpriced if I were to pay full price. I recently visited Urban Plates in Pasadena, near my office. It's located in an area with lots of restaurants, so don't confuse it with the restaurant across the street called Urbane Cafe. We also have an Urban Plates in Long Beach, and I have to say they're very consistent with their restaurant layouts and overall experience. This Pasadena location was especially beautiful. I loved the décor throughout the restaurant. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and quick to serve us. We dined in, and our food came out surprisingly fast. I ordered a kids' steak plate, and I appreciated that the staff didn't question or refuse my order. I know some restaurants don't allow adults to order from the kids' menu, but it's the perfect portion size for me. The steak was cooked medium as I requested, very tender, and the potatoes were nicely seasoned. They don't offer steak sauce, but I asked for the chimichurri instead, and it worked out. The concept here is fresh, affordable mix and match type food as a plate, bowl, meal salad, etc. You can look at the other reviews to get the idea -- this review is mostly about customer service and large groups. A local org I do work for needed a place to feed about 50 young people newly arrived for school, and Urban Plates completely delivered on all fronts! The shift lead Nohemi was amazing; super helpful and strategic in getting the kitchen and staff ready for the influx of people. I'm pretty sure our group pushed the limits of the kitchen and staff, but you'd never have known with the ease of ordering (we provided the young people a limited menu and Nohemi wisely gave it to the kitchen in advance), speed of the food coming out, and overall enjoyment of the guests at the tasty, high-quality meals! The dine-in space is huge and easily accommodated the group while still not feeling crowded, and there was still plenty of space for other patrons. Huge thanks also to the manager Jay and chef for making this work, and for being patient and kind to every person. If you decide to have a larger party here, do call ahead and have a plan so that your experience is as seamless as this one, and so the excellent team here can make the yummy hospitality happen! read more

This place is the perfect halfway point between counter service and a sit down dining experience. We were greeted and helped by Lulu who really assisted us in making heads or tails of their enormous menu. I had the Chimichurri Steak with mashed potatoes and garlic mushrooms. It was all fantastic. (And to think I didn't like mushrooms as a kid.) Next time (and there will be a next time) I'm going to try Lulu's recommendation, the salmon. This place is amazing if you have kids or a large group as there's plenty of self seating. The concept is you order, find your own seat, then they bring the food to you. Our favorite selections here are the grilled salmon, jumbo chicken tenders, and chicken Cobb salad. Entrees typically come with two sides and there are a wide variety of carby delights and healthy vegetable options. The Mac n cheese, French fries, Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes are all solid choices. Be aware that the menu is immense and the line can get backed up from indecisive eaters figuring out the menu. Overall the food is cooked fresh, the service is amazing and the price is not that much more than your fast food joint. We tried for the first time the Crunchy Peanut salad, the Santa Maria BBQ Chicken salad and the Chimichuri steak sandwich. We cleaned our bowls the salads were absolutely delicious. The sandwich was rich in flavor and came with a side salad. Fresh baked cookies are also displayed. I've was so pleasantly surprised to see they offer Sriracha. This is officially my new go-to The Macaroni & Cheese was also super soft and just the right amount of cheesy, so I'm glad I chose that as a side.
