This is a classic Mexican Restaurant. Growing up in the 60s, we didn't have a lot of money, so once a month our big night out was to Mexico City, a north Long Beach restaurant that still defines my idea of authentic Mexican cuisine. Sadly, after over 50 years Mexico City closed in 2008. My wife and I mourned the loss of this great restaurant for several years. A few years ago a friend of mine mentioned Los Compadres on Anaheim, saying he thought it was a great substitute for my old favorite. It turns out he was spot on. This restaurant has the best Mexican food in the city. The service is always great, and the atmosphere is what I always look for in a Mexican restaurant. Growing up my dad always judged a Mexican restaurant by their Chile rellenos, I still stand by that. In the numerous times we have dined here, I have yet to be disappointed by any dish I have ordered (P.S. The margaritas are spectacular!!). Go mid day if you want to avoid a wait at the dinner hour, or go really early and enjoy their breakfast offerings. I love their chilaquiles. read more

Parking is very small we circled the parking lot about 3 times before my friend gave up and decided to park down the street. We walked up to the resturant and went directly to the bar where i ordered a delicious michelada it was a sunday and i was definitely feeling the effects from the weekend. We were promply seated and our order was taken. Soups were brought put almost immediately. Also try the guacamole , made fresh when your eating it you will know . The only take aways from this place is that there food is over priced compared to other Mexican food place . Hurray Yelp comes to the rescue yet again! I was out & about yesterday found myself hungry borderline "HANGRY" & asked the wine seller at Wine Country where was a good place to grab some Mexican food (as it was Cinco de Mayo and all) he suggested Los Compadres. I searched Yelp & sure enough the reviews were favorable. They have a small lot and turning into it is rather quick so be prepared to slow down if you are relying on GPS for directions. Free Street parking is also in the area too just in case you can't get into the lot. I went inside and of course there was a wait but 2 young ladies were just getting up from the Bar (which flying solo is the perfect place to run in and get out) it's dark in here and they have a few TV's if you want to catch your favorite sports team. From what I could see it was a small waiting area plenty of high back booths which provided privacy at each table. Nancy was my server at the Bar she recommended the Mango Margarita... how can I say this without it coming across totally LOONY??? Probably THE BEST Mango Margarita I have EVER had in my life... creamy, just the right blend of sweet with that sharpness of the Tequila that will keep you on your toes. (sigh) I SO wanted another one but knew my long drive back to the IE was going to be torture on this 100 degree day on So. Cal freeways. LORD HELP US ALL!! Why was I tempted to find a AirBnb so I could have another!!??? hahaha I asked her what look good today she shared that she had the Chilaquiles with Chicken this morning with the Verde sauce and it was pretty good. So that's what I got and you know what?! she was RIGHT yet again!!! Their version is served with whole chicken breast flattened (pounded) so it's tender and easy to cut into. I am used to my Chicken Chilaquiles having shredded chicken on it so this was a new one for me. Verde sauce was spicy, perfect compliment to my slushy delicious Mango Margarita. Beans had a good flavor and the chilaquiles were topped with smooth tasting Cojita cheese and one dollop of sour cream. I also had ordered some Guacamole before my main entree was served. My honest opinion regarding this establishment. If you're looking for basic authentic "Mexican food" at an extremely ridiculous high cost. This place would be it. Fajitas for $38+tx Burrito for $20+tax This is basically food from el torito for 3x the cost The ambiance inside this restaurant is dark. The only lighting you have would be by the entrance door. The tamarind margarita was an absolute five star. We loved it! As soon as you sit down, your chips and super delicious salsa appears in front of you. We were in the bar and it was a Friday night with two games on. This is a sports bar and restaurant. My friends are into it. It took a minute to get our order in but it was standing room only in there when we first got there. All these things are great signs that people really like this place. The manager was active and engaging and very friendly. He checked on us multiple times and was not too good to get us salt and pepper shakers and make sure they were clean. My only complaint is that we ordered fajitas but the tortillas came more than five minutes later. Yes, they were busy but they're fajitas. Food cooled a bit before we could dive in. The food was very good though and the tortillas were outstanding. There are homemade corn tortillas which were amazing. My fresh flour tortillas were wonderful too. I would absolutely return here. Its wonderful for a Friday night vibe that you did not know you were looking for. Warning-its heck-a crowded and parking is a challenge. There is a side street just west of the parking lot that might have some spaces for you if the lot is full. We did not have reservations and ended up eating at the bar. I think we got lucky. I have been coming to this place when they first opened years ago before they built the bar. Use to be my fav Mexican Restaurant and visited frequently. I always recommend and stopped recommending because the wait time got longer and longer . I supported strongly taking out and eating in the tent during the pandemic . Since things have opened up the quality and portions have changed . Shrimp small and has been one half the size they use to be . Fish ceviche sucks . Small fish, lots of veggie mix and higher prices . After supporting take out orders during the pandemic they are only taking orders on line and charging service fees . What a disappointment this place e has become . Portions and quality has gone down hill and prices through the roof . I don't mind paying whatever it cost as long as it's fair exchange. I heard great things about Los Compadres, but it wasn't until a b'ness associate asked me to meet him here that I had the pleasure. LC is located on Anaheim near Redondo in LBC. They offer authentic Mexican cuisine amongst a sea of posers. I ordered the sopa de mariscos ($16.95 - fish, shrimp & octopus soup). The sopa was accompanied by homemade tortillas. My associate ordered the molcajete de camarones (shrimp served in a mortle & pestle vessel - sorry, no pic). My soup was excellent. The broth had a nice depth to it from the spices like saffron, paprika, tomatoes, chiles & garlic. I would put this soup against many places in East LA. In addition, there was a ton of seafood. I kept putting the seafood in the awesome tortillas (sorry, no pic), and I kept finding more. Lastly, the sopa was served with the traditional cilantro, onions & limes on the side: 5 Stars. Likewise, my b'ness associate really liked his molcajete. There was a ton of shrimp and it also contained cactus, further adding to the authenticity of the dish. My friend has lived in Latin America like me, and he enjoys good Mexican food. This dish looked much better than that piece of shit Mi Pueblo in Playa del Carmen: 5 Stars. Regarding the ambiance, there is a bar to your left as you enter. I can imagine LC gets pretty lit on big sporting event nights. The remainder of the restaurant is tables of 4, with some seating for larger groups. The place is not that large, and neither is the parking lot: 4 Stars. The service was stellar. Our waitress was super nice as were the remainder of the staff. Our food came out quickly, and additional requests like more tortillas, salsa & chips were handled with a smile 5 Stars. Idk what took me so long to come to LC, but I can't wait to return! The food is excellent, and the menu is extensive.
