Mango Sticky Rice
Joy J.

i love mangos. i love rice. and i love spiking my blood sugar. this is why thai food is my favorite cuisine. yet i've got my whole panang curry, pad see ew, and tom yum obsessions WITHOUT EVER TRYING MANGO STICKY RICH. granted, i'm always WAY TOO FULL to order dessert. they do NOT skimp on portions at thai restaurants the hospitality is unreal. but this is unacceptable some mango is my fav fruit. i got an ube mango sticky rice at a food festival one time, but it was cold and pretty standard... that was my only impression of it. NOW FLASH BACK TO HERE. i to echo park only seeking dessert and my friend SHOVED ME over to this tiny cute little establishment. little did i know my upcoming flavor explosion. the sticky rice was WARM, coconutty, sweet and absolutely melted in your mouth while still holding firm, not necessarily mushy. i almost shed a tear. it was STEAMING. and the condensed milk drizzled on top went above and beyond... it was definitely coconut that added just another level of tropical warmth ugh. and those MANGOS??? GIRL ITS APRIL, NOT SUMMER??? yet they were the sweetest, softest, most decadent mangos on planet earth. with that bit of mint, every bite had me in ecstasy... and a food coma. THIS is mango sticky rice. and i WILL be back. also, tell me why i just sat down next to Ian from Smosh. that man's been loving thai food since youtube's inception... and obviously he has impeccable taste *fangirls*

The wings are a must. Perfectly cooked, packed with flavor, and the kind of dish you keep thinking about after you leave. The rolls are massive and fresh, paired with a peanut sauce that's clearly made with care and not just an afterthought. The Pad Thai is where they really show off. The noodles have that ideal texture, not too soft, not too firm, with a balanced flavor and just the right level of spice. The crunch from the vegetables brings everything together in a way that makes each bite better than the last. The pork belly appetizer is rich and indulgent in the best way. And the Thai tea boba? Easily one of the best I've had, smooth, flavorful, and not overly sweet. Even the space itself adds to the experience. The decor is beautiful and thoughtfully done, making it feel like more than just a quick meal. If you're looking for Thai food that's both comforting and elevated, this is the spot.

Wow! Amazing Thai food and cocktails. Very busy place yet all of the staff were wonderful. The only minor complaint would be the appetizer came out with the main courses. Will definitely be coming back.

Had a great time here! The ambiance is charming and the staff and bartenders are so nice! They recommended us to get the Thai tea gimlet which was sooo delicious. We also got the panang curry fries which hit the spot. Shout out to Erika who served us!!

Vibes? Cozy. Service? (Specifically by Erika at Spirit House) Literally felt like part of the family. Food? (Particularly served by Erika the bartender) DELICIOUS. Drinks? (By none other than the world's best mixologist Erika). I've never had anything more scrumptious! Do urself a favor and come to Sticiy Rice and make sure Erika's taking care of you for the bestest of times!

I arrived from San Diego and stopped by this small restaurant on East Sunset Blvd in Echo Park with my daughter around 4:00 PM. It wasn't busy, but we stood waiting for about five minutes with no greeting or acknowledgment from anyone on staff. I finally approached a female employee (long silver earrings) to ask if someone could help us. Her response was unbelievably rude--she said she was "busy," in a tone that made it clear she didn't want us there. I even asked, frankly, "Do you want us to leave?" and she replied, "I don't care." Then she told us to leave. We were literally kicked out. I understand being understaffed. I understand stress during a shift. But disrespecting customers and telling them to leave--when the restaurant wasn't even packed--is unacceptable. I left shocked and uncomfortable, and honestly, afraid to ever return or even pass by again. This was one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had.!!! I am a very fair and professional reviewer and today was a sad day for me and my 13 year old daughter!!!

Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodles) - mild spicy level with tofu

No wait for a table for two on a Wednesday evening. Drunken noodles were fantastic - soft, chewy, and great flavor. Mild spicy level was definitely SPICY, but overall 10/10. Not pictured: chicken satay skewers. Wasn't a big fan of the peanut dipping sauce, but the chicken had a nice char. Perfect spot for a late night Thai craving. Will definitely come again!

Went in for a late dinner and was not disappointed! The ambiance's was giving groovy vibes. We ordered Thai chicken wings as an appetizer. They were perfectly fried and seasoned well. The chicken was juicy. We ordered steak pad siew, shrimp pad siew and chicken pad Thai. All our dishes came out sizzling hot. All the dishes were so delicious. I can't forget our server. They were so nice and attentive. Come check out this place when in Echo Park.

Our group came here as this was one of the places our friend wanted to try, but unfortunately, it wasn't what we had expected. Upon getting there, we were immediately seated, but by the time we left, there was a line of people waiting. Would highly recommend making reservations if you stop by. Each of us decided to order our own dish and then share a couple of sides. What I ordered: 1. Chicken Pad Thai - was not impressed. Noodles felt like they were drenched in sauce and it wasn't spicy at all. Also, it was kind of pricey for such a small portion. Unfortunately, I have had better pad thai elsewhere. What each of us shared: 1. Papaya Salad - Super mild and not spicy compared to other thai restaurants. If you like spicy foods, I wouldn't recommend this as it was more refreshing than spicy. We didn't realize it until the dish came, but we were surprised by the wedge of cabbage on the side. It's not something you typically see when ordering papaya salad, so we weren't sure if we were suppose to create wraps and eat it. 2. The Sticky Rice wings: Super juicy and came out piping hot! The batter on the wings were still crunchy and when paired with the sauce, fried basil and peppers, it was super good. Was the highlight of everyone's meal. Overall, we weren't impressed by the papaya salad and what we had individually ordered. If we were in the area, we'd might stop by, but definitely not worth the trip from SGV.

Yellow Curry sticky rice Thai tea gimlet

Got seated quickly on a Saturday evening with no reservation. Was very busy, but in a good way, wasn't too loud or anything! The interior is very chic! We got waters right away but had to ask for a server to take our order. We got the egg rolls (veggie) which were to dieeee for! So flavorful even w/o the sauce! 10/10 freshness and flavor. All the food came out pretty quickly. The curry... don't get me started!! 10/10 I added sticky rice instead of steamed rice which I believe compliments it better. The Thai tea wasn't what I was used to, I would've like it to be creamier and richer. Had a sweet butter taste. The Gimlet was very lime forward, not a bad thing. But overall we would return! Great atmosphere. THEY DO NOT TAKE CASH!! Only cash tips

Pineapple Fried Rice

Decided to come here after playing tennis! Wow! I don't regret choosing this place! It's sooooo delicious! Everything we ordered was good, but my favorite was the panang curry, poured over the pineapple fried rice. The restaurant is cute, small, and can get busy at peak hours. Parking might also be a little rough.

After an evening of shenanigans with some lovely friends during the week, we found ourselves in the Echo Park area at about 10pm and most of us haven't eaten dinner yet. Upon some yelping, we see that Sticky rice was something that we were all craving: a bit of food and a bit of sweets to end the night. Despite coming near closing, we were able to get our takeout order squeezed in before they started closing for the night! Thank you again staff for being accommodating! Haven't had pad thai in a long time, even after driving it back to my friends place for almost 30 mins it was still soo good. Practically cleaned the whole plate. The restaurant has a lot of personality to it, I mean it in a good way. It's definitely a good dinner hang out place at night to meet with friends and catch up. Would come again. Parking wasn't too terrible, there's parking lots, with kiosks. Street parking is also viable if you're lucky too.

Penny J.

Decent place. I wish I could give 1/2 a star more for ambiance. It was pretty good like the pad see ew with tofu and pineapple fried rice with tofu were delish. But like just good enough not incredible. Really cute inside tho

The regular menu is quite expensive with the cheapest at $17 for appetizer and salad options and most expensive at a whooping $80. The lunch menu was more affordable but still on the pricey side $21-$32 with add on options. The waitress was taking our orders and what surprised me was with my co-worker ordered the pad see ew and the waitress asked her how spicy she wants it. I was aw shocked. I'm not a Thai food expert but I do know pad see ew is a noodles dish that's offers a sweet soy sauce flavor. Never served spicy. I didn't get to try the dish but when I asked my co worker how it taste she said it was spicy and not sweet at all. I'm not sure that was an authentic pad see ew. I ordered from the lunch menu and got the tumeric chicken, with steamed vegetables and paid extra $7 to substitute for a papaya salad. I asked for #2 spice level but it was not spicy at all. Other co workers said they asked for medium but it was way too spicy. So it looks like their spicy levels are inconsistent. I'm not sure how this restaurant can justify the prices with the quality they are serving. Probably won't be back. Service was mediocre. Didn't offer to refill our waters. Parking is metered parking or paid lot.

I felt like I came to eat and my mom's house. They take Debit Card and Apple Pay WITH a pin only. I forgot my wallet and paid with Apple Pay. It did not have a place for tip which made me feel awful. At the end I apologized and she was like "it's ok, next time." And she was genuinely fine with it. She reassured me not to worry about it. So I'm determined to come back to tip her because if anybody deserved a tip it was her. I ordered Pad Thai with tofu- I like to order peanut sauce on the side and the woman found it interesting and struck a non judgmental conversion about it. I could really tell she was genuinely curious. This was my favorite dish. It was good. I also ordered spicy fried rice with tofu and spicy panang curry with vegetables. I chose 4 out of a 6 for spicy and it was not spicy at all for me. The rice was fine, nothing extraordinary and nothing bad. The panang curry was yummy. I don't know if it's regional but it was very light in taste and light in thickness. BUT I enjoyed it for what it was. Felt like I had gotten home made chicken soup or something like that comforting and not overly processed. Maybe it's because I ordered it with no protein and just vegetables. I ordered a lot of food so I explained to her that I was going to eat some and take the rest to go. When she brought the food she brought it nicely packed without a bag. She also brought me a real plate and utensils to eat here. She let me know that when I was ready she'd bring a bag which I thought was thoughtful. She also made sure to say "take your time, no need to rush. We close at 8" and it was 5pm. Again, it felt genuinely nurturing, she wanted to make sure I felt taken care of and welcomed. It meant a lot because I was frazzled from forgetting my wallet and from having a hard day at work. This was my first time here and it won't be my last. There is a small lot on site. This place is by far my favorite Thai restaurant and that's why it's so disheartening to write this…read morereview. I have written at least 2 glowing reviews of the restaurant in the past and wish this could be one of them, but it's not. Over the last 4-5 days I have tried no less than 2 dozen times to call the restaurant during proper business hours to order food for pick-up as I often do. The phone rang and rang to no avail. I live too far from the restaurant to just pop up and place an order so I rely on calling ahead. I have been a customer of this restaurant for at least the last 9 years and have almost never had the aforementioned experience. Though I do recall not being able to get a call through several times on one or two occasions in the relatively distant past. Today I was finally able to get a call through and began placing my order which includes shrimp. I ALWAYS request the tail (with shells) to be removed from the shrimp as I find it quite difficult to enjoy my meal if I'm constantly having to pick off shells with my hands. It's unsanitary and messy. Removing the tails from 15-20 shrimp prior to adding to an entree or soup should take no more than 60 seconds and that's if one is moving at a glacial pace. However, today I was told that the kitchen was too busy to honor my request. I assured the lady taking my order than I was a loyal customer and make this request will every order I place and it is always honored. She repeated her claim that the kitchen was too busy and refused to do it. I cancelled my order and ended the call. Now I usually order food from the restaurant 4-5 times a month and usually spend about $65 each time not including tip. That is approximately $325 per month of my hard earned money that I give to this restaurant in exchange for great food and service. I am appalled and quite upset that having been a loyal customer for almost a decade and spending as much money there as I do per month that they could at least honor my patronage by simply taking an additional 60 seconds in the kitchen to make my meal more enjoyable. Her refusal to do such a minuscule task has deeply soured my experience with Hoy-Ka not to mention the fact that I could not reach the restaurant for almost a week by phone for no apparent reason. I will not be going back to this restaurant until they rectify this situation.

Each time I've come the waitstaff has been super friendly, and the food amazing. So, when planning a little birthday lunch for my mom's 81st birthday, this was one of the first places I thought of. My mom lives in south LA and we live in the valley, so after picking her up, we wouldn't have to travel far to eat. Although we planned to arrive to the restaurant at 2, traffic was horrible and we arrived at 230pm. After looking for parking, I dropped the fam off at 2:40 so they could sit and look at the menu while I found parking. I get a text from my husband saying they closed at 3 so hurry. This was news to me, as I thought they closed at 5. I found parking and rushed in at 2:48, to see my family outside the restaurant. Perplexed, I went in to ask if we could still eat, as it wasn't yet 3pm. No wait staff came to the front to greet me, so I walked in a bit and asked the waiter if it was okay to eat. The waiter said we close in ten. I said I thought the website said you closed at 5. I must have read it wrong. I understand, but it's not 3 and we came a bit of a distance and it's my mom's 81st birthday. The waiter, whose name is Jack, offered to ask the kitchen if they would still make food. I said yes please would you ask? While Jack was asking, another waiter asked me if I had been helped. I told him yes, that Jack was asking the kitchen if we could still have lunch. This waiter says, we're closing in 10. I'd like to have lunch too. And walks away. Yes, with shade. Jack returns and says it's fine as long as we can order within a few minutes of getting the menu. I say great and we all come in. The 2nd waiter takes our order with the least amount of personality he possibly can, and the whole lunch is slightly awkward and we're not able to truly enjoy ourselves with the feeling of "we better hurry up and eat" lingering. By the time we ordered and received our food (which was delicious as usual) , there were still 4 other groups of customers there, and we actually left the restaurant within a minute or two after the last customers before us. Also, no one came around to ask how our food was and if we needed anything. I'm giving 3 stars because this experience didn't quite sit right with me. Yes, it was near closing, but your doors weren't closed and there was no sign saying last call/order at 2:45 or anything like that. I feel like once the kitchen approved making our lunch, customer service should have been at its peak for paying customers, who gave no attitude and tried to be as polite with the ask as possible. It was not. I still tipped 25%, because Jack (waiter 1) was polite and my 81 old mama who I was celebrating raised me that way, but I'm not sure I'll patronize them again.

The Pad Thai was the best I've had outside of Thailand. Extremely well balanced, not too sweet, not too tangy, not drowning in sauce, just perfectly done with great noodle texture and loaded with shrimp. The Pad Kee Mao was so flavorful. Smoky, spicy, full of flavor, and had that proper "wok hei" char that makes noodles addictive. The Pad See Ew was equally rich and savory, and deeply satisfying. We also got the turnip omelette (Kai Jeow with preserved radish) and it blew my mind, honestly. It is so simple, but packed with flavor. Somehow one of the best egg dishes I've ever had. The morning glory with pork was another standout, super fresh, garlicky, and cooked perfectly. Everything came out hot, portions were generous, and the whole table went silent because the food is too good to talk through lol. We got the raw shrimp salad, spicy catfish and bbq pork over rice. The raw shrimp "salad" is probably the best thing we've ate, but the chili sauce was over powering and couldn't really taste the freshness of the shrimp. And I feel like there could've been saw garlic to go along with it, but nope, just decorative cabbages that is not edible. As for the bbq pork over rice, the sausage was good and the crispy pork too. But the BBQ pork itself was HORRIBLE I literally spit it out. It tasted like old refrigerated dry meat, barely edible. And then the spicy catfish, the portion was so small, it looked like someone ate half of it. The pieces very tiny and it was so dry it tasted like it was refried. The spicy sauce didn't help much. And I overheard the table next to us waited around 30 mins for their dishes. Overall, I'll not be coming back here. There are much better Thai spots than this. Not to mention the parking is horrible as it was valet only on a Saturday.

Instead of the customary flat wide rice noodles, this dish came out with pad thai noodles, which were clumpy, too starchy, and slightly undercooked. - When we asked our server about the noodles, she said the kitchen ran out of flat wide noodles, which are usually served with the dish. She said "when they run out, they'll throw whatever in there, these noodles or sometimes even vermicelli." What?! Girl, no. We asked her why the lack of the key ingredient wasn't mentioned to us when we ordered and she said because she didn't know either. - The restaurant took 20%, or roughly $5 off of this $30 pad kee mao dish that we didn't even eat. The meat wasn't good quality either. Sadly, we won't be back.
