We have always been a fan of Gavi' s food but our recent experience with their service will result in us removing them from further visits. We recently booked a party of eight for my wife's sister 80th birthday. We waited over twenty minutes to even be briefly visited by our waiter, who then disappeared. We had to ask twice for service. In addition it took over an hour to finally get our meals. The final two affronts were too much to believe. When we were just finishing our meals three staff magically appeared to attempt to clear our table before we even finished our meals. It clearly appeared there was another party booked so the pushed out. Finally the$260 bill contained a mandatory $40 tip. i am always willing to tip for competent service , but it clear Gavi will never again be my choice to dine read more

I had the most unpleasant experience last night at Piazza Gavi due to the behavior of one of their servers. I've been to Gavi multiple times, and even celebrated my father's 80th birthday with a large party there. The service has not always been up to par, but what I experienced last night was completely unacceptable. This occurred because I hadn't seen our server in over 20 minutes and asked a different staff member for a waterrefill. As a result, our server, Chris, decided to punish us by silently dropping our plates in front of us, actively avoiding our table for almost an hour, leaving us with our to-go boxes for over 15 minutes with no offer of the bill or dessert. I did go to the front to get my bill and to complain. The staff seemed familiar with these types of complaints about Chris, which makes me wonder why Piazza Gavi puts up with this unacceptable behavior. When there are plenty of other "fine dining" experiences in Tucson, I will likely not return. read more

Our first time back in over two years due to the Covid was this past Friday night. Guessing they would be busy, I made the reservation the previous day. How happy to see this place still going strong! The hostess station pulled up my reservation and immediately directed us to our table. Shortly thereafter, our server, "Johnny," appeared with bread and water. Since we were ready to order he took that as well. We started with the fried calamari for wifey and a bowl of the spicy lentil bean soup for me. I knew it was a huge bowl so we were ready to have what I didn't finish wrapped for take home. Entrees were the chicken parm for me and the lobster ravioli for wifey. The food was perfect, the service was impeccable, the place was packed. No one missed a beat. Really disappointed in our latest experience here. Made reservations weeks ago for anniversary dinner. Show up to chaos at hostess station, we were stuck holding the door trying to get in while patrons and PG staff kept going in and out, including the hostess--that's how chaotic the hostess station was. Normally, when a guest arrives, staff step to the side, allow the guest to enter the building. Nope, that's not what happened here. We finally checked in at the hostess station and watched as she told a waiter about his new assignment -- us. He threw his hands up in exasperation. My husband thought, "geez, I hope that guys not waiting on us tonight..." Few minutes later, Hostess breezes past us, without a word and gets about 15' away, notices we are not on her heels and turns and looks at us, as if to tell us with her eyes to follow her. So we scoot and follow her and she leads us to a table on the outer patio area. This al fresco area at PG is really charming, especially at sunset. Hostess asks if we are going to sit side by side or across from one another, we say across and we both grab our chairs and pull them out to sit. At the places we chose to sit, she clears the table free of plates, glasses, silverware and walks away. A little confused: If I sit at a place, why would the hostess take all the settings away? Hubs moves remaining place settings in front of us. Minutes later, our sour-faced friend who was throwing a fit at hostess stand arrives with menus. Slaps them down and says good evening, my name is ____, here's the menus and the specials, here's the wine list, specials are good tonight, here's the wine list. I'll be back to get your drink order. And walks away. Hubs finds pollen and general yuck on his bread plate, asks for a clean plate. Server grabs his plate from in front of him, and switches it with another plate from another outdoor table. Plonks it down in front of my hubs. Totally passive aggressive. Bread arrives. It was both cold (just came out of fridge) and stale. Hubs asks for fresh bread. Waiter grabbed basket and said of course and stomped off. When waiter returns he asks what we would like from the bar. We both look at him and tell him nothing. He is visibly shocked we are not drinking alcohol, and probably pretty pissed too since that only amps up what he would expect for a tip. I order the bruschetta a la caprese and hubs gets the calamari as appetizers. Bread comes out nice and warm and waiter confirm with husband that the bread is warm, twice. Different loaf of bread, fresh, and is toasted around edges. Very nice. Appetizers come out and everything looks good. Take a piece of bruschetta and can smell the raw garlic wafting from the top, take a bite and *CRUNCH* down on something rock hard. Oh. It's just the bottom of the bread which has been burned so badly it has turned to rock. Nice. I put my piece of bruschetta down and start to take a closer look at the a la caprese part that is covering the bruschetta. A few pieces of mozz, emphasis on FEW. There is also roughly the equivalent of 2 large tomatoes, diced, covering the bruschetta (it's A LOT). Mixture of spices, and pieces of basil, but the basil looks funny. I get closer and discover basil stems, very mature basil flowers, and tough woody leaves atop my bruschetta. My basil in my garden bolted already a few weeks ago. I've been monitoring it for more buds ever since to pinch them away. Why? Why would I stop basil from flowering in my own garden of rosemary, thyme and basil? PRO TIP: basil is an annual. Its entire annual existence is focused on getting to the flower/seed phase so it can reproduce. As a chef in my own cucina, I interrupt the plants flowering phase by pinching off the flowers as soon as they begin, sometimes I can save the plant from turning, sometimes I'm not quick enough. Basil that has bolted (flowered) turns bitter, like GROSS bitter. This is what has been intentionally placed atop my bruschetta: bitter, tough, woody basil, with very mature basil flowers. I scraped away all the stems and flowers and solely ate the tomatoes and few pieces of mozz. I couldn't eat much more of the bread because honestly, I didn't want a dental bill for breaking a tooth on bread that had turned to rock. The whole evening at PG was really disappointing. We expected to not be treated like shlocks upon arrival, we expected to be welcomed warmly and be treated with respect, as guests of the establishment. We expected zero passive aggressiveness attitude from our server, we expected food that was being monitored by a chef coming out of the kitchen. We expected a full experience, not one that had been abridged because our waiter didn't want the extra table. We expected the experience to match the first experience we had at PG, and this experience turned out to be the exact antithesis of that. I'm so sad to say, 0/10, will not return. read more

I want to be clear that Piazza Gavi did nothing wrong, but they also haven't really impressed me -- they were fine, and that's fine! We've gotten take-out from them on multiple occasions, and tried a variety of dishes. On the most recent visit, we got the Mussels & Shrimp Serenata (mussels & shrimp in a light crema sauce with spinach & mushrooms, served over spaghettini), the Shrimp Funghi (shrimp & sautéed mushrooms in a light wine sauce, served over spaghettini), and the Spinach & Cheese Lasagna. All were good, and the seafood dishes had good amounts of shrimp in the pasta. I did find myself vaguely feeling as though I ought to have ordered something else, but I also had that feeling on prior visits ever since they struck my favorite dish -- stuffed eggplant -- from the menu. Everything I've gotten is always fine, but never something that I immediately know will be my new favorite. Love to come here for a quick glass of wine or a espresso martini (very chocolatey). The chop salad looks like baby food but it is absolutely fantastic probably one of my favorite salads ever. The servers aren't a fan of anyone having just an appetizer and drinks so I suggest you sit at the bar instead. The only photo I took but it's representative of the portions! They were all big lol but I ordered the pork carnevale which was a pork tenderloin in Rosa sauce with shrimp, spinach and mostaccioli! Chef's kiss, it was bomb, even better as leftovers! We went for lunch to scope out the space for a possible Christmas party so we ordered the baked Bruschetta and Salmon Carpaccio which also came with a wedge like salad.... EVERYTHING was great! and I don't say that lightly because Italian is not my fave but I enjoyed it. You are given a small carafe of water (enough to fill one glass), but it wasn't enough. Also, he never came by to see if we needed something. Once we got seated, our server did not even acknowledge us for 10 more minutes. Once our server came, he consistently looked down on us, making weird jokes and making us uncomfortable. BE WARNED THIS PLACE IS PRICEY They bring a basket of different bread and a cold pasta salad to the table. Different types of bread, sesame, focaccia and a white bread is what we received. Fresh and great quality but we only had a small piece as we know bread fills you up quickly. Their house wines were great but they were also priced at $9 a glass. For an appetizer we ordered the calamari which a sticker shock of $16 but we heard it was great from online sources. It was mildly over cooked resulting in some chewy texture and the oil tasted old. The main courses we ordered were a chicken Alfredo the chicken costa $12.00 extra, and a chicken sherry $32 with a side of "pasta" It was strange the side of pasta was a spaghetti which didn't go with the chicken sherry which was chicken Marsala but the chicken was was well cooked! And the flavor was good. The quantity and quality was definitely not worth $32 The alfredo was a decent portion and very good. Overall an okay experience but way overpriced. read more

We started off with the calamari with spicy Crema sauce. The best calamari I've had anywhere, period. Next my favorite, "pork carnivale, park cutlets topped with spinach and cheese then topped again with shrimp and then again with cheese, accompanied with pasta and a Rosa Crema sauce...delicious! My partner ordered the veal saltimbuca, which came with a side of pasta. As we were leaving we were offered a piece of tiramisu to go, (yes thank you). So we came back, with my Dad in tow as he wanted "good old school Italian" and that is exactly what we got! Service was fantastic, much better than our last visit. From start to finish our server made sure we had everything we needed. We ordered a number of things; all incredibly tasty - Spicy Shrimp appetizer, Cioppino, Scamponi Marsala and my Dad had his favorite... Spaghetti & Meatballs. He compares this dish to a restaurant he and my Mom loved back in San Diego that made the best meatballs. Had dinner with 4 other couples, so a toatal of 10 . Not one person complained about their food. Everyone had great complimrents. My wife had chicken parmagiana with a side salad. The portion was awesome! My wife said it was very delicious. I had the Sole Dore. OMG!!! Very delicious and a large portion. Cooked just right with a delicious sauce, The waiter was very busy but was able to handle all of our needs. He was very nice and answered all our menu questions. Great place, ambience was very nice. Crowded on a Saturday night but with RSVP, no problem. All though we didn't sit in their "outside patio", when the weather cools off this area would be awesome to sit at. Used to come here all the time when visiting. It's been a few years and we came back for a wedding. We came for lunch. Welcomed nicely and and sat on the patio. It's really pretty. Our server came over and we ordered drinks and I ordered the tortellini soup. After looking at the menu... we all were ready to order. Green salad and meatball sub for my husband. My sister got the chicken Parm sandwich. I got the meat ravioli. Soup came out and I must admit I wasn't impressed. Basically.. clear chicken broth.. a handful of cheese tortellini. Was not offered any Parmesan for it. Oh.. I must say... the bread that is brought to the table is just amazing!! The green salad came and it was huge and was delicious. Our main meals came. Sandwiches were huge!! My ravioli were wonderful. It's nice to know that they are still a very solid restaurant. Service was just okay... but honestly.. I'm happy to see servers still working hard. One of my favorite Italian restaurants in Tucson. Great ambiance, love the outside seating, plenty of heaters for the winter. Indoor dining can be somewhat loud. Fresh appetizer bread is delicious, took our waiter numerous visits in and out to bring it out, took at least half an hour. Even though there were plenty of empty tables for a Saturday night, seemed like a busy night for the staff with some of the delays. Always enjoy the pasta, it's nice to be able to choose the sauce and the noodle. Fettuccine with the spicy crema is my go to. The chicken Milanese was great too - very large piece of chicken and was not too heavy on the breading. Dessert was our highlight, best tiramisu I've had! It is made in house, will definitely get it every time I come here. We have had the calamari here before and other pastas, all were delicious. I am new in town (3 weeks) and looking for cool places to just hang out, have a drink and maybe an appetizer. I came here last week for a work meeting (drink at the bar) and thought it was cool and wanted to go back again. I went again today and the service was absolutely terrible! The bartender paid great attention to all the regulars and passed me by several times until I had to get his attention to order a drink. nice dinner at gavi! the best part was the ambiance. we sat outside on the patio! I ordered the chicken piccata. The sauce was good however part of the chicken was chewy and hard to cut but the flavor was very good! I got turtle cheesecake for desert and then later found out it was not made it house and frozen from a wholesale bakery called "dianne's fine deserts". So next time I would get the tiramisu instead as it is the only desert made in house. The service was great even when the restaurant was packed on a Saturday night! Everyone who worked there was nice and efficient! I think the prices are a bit much but you do get a large portion and the menu is huge you can find something for any picky eater. I think everything would be fresher and thoughtful if they had a smaller menu and more focused ingredients/homemade pastas. read more

Real made from scratch Italian food, fair, prices, and wonderful service. Since finding Piazza Gavi I have eaten here 3 separate times, and hosted a work event with them because of the outstanding food and service. Based on my visits you can't go wrong with their menu unless you are gluten free and even then they might have an option. I have tried their pizza, pasta, and lasagna all of which were insanely good! My personal recommendation is the Cabonara Crema. My only wish is that they had a more central location, but I will continue to be a patron because the food is so good that it is worth the drive. If Yelp had a "hidden gems" section Piazza Gavi would be #1 on that list. Do yourself a favor and give them a visit. read more

You could taste the spice. The dish looked like cheese whiz and did not taste much better. Might be one of the worst meals I have ever had. I think this was a case of bad choice of food. The preparing seemed good. Well cooked. Spiced good. Just bad. I ate it all. When he said it looks like you liked it. I did not have the heart to tell him it was terrible. Just told him I was hungry. We waiting 45 minutes past our reservation for a better table. Yup we waited until the restaurant emptied out. For a great spot which we made reservation for a few days earlier. Ok.
