We wanted to go to Caffè Machiatto for my mother's birthday, but I didn't get the memo that they were closed on Mondays. Since I had already bookmarked Ms. Fairfax, we walked a bit down and stopped in a few minutes after they opened. I will say that the only reason why we stopped by was because I thought there would be brunch options, as their website did not clearly state when brunch is offered. We had already sat down when the gentleman there gave us two extremely small lunch menus and said they had no breakfast available, although they had breakfast specials like an avocado croissant (which doesn't make sense to have if you don't offer breakfast). I ended up getting 2 sweet crepes from the menu that were pretty docile (too many expensive crepes that seemed a bit fussy for such a small, quaint place, like crepes with fig, blue cheese and various other ingredients ). My father ordered the only vegan item on the menu and my mother had the grilled cheese with prosciutto. The plates were tapas size and the side was a miniature gherkin. I felt ripped off for the price of $12 for small sandwiches that were mediocre. Sorry, I know plenty of people are saying that this is an eatery straight out of Brooklyn, but you're not in Brooklyn. I have worked in and gone to school in NYC for years... there are niché places in Brooklyn that are great but don't fit in elsewhere. I really wanted to like this place from the reviews, but it just doesn't do it for me. I always wish places the best in doing well, so I do the same for this joint. I just hope they try to serve the neighborhood instead of pretending they're somewhere else. read more

I had the pleasure of taking a business meeting there today. The wait person was warm and engaging, eager to please. She kind enough to let us move to a larger table (for 4) although we were 2 and then lowered the volume on the speaker immediately behind my colleague's head when asked. Upside, the music choices were great! I gained 5 lbs reading the menu. It all looked enticing. We shared a wonderful crepe and I had a cappuccino. My only tiny gripe....there was no Equal. Came in weary and hungry from traveling 19 hrs straight. We left with happy tummies, new friends, and a little superb cocktail buzz :) Looking forward to another visit! Ms. Fairfax was an interesting choice. It's atmosphere of reclaimed furniture, soft indie music and greenery makes it unique to the area but reminiscent of Williamsburg, Seattle, or a San Francisco hipster bar. I tried 4 meal items and three deserts. The steak was really good, every bite was juicy. The medley of veggies that came with it however was extremely bitter. The Serrano and Melon salad was really good but you have to eat the components together otherwise it's a little off. The Pork and Leak meatballs were GREAT! The Mushroom Costrini was good too but the egg was slightly overcooked. The yoke did not run at all when cut open. The deserts were also good. Ms. Fairfax took over the old space from the beloved restaurant Martha, and amazingly it manages to be an improvement on what had been a great spot to begin with. Everything I've eaten there is delicious, from the croissant breakfast sandwich to the homemade sausage to the well-made reuben sandwiches for lunch. Stopped here for brunch on the way back from a weekend in the Catskills. Food was delicious. We ordered the toast with avocado and eggs and a crepe with ham, gruyere, and egg. As a person who works in the service industry let me just say it takes quite a bit to have me leave a bad review on yelp. I'll give a quick run down. So we went to this place for brunch, ordered our drinks, another table walked in about 10 minutes later, finished our drinks at this point, then at about the 15 minute mark saw that table being asked by what seems to be the manager or owner if they were ready to order, after they ordered my boyfriend politely said "Hey, if possible we would like to order as well". Now considering that table came in a solid ten minutes after us and we were finished with our drinks, I don't find that to be unreasonable. She saw us walk in and definitely understood we had been there for 10-15 min plus. Her response is to look at him, give him a dirty look, walk back behind the bar, tell another server there who proceeded to laugh, and eventually five minutes later send our drink runner/initial server over. Not only did she do this about 20 feet from me so I could watch the entire thing go down, but at no point did she ever come to apologize, or just take our damn order. Who does that? What a weird experience. We ended up just grabbing the check and leaving. I will say the server that initially took our drink order was sweet, and the wait doesn't even bother me because it was a sunday brunch, I don't mind my dining experience being dragged out, but to have the audacity to be that rude in a customer service oriented business? I'm in Newburgh for a visit and my sister took me to Ms. Fairfax for a late lunch. "Try the grilled cheese sandwich," she told me. For once I listened to her and I'm so glad I did. I had it with prosciutto and this was the best grilled cheese sandwich of my life. It came on a baguette, with salad and special mustard on the side. Every bite was fantastic. I could've eaten another, but that would have been excessive... So we came back the following afternoon and had a repeat performance of the day before. It was just as wonderful as the first time. I'll be visiting again in the spring and I can't wait to go back to Ms. Fairfax. read more
