Saw this was relatively new in the area but we hadn't been, arrived with a party of 10, the space was smaller than expected so not great for bigger parties. The menu isn't huge so we ordered a bit of everything. The mushroom fries were good and came with the extra numbing powder as did the chicken wings. The spice wasn't overwhelming but it did have the numbing effect. The chilli oil wontons weren't terribly spicy either and had a good chew. We got the cold sesame noodles for the kids and the Dan Dan noodles and beef noodle soup. The cold sesame noodles were a hit with the kids. The Dan Dan noodles didn't come with cucumbers like I'm used to and wasn't heavy on the meat either. It was heavy in the rich sauce and felt very heavy. The recommended spice was 2 chillis and it wasn't uncomfortable but my nose was a little runny. The beef noodle was a bit greasier than expected. I would skip next time although that actually had meat presence. Next time I might opt to try the mapo tofu. Mala Class is definitely a must visit! I loved all the dishes here. The prices are very affordable and portion sizes are good too! The Mushroom Fries are really good. They are thin with a crispy exterior just like fries, and the dry rub on the mushroom fries is super addicting to eat. The Dumplings and Chili Oil have a nice spicy and sweet flavor. The wrapping and filling are good too. The Mala Chicken Wings and the Dry Pepper Fried Tofu have a great dry seasoning. It has a two chili spice level, but I think the spice packed a good flavor kind of spicy and not the typical Szechuan "burn your tongue off spicy". The flavor and texture of both the chicken wings and the fried tofu were quite enjoyable and I kept eating them just like the mushroom fries. The Cukes and Bean Curds are a nice appetizer with so much freshness. It was nice to have some fresh veggies to balance out the other dishes. The Sesame Noodles have a super delicious nutty and sweeter flavor. The sauce coats the noodles really well and the sliced cucumbers add freshness and texture to the dish. Definitely a table favorite. The Spicy Beef Noodle Soup has so much depth of flavor in the broth and packs a spicy kick. The beef is so tender and one of the best I've had in a beef noodle soup. The Dan Dan Noodles are super flavorful as well. The nutty and garlic flavor, minced pork, and spiciness comes together so well. Just fyi, this is probably their spiciest dish on the menu, so just be careful if you're not the biggest spicy person. The restaurant has a comfortable homey ambiance. The restaurant is not too big, so be prepared to wait if you're coming around 6:30 pm or later which is peak dinner time. Try to come at 5 pm when they open if you want to avoid the rush and not have to wait. The owner and the staff were all very welcoming and checked up on us a lot. Great little place if you are looking for something delicious and a bit out of the ordinary. As a Chinese native... I was disappointed in myself for thinking that I can find authentic, good sichuan cuisine in eagle rock. The most odd mapo tofu I've ever had! Why was there so much sauce and so little tofu? The sauce was weirdly thick, overly salty. The 豆豉酱 overpowered any other flavor (ginger, scallion, chili, etc etc) that should be there would in a standard mapo tofu! The Dan Dan noodles were also odd. The sauce was mostly PEANUT butter and minced meat...real Dan Dan noodles should have sesame paste, a bunch of chili oil and other ingredients! And the noodles were a mushy mess... Honestly, just look up what these dishes should look like on Baidu (Chinese google) and compare it to the photos that have been submitted here. Not the same! Even without considering authenticity, I do not like how everything was mushy and weirdly seasoned. This was a mid restaurant pretending to represent real sichuan cuisine. Mala class is a great addition to the food scene on York Blvd! My partner and I were craving noodles and came here after seeing all the tiktoks. We ordered the Dan Dan noodles, the mala wings, and the mushroom fries. Dan dan noodle (4/5): these were perfectly nutty and packed with flavor! They were a tad bit too salty for me towards the end and the noodles were also stuck together in some parts. Mala wings (4/5): I really love the Asian fusion spin on this and thoroughly enjoyed each bite. However, it definitely could've been spicier and more numbing. The price also felt a bit steep when there are only four wings. Mushroom fries (10/5): whoever came up with this dish is an absolute GENIUS! I couldn't stop eating the fried seafood mushrooms. Dandan Noodles - 4/5 A bit on the saltier side and missing that deep, numbing mala heat that makes Szechuan food so addictive. The noodles were fine, but they didn't leave a lasting impression. I can't believe I'm just now discovering Mala Class, 7 months after opening! Ambiance: This place has a laidback, modern vibe with a clean, cozy feel. It's a small spot which creates this warm, inviting atmosphere. When we went with a group of 4 on a Saturday night, there was about an hour wait, but we walked over to Holcomb (great spot for a drink while waiting by the way). Service: The service was friendly and professional. Since it's a small space, the staff is really on top of things. Food/Drink: Mala Class doesn't serve alcohol, which means tables turnover pretty quickly. The food came out fast, and everything was delicious. We started with the mala chicken wings, cucumber salad, and mushroom fries. The wings were perfect--crispy, not too spicy at first, but the heat builds, which was just right for me. We also had the mapo tofu and dan dan noodles, both of which were SO YUM. The portions were generous, especially for the price. If you love Sichuan food, this place is a must-try. I don't leave reviews often but felt the need to leave this place 5 stars. Whoever leaves a rating less than 4 stars has lobotomized their taste buds. I haven't had a transcendent dining experience in over 2 years until here. First of all, you must dine in. People expecting an above average experience eating anything out of card board take out containers shouldn't be allowed to influence anyone's opinion. The noodles were incredible and flavorful. Followed them up with the spicey wings, they had a dry rub and my brain began to implode in ecstasy. Then I followed that with the mushroom fries not expecting much since they were out of dumplings, those also short circuited my brain due to their incredible seasoning. Then followed all that up with a second order of noodles. This was split with a good friend and was the perfect amount of food for two. Service was excellent. Atmosphere also excellent. Overall a relaxing place to just house plates of food. If there is a wait I recommend going down the street to the arcade bar and getting a whiskey shot with a pickle back to prepare you for what is to come. I ordered for pick up and only received four wings when they have given me five in person at the restaurant itself. I saw some tik toks and it looks like they give five. Went to taste the spicy beef noodle soup which was delicious but I would have been glad to see more flavors in the broth. The taste of the mala was there, on the milder side. Beef was soft and good, but it lacked the cartilage you would get elsewhere. The dumplings were fine, but the stuffing was a bit heavy and it needed more seasoning as it lost its initial sharpness after the initial few mouthfuls. The fried mushrooms were also a treat which was fried little and had a good crunch along with a tender inside. You like an awful lot of chili oil on the side. The atmosphere was low key and friendly, and the place itself was homey. A good option in the event you feel like having approachable Sichuan flavors but you are not willing to travel to SGV. Every single dish was absolutely delicious. Well seasoned and satisfying. For a group of 5 we cleaned our plates and it was noticed. It's a small modest restaurant, so prepare to wait of you have a large group, but thankfully they allowed us to put in our strategic order early. I loved it. However, my Chinese friends, more traditionalist and dedicated to the SGV, thought it was okay, but I can see why. It was more seasoned than spicy which makes sense. Mala Class is it located in Eagle Rock and those bodies could only handle so much authentic fire. No flavor was compromised for amount of blonde patrons that sat in each seat, but heat was noticeably mild The mushroom fries (7) are a great starter which a unique dry rub that's absolutely addicting. Are these healthy? Not sure, but we quickly finished two plates. Good crunch all around. The Sze Salad (9) was refreshing and delightful. There was cuts of leaves that look like potato chips, but weren't. The dumplings in chili oil (9) come with 5 and need to be eaten with the spool. We saved the drizzle to enjoy with our rice. It's on the sweeter side, but absolutely wonderful. It could be jarred and sold on its own. So amazing. The mala chicken wings (12) were small, but the crisp to meat ratio was perfect. It's a must get, but wish there was more for the price. But it was very delicious. Sesame noodles (12) were refreshing. I think sweeter as well. I liked it, but can be viewed as a filler item. The texture was great, but I would recommend the Dan Dan over this. I absolutely loved the Dan dan noodles (13). It was a good version of something so prevalent in the SGV. Strong flavor, good smooth sauce and the servers make sure it mix it well. If you had to skip something, it would be the Mapo tofu (15). I liked it with hard hitting black pepper, but the table thought the it was missing a key ingredient: mung bean. Or maybe it was reduced. I agreed, it was the weakest dish of the meal and that the tofu cubes needed to be smaller to grab all the flavor. We also got the shrimp sauce (18). There were only 6 pieces of shrimp, but there were good bites. It done well, but pretty expensive for the portion. The staff is sweet and kind. The meal was so satisfying and you can tell it's a crowd pleaser with a wait into the late evening. I beg you to dine family style. My new favorite sichuan place in LA! Came here on a Saturday around 12:15 pm and were able to park outside and grab one of the last few tables. Service was fairly quick and very friendly. We got the mushroom fries ($9), cukes and beancurd ($9), mala wings ($13), and dandan noodles ($14). Everything was spot on. The mushrooms are dusted in cumin, which is a brilliant combination of flavors and textures. The mala wings were the spiciest and a fantastic crispy texture (dry pepper rub with peppercorn) with decently juicy meat. The dandan noodles were closer to one pepper in heat instead of the two that are advertised. The sesame sauce, peanuts, and garlic flavors make it a fantastically flavorful dish without being overwhelming. I'd say the wings and fries were my favorite, with the dandan noodles not far behind. The cukes and beancurd were delicious as well and very much needed to break up the other flavors, though I don't think the dish is as stand-out on its own. I wanted Chinese food but didn't want to drive 25 min into the SGV and opted for 8 min into highland Park. I had high hopes but unfortunately Mala class won't cut it for me. The difference between the legit mom and pop Sichuan/Guizhou/Yunan spots- with neon open signs and greasy tables throwing down true heat- is worth a 30 min round trip difference. My primary issue is that the food here seems unfinished... There's ground pork/cucumber in my noodles but less than a tablespoon if that. The flavors aren't quite in balance- each dish is hyper simple- so if anything is even slightly heavy handed it's instantly noticeable. No heat or numbness whatsoever. I've been to Mala Class a few times and highly recommend it. It's gotten better every time I've gone. It's a small restaurant, probably best for groups of 4 or smaller and has a very casual ambience which, to me, is a good thing! This is where my husband and I go when we want something special and delicious in a relaxed setting. The staff are knowledgeable about the menu. Service is attentive without being rushed. Now, for the food! The Szechuan salad and wings are a must-get every time. The salad is refreshing and the dressing is rich and savory and just a little bit sweet. The wings are perfect: juicy and tender on the inside, perfectly crispy on the outside, and the seasoning is delicious. I will say the wings run hot compared to the other food items - we usually get the wings mild and everything else medium and the wings still end up the spiciest dish, probably because they have a dry rub rather than a sauce. Other items in heavy rotation for us include the dan dan noodles, mapo tofu, and dumplings. The dan dan noodles are probably my favorite in LA - the sauce is very rich and the noodles are perfectly bouncy. The mapo tofu is decadent and perfectly spicy. The dumplings are flavorful and delicious; they don't need the hot oil sauce they are served in but the sauce just takes it to the next level. The last time I went there, we tried the cucumber and bean curd - also a very refreshing dish with perfectly crunchy cukes plus chewy delicious bean curd. We've also tried the sesame noodles and hot beef noodle soup. The sesame noodles are great for cooling off when eating the spicier dishes, but I wouldn't say they're a must-get especially if you're only there as a party of two. The spicy beef soup was just okay, but there are other dishes I have tried here that seem to have improved over time, so I'd definitely try the beef noodle soup again now that they've been open a little bit longer. read more

I went with a Sichuan connoisseur from China and they said the food was average. Not bad at all, but you could get a lot better portions and quality in the San Gabriel Valley. I am actually not a fan of Sichuan style, so I was the polar opposite, but I thought the food was good for someone who doesn't like Sichuan because it was flavorful without being overpowering and spicy without burning my stomach. Service was excellent. It can get crowded, but the food comes out fairly fast and you don't have to wait that long. If you don't mind a little walk, there is plenty of free street parking in this part of Highland. I enjoyed the ambience at Mala Class. Great for dates or small groups of friends. It's not special enough for a birthday dinner, though. For a small menu it didn't offer a lot of veggie options, which is unfortunate so after two plates of fried things, we walked away feeling we'd had some elevated bar snacks. It was salty, spicy, savory from the peanut paste + minced pork + chili sauce with a touch of sourness from the preserved veggies. The wrapper was thin but chewy, the cook was more al dente which gave them a great texture. The restaurant seats around 18-20 people, so call/plan ahead if you're looking for a party larger than 2-6. The ambiance was cozy and felt like a great neighborhood restaurant. Kevin the owner is personable and will walk you through the whole menu if you're trying Sichuan food for the first time. Overall, Mala Class offers an excellent take on traditional Sichuan flavors, each dish weas multi-dimensional and made me crave more with each bite.
