Service was top notch and food was Highland Park delicious. I'm a sissy when it comes to spiciness but I could stand it but the tingliness that usually accompanies any dish with mala was subdued. My friend is a vegetarian so we appreciate the variety of dishes that were available. I'd recommend the chicken wings and the mapo tofu and I look forward to returning and trying their other dishes.

this meal transported me to flavor town holy moly! everything was so incredibly delicious and the wings pack a nice punch [[HIGHLIGHT]]it's a small but charming space.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] really looking forward to my next visit and trying more dishes :)

Best wings in LA, hands down. The Mala has that signature numbing spice that leaves you craving more. The Mapo Tofu is also excellent, I found myself adding the extra wing chili flakes ontop of the tofu. The server was incredibly sweet and was chatting with us through the meal, and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the restaurant itself is clean and comfortable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The portion sizes are solid but I think the price is fair for what you get.

My friend had tried this spot a few times--he lives a bit closer--and he recommended it as a reasonably priced place to try for our weekly dinner. So off we went, trying to get there on the early side, as it's small (25 seats) and we'd heard it can fill up quickly. We arrived somewhere around 5:45 and were one of only two tables, but maybe a half-hour later it was completely full. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The staff is super friendly, the ambiance is cozy and clean, and I like that the spice levels can be adjusted.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We opted for the cucumber salad, dan dan noodles, dumplings in chili oil and the mapo tofu (which my friend wanted to try, since he hadn't yet). Food came out quickly, and while I realize that's not uncommon, I wouldn't have minded just a little more spacing. Still, it wasn't so quick to be a problem. My favorite items were the dan dan noodles, which were addictively delicious, and the dumplings in chili oil, which are longer and flatter than some and more flavorful than most. The cucumber salad was also excellent and a nice palate cleanser between other items. I was probably a little less enamored of the mapo tofu. It was good but not quite at the level of the other dishes for me. I still remember the mapo tofu served at the late, great Ricebox in DTLA, and theirs had much more flavor punch. But all in all, Mala Class was excellent, and I'd be happy to return to try more of the menu (and maybe repeat a few faves!).

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Super tiny but aesthetic spot that gets packed as it gets later into the night![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food was wonderful. Extremely flavorful but with a slightly unique flavor profile that I haven't tasted before for the mapo tofu and cold sesame noodles. The mushroom fries were excellent! Perfectly crispy with a nice seasoning on it.

mala class has been on my list for ages but Highland Park is a bit of a stretch, so I came with a friend on a Thursday for lunch. Parking was pretty chill at that time (snagged a street parking spot in front) and there was no wait. The dan dan noodles had a nice chew to them and the flavoring had the perfect hint of spice against the peanut sauce. The wings were a little too overseasoned -- we had to shake off all of the peppercorn on the top and it was still pretty salty and peppery (but not THAT spicy). They were perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, though. The dumplings and chili oil were probably my favorite bite. They're like wontons except they didn't do the last fold, and the sauce they are in is very well-balanced with a strong hit of acid against sweetness. The mapo tofu needed some sugar to bring out the flavor of all of the spices because otherwise it felt like there was no real flavor, where there were a million spices working against each other. I would definitely pass on this one but everything else was pretty good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior is very classically Highland Park-esque and our server was super nice![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would come back to try other dishes.

Recommend comíng in early as there isn't much seating and an ample wait time during the evenings leading into the weekend. Our party of 4 waited for 45 minutes, despite arriving at 6:30pm. Concerned we were not as it afforded our group enough time for us to walk down to the local barcade for a couple of fun goal arounds at the pinball and multiplayer racing games. The mala is so tastefully done here with the wings and the fried mushrooms (not pictured), stealing the show. The Dan Dan noodles prepared at bedside was a nice touch. Highly recommend for a unique and fun dining experience :)

waoooow surprisingly pretty good. was kinda skeptical because asian food in LA is questionable sometimes, but was pleasantly delighted with this meal. the mushroom fries were unique and had a nice batter texture to them. the chicken wings were crunchy and sauced perfectly. the cukes and beancurd were shockingly spicy but they weren't marinated as long as i'd like. the dan dan noodles were just ok! nothing too special about them. the service was good too- very nice and friendly people!

I've been wanting to eat here for a while and Wish I had sooner. That numbing sauce is outstanding. I brought a friend for lunch, there were a few tables occupied. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a small seating area but it's simple, bright and comfortable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The server knew the menu well. She recommended the Dan Dan noodles for my first time. We also ordered the fried tofu with garlic sauce and the pork dumplings. Unfortunately, my friend can't handle heat, so those items we were sharing couldn't be spiced up. My friend had Mikey's beef noodle soup and I had the Dan Dan noodles very spicy. Everything was delicious. Will definitely come back for some numbing sauce!

If one flaw could be found about this lovely Highland park joint, it would be that (despite the warning) it is nowhere near Szechuan spice level. That being said, food is absolutely fantastic. We had (mind-blowing) mushroom fries along side dan-dan noodles, mapo tofu and spicy dumplings. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great interior, Brooklyn atmosphere and amazing service make this place a must try.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

New favorite spot in highland park, wow! Garlic soy wings - 5/5 - holy crap, probably the best wings I have had in my entire life. We loved it so much we ordered 3 plates for my party of 3 so we each had one lol. They taste like Korean fried chicken. There are 4 pieces and they are all flats (my favorite!) very large sized pieces and the flavor was unreal. Favorite dish at this place. Dan Dan noodles - 5/5 - amazing! Great portion, flavorful, no peanuts which is great for those allergic, and just get this. Mushroom fries - 5/5 - I've never had mushroom fries before, but these were addicting and I could not stop eating them! The dry seasonings was so good I wish they sold it. Dumplings - 4/5 - great dumplings! The sauce was incredible Mapo tofu - 5/5 - I don't eat this but my husband thought it was insanely good. Very spicy so order mild if you can't do spice. Service - 5/5 - all servers very friendly, knowledgeable in the dishes, and attentive! Ambiance - 5/5 - very cute inside! It's quite small, and they don't take reservations so I recommend coming early. Not the best place for a large group though because of the size. Parking is easy, we found parking right out front the two times we visited. Overall found my new obsession!

I have driven past this place on York and was always curious so I decided to stop by. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a small, homey, and intimate interior. Makes you feel like you are at someone's home in a welcoming way.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I got the dan dan noodles (I liked the peanut sauce, but not a lot of pork with the dish), dumplings ( solid, nothing crazy), and apple soda (a little too sweet, but I enjoyed it). The dishes were solid, decent seasoning I was expecting a bit more in that department. Overall, it's a solid spot nothing too impressive. It's a cool spot to do small plates. They did forget about drink so I did have to remind my server, but overall service was alright. If you want expand your taste buds a bit give this spot a try.

Mushroom Fries, Mala Wings, Beef Noodle Soup
    Nani N.

Came here with my friend on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't crowded at all. We had to find parking on the street which was kind of inconvenient since it was a far spot away. The food was great! My favorite was the Mushroom fries and Beef Noodle soup. Everything was of course a little spicy and had a mala flavoring, so if that is something you enjoy, I would recommend this place. The entire bill came out to be $58 (not including tip) which is pretty decent for ordering 4 dishes.

    AMAZING FLAVORS!

The reception wasn't warm as the girl was on the phone and she just waved at us to get in. Food was scrumptious. Their basa fish fillet in chilli sauce had to be the best I've tasted. The fish was tender, sauce yummy, veggies fresh! It was excellently prepared. Husband and Wife beef and tripe slices was another outstanding dish. It was so good I had to order more rice to eat with it therefore happily broke my diet again. Steamd eggplant with pickled condiment on top tended to be on the salty side, it was soft and tasty. We'd been talking about getting Chinese food, and he picked Xiang La Hui, his go-to spot for classic Sichuan. I'd never been before, and was more than happy to try a new spot in the SGV. We met up at noon and stayed until the restaurant wrapped up lunch service and gently pushed us out the door, sometime around 2:30. The space was nice, instantly recognizable as a Chinese restaurant in Alhambra. It was pretty quiet the whole time, a good place for a leisurely catch-up. Service was fast and polite, though the combination of QR code ordering and poor Verizon service was a bummer. I had to cross the dining room to take down the wifi password posted on the opposite wall. We ordered a sizable spread for two people: Chong Qing fried chicken, dan dan noodles, wontons with chili oil, and pea tips with garlic. Everything was delicious, most of all the Chong Qing fried chicken, crispy nibbly bits of breaded chicken stir-fried with green onion and hot pepper. I love dan dan noodles and wontons, and thought both were great, if not the best I've had in the area. The pea tips were lovely, bright green and not spicy, but abundantly flavorful. I'd love to come back to Xiang La Hui and try more of the menu. It seems like a restaurant that does everything well, and I'll keep it in mind whenever I'm craving Sichuan.

What am I am trying to say is that the comment I wanted to do this immediately or drop everything and do this immediately is so overwrought and widely used that it lost all meaning. Kind of like calling this place an institution. So I will call this place what I should to not be drown in my own trite. One time I went to this place and I went cause I was invited to a birthday party. And it was a large group of people. Me and a friend debated if Penny, from the Big Bang, had eaten at this place. She was also in Charmed--- it is a household name, I can't remember it. So this place is famous enough to be a go to move, and it has many pictures of celebrities that have gone there. The food is also super good, so this place, like I said is an insititution. When I went there a second time, I was more aware of the place I was visiting and kind of was ready to receive its Chinese fare with an unhinged jaw. Yeah, that might not make sense but I wrote what I wrote. We had eniugh food to share between the two of us. It was that type of meal, where leftovers were welcomed and made sense. It took a while for our server to attend to us once we were seated (we waited about 10min before we asked to have our order taken) but after that the servers were very attentive. The place is busy. Quick turn around. One bathroom for the entire restaurant so expect a line. I saw a sign out front for valet parking but I didn't see anyone. But there's plenty of parking places nearby. Found a place down the street for $8 all day parking.

We got the Boiled Fish in Green Pepper Sauce, Toothpick Lamb, and Mapo Tofu. Everything was definitely super delicious. The dishes weren't too spicy for me, and I actually wish they had a bit more heat, but they did have a nice numbing kick to them. I do have a pretty high spice tolerance, though, so my experience may be different from others. My friend thought the dishes were pretty spicy, so keep that in mind if you're more sensitive to heat. The fish was super tender and soft, and honestly pretty addictive to eat. The Toothpick Lamb was pretty much the same--you just pop one in your mouth and then immediately want another. It had a nice salty, spicy flavor that made it really easy to keep eating. The only downside is, well, the toothpicks! They definitely slow you down. I also really enjoyed the Mapo Tofu. It was nice and flavorful and went really well with the other dishes. Overall, everything we tried was really good, and I can definitely see why my friends recommended this place.

They definitely know how to get people seated and keep the crowd moving in, but getting out was another story. Kept getting passed up when we were done and simply trying to leave. The food did take a while, but I can understand that when everything is being made fresh. Just know that if you're on a time crunch, this probably isn't the place for a quick meal. The gentleman who seated us and took our order was really nice, but after that, we pretty much felt forgotten about. Once the food arrived though, it was Good. Very flavorful, authentic Chinese food, and definitely worth trying. The atmosphere is loud and busy, no music, just the sound of a completely packed restaurant, so don't come expecting a quiet, relaxing dinner. Also, fair warning, some of these dishes are Spicy, and I mean actually spicy. If you love some heat, you'll probably love this place. Overall, I'd recommend giving it a try for the food. Lots of dishes to choose from. A good variety too of proteins, vegetables, noodles and Wonton soup.

The way it's set up is pretty cultural. It reminds me of some hole-in-the-wall Asian restaurant the way they have metal utensils at each table. It's almost like a self-serve system to certain tools which is pretty common. I haven't drank water out of metal cup in a long time, so that was nostalgic too. We tried a variety of dishes to get a fuller understanding of their menu of what this place has to offer. I was really looking forward to the beef roll because it's usually one of my favorite dishes, but this one was disappointing. I define a good beef roll as one that's a good mix of sweet, savory and refreshing. The meat makes it savory and the veggies are supposed to counter it make the whole dish feel light. If someone disagrees with me, please share your thoughts on what a beef roll should taste like. The one from Pine & Crane was drenched in sauce. I could not taste the meat or the veggies and the whole thing tasted like a stick of sugar. The mapo tofu was on point, but this is quality you can probably make at home. The flavor profile was very similar to that of stuff you'd get a grocery store. The three cup jidori chicken came recommended, so we tried it. The flavor is very pungent and goes well with rice. The braised pork in brown sauce was rich, tender, and melted in my mouth. My favorite of the meal was definitely the garlic vermicelli shrimp. The shrimp were fresh and cooked perfectly, while the vermicelli soaked up all of the garlic sauce. It was easily the standout dish and something I would come back specifically to order again. The Kung Pao chicken was tender, and a good balance of savory, sweet, and tang. The restaurant isn't that big but it does have tables suitable for larger groups. This is a decent spot for lunch. The only thing is the dishes are a little more expensive compared to other restaurants. The staff were attentive, efficient, and made sure everything arrived promptly which I appreciated.

The space feels worn -- menus tattered, décor dated, the whole interior overdue for a refresh. For a restaurant positioning itself at the higher end of Chinese dining, Meizhou Dongpo is sleeping on the finer details. No complimentary tea service, and rather than offering a pot for the table, they serve individual tea by the mug -- a comically oversized Western mug at that. Chopsticks arrive without spoons, and when you ask for one, you get silverware instead of the porcelain you'd expect at Chinese restaurant. The Peking duck accoutrements came with a little plastic spoon on the tray. Small things, but they add up.The fried rice was a letdown too and looked nothing like the menu photo. Spots like Din Tai Fung and Lunasia Signature are operating at a different level and the gap shows. Meizhou Dongpo has the bones of a great Chinese restaurant. The duck alone proves it. But until they invest in the experience around the food, it's hard to recommend at this price point.

The service is consistently great... attentive, efficient, and genuinely welcoming. Fair warning for anyone new to Sichuan cuisine, the dominant flavor is "spicy". That said, the dishes are not just about heat... they're layered, aromatic, and incredibly well-balanced. Every dish I've tried has been outstanding, both in flavor and presentation. If you're a fan of bold, authentic flavors and reliable service, this spot is definitely worth visiting. Tip - If you're new to the cuisine, I strongly recommend getting everything MILD spicy. I've been told by some of my colleagues that MILD spicy is still pretty spicy, so be warned. With that said, strongly recommend the dishes below. Lamb with Cumin 11/10 - My favorite dish here by far. Aromatic, flavorful, and the spices are just on point. Dan Dan Noodles 9/10 - Solid and consistently good. The sauce is properly seasoned and truly compliments the perfectly cooked noodles. Shredded Cabbage with Pork 9/10 - Not to be confused with twice cooked pork. This dish is so simple and bland looking, but it's packed with flavor... so good! Garlic Pork Belly 8/10 - This is a cold dish. The meat was perfectly cooked and properly coated in chili oil. Solid and consistently good. Kung Pao Chicken 8/10 - In my opinion, it's an elevated Kung Pao Chicken. Solid and consistently good.
