You really must go! We had planned to get dinner here, but schedule shifted and happily arrived just before the end of lunch service (NOTICE: kitchen closed 4pm-5pm for changeover). But it could not have been better. While we were close to the only patrons, this blend between coffee shop/bar/fine restaurant is absolutely a home away from home with a staff that was incredible friendly and welcoming. And to boot, the food was great. We got sandwiches, crepes and side salads. And we left wanting more of everything - who ever wants more side salad?... A local recommended this restaurant to us, and I'm so glad she did. We went for brunch on a Sunday, and the food was really something special. They put a nice twist on the usual brunch menu. I had a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich that was not the usual. It was on a french baguette, with applewood bacon, sriracha aioli, arugula, and Vermont cheddar. I am drooling just thinking about it. My husband had the breakfast burrito, which was packed with sausage, bacon eggs, herbs, and gruyere....yummy. Everything we saw come out of the kitchen, looked great too. The place is cute, though I wouldn't eat out back, the picnic tables were crawling with ants, they were literally coming out of the space between the wood slats. So we ate inside instead. My only real complaint was that the service was a bit slow and overall lackluster. I love this place. I love Maggie. I love Philippex2. Aleise. So much to love. Their events, BBQs. Happy birthday Ms. Fairfax! You've had a great year. But, as I told the bartender today, the food I've had in the BBQs and in events don't match up with the brunch or food I've eaten in the restaurant. I can tell it's not the same chef or food prep. I had charred burnt pancakes today. The compote saved the day to mask the charred blackened bottom pancakes. The quiche Lorraine was to die for. I'm assuming it's obviously because it wasn't just made, as it was a slice, and wasn't made by whomever prepared my charcoal pancakes. They were awful. The French Toast I'd had before we're OK. Unmemorable and I didn't even review because they probably were Unmemorable. I don't remember loving or hating them. The tiramisu was also OK, and it's my favorite dessert ever. I didn't like their version. As stated, other food I've had here is AMAZING. To die for. Slap your mama worthy. And then I dine in and I know whoever is back there isn't holding down the fort like Miss Maggie. At all. Not even close. So, what do you do? Maybe I'll stick to special events. We met a local friend here for brunch ..What a great place . Friendly , helpful and the food was excellent. I had a Lardon Salad and my husband had a sandwich . I also saw a delivery truck there from the Chefs Warehouse , which is a quality purveyor who sells to very high end restaurants..Highly recommend this one . We found this place on a fluke. We couldn't get into the place we originally wanted but I asked the owner his favorite places and this was his first recommendation. I'm not from here and my friend who lives 30 mins away was a little nervous about the area but it turned out to be the best find ever!! We knew it was gonna be good as soon as we pulled up! The menu had just enough selection and variety. We both got salads which were so good! I got the frisée and bacon and the steak. It was PERFECTLY cooked and the herb butter on top was sooo good. I literally licked the plate. My friend got their version of the Cobb salad maybe called the Fairfax salad. She said it was the best salad she's ever had! And the French onion she loved too. The best part was the prices. Such a great value. We went on an off time so I couldn't really speak to the vibe. But it was set up and decorated very hip. Really delightful place with interior brick wall and original wood flooring. Our group of four enjoyed brunch here, and every dish was delicious. We tried the trois fromage grilled cheese, breakfast burrito, and goat cheese omelette - all very good flavors. I had the smoked trout salad (generous amount), with mixed greens, pickled red onion, croutons, capers, and a tasty lemon vinaigrette. Such a delight on a hot summer day! It frustrates me to have to give less than a stellar review in a city that I spent 18 years living in, so I will chalk this up to the Restaurant/staff having an off type of day. We ordered two double shots of Espresso over ice and asked for cream. On this note, we never received spoons and the cream was given to us in a huge insulated canister (just odd). My boyfriend ordered the BBQ duck sandwich and the first thing I said to him was "where IS the duck?" He then proceeded to pull a sizable piece of duck skin (sans the actual duck) from inside the bread. I will say the bread was outrageously delicious as was the spicy slaw, however the price warranted some hearty portions of meat. I also think the addition of the Gerkins was a little strange. We had two servers, the blonde was bubbly and sweet and the brunette looked as if she really didn't want to be there. Placed an order on Yelp, pre paid, showed up and they looked at me like I was crazy saying they were closed between 4pm and 5pm so that it's impossible I placed an order. I said I pre paid and the counter person was super rude basically dismissing me without seeming to care at all and continued working without talking to me. Told me to call and get my money back. So now I have to waste my time trying to get my money back for their mistake of putting wrong hours on Yelp and then taking no responsibility. I stepped in whipped cream and when I asked if they could clean it, they swept it up with a broom smearing the whipped cream over the floor and I still couldn't put my feet properly under the table. The service was awkward but it was alright and I don't mind it now...they got me wrong coffee and that for me is a big NO when you only serve 3 tables in the whole restaurant. To sum up! I've been here a few times for breakfast and each time I've never been disappointed. I always start with a Bloody Mary. I've never weaned from the extensive crepes list they have, and always end up getting the chorizo, goat cheese, and tomato crepe. The flavor is there, and I don't even need to season it with s&p. Surprised that drinks came pretty quickly to table then all downhill from there. After about 20 minutes the one waitress in the place brought our main dishes which surprised us since we ordered 4 apps. We told her to cancel the apps and she seemed confused by this as if the idea that appetizers were to come before the main dishes was something that she was hearing for the first time in her life. We finished eating and considered having dessert but after looking at our dirty unbussed plates for half an hour decided we had enough, went to the counter, paid and left. In fairness the food they managed to get to the table was good but not enough to warrant all the other nonsense. There are plenty of other new entries and old standbys in the immediate area to not have to waste a night out on this place.
