Nordstrom Brea -- this is what exceptional customer service looks like.
What started as a concern became one of the best Nordstrom experiences I've had.
I came in to pick up my daughter's homecoming dress from a mobile order. It was her first homecoming, so this dress was incredibly special to me. When it was handed to me in a simple plastic bag rather than a Nordstrom shopping or garment bag, I was disappointed. Nordstrom has always represented elevated service and presentation to me, and this didn't feel like the experience I expected for such a special dress.
I asked to speak with a manager--not to complain, but because I genuinely wanted to understand.
Tara was phenomenal. She was warm, patient, attentive, and gracious. She looked at the order, explained the process, and suddenly everything made sense. More importantly, she understood why this moment mattered to me as a mom. She offered to have my daughter's dress pressed and placed in a garment bag, and it came back absolutely beautiful.
Here's the part Tara probably doesn't realize mattered so much: my daughter had NO idea I was picking up her dress. When she came home and saw it beautifully pressed in a Nordstrom garment bag, her face lit up. She felt special, grown-up, and "expensive." She was basically like, "OMG, my gown came in a Nordstrom garment bag!"
That presentation elevated the dress, her excitement, and the entire experience of her first homecoming. I realized it was never really about a bag--it was about the moment attached to it. Tara understood that without ever meeting my daughter.
She could have simply explained the process and sent me on my way. Instead, she turned a disappointment into a memory. She made me feel heard and welcomed rather than dismissed. THAT is hospitality and the kind of customer care that makes Nordstrom feel like Nordstrom. Tara is truly top-tier management.
I also have to recognize Kimberly, whom we met near the café while trying to find a manager. What a gem! She had the biggest smile and was patient, polished, and genuinely engaging. While we waited, she talked with my mom and me about colors--what complements us and brings out our features. It wasn't a sales pitch; it was someone genuinely connecting with customers. She even had me thinking about how to accessorize my daughter's dress. Kimberly is exactly the kind of associate you remember.
Then our "quick trip" downstairs turned into another wonderful experience at the Dolce & Gabbana beauty counter.
Marlene was incredible. I mentioned another D&G fragrance I loved, and she went out of her way to find it. She provided samples, answered my questions, and gave me a little glam session that ultimately resulted in me purchasing makeup AND the perfume! Her energy is contagious--spunky, happy, passionate, and genuinely excited about what she does.
The other D&G artist helping my mom was just as wonderful. My mom isn't always the easiest person to convince to step outside her comfort zone, but she chose and applied shades for her and found one of the BEST lip colors I've ever seen on my mom. She looked beautiful! The entire team was so patient, knowledgeable, and fun that our plan to hurry and beat traffic went completely out the window.
Lindsay, if you're reading this, please buy your Dolce & Gabbana ladies a coffee or treat them to something--they earned it!
I also met Girlie, another wonderful manager. Our café experience was just as lovely--great staff, great lunch, and of course the famous Nordstrom tomato soup with those non-negotiable crostinis. Absolutely delicious.
My family has shopped at Nordstrom for generations. My mom has been a customer for decades, and I've visited many Nordstrom locations throughout California. There is a level of service I associate with the Nordstrom name, and Brea reminded me exactly why I've always loved this store.
What impressed me most wasn't that everything started perfectly--it didn't. It was how the team handled it. They listened, cared, and connected with us. They turned what could have been a disappointing pickup into an afternoon my mom and I genuinely enjoyed and made my daughter's first homecoming even more special.
Tara, Kimberly, Marlene, Girlie, the Dolce & Gabbana team, the café staff, and everyone who helped us deserve recognition.
Tara, whatever you're doing with your team, keep doing it.
