Local jewel in our backyard with wonderful cool ambiance and charming and attentive. Sitting at the bar, the food preparation could be nicely watched. And the various items were delicious, from miso soup and cucumber salad to black cod, sashimis and various rolls - just delicious!!

Solid roll spot in Highland Park! They offer both hand and cut rolls, which I appreciate. For hand roll, sit at the bar; for cut, get a table. We sat at the bar and ordered the six set hand roll: snapper, scallop, yellowtail, spicy tuna, crab, and albacore. My favorites were the snapper, crab, and albacore. The nori is softer than expected; I would have preferred a crunch. Also got the grilled cod bowl which was a nice addition to our meal. Ambiance is causal but inside is a bit dark.

I visited Sogo roll Bar on a Wednesday night around 6:30pm and was seated right away for a party of two. Parking is all street parking but it wasn't too difficult to find a spot. The ambiance inside was very nice, modern, cozy, and perfect for a casual night out or even a date night. We started with the lobster Krispy rice to share and it was delicious. For our main order we each got the five roll set and subbed the snapper for the scallop which ended up being a great choice. The scallop was actually my favorite of the night, super fresh and flavorful. I also really enjoyed the yellowtail and crab rolls. The salmon had a nice ponzu flavor and the spicy tuna had a great kick to it. The rolls came out at a steady pace and I was surprisingly full by the end. One thing I appreciated is how they tuck a small piece of seaweed at the end of each roll to keep everything from falling out. It was such a thoughtful touch. The place is definitely a bit pricier compared to other handroll spots but the vibe, ambiance, and overall experience make it worth it. I would definitely come back again especially for a date night.

This spot won major points with me! Great vibe, cool and casual interior, excellent service, great value, great sushi! I got the 6 set, which I highly recommend for 2 people. The fish was fresh, the presentation was classic, and though simple this was completely satisfying. Spicy tuna crispy rice was also great! This is the perfect spot to catch up with an old friend over a beer, hot sake, and some classic sushi rolls.

Stopped here for a little pre-dinner snack moment at 4:30pm on a Wednesday. We were the only ones inside and opted to sit at the bar. Love the decor inside - great silverware and cool decorations and trinkets! Since we were the only ones inside, we were tended to immediately. We ordered 2 hand rolls and 2 cut rolls. The fish we ordered in these rolls were: snapper, toro, albacore, and yellowtail. The quality of the fish was great, and the fusion of sauces and fish was great. The standout was the snapper, which had yuzu and lemon undertones. I will say though - since they make the rolls quickly in front of you, the craftsmanship isn't particularly outstanding - the hand rolls were on the messier side to eat, with the seaweed unraveling at times. Overall satisfied with my quick bite here. Interested in trying their other items like their donburi options!

A week later I found myself back at this place because I had the craves for it. This will be a short update to my prior review as that was in depth. Today I went straight for the five roll combo and substituted the yellowtail roll for the unagi roll since I didn't have one of those yet. I love unagi but this roll appeared sauceless. I asked if it came with eel sauce after I ate it and they said yes but I could always ask for more. Noted because it was very lacking in sauce. Another new roll today in my combo was the spicy tuna. Let me preface this by saying I've never been a spicy tuna fan. I'm still not. It's just not for me. Nothing wrong with the troll, I'm just not partial to spicy tuna. As a side note, to me, it was pretty spicy and I had to cleanse my palate so I ordered salmon sashimi to finish off my meal. The salmon sashimi was perfect and the pieces were buttery and generous. Lastly, I had a Yuzu lemonade as I wanted something other than a Coke. This was my first time trying such a drink and I enjoyed how it paired with the rolls. This is not a sweet lemonade so if you're looking for sweetness, this won't satisfy you.

Food: 5/5 Service : 5/5 Ambiance 5/5 I dream of the salmon sashimi. The bake crab crispy rice if good and something new I've never tried. The rolls are small but the quality is good. Ambiance is great all the details are really cute and the music is always good. A vibe fooooo sureeeee. New fav sushi spot in Nela.

The vibrant green on the wall as you walk in. The welcoming feeling from the host who also happens to be your server... I began my dining experience with a little beverage. Definitely a house recommendation- Miyako Nikon "yoigokochi yuzu sake" 10/10. A little yuzu is exactly what you need to enhance your experience. I ordered a miso soup as a starter due to the overcast weather. Then followed it with a spicy tuna crispy rice. The crispness was just PERFECTION. Flaky, golden, perfect bite ratio. Watching the ladies make everything was just the best part of my experience. Their knife work was just exquisite. Once my best friend arrived we decided to order the hand rolls and some cucumber salad.. the cucumber salad was the perfect juicy tingly flavor. Not overpowering with soy sauce but just tangy. A 10/10 experience. I will definitely be back sooner than I expected.

Hmm, something about Sogo did not click with me as I hoped it would. It was a kind of a rough little drive prior to eating here. At first, I thought it was just because I was in a bit of a mini social conflict with my partner BUT the more I tried remembering this meal... The more I realized how a bit forgettable it actually was. Maybe it was a little too much soy sauce dipping or maybe it just did not satiate my sushi craving but all in all, service also did not leave much of an impression. Unfortunately, we were also eating up at the bar. They were just opening and we might've been the first ones in. Perhaps they were still only getting started and the rest of the day turned out much better for the customers. I've gone to just a few hand rolls places and I think the extra citrus flavor in the soy sauce did not appeal to my tastebuds. I know it's crazy but the soy sauce as KazuNori is much tastier in comparison. The hand rolls were plump BUT there I also didn't get a refreshing crisp bite I feel like I've gotten from other spots (not just the one I listed a sentence ago.) The mixture of shades of green and the accent of art was very appealing and drawing to the eye. However, the service could've felt a little warmer. Whoever was taking our orders felt colder in her service but again, if it was out of the energy she might've picked up from a conflict that her customers might have just had-- I understand and would give their service another try.

Sōgo Roll Bar is a fantastic addition to the Highland Park food scene--especially for those around York Blvd. Known for their well-crafted hand rolls, it's an intimate yet unpretentious spot with serious flavor. My buddy and I sat at the bar--he ordered à la carte while I went with the 4 Roll Set (swapping Snapper for Albacore Kari Kari on Justin's recommendation). Each roll arrived quickly, with crisp seaweed and bold, fresh bites. We came in during a lull between lunch and dinner and got exceptional, attentive service. Sōgo proves small plates can deliver big satisfaction. A great neighborhood hangout--and even better, it's walkable. We'll definitely be back!

3.5 stars, but rounding up to four due to excellent service and beautiful ambiance. Sogo Roll Bar is a new addition to Highland Park, this is their second location (first one in Los Feliz, as they told me!) I'd never been to the first location so this was my very first experience with them. // FOOD // - 3/5 stars I ordered a set of 4 handrolls - and they let me swap out the snapper for the toro which was nice. The rolls varied in taste/quality... but one thing they had in common was the lackluster seaweed holding together the rolls. I'm not sure if it's the brand or because it's a little stale, but I had a pretty hard time being able to take bites out of the handrolls (had to kind of pull at the rolls to get the bites down). Seaweed is a pretty big component of handrolls! - salmon & spicy tuna handroll both rated (4/5): was my favorite!! the salmon was fresh and the roll tasted very good. spicy tuna was pretty yummy too - yellowfish handroll (3.5/5) was good! seemed also a little less buttery compared to most yellowtail I've had - toro handroll (2.5/5): possibly the most disappointing roll unfortunately. the fish did not taste very toro-like, it wasn't very buttery as toro usually is. and the color was a little darker and didn't seem very bright. not sure if that's an indicator of how fresh it is, but the taste was definitely subpar. // AMBIANCE // - 5/5 stars Ambiance was spectacular. It was newly decorated, the bar seating was really cute, albeit the stools felt a bit too far from the bar so I kind of had to lean forward a bit. Probably doesn't help because I'm a shortie though! // SERVICE // - 5 stars Super friendly service. The ambiance and the fantastic service fully convinced me they deserved the rounding up to 4 stars. However, I hope they take some time to look into the quality of their handrolls, would love to come back and support this new location!

highly recommend checking out sogo and trying their handrolls if you're dining in. last minute reservations were easy to get on the day of and i loved the sitting at the counter. my favorites were the yellowtail and unagi but you can't go wrong with any of them! there's street parking nearby

    Sakana donburi and unagi roll

Overpriced and under performing. I was excited for a higher end sushi restaurant to open up and walking distance from my home. I've given this place two chances in both times left me feeling very underwhelmed. I've had their hand roll sets during my dine in experience and they were OK. I then on a later date ordered the Sakana donburi with salmon and an unagi roll. My total was roughly 37.50 after taxes, not including tip. They charge a separate 10% fee for takeout (on top of LA ~10% tax). Again, I was severely underwhelmed and I feel like I overpaid for. The quality of the fish isn't anything to brave about and the amount of food they provide is very lackluster. I am definitely going to eat something else after this. As you could see from my photo, they provide very little. For about $40 I would hope to be full. My Donburi seem to have about two scoops of chopped salmon, a couple slices of cucumber, a sprinkle of sprouts and seaweed, and way too much ginger. There was a huge glob of ginger, then small chopped ginger underneath the salmon and it came with another small container of ginger. That was an insane amount of ginger and I'm not sure if they were hoping it would be a filler because they just are going to provide you with so little. Overall, I don't think I'll be returning here even though it is so convenient for me. I am very disappointed. The only thing I can say is that the interior is very beautiful.

Glassell Park is a hidden neighborhood in Los Angeles, anyway, and if you don't know what you are looking for, you might zip right past W&S, as we did. Parking is hit and miss, but there are side streets and you will find a space if you give yourself an extra 15 minutes before you come. The neighborhood is mysterious to me, sort of pricey grunge & hipster, iykwim. But! Once you are inside, you are in a completely different world. Bright, clean, genteel, muted, with dappled sunlight dripping through various apertures and alighting in a soft glow here and there on shining metal tables. It's beautiful. Some catchy upbeat contempo-pop music streamed steadily at just the right volume overhead. I found myself resisting the temptation to get up and dance. There are several rooms from which to choose, but I wanted to be seated on the wine-red suede banquette that gave me a view of the whole restaurant and out onto the tree-canopied street. From the time we arrived to the moment we left about an hour later, we were showered with warm smiles and attentive service. And the food? Exquisite. See my pictures. It was hard to choose. One tiny disappointment was they were out of the biscuits that I wanted to start with, but I enjoyed the crusty tender Clark Street bread slices served with warm creamery butter instead. It only got better from there. The two bowls we ordered were filled with fresh vegetables, cooked to perfection, topped with an egg prepared as we requested, i.e., over medium. The portions are modest and it was all so good, we didn't take anything home. We ordered coffee and were brought two tall steaming mugs of Americano, smooth, dark, and delicious. We would have been happy to overlook the slow service and enjoy a long, relaxed evening catching up with friends--until the end of the night. After we had already paid our bill and were in the middle of dessert, we were abruptly and quite rudely told we needed to leave because they were closing. I didn't even get to finish my dessert, and one of our guests had to abandon a half-full glass of wine as we rushed out. We ended up staying until about 9:30 p.m. and never felt rushed or pressured to order more. The staff was very friendly and made excellent recommendations, especially considering we were a bit picky -- one vegetarian, one pescatarian, and the other only likes dessert wines!! Definitely coming back with less picky people

Waiter Manuel. This…read moreis a review reflected on you, solely. Being kind is the moral of the story, from the beginning you were passive agressive with your comments and tone. Being in a party of 4 girls coming from high tea, we were dressed in elegant dresses, first comment was asking if we were coming from church, followed by eye flutters, short "okay" with an upward inflation to a joke about the day, an impatient comment about hurrying up and trying the wine while we were talking, asked for water when we were out, were left to pour the rest of our wine, didn't ask how the food was all the while was attentive to the table behind us, the cherry on top comment was when we were discussing the bill at the end, he was hovering at the table behind ours, then when we were ready, we asked to split the bill into 2, my portion on mine and the rest on another card, he then said "this isn't like a drive through, we can't do it that way" so I asked him to explain his comment, cause it was passive agressive and rude. After he wasnt able to becuase he wasnt expecting me to call out his rude comment, I had to then break it down and specify what I had ordered, he then sold "okayyyy....so how much, cause we don't itemize?" I had to again express for him to specify how they do it cause he has still yet to explain where his attitude is coming from and explain how they do their check splits, from my understanding it just felt like he wanted to play dumb and make me to the math, one I did he was like "ohh, okay" should have asked for the manager but we paid and left, I hasnt had this experience before being a returning customer, but he needs an attitude adjustment as his attitude was completely out of pocket. Do better Manuel, you alone got your place of work a 1 star. The rest of the staff was kind, facility beautiful and food and wine was good. This restaurant is not reflected in the 1 star.

The food pairs perfectly with the wine, and everything is genuinely mind-blowing to the tastebuds. The decor is meticulously and intentionally placed and makes the place feel so cozy. Whoever designed this restaurant is a true genius and perfectionist. They have a comprehensive multi-page wine menu that lists taste profiles and origins. I know nothing about wine, but if you're a wine snob, I'm sure you'll find great joy in choosing the right wine for you. The highlight of the experience was the staff working there. Emily and Alfredo are so very welcoming and kind. It's probably the best service I've received at a restaurant and I truly cannot overstate just how phenomenal they are. They went the extra mile to make us feel at home. On top of that, even though we've only been there a handful of times over the course of a year, they remembered us and even where we were visiting from. Thank you Emily and Alfredo!

The service was incredibly friendly and our winetender was very knowledgeable. She walked us through five different wines and explained the flavors and pairing suggestions in a way that was easy to understand. There was also a customer at the bar who was very friendly and showed us pictures of her wine adventures. She even recommended visiting Sonoma or Temecula for future wine tasting trips. We ended up choosing a red wine to bring to dinner and it was perfect. We would love to come back again the next time we are in Pasadena.
