Made reservations for a party of 8 to spend some holiday time with friends. We were quickly seated at our reservation time in the middle of their peak dinner period. Our server, Manny, was exceptional. Probably the best server I've had in Tucson. Again, Manny was exceptional not just good. The restaurant is showing signs of tiredness and although this is part of their charm, some updating might want to be in the near future- especially in the restrooms. I've been to Piazza Gavi several times in the past and in all honesty, the food is really missing the mark. Given the prices they charge, there is definitely a need for improvement. I ordered the smoked salmon carpaccio (which was okay) and the seafood cioppino. Portions were both generous. The cioppino really missed the mark. It was as if I was eating a crawfish boil. That's what the broth tasted like. Overly salty and lacked depth of flavor, especially sweetness from fennel and tomatoes. Tasted more like Cajun seasoning. I liked that they were generous on the bread and didn't charge an auto gratuity for large parties. The rest of the party seamed to enjoy their food for the most part. We have been visiting Gavi's since they made food on Broadway and Pantano many many years ago. Their menu is incredible and so much to choose from. They have a nice bar situated in the center back wall. The have an outdoor area as well but this time we ate inside. I made a reservation via OpenTable to celebrate my husbands birthday. I was surprised how busy they were this time in August on a Friday! Service was excellent, they had many specials not mentioned in their large menu, and server was prompt of providing our drinks, bread and food. Overall and excellent evening! Oh yes the food...scrumptious in every bite! Just delicious and the serving sizes are plenty!! Most have a portion to take home the next day. Had date night here, a couple weeks back.. and will definitely be back! I made a reservation shortly before arriving and was able to sit within minutes upon arriving on a Friday night around 7PM. It was pretty busy, but still had room for more. It's very moody inside with darker more intimate lighting. Walking up, you see a very well beautiful covered patio to dine on. Inside their tables as well as boot for seating. The menu is large, including pastas, sandwiches, yummy looking salads, pizzas., etc. So there's a lot to choose from. I love that one choosing a pasta, you can also choose the noodle you want in it. I chose a Bolognese ($25) dish upon the service suggestion, and it was good, but I definitely chose the wrong noodle to go with it.. so if you're unsure, it's probably a good idea to ask the server which noodle would go best. We ordered the antipasto appetizer ($23) as well as the Salmon Carpaccio ($23). Both were still plentiful and definitely worth ordering again! They also serve free bread, which, if you ask me as a waste of food since it's served with cold bread and cold butter.. I don't understand my restaurants do this because how are we supposed to wipe this cold hard butter on this hard bread? Anyway, my husband ordered a lobster ravioli ($33), and though he felt it was salty I thought it was good. I definitely want to go back and try more of their menu ! read more

This place was super busy even at 8 p.m. on a Wednesday, which bodes well, right?! But without a doubt, this was the worst "Italian" food we ever have had. We ordered tortellini with pesto. The "pesto" did not live up to its name; it tasted like a watery cream sauce with grass clippings in it. When the waiter asked if we liked it and we reluctantly said no, he kindly offered to replace it with tortellini with Alfredo sauce. He quickly returned with a generous plate of rubbery, off-tasting fettuccini (not tortellini) in runny, salty, white sauce. We then ordered two pieces of tiramisu, yet, alas, it was stale. We had to pilfer utensils, napkins, salt and pepper from another table. The "Capri salad" was the highlight - tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil leaves (an interpretation of Caprese but also with bell peppers, olives and radicchio). All in all, the meal was not cheap - $94 plus tip for two salads, two desserts, one pasta dish and no beverages. We would not go back! read more

We've been here a few times and loved it, however, this last time was with a party of 4. I ordered the Chicken Fra Diavolo, which frankly was a half a chicken breast over cold plain noodles, and basically no sauce with 'Italian pico de gallo' on it. I wish I'd have ordered something else, and I ended up only taking a few bites before just packing it to go (later adding creme and tomato sauce w/ mozzarella to it at home for improvement). However, I do want to say that just because I didn't care for what I ordered; others may love it and the menu is so diverse you'll have plenty of other options. We all shared a pepperoni pizza and calamari crème, which was good. Our daughter (9 yrs) got the lasagna (she loved it), and my Mother-in-Law got the Serenata, which we all had a small taste of, and it was pleasant and easy on the palate/gut. Granted, we went on a Saturday night, but our server was relatively hard to flag down, didn't pay much attention, and didn't serve thoroughly. When asked for napkins, more plates, bread, etc... he often missed bringing them to us; often we got up to ask a busboy for help or got it ourself from the nearby supply table (in the outdoor seating area at the main entrance). He also didn't get us our boxes until we'd waited 15 minutes, then another 10 minutes for the check; we got charged for a drink that never arrived, and it was kind of chaotic. They also offered tap water before any drink orders, and despite us placing it at the end of our table, clearly not drinking it, even when next to dirty plates to be picked up, the glasses remained there the entire time. In the end, we still had a good time; it may have just been how busy they were. Overall, I'm hoping to go back when not so many people are there. Our prior experiences were great; it could just be the time of year, the night we went, and the hour (around 7:30). The outdoor seating was really comfortable and the ambiance is more well-suited for a quieter day; probably not a busy night, otherwise it loses points for atmosphere; not due to the restaurant, just the crowd and volume. read more

We came here to celebrate a retirement. I'd called ahead a few days and they basically had to squeeze us in, as they were booked for that evening. They found a table for us indoors, in an area that was a little secluded from the main part. The only negative was that it was pretty noisy indoors, but it beat sitting on the patio on a warm night. We ordered the fried calamari, which was ok. (We got spoiled by the calamari we could get everywhere in Australia, so nothing here is quite as yummy!) Everyone enjoyed their meals, and we all got huge portions. We'll have another meal or two to enjoy another time. I had a dinner salad, which was good. For my meal, I ordered the Chicken Formaggio. It was two big pieces of tender chicken, stuffed with spinach and cheese, with shrimp and artichokes on top. It was all covered with a nice red sauce. It was supposed to come with a side of pasta, but they were happy to sub some mixed veggies for me. We even got a free bowl of ice cream for the retiree! Our waiter, Chris, was great. Had dinner with a couple of friends. The setting is nice but inside is a bit noisy, especially during happy hour. However, that said, the menu is huge with many choices as well as the specials which on the night we went included varieties of ravioli. I opted for the lobster ravioli that came in a lemon cream sauce that was delicious. It was a large portion as were the portions of my friends, We all ended up with food to take home for another meal The service throughout the meal was excellent. Our take home phone was prepared by the waiter in a styrofoam container wrapped in plastic wrap which was nice to protect it from spilling. The food is my favorite Italian food EVER. The service is terrible. We had the chopped salad to start. It was SOOOO GOOD and enough to easily feed 4- maybe 6. Selected the house Pinot noir- loved it. The wine and food menus are huge.Then we had spaghetti bolognese and oooh so great and so hot! Again- enough for a few people. We saw the server after waiting at least 10 min then when the food was delivered and that was it. We agreed that we'd not return if the food was not so outstanding. I love coming to this place, especially bringing out of town family to enjoy this fabulous restaurant with its great food, views, and service. We were a party of nine and we were seated in a semi private area with beautiful mountain views. Our waiter Zachariah greeted us within minutes. He promptly took our drink order and conveyed the night's dinner specials. Within minutes he brought our drinks and provided us with complementary fresh bread and butter. We love the extra-virgin olive oil and the balsamic vinaigrette that was on the table. We all placed our order and proceeded to enjoy our evening. Went with some friends here about 4pm on a Friday. I have been here multiple times, lunch and dinner, and the experience is always similar. The food is always top notch. It is first class Italian food. The dinner portions are large and most of the party took half of their meals home. This night, I ordered the Chicken Cacciatore. The vegetables were cut large enough so they didn't disappear. The chicken was chunked white meat moist enough and not dry like white meat can get. The sauce was not too spicy but enough spice to not be bland. It came with a side of spaghetti with marinara sauce. The marinara sauce seemed kinda bland and bites of the cacciatore sauce. I am sure it would have been good standing on its own. Because we went early, it was not too crowded but was getting busy about the time we were leaving. The decor gave an Italian feel instead of generic restaurant so many ethic food places have transitioned to. There is a large bar if you are into that kinda thing. Note as is usual, there is a automatic gratuity if you party is over a certain size (not sure what it was but we had about 11). It was a bit confusing as I did not see it would be added on the menu but I was not specifically looking for it. Also, the bill was a bit confusing because it listed it as service charge, not gratuity. Further down on the ticket it alluded to gratuity though. It should have specifically said "Group Gratuity" instead of "Service Charge". I love it here, so I will definitely be back. You should try them out. read more

The food here is fantastic and for the most part the servers are great. It is a pretty restaurant and the food is excellent. The portions are huge and could easily be split between two people. I use to love this place. It's been years since I was here and I wanted for my birthday to go here. We drive an hour just to get here. We arrived (without a reservation...yeah I know) and the hostess asked us if we had reservations and My Wife said "no we thought about it. ". The host said to my wife and I "of course you didn't.". Nice! We proceeded to stay, even though we were given attitude. They sat us on the patio which was nice and pretty. They also made a fuss even though I counted about 8 open tables enough for the 4 of us. We ordered our food, which was actually really good, but when the waiter brought the plates to the table, he slammed the plates down and then proceeded to go to the people next to us and talk to them. We use to love this place. The food is good but service was bad from the waiter and hostess. The 2 stars is because the food, ice cream (which they gave us for free), the ambiance and the AMAZING manger that came around and waited on us towards the end of our visit and refilled our waters too. Food tastes great- and dish sizes were big so easily can get two meals out of one dish. I recommend doing the lunch special. We did the lunch special. For $25 pp included for each person was a glass of wine, which I liked very much, a giant salad appetizer, and a main dish meal, which I was able to have made gluten free. My family and I dinning this past week at this restaurant and it was an unfortunate experience the food was amazing but management was horrible... apparently the managers in this place are to busy to solve the problems of costumers apparently in this place the managers serve tables? If you ask me there is only place to do one, either you are a manager or de server. I had to wait to pay my bill because the manger took to long to fix the problem. This not the first time I have and uncomfortable experience due to management in this place I been dining several times in here and a lot of times I have to see how horrible the staff is treated by the this old lady manager she is always yelling at them and being so mean and it really ruins your experience hearing how poorly these servers get treated. Okay, this is my second review. First review was great. We thought we had found a place to dine near our house that we liked. And was delighted with everything. After dining here numerous times, our last visit was terrible. We had a reservation. We waited 30 minutes and no server approached us. I flagged the hostess. She was apologetic and went to find out who was to be attending our table. Ten (10) more minutes passed...we decided to leave. As we were leaving a young male server asked us if we had been helped. I hastily said "No, we are leaving. We have been waiting at our table for 40 minutes without any acknowledgement". He mumbled something. But at that point I didn't care. I had to say something here as I noticed numerous similar service reviews in YELP. Perhaps the management will take notice of the reviews and make some changes in staff. I too was a waiter once in a busy restaurant so I understand the hectic pace of it. But what I found totally unacceptable was not even an acknowledgment from any server such as "thank you for your patience I'll be right with you". That's basic common sense. Management: PLEASE do something about training your staff about basic server etiquette. That would go a long way. read more

Do not be faked out by the 3.6 rating. There are a bunch of 1 star reviews that seem to speak to a period where the waitstaff was overworked. You'll note that there were few, if any, complaints about the food. I'm a native Tucsonan, but live out of state. Still come back every couple of months to visit my folks. How have I not heard of this great place? We stopped in on a whim for lunch, having looked at other eateries nearby and not wowed. What a great find this is! We had a veal milanese and a veal parm. Both delicious, as were the side spaghettis. Everything I saw coming out from the kitchen looked great. For a 2pm lunch, a lot of people here. No issues with the service at all, they were hustling.
