We visited Jitlada because people say it's the best Thai food in LA, sometimes even in the US. Expectations were high. Unfortunately, I left disappointed. The food was just fine and quite expensive. After the meal, I did further reading to figure out why people love this place. Turns out it's only the best Thai food if you order the right thing. "The right thing" means the stuff on their specialty Southern Thai menu. And you need to order it "Thai spicy". I didn't know that, but as the customer I shouldn't have to know that! Jitlada's menu has like a hundred items. Why can't they narrow it down to just the best stuff? It should be easy to order their best food, but they make it difficult. Even if I go back, order "the right thing," and discover it really is the best Thai food in LA, I don't think I'd change my review. Restaurants should be judged by the quality of their food overall. Can you condense this My friend and I came in at around 6pm there was no wait and we ordered: Tom Yum Soup was a bit sour for my liking but the flavor was impeccable as it progressed through the night. You can taste the fresh lemon grass and galangal which pair super well after eating some of the fried fish. I would still get this but I would pair it with something a bit more heavier like the pork belly to balance out the fat. 4/5 The Papaya salad was so good as it had cashews on top instead of the usual peanuts. It was the perfect balance of sweet and sour umami flavors 5/5. Pad Thai I LOVED THIS THE MOST, it was delicious 5/5. The turmeric sea bass was interesting as the garlic added a smoky flavor and extra crunch while the sauce added a nice kick of spice. Not a single piece of meat was left behind. I will say the leftover juices from the papaya salad with some of the fish and a spoonful of rice was the perfect bite. It was like heaven in my mouth and I will be coming back to try more of their seafood options 5/5. I can normally handle heat but I've never heard of southern thai spicy. My friend warned me that their mild was pretty spicy for her. I listened to her warning and agree that their mild was spicy! A spot that has existed for so long that it's crazy I never reviewed it. I'm a frequent visitor to the classic theatres throughout Hollywood so I come by after a late night film showing for some great grub. This time I opted for wings which I somehow never tried. These were solid but the chili sauce was a little flat. Tasted like the type you'd buy in the grocery store. Which the wings also had a little more crispy. The crispy pork with noodles was a real winner. Noodles soaked up all of his flavor through the sauté. All were so tender and the bits of pork belly were like nuggets of goodness scattered around. One of the worst service experiences I've had at a restaurant. We sat there for about 10 minutes without anyone coming to take our order. I raised my hand multiple times trying to get someone's attention, but no one seemed to care. Meanwhile, some of the staff were outside chatting with what appeared to be regular customers while we were still sitting there waiting. When someone finally came to take our order, her attitude was incredibly rude and unpleasant. She acted like we were bothering her just by being there and was cold and dismissive the entire time. To make things worse, one of the dishes we ordered was never even put in. The service stayed bad throughout the entire meal. No one came to refill our water, some of the plates were not properly clean, and after we finished eating, we were once again left sitting there waiting just to get the check. It felt like we had to chase someone down for every basic part of the dining experience. The food itself was actually good, and we finished everything that did arrive. But I definitely would not call it the best Thai food in LA. There are simply too many other great Thai restaurants in the city to justify putting up with service like this. I also brought a friend here, which made the whole experience even more embarrassing and disappointing. Good food does not make up for terrible service. We walked in around 8 and had no trouble being seated. The staff were all friendly and helpful with their recommendations. We shared oxtail curry, crying tiger beef, and shrimp fried rice between 3 people. The portion sizes are on the smaller end but we found that one dish per person was a good amount to share. I recommend the Thai tea and a spicy smoothie. I got ginger and it was delicious like ginger chew candy. The crying tiger beef portion was small but it still tasted good and was perfect crispness. I would honestly get another dish that is more filling. Shrimp fried rice was delicious but there was not the most shrimp in it. I still think it's worth getting. The oxtail curry was my favorite. It was on the spicier side but extremely flavorful and the oxtail melted in your mouth. I am for sure going to get this again and recommend it. Any of their southern curries are good but the oxtail as the meat made it even better. OK, my last review saying the only thing to get there is the southern Thai last page-dishes, and having corrected my error from the last time, I stuck to that page, and it wowed me once again. Jackfruit jungle curry tofu had a wonderful sweet/sour taste; beef khua kling with a fishy sauce was like a wet "dry-rub bbq" taste, and perfect mouthfeel. I've been here a few times, but I always think about pictures after I've inhaled my food. I originally saw the restaurant on Triple G. The Thai food here is phenomenal! My fave Thai dish is Thai basil chicken. Theirs is great. The last time I had spicy basil eggplant with chicken. My niece is vegan and likes extra spicy. She ordered spicy veggie rice. Worth the wait! Had a little snafu yesterday morning as the restaurant opened an hour later due to an issue and luckily my group was not in a rush to eat. We were seated very quickly once they opened the doors and the staff paid extra attention and took care of everyone, came over to check in periodically throughout the meal without needing to flag them down. It was definitely in my top 3 drunken noodle dishes but honestly $21 was a lot for the portion size. I usually grab Thai food in OC and it's significantly cheaper with the same level of flavor. And for the record whoever made the word LARB is wrong. The phonetics is LAAB! There's No "R" in the pronunciation. Just like PHO was mispronounced LAAB should also be corrected. This restaurant was very disappointing. Not only was the service rude and lazy so were their food standards. I never complain about portions but a few main orders was about enough for a teenager kid - not adult portion. Ordered food to go for $150 and I almost believed that they gave us leftover food from someone else's plate since we ordered for pickup right before closing as they wouldn't take any more Uber Eats orders, even though it was an hour before closing so we ended up picking up. Called service on the phone after opening the order at home, but they didn't care and said to email the restaurant. I emailed and no one cared to reply for weeks. * Beef salad - Wilted lettuce, hard beef, barely any lettuce and the bottom core wasn't even chopped off the lettuce heart. They're so lazy I even wonder if they were washed properly. Have you ever gotten fries from fast food and they were all a quarter inch long? And you know that the bottom shakes & scraps right? Every single piece we got was less than half an inch and they are supposed to be 3 to 5 inches long. I feel grossed out eating here because I really do believe that they just threw some customers leftovers into our to-go order because it was late and they were extremely rude and wanted to leave and go home. The oil for the beef smelled so stale!! The salad was the same. * BEEF LAAB - ok guys here's how you tell if a restaurant is authentic. The meat is supposed to be hand chopped like CARNE ASADA pieces - not ground beef. That's cheating and no good authentic restaurant will make it like that! Look at the beef laab pics from Thai Bistro and compare to Jitlada. Big difference! 6) Chicken Satay - dry like cardboard. It's not hard to make this and the restaurant simply doesn't care anymore bc they're riding on the hyped Michelin star. If you want more tips on how to tell if a restaurant is authentic there are some dishes you can focus on and do some food forensics like I always do but this time I didn't bc my friend swore by this restaurant just bc it was a Michelin. LOOK FOR: 1. Tom Yum - it should always have the dark straw mushrooms not the white mushrooms. Bonus is you can see long stalks of lemon grass and Kaffir lime leaves. 2. The LAAB should be hand chopped pieces- rustic style like carne asada meat. If you don't see that find a restaurant that has that like at Thai Bistro. 3) Papaya salad - should be hand scored rustic not done with a peeler so all pieces are thick enough crunchy and different textures. The best Papaya salad is at Hollywood Thai. They hand score it and it's perfectly crunchy and rustic. Every bit is different but amazing. Ask for the Lao style papaya salad with blue crab. You'll love it! Way better than Thai style bc it's more savory, robust and flavorful. 4) look for dishes with the green string beans. Authentic restaurants will use the Long Bean which is skinny and wrinkly not like the regular American Green string beans. That's how you know a restaurant really pays attention to authentic details of the dish. 5) Look for sauces. The more types of chili oil and pickled chilis- the better the restaurant. I've posted pictures of exactly what we got of the beef jerky. Scraps. This was so disappointing. I will never eat here again especially being someone who is half Thai. We know our food and I do not suggest anyone who wants authentic Thai food and good service to come here. I would rather go to Thai Bistro down the street because their food looks way more authentic in the pictures and it doesn't come with an attitude and entitled staff because of a wrongly misplaced Michelin star. Even a $10 cash tip didn't even come with a thank you from the guy who prepared it. Amazing Thai restaurant in east hollywood. They don't take reservations came for dinner on a Saturday around 630pm and wait time was about 40 minutes. They have an extensive menu with hundreds of items. We ordered the crying tiger beef, mint noodles, morning glory with prawns and spicy pork fried rice. Everything was flavorful and came out fresh. Wait was about 45 min but the food was amazing so it was worth it to me! Parking is scarce in a Friday night but we were able to find street parking. Dare I say top 3 Thai places I've had in California. Dont let the 3.5 stars fool you, that's how you know this place is authentic. I came on a Saturday afternoon with friends and we came starving. It was quite packed when we walked through the door. There was only 1 server and we were situated in the corner so it was a little hard to get her attention at first. But once we placed our order, it didn't take too long for our food to came. The slow service was immediately forgotten once I had my first bite. We ordered about 6 dishes for 4 of us. That may seem like a lot but the portion sizes were not that big. Their menu is also MASSIVE and had so much variety so it was really hard to pick just a handful of dishes to try. Some of the dishes I have never even heard of but I definitely want to come back and try new things!! Okay, let's rate the dishes (no pics bc we were so hungry that I forgot): Yellow wings 2.5/5: my boyfriend ordered this bc stuffed chicken wings are his favorite but I personally am not a fan, I thought the other dishes we got were more memorable. It wasn't bad but not my cup of tea! Mango raw blue crab 5/5: I personally love a papaya/mango salad that's drenched in fish sauce (Laos style) and bonus points if it has raw crabs. Once I saw this on the menu, I knew I had to try it and I think I personally ordered the best item out of all the dishes we got. The blue crab had a good chunk of meat on it. The mangos weren't too sour, perfect texture and ripeness. It was a very refreshing salad. Crispy morning glory salad 5/5: I've never had deep fried morning glory, only steamed so this dish was unique to me! The texture was really good, perfect amount of crisp but it wasn't too heavy for it being deep fried. Def order this and the shrimp they used was plump. Spicy mint noodles (4/5): this is their pad kee mao, and you can never go wrong with ordering this dish. I loved how saucey their version is bc I find that some Thai restaurants, their version is a bit dry. Duck fried rice (3.5/5): I never thought to put duck in fried rice even though I grew up eating duck, somehow it never crossed my mind. It was good but I think I'll try something else next time. Soft shell crab curry (4/5): I've never had soft shell crab curry but my bf and I are big fans of soft shell so this was really good! All in all, I'll definitely come back to try their other dishes and I've already recommended this place to a few of my friends! read more
