I came to Amiguita with high expectations, but unfortunately left pretty underwhelmed. The restaurant is relatively small and was very quiet when we arrived, with only a couple of other tables being served. We started with the heart of palm salad with fennel, tomato, avocado, and radish. The portion was quite small, and I could barely taste the dressing, so it lacked the brightness and flavor I was expecting. The shrimp appetizer was relatively good, although with about six shrimp, it felt overpriced for what it was. The Caribbean moules frites were probably the better dish of the evening. The mussels were good, and the aji amarillo coconut chupe and yuca fries were an interesting twist, but overall, nothing really stood out. I had particularly high hopes for the fire-roasted red snapper, but unfortunately it seemed undercooked and was also lacking in flavor. However, the rice was the highlight of this otherwise underwhelming experience.

Service was great overall, and I can definitely see the vision and the audience the restaurant is catering to. As a Dominican, I think I came in expecting a little more authenticity and depth in the food itself. The standout of the night was easily the red snapper with tostones, absolutely delicious and probably the strongest dish we had. The music and drinks also really helped create a fun atmosphere. That said, a few dishes fell short for me. The short rib arrived cold, and the flavor profile wasn't as bold as I was hoping for. The pollo y plátano relleno also caught me off guard because it wasn't what I expected at all. The beans unfortunately tasted very plain, almost like canned beans that were simply reheated. Most of the food came out closer to room temperature, so I'm not sure if there was a delay getting dishes to the table. One thing I also noticed was that for an Afro-Caribbean restaurant, the front-of-house staff lacked much visible Caribbean or Black representation aside from the host. It stood out to me given the culture the restaurant is inspired by. I will say, though, I respect the chef for building a stylish restaurant around his Dominican heritage and creating a space that clearly resonates with a broader LA crowd. I'd still come back to give it another shot, especially to try the mofongo since it wasn't available during this visit.

Great food! Highly recommend the short rib entree and the rice dish with mussels, olives and shrimp. Both well cooked, seasoned and balanced. For desert, the banana tiramisu is perfection! Service was hospitable, music was lively, intimate lighting and quaint restaurant space. Wine selection was good. I had a beautiful Matt crutchfield mixed blend, it was bright, served chilled. Downside: Parking is really tough to come by; there's no valet, the lot is shared with several other businesses so prepare for street parking only on an extremely busy part of silver lake. Our reservation was supposed to be at 7:00 pm. My friend and i arrived early. I paid for the first meter spot i could find, but due to parking limitations she was left spending 15 minutes just circling the area multiple times for parking.

Had one of my favorite dinners of the year here. Everything was so flavorful and always felt like it had a special twist on a dish that I won't be able to find anywhere else. Vibes are immaculate and I can't wait to come back. The team was so knowledgeable and passionate about their plates & bevs - you can tell they love it as well!

The atmosphere is usually chill, which is another reason I enjoyed coming here so often. The food is genuinely delicious. I've had the salmon, and I'm a big fan of the wings and the juices. I used to come here regularly, and I liked the place enough that I even chose them to cater an event for my job. I gave them a specific headcount and explained how much food we would need. They assured me that everything would be taken care of, so I trusted them and put a lot of hype behind the restaurant. Unfortunately, the catering experience was a major disappointment. Not only was our order late, but there was barely enough food for everyone. After being clear about the number of people attending and trusting their team to properly prepare for the event, it felt like they completely dropped the ball. I had recommended and hyped up this place, only for the experience to be subpar and for several things to go wrong. It honestly felt like they played in my face, especially after assuring me that everything was handled. I would have given this place five stars based on the food and my previous experiences, but that catering situation left such a sour taste in my mouth that I haven't returned in quite some time. Loyalty should mean something, and it's difficult to continue supporting a business when you don't feel respected or valued as a customer. The food is still delicious, and I truly enjoyed this place for a long time. But after that experience, I don't think I'll be coming back. I'm sorry, because I really wanted to continue supporting them.

Wow! What a hidden gem in the SGV!…read more Both of my parents are from the Caribbean, so finding a local spot that truly gets Caribbean food right is a real treat. My mom ordered the oxtail, and my dad had the curry chicken. They both agreed it was the closest they've had to authentic, home-cooked Caribbean food since leaving home. I also took home a Jamaican beef patty and a chicken patty, and I tried them the next day. They were absolutely delicious! The service was excellent, and the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is located in a unique food hall featuring cuisines from around the world, creating a lively, social atmosphere with plenty of energy while still being a comfortable place to enjoy a meal. I tried some griot and thought it could have marinated longer. The portions felt very huge. The service here is really friendly and accommodating. The food came put after not too long of a wait and it was hot. The space is cool. It looks like an old diner. There's konpa playing in the background and games like Uno & Dominos available if you want to play. We also got two Haitian beef patties to go. They're legit! Came with pikliz and another sauce I never had before, it was green with a bit of spice and tang. The main downside is the location. This area is not familiar to us at all, and we don't normally eat (for us) exotic cuisine. But, we were in the mood to try something new, so we stopped here. It's a colorful, cheerful little place. I think there are only like 4 tables. Apparently, it is mostly takeout. This became evident when our food was "served". We ordered a large two-meat plate and two large fried chicken plates. The two meats were "brown stew chicken" and curry goat. The meat is served in thick savory gravy/sauce. The "plates" are served with rice and fried plantains. The brown stew chicken was good. The curry goat was really good. Here's where the experience really veered sharply from our normal dining experience. The "plates" were served in takeout fold-over boxes with plastic forks. The meat itself was pretty much all adhered to bones. It was tender and delicious, but eating with our hands doesn't come naturally. So, I asked for a knife, and the sweet woman who takes the orders looked at me and said they don't have knives, and that we "just have to dig down into it". Indeed. She did give me a second plastic fork though, which I used. Nice workers. Authentic food. Huge portions. New experience which we all enjoyed.

After craving Jamaican food for what feels like forever, I finally decided to search Yelp on my way…read morehome from working in LA and came across The Taste of the Caribbean in Long Beach - and wow, this hit the spot in a way I've been missing for too long. For context, I've always loved Jamaican food and even have family who make incredible, authentic dishes, but I haven't had anything close to that in a year. So my expectations? High. My craving? Even higher. I ordered the jerk chicken dinner with peas & rice and cabbage medley, and some plantains - to go. First off, the service was amazing. The woman who helped me was genuinely warm and welcoming, and you can tell she cares about what she's serving. When I ordered, she asked if I wanted the jerk sauce on the side and made sure I was okay with the spice level when I said no. That attention to detail matters. The food came out quickly (it was mid-afternoon and not busy), and everything stayed warm all the way home--which is always a win for takeout. Now let's talk about the food: The portion was generous, the flavors were on point, and everything tasted fresh. The jerk chicken had that perfect smoky, spicy kick - exactly what I was hoping for. The rice and peas and cabbage medley were a great balance to the heat, and the plantains were sweet and perfectly cooked. I did notice another review complaining about the spice level being too high... and honestly, I had to laugh a little. Have you had jerk chicken before? It's supposed to be spicy - that's the whole point. Personally, that comment is part of what made me choose this place, and it delivered. If you don't like spice, jerk might not be your thing - but I'm sure there are milder options if you ask. Bonus: they offer online ordering and delivery through Uber Eats and Postmates, which makes it even easier to get your fix. Overall, this place brought back the flavors I've been missing for so long. I'll absolutely be back - and probably sooner rather than later.
