We did the tasting menu and did add the extra items, and we had a wine pairing as well. I'm always curious to see how wine pairs with Asian or Asian influenced flavors. The food was excellent, and I think you can definitely taste the Taiwanese influence in there. There were many flavors that tasted familiar, though certainly presented differently. The decor was modern, open, airy, and had some lovely art elements. I was the most impressed with the service - the staff was happy to chat about their story and the thoughtfulness that went into the food and beverages, and one realized I needed to charge my phone and brought me a charger. Thanks for a memorable birthday celebration.

A bit challenging to find but a fantastic meal! One of the best I have had. The tasting menu was excellent. Although at a two-Michelin Star price, it was worth it. Every course was outstanding, but my favorite was the rockfish in sweet and hot soup. The wine pairings were perfectly chosen. Perfect service. I highly recommend Kato!

Huge congratulations to Kato on earning their second Michelin star, as it is thoroughly well-deserved. From their commitment to sourcing exceptional California ingredients and supporting in-state food suppliers to their world-class hospitality, every detail made for an unforgettable evening celebrating my wife's birthday. We had an 8:00 PM reservation on Friday, but showed up early at 7:30 PM. They were able to seat us promptly, which we thoroughly appreciated. We were placed in the back room away from the main dining area, giving our meal a delightfully comfortable, intimate feel. The entire prix fixe menu was phenomenal, but adding the caviar-topped Hokkaido uni is non-negotiable. We started with drinks, including a dry martini that was crisp and executed perfectly, and selected a 1998 bottle of Napa Syrah that drank beautifully throughout the night. The duck main dish was extraordinary and was cooked even better than the duck we tried in Shanghai earlier this year in April, though that is certainly no knock against the food in China because Kato's execution was simply that remarkable. The team treated my wife to a slice of sesame cake to celebrate her special day, and the Peruvian coffee at the end was a complete sleeper hit. On our server's recommendation, I drank it black, and it was astonishingly good, making it one of the best cups of coffee I have ever had at a restaurant. Our main server was jovial, friendly, and instantly made us feel comfortable. The service throughout was highly attentive without ever feeling stiff or overbearing. The entire experience took almost three hours, but we took our time and did not rush. It was an exceptional dining experience from start to finish, and we will definitely be back.

Came here for a birthday dinner and had a wonderful time. Upscale Taiwanese food? Don't mind if I do! It's tucked away from the busier crowd being at the Row DTLA / Smorgasborg area. I actually really like this because they have a parking structure that is affordable + you can shop around depending on your reservation time. You won't see a large sign out front and may pass it when walking around (I know I did the first time) but be sure you bookmark it! We came during Sunday dinner service and were seated immediately. The staff here is well put together and in sync from the moment you walk in, go to the bathroom, and up to when you leave. Each time you leave they don't just fix your napkin but they replace it. Decor is minimal but I liked the ambiance. The bathroom is a little darker than expected though. haha As for the food, we did the tasting menu and I really enjoyed the variety of proteins with the fish, duck, quail, and more. The first entrees were really refreshing and I enjoy that the menu changes seasonally so they really cater to using the freshest and in season ingredients. Loved the fois gras/milk roll and the desserts the most but I thought the tasting menu was creative with presentation and how you are supposed to eat it. They even have some additions you can order with your meal ahead of time so they can plan in between the standard items. We didn't try them this time around but I am curious to come back during another season to see the menu they present. Waiters were always quick to refill glasses, offer wine recommendations, and clean up. We didn't try the cocktails this time around but they looked really interesting and even have a pairing you can order with your tasting. It was a nice touch to know the art is an homage to art from his family and it was a nice surprise to get some tea to go as a gift.

Delicious food and exceptional service. This should be a 5 star meal, but I think it's a bit overpriced. At $325 for the pre fixe, you might expect some premium protein and maybe some caviar. While the sea trout and quail were expertly prepared, these still don't really justify the price. We added a lobster and a caviar course, which brought the price close to $400 per person before drinks. Yikes!

We celebrated my husband's birthday with their ten-course (two add-ons) pre-fixe menu, and it was an excellent experience! We've been to plenty of Michelin-rated restaurants, and Kato was the first one to live up to this award. The fresh vegetables in the Liangcai were one of my favorites. It was my first time trying a century egg done with a quail egg, and I now understand why they are a delicacy. The yolk was creamy, and the whites had a good gelatinous chew. Regardless of the green-blueish hue, the funkiness was subtle. The porridge in the Xifan was tasty! The sea urchin in the Youtiao was creamy and was the perfect savory donut! I would order a dozen if I could. Their beverages were also delicious! I had a couple of glasses of their Matcha Citron mocktail - so refreshing! I also had a cup of their pour-over coffee during the dessert portion. The hospitality was top-notch, no notes! They played a lot of Nujabes, which made the ambiance relaxing. Our dinner was pricey but worth it because we had an incredible experience and superb food!

Came here for my birthday dinner with my husband and it was a perfect change from sushi omakase. Greeted by staff, seated by the window, and ambiance was not too quiet but not too loud either. You will never hear the anyone in the kitchen yelling (the Bear reference ) Each plate was carefully crafted and explosion of flavors that we grew up with, but elevated x10000. We didn't get any add-ons to our tasting menu so I'm sure we missed out on it, but we were so full at the end already. I definitely would recommend this place to everyone and come back again!

We had a lovely dinner at Kato but found the actual dining experience to fall a bit below the mark. Food was generally good and there were some great elements such as the quail and the trout, which were cooked just perfectly. However, the rest of the dishes were not very memorable. We both enjoyed the vintage wine pairing and I discovered a champagne that I really enjoyed through the program. The staff are nice but service itself is not very polished and a little choppy despite being so well-staffed.

I've heard so much about Kato over the last few years as some of my friends' favorite restaurant here. I finally go to try for Valentine's Day and came away happy. Reservation: For Valentine's Day, I did opt to reserve this as soon as possible when reservations opened up via OpenTable. There was an option to 'enable notifications for openings' which was also useful. Food: Overall, this was a really good tasting menu that went into Chef Yao's childhood and learnings growing up in the SGV. I thought it was classy with nice twists. Also appreciated the restaurant accommodating my current dietary restrictions well (can't eat mostly raw food) with good replacements where possible or warning of where we can't switch out items. There were two supplementary items and in order to get them, the whole table does need to partake as a heads-up. Also a special shout-out to the newly appointed dessert chef, Erica Chan. Her desserts were creative, playful, and surprising. Here are a few of our highlights: *Sablefish/Jiucengta Chao Geli: Was excellent - mixed with basil, rice wine, soy paste, and geoduck. Loved the textures, the presentation, and the flavor. The seafood here is strong and loved how the waiters always mentioned where the items are from. *Suanchu Yu: Another fantastic fish dish. This one funny enough had some of the best snap peas that apparently came into season early due to the weather. Really felt almost designed to spotlight the snap peas which was surprising! *Zaocan: A surprising add for Valentine's Day and a play on breakfast. Loved the soup in particular made out of soy milk and filled with seafood. It almost was a bit much at first but by the last sip, was perfect. Loved how the sticky bread also came into play in two dishes. *Fan Lizhi: Our favorite dessert of the night. So, so surprising and learned what Cherimoya was. It came off as a simple sorbet but in actuality was layered with cherimoya slices, mandarin oranges at the bottom, and buffeted by flavored soda. It was such a fascinating dish all around and wanted so much more afterwards. *Zhou: Another fantastic dessert made out of parsnip. I remembered having another parsnip dessert elsewhere but found this one to just be delightful all-around. A crepe made with parsnip cream, a parsnip crisp on top (I believe?), and parsnip ice cream. It almost bordered on being too sweet but think it was so well balanced by the last bite. Also, we appreciated the special dragonfruit cake we received to celebrate our engagement and hand-written card. We even got two gifts leaving the restaurant - a canned special espresso drink and another iteration of the cake. Service: Service was fantastic. Everyone was super friendly, laid back, and easy to chat with. We had offers to take our jackets for storage. Our waiter Fernando was super knowledgable and easy to chat with. And the other staff that came by were all friendly and kind. Interior: Super minimalist and clean. Almost the whole restaurant has some sort of vantage point into the open kitchen. We noted it was surprisingly pretty quiet. The acoustics of the Parking: Parking is super easy in the ROW DTLA parking lot. Super spacious and not hard to find parking. Make sure to bring your parking ticket with you to get validated as you'll most likely go over the 2 free hours of parking. Our total bill with two mocktails came out to be about $1K for two people as a heads-up to those looking into the restaurant. Thank you to everyone at Kato for making it a memorable V-Day!

The service and ambiance were amazing but the food is a little lacking in comparison (still good food though)! My friend and I chose the bar tasting menu with the mocktail flight to pair with the food and our favorite was probably the first course which is basically sashimi but called liangmian, cold noodle. Everything else after that was good (especially the soup) but didn't carry the wow factor. Yes it was fresh and well presented but it just felt performative more than anything because I'm used to these foods as a Chinese person. On that note, we also thought the desserts were a little too sweet for us. I think those who are not exposed to Asian cuisine everyday would definitely be able to appreciate it more than me. The mocktails paired well with each dish for the most part but everything was just acidic leaning. So think sour, tart, muted flavors. I do wonder how the alcoholic drinks would pair with each dish. What will please every customer is their service. Very attentive and friendly. You can tell the restaurant is detailed, providing wet wipes for each course that requires your hands. My phone was dying so I asked if they had a charger and they brought me a portable charger (I was pleasantly surprised)! I think the vibes are great, especially for couples!

Outstanding Service, Beautiful Space, but the Food Didn't Quite Justify the Price We booked a birthday dinner for two at Kato and were excited to experience one of Los Angeles' most celebrated Michelin-starred restaurants. As fans of Asian-inspired cuisine, we were looking forward to creative flavor combinations and a memorable tasting menu. The evening started with a small scheduling mishap on my part--I had booked from a different time zone and accidentally mixed up our reservation time. Thankfully, the maître d' was incredibly gracious and accommodated a change, which we greatly appreciated given we were driving from Orange County and battling Saturday evening traffic into Downtown LA. Kato's location in the ROW DTLA complex is impressive, and the restaurant itself is stunning. The industrial design is warm and inviting, with personal touches from the chef and a full view of the kitchen that adds to the Michelin-star experience. The cocktail program was excellent--creative, balanced, and delicious. As for the tasting menu, the meal leaned more seafood-forward than I expected. Everything was technically well executed and beautifully presented, but surprisingly few dishes left a lasting impression. The menu felt cohesive, though many courses blended together by the end of the evening. The standout moments were: * The squab was outstanding. Meaty, well roasted. * The duck course, served with foie gras, truffle, and warm seeded bread. Spreading the foie gras onto the bread and pairing it with a bite of duck was absolutely heavenly. * The desserts, especially the Suannai, a tart Meyer lemon meringue creation accented with mint and osmanthus. As someone who loves bright, acidic desserts, this was easily my favorite dish of the night. * The service, which was impeccable throughout. The staff were friendly, attentive, and professional, keeping the meal moving at a comfortable pace while always seeming to appear exactly when we needed water, another drink, or assistance. We also opted for the Jinsha lobster supplement at an additional $55 per person. Unfortunately, this was the biggest disappointment of the evening. The portion was surprisingly small, and I struggled to detect the salted egg flavor that was supposed to define the dish. By the time drinks, taxes, and service charges were added, dinner approached $550+ per person. While that's not unusual for a Michelin-starred tasting menu in Los Angeles, I left feeling that the overall experience didn't quite justify the cost. I'm glad I finally had the opportunity to try Kato. The service, atmosphere, and a handful of dishes were excellent. However, considering the price point and the fact that most of the menu didn't leave a strong impression, it's probably not a restaurant I would return to. For those seeking polished service and a refined dining experience, it's worth trying once--but it didn't become a personal favorite.

My previous review was glowing because I'm such a big fan of this restaurant. Not a place I would be able to frequent for the full tasting menu, but when I partook in said tasting menu, it was special. My most recent visit didn't change my opinion on the food and ambiance - they're both S tier in my book. However, I just want to reiterate how great the service is/ was. I came in here right around opening to grab a couple of drinks before having dinner in another restaurant located at 'The Row'. I didn't want to take up the bar seat for too long (because they do a tasting menu there as well and I believe you can order some items a la cart) But the bartender and the host couldn't have been more hospitable. As a matter of fact, when it came time for me to head over to my dinner reservation, the hostess walked me over there with an umbrella because it was raining outside. How cool is that? (my memory for names is the worst, so I forgot the name of the bartender, but I think the hostess that walked me over is Lily(?)) During my visit, I had the bourbon 'Milk Punch' - I was a huge fan from the time I ordered it during my last visit where I had dinner here. I also ordered 'Jungle Bird' - their take on kind of a fun tiki beverage. Both cocktails were really delicious and well crafted with balance. Hoping to come back soon to have more drinks and order some bites at the bar. I think you still need to make a reservation for the bar area, but if you get in right at opening, they are more than happy to accept / accommodate walk ins.

For an 8 course fancy pre fixe you actually get full! In general the individual dishes are larger in portion size so a hungry male will be full by dinners's end. Lots of flavors in all the dishes as consistent with taiwanese inspired cooking. My favorite was the uni caviar donut (an additional $45 dish you can order on top of the pre fixe) and the trout soup dish. You are served 3 desserts and my favorite was the plum cherry ice. Highly recommendes and delicious. The entire experience will take 2.5 to 3 hours but enjoyable every second!

    Ask the Community - Kato

Is the tasting menu price per a person?

Yes. The Bar has a less expensive tasting menu with less courses.

Are reservations required for the bar?

The best idea is to make a reservation at the Bar to make sure you're seated. They offer a Bar Tasting Menu which is wonderful but also snacks and drinks too.

    Does the price include gratuity?

There's an 18% service charge. It says gratuity accepted but not expected above that. I just rounded up my bill.

How big are the alcohol-free flight drinks? Or how many drinks do they include?

I assume the # of drinks depends on the current menu - when we dined here, they had 9 menu items that include 2 desserts (you can pay for an extra wagyu entree to make a total of 10) & 8 drinks (9 if you get the wagyu entree). Size = just right for…

    Are kids allowed?

On their website, under the reservation section, they have this to say: "Out of consideration for other diners, we do not permit infants, toddlers or young children in the dining room."

What's the difference with bar vs seating dining prices? When booking it's 145 with bar vs 225 for seating?

The bar seating is fewer courses and sat at the bar. I believe they stop bar seatings after 7pm so limited slots for that one

Does anyone know if Candace is still there?

    Last name? There are two...

What is the corkage fee pls?

Don't you love when people answer questions with "I don't know?" Thanks for the help, buddy! $75 per…

What is the dress code? Can I get away with nice jeans & collared shirt?

You will be fine. Ton of ppl wear shorts and sandals...

When do reservations for May open up?

You can book reservations via Resy. Sat reservations are difficult to get, but turn on an alert in Resy if something opens up (if it does, you need to jump on it right away).

I unfortunately forgot to cancel my reservation before their cutoff. Does anyone know how strict they are with their cancellation fee (I.e., $195/guest)? Or other advice on cancellations, thanks!

Have you been to Nobu before?

Would this place be okay to bring a toddler?

    Definitely not.

I want to make a reservation. The site says that reservations open the 2nd week of the month prior. What day of the week and at what time do reservations open? I feel like I keep missing the drops.Thanks.

They open for April reservation in March 15th I believe.

Did they move locations? On Yelp it says they're located at their original location in Santa Monica but their website lists a downtown address.

They moved to dtla Instagram @katorestaurant 777 Alameda St building 1 Suite 114 Los Angeles

Does the staff still wear masks?

    Yes, they all do

Are they open for dine in yet?

Yes. I ate there in June 2021 and they had indoor and outdoor seating options.

Does anybody know when the to-go orders open on Tock? Is it weekly or monthly?

I can't do anything raw. Are they able to accommodate?

Yes! They will ask you for any allergies or food preferences before your reservation. Although, our raw fish fish was replaced with avocado so that might be something to consider.

What is the course difference between the $118 vs $188 menu?

You get 2 additional courses, 1 of which is wagyu.

Can they accommodate vegetarians (no fish)?

They do ask about dietary restrictions but every dish (other than the desserts) has fish so there are no pure veggie options.

Taste: 5 Value: 5…read moreService: 5 One of the best Taiwanese meals I've had since coming back from Taipei at the start of the year. The hot and sour soup was thick and chunky, just how I like the soup. The scallion bread sandwich with 5-spice beef was distinct. The bread was perfectly baked and the beef was flavorful and juicy. There was both mustard greens and pickles that gave crunch and acidity to balance the meat and bread. The lotus root salad was refreshing while still having a kick from their in-house chili oil. Dan Dan noodles were also excellent. Fresh cucumbers, chewy noodles, flavorful sauce. Hearty portions with enough for a lunch the next day. Also appreciated the speed of service. Lines move quickly and food comes out quickly. Looking forward to my next visit!

We stopped by Joy early evening on Friday since we were craving some Asian food. I really liked…read moretheir interior decoration, it gave felt both modern Chinese and nostalgic at the same time. They also had really authentic and delicious looking cold appetizers like woodear mushrooms and lotus root salad. There was barely a line when we arrived and we were able to order and get a table without much wait. The food all came out at the same time and very quickly. We got their shrimp wontons, Chia Yi chicken rice, and sesame scallion bread stuffed with braised pork belly. I was ready to be transported back to Asia when I saw the dishes but tasting them left me wanting more. The shrimp wontons had very thin silky wrapper which was very tasty, but the shrimp itself was so bland and lacked texture. Most of the shrimp wontons I've loved had a nice bite to it from the baking soda soak but this was just soft dumpling skin on soft shrimp. The shrimp itself could've used more salt and white pepper too, but I suppose dousing it in chili oil helped. The scallion bread filled with pork belly is probably the tastiest dish. The pork belly was well cooked and paired well with the sweet sauce, crunchy peanuts and fresh herbs. The sesame scallion bread however tasted like it has been sitting out on the counter for hours waiting to be stuffed. The bread was cold and the exterior wasn't crispy, there were scallion pieces throughout but you couldn't really taste it. I would recommend trying other dishes before trying the chia yi chicken rice. The shredded chicken was dry and bland, mixed in with mostly soggy pieces of fried shallots. The rice was more flavourful because it was soaked in fragrant oils, but it also left it very mushy and almost congee like. The pickled radishes didn't add much to the dish either. I almost forgot but we also tried their honey lemon black tea and passion fruit black tea. Neither tea had a lot of tea flavor, it was mostly just sweet. The passion fruit syrup was pretty tasty but we both wished there was more black tea. I might be extra critical since I grew up with this type of food, but there are other restaurants in LA that delivers great quality Chinese food. TL;DR: Joy is a well decorated restaurant with good vibes that prioritizes speed of service over freshness and flavour of food.

Good flavor, chewy noodles, and fresh dumplings. Lots of variety on their menu. Casual environment, which is clean and orderly.

The way it's set up is pretty cultural. It reminds me of some hole-in-the-wall Asian restaurant the way they have metal utensils at each table. It's almost like a self-serve system to certain tools which is pretty common. I haven't drank water out of metal cup in a long time, so that was nostalgic too. We tried a variety of dishes to get a fuller understanding of their menu of what this place has to offer. I was really looking forward to the beef roll because it's usually one of my favorite dishes, but this one was disappointing. I define a good beef roll as one that's a good mix of sweet, savory and refreshing. The meat makes it savory and the veggies are supposed to counter it make the whole dish feel light. If someone disagrees with me, please share your thoughts on what a beef roll should taste like. The one from Pine & Crane was drenched in sauce. I could not taste the meat or the veggies and the whole thing tasted like a stick of sugar. The mapo tofu was on point, but this is quality you can probably make at home. The flavor profile was very similar to that of stuff you'd get a grocery store. The three cup jidori chicken came recommended, so we tried it. The flavor is very pungent and goes well with rice. If you don't mind that then it should not be a problem to get a seat. get your own utensils and bowls if needed. now let's get into food. The cold sesame noodle was so refreshing and savory that it may be my favorite thing on the menu. The beef noodle soup is also a classic and you cannot go wrong if you order that. Pandan Kaya toast is delicious and highly recommend. spicy wontons were so good, I could've done two orders. portions look small because they have things in smaller looking bowls, but everything is extremely filling and worth every penny - everything is priced fairly cheap as well so don't be afraid to try a little bit of everything and share.

This café is very close to the Wiltern Theater and we were able to find street parking easily. The beautiful thing was we were able to walk in order and be seated almost immediately. They have a limited menu, but the three items that we tried were excellent. We had the pork belly rice, which was delicious perfectly cooked rice and seasoned pork. We had the beef noodle soup, which was one of my father's favorites and this was awesome. Very delicious and we also had the spicy wontons again perfectly cooked wontons were excellent. This is a new go to eatery for me and my family. I can't wait to try other things on the menu.

But I was glad I came to this place. Love the atmosphere. It was energetic, a bit loud, and has a cooled retro night bar with neon signs. The alcohol display behind the bar was a spectacular view/design. It's high, making it looking pretty against the dim backdrop. We ordered four dishes, Dan Dan Mian, sichuan eggplant, chili wonton, and duck bao. The Dan Dan was unique. I didn't expect it to be spicy like all the other ones I've tried. But it was amazing! All of them were! Reservations are strongly recommended since it gets filled up pretty easily. Lastly, I want to give our waiter, Peter, a huge shoutout for being so attentive and engaging. He was on top of it! Great energy and very friendly.

The XO fatty noodles were just okay, and I wouldn't order them again. The walnut shrimp had way too much mayo, which completely overpowered the dish. I was also surprised that none of the meals came with steamed rice, and having to pay extra made an already expensive meal even pricier. Overall, the food was flavorless and overpriced. I wouldn't come back.

The braised pork belly was so incredibly soft and melt-in-your-mouth, and paired with the pickled carrots and cucumbers tucked into that steamed bao bun - so juicy. We also got the scallion pancakes which were crispy, chewy, and came with a soy ginger dipping sauce. The wood ear mushroom and bean curd stick salad was a nice lighter contrast to the heavier dishes too. We tried the beef noodles as well. The noodles were a bit on the tougher side, which is kind of expected with this style, but the flavors were solid overall. But do NOT sleep on dessert. I had to order the deep fried bao bun with ice cream scoop inside and it was delicious. Absolutely worth saving room for if you're looking to end your meal off with a sweet treat! Parking is easy with plenty of street parking nearby. Love that there's both indoor and outdoor seating - the patio outside is perfect for bigger groups at night, and the inside has its own aesthetic vibe that's equally great. Great service, good vibes, and delicious food. I'll be coming back!

Ordering style is the same, the layout is exactly the same, menu slightly reminiscent of the other. Pork belly over rice was good, noodle portion was small for the price. My biggest gripe was there was no A/C in the middle of July, and so many flies in the dining area. Who can enjoy a meal like this? Ended up boxing it up to eat at home. I think I'll stick to Joy in HLP. Your Homegirl, Violy

It was a but busy when we got there but luckily we got seared pretty shortly after arrival. We originally wanted to sit at the bar, but opted for a table for less wait time. When first looking at the menu we were shocked by the prices. I knew immediately i wanted to get the hui tou potstikers with pork and noodles. We ended up adding on the hongkong style wontons too. To my suprise the wontons arrived in a delicious and warm broth, keeping them perfectly moist and plump. The broth was so delicious even on a hot day, tasting faintly of sesame and scallion. Despite both dishes being pork they were so different and equally amazing in flavor. The pan fried potstikers which were CRISPED TO PERFECTION especially reminded me of black bean shortribs that you get from dimsum, fatty but hearty and had me wanting more and more each bite. The minced pork noodles were to no suprise, so good. Noodles tasted fresh, the sauce was umami with mushrooms and pork. While im not the biggest fan of mushrooms, i still ate it up. I feel it would be so good with some picked cabbage too to complement the saltiness. Most notable thing... THAT CHILI OIL. We probably used almost half the jar left at the table. It wasnt spicy at all, but it had this flavor that i genuinely have never tasted before. The texture of the chilli and sesame and the nutty flavor had me in awe. Enough to take two jars home... i would do it again. Servers were so quick, made sure everything we needed was at the table. Regardless of the crowd we were met with promptness and generosity. This that wonton place your girl tells you not to worry about forreal. Will be coming back despite the long drive from home.

Everything was prepared wonderfully and had tremendous flavor. I recommend trying their Hui Tou, stuffed with pork or beef, pork and leek pancakes, they also have vegetarian options. Their pork shumai was delicious, xiao long bao's soup dumplings were flavorful. Delicious. I definitely need a second trip here to try their soups and more of their variety of dumplings.
