Visited Kalaveras for happy hour and had a mixed experience. The drinks and alcoholic slushies on the happy hour menu are very sweet, basically straight sugar, and they're pre-made so you can't customize them at all. Food-wise, the dragon roll was good but super heavy and creamy, not your typical sushi vibe. The churro sandwich was definitely the highlight, really solid dessert. **This is from several months ago.. it was sitting in my draft for a bit... Kalaveras is a chain and there are many locations throughout OC and LA. I've been to the one in Anaheim and Fullerton, and here, Long Beach. One of the nice things about going to a chain, somewhat, is you know what you are getting, no surprises. I like their HH menu and I like their tacos. Pretty decent and pretty consistent. They also offer grilled salmon tacos and it's not something that is common at places that offer fish tacos. I like their ceviche here also, though this one particular time, I came with my coworkers for lunch and we only got tacos.. One minor thing I wish they offer is Taco Tuesdays, some sort of tacos deals. but NBD. Service was good and being inside any Kalaveras, you are kind of transported into another world, and, as stressful as Long Beach for me since I equate it with work, not fun, having lunch in Kalaveras helped me de-stressed for a bit. I've heard about this place which there's a location in the valley. I was in downtown Long Beach and noticed that they had a location here. And as happy hour was happening, it was a nice way to try it out. There was a sign outside mentioned HH specials with dishes at 7.99, not bad. It's a decent size restaurant located at The Pike in the heart of downtown Long Beach right across the street from The Convention Center. They have a small patio area along the front that also looks into the main bar area inside. We checked in with the host which we just wanted drinks and a snack. Bar area was self seat but if we wanted one of the hi-top table in the bar area, we would have to be seated by the hostess. Anyway, bar seating it was. Both the regular menus and HH menu were handed to us. There was one bartender working when we arrive. She was sweet but on the forgetful side. I'm sure she was busy with drink orders so that's a good reason. Later on someone did come and helped out as well. Drinks, the margarita and one of the frozen slush drink. Both at 10.00 for happy hour. Margarita was quite tasty and the frozen drink as well. They both had a kick to it so you taste the alcohol. Food, we shared the loaded carne asada fries. It was quite tasty with everything added to it. Meats were chopped up pieces and all tossed together with fries, chipotle sauce and pico de gallo. Not bad for 7.99. There was a few other plate options that sounded quite nice for HH. We just wanted that one drink but did have to ask a few time for another glass of water. Overall, it's nothing major. I'm sure people love it but it was just ok. Their HH slush drink was decent for the price which I give them that. The salsa had the perfect mild kick, exactly how I like it, and the chips came out hot, fresh, and salted. Nothing makes me saltier than unsalted chips. I've been here plenty of times and have yet to order something I didn't enjoy. Consistency like that deserves recognition! Of the three dishes I tried today: F*ck: enchiladas de camaron - definitely brings the bold and saucy personality. The shrimp were cooked well, lot of depth in flavor, and it's the kind of dish you crave again a few days later. Maybe not my forever pick, but absolutely one I want to keep in rotation. Marry: the barbacoa burrito - this was love at first bite. Packed with flavor, perfectly balanced, and hearty without feeling overly heavy. Every bite was just as good as the first, and if commitment issues weren't a thing, I'd order this every single time without even looking at the menu. Kill: the dragon roll - not bad by any means, it just had tough competition. It didn't stand out the way the other dishes did, and when everything else on the table is demanding your attention, something has to take the fall. Came here after a convention and had an overall average experience. We weren't offered chips when we sat down, and although they do the picture-taking at the front, that wasn't mentioned to us either. We started with the taquito appetizer (three potato, two chicken). They were okay, but nothing memorable. We were able to order from the brunch menu, which was a plus. We had the huevos rancheros and the lechera French toast. The food came out in a decent amount of time, but we didn't get utensils for a while after it arrived. Service felt a bit disorganized overall. The check took a long time to come, which was frustrating since we were ready to leave. The food itself was just okay -- not bad, but not great either. Music and atmosphere was great. My co-resis and I stumbled upon this place after our movie and fortunately for us, it was happy hour! The deals were AMAZING so we knew we had to sample as much of it as we could and luckily there were four of us. We were seated immediately but it was definitely really loud and lively inside. They even had a birthday song at a table nearby! Our server was overall good despite being really busy with other tables too. I specifically chose to try this place because IG kept showing me their new lunch specials. Turns out, this location doesn't offer them. Even though they're listed on the website for this location, our waitress said that the online menu is outdated. This felt like a weird response, but okay. That said, the chips and salsa were ridiculously addicting. I ordered a combination plate with one hard taco (your choice of chicken or potatoes), and a chili relleno. Overall, the food was pretty good. The chili relleno was surprisingly small. It was the smallest I've ever seen it, like the size of a large jalapeno. It was so sad. But I did get an extra hard taco, so I'm not sure if it was to make up for that or if it was added mistakenly. Other items I tried was the birria, which had good flavor, and the asada nachos. The nachos must be eaten ASAP because once it gets cold, it's kinda gross and soggy. So eat fast. Overall, food was pretty good, but about an hour later, I was dying of thirst. Would I go back? It was 5 PM but we had to wait 30 minutes for a table even though there were plenty of open tables. The high tops in the bar area were not open seating for some reason. Only the bar was which I didn't want to sit at. When we finally sat down and ordered our drinks, it took another 30 minutes for our margaritas to arrive which is crazy. Our food came before the drinks which I was not pleased about. We got carne asada fries but swapped in chicken for the carne asada. The fries were soggy but I liked the toppings. The shrimp fajitas were on the salty side though the portions were good and had a good amount of shrimp mixed with onions and bell peppers. My friends who've I haven't seen in a long while decided to meet up and get lunch in Long Beach. I suggested meeting at The Pike Outlets so we can go shopping and then we can see the options for dining. My buddy told me they had a delicious meal and a good time at Kalaveras Mexican Cuisine. We walked inside and there was this beautiful red floral wall so you can take pictures in front of for your social media page(s) and to hashtag #Kalaveras #LongBeach. We were greeted by a friendly gentleman who sat us at a freshly cleaned table. He gave us menus, cups of water and complimentary chips and salsa. Our nice and informative waitress came over and greeted us. Took our drink orders and let us know that since it's Tuesday there's a taco bar in addition to ordering food from the menu. Two of us decided to try the taco bar while the other friend ordered enchiladas. At the taco bar...you give the attendant your slip of how many tacos you've ordered with the waitress. There's chicken, beef, pork and potato options as the main meal in your taco. Then you scoot down to the toppings which included peppers, freshly sliced vegetables and four different sauces with mild to hot flavoring. I've recently learned there was a Kalaveras in Long Beach so I decided to have my Bday dinner here. I've only been to one in San Diego and I loved it. Music was loud, it's huge, and it was packed! They even had live music which was great! I figured, hey let's give this location a chance! Upon calling they were pretty busy for the time I requested but were able to work with me for another time which I really appreciated not just being told no sorry. Upon arriving we were seated fairly quickly but first thing I noticed, it wasn't as packed as I thought... totally fine since we arrived a little later than my reservation time. It was nice they weren't strict on that also. The decor is beautiful! I love the ambiance lighting and the bar is right in front. The drinks and food were delicious! My friend and I decided to go to Kalaveras by the Pike for Cinco de Mayo. We chose this location because we knew it would be lively and the food is amazing! We knew there was going to be a wait so that was no issue, we got in pretty quickly even with it being 30 people in front of us. We were served by a young lady named Kassandra and as sweet as she was she just did not have the best time management skills. We barely got our first drink because she was rushing and just wanted to run off after bringing us water. I had to stop her and just order the drinks because I knew I wasn't going to see her for another 30 mins. She then took our food order and then NEVER offered us a second drink. While she was next to me taking the other tables orders I had ask "can you please come over here when you're done?" & that's when I was able to get another drink. Again, super sweet young lady but just not managing her time wisely. We waited over 30 mins for a check and then I said no more!! I went to the host and asked her to close me out because why am I waiting close to an hour to be closed out???? I think each time I would've enjoyed the food more if the service was actually attentive. I am very confused by everyone else's experience with the service. My most recent time giving it a final go, today, was utterly terrible. I never received utensils or a napkin, even after asking my waiter. We ordered a nacho appetizer and I had no way to clean my hands. I finally just found the server cart myself in the back and stole a stack of napkins because my hands were covered in beans. My waiter never returned to refill my water and when we were ready to leave was nowhere to be found to close out the check. We finally went to the front of the restaurant to close out and the waitress could not find our waiter so the manager had to do it. We never received small plates to share the appetizer and it was some of the worst service I have had at a restaurant. Keep in mind this is a Thursday night at 9-10pm. It was not busy! The food is ALRIGHT for the price. Much better Mexican restaurants in LB with better price points. I feel like I'm paying a premium to be neglected which ruins the experience of my food. They have a very limited menu for the location which is surprising. My favorite kalaveras is the one in Redondo beach. They have a much better ambience and menu. I don't think I'll be returning to the LB one again after giving it the benefit of the doubt 3 times. Shame it's right around the corner from my house. Yall should try Lola's on 4th. Our company came with a reservation for a group of about 20-25 (which is understandably large to accommodate). Stayed at Hyatt Regency Long Beach across the street before our cruise. The hotel gives a 15% discount at Kalaveras among other places, so we popped on in! Flan 10/10 - perfect sweetness, hint of cinnamon and creamy consistency. Probably best I've ever had! Hubs doesn't like flan and he said the same). Strawberries were deliciously sweet. Asada quesadilla 7/10 (not bad; just nothing special) Chips, salsa & guac were average, nothing that stood out. Chips and salsa were free Esquite 7/10 - flavor was good but corn was a little on the crunchy side. Steak fajitas for the hubs - he killed it. The steak was good. Paloma for the hubs was super strong. Pricing was reasonable, especially with the discount. Vibes were good, great music playing. Saw a few birthday celebrations & they come out singing like you're getting VIP bottle service which was fun. Came here late at night, and our waiter was very sweet even though we came at like 10pm on a Monday night. We indulged in a Strawberry Margarita pitcher to share between four people. These things are awesome! They taste great, have lots of alcohol, and are a great deal to share with your friends. For food, we started with the Queso Fundido, which was good. Although not super busy in the dining room at 640 on Wednesday, the bar was busy for the tail end of happy hour. Our cute server seemed frazzled. The sauce on the wings was pretty spicy and I really had to drink my husband's water before my glass got filled again. Why ration the water? Bring me a half liter! Then we tasted and raved about the food. The wings are great they were just buffalo medium, but zingy. The wings were not super crispy but dry like I prefer before being sauced. Little or no breading, a count of 8. Not tiny wings but not huge either. Two or three bites. Good! The chicken tinga taquitos were fantastic, a drizzle of crema over red corn tortillas wrapped around white meat chicken. Crispy outside, inside very tender with a nice little salad in the middle. Did not try the green sauce that came along with it, just not my fav. The happy hour portion of the quesa birria tacos is four tiny tacos with a tiny consomme and a little bit of shredded cabbage. Beware the thinly sliced long pieces of jalapeno hiding in the salad! I really enjoyed the tacos, cheesy and nice tender shredded beef. The consommé was not overly salty. It was good messy fun and I got completely filled up! I ordered a side of Spanish rice and it was bland. So I doused it in the yummy salsa and took half home with three half taquitos. Because we got full! Service was hard to flag down and don't check on us. But the food was great and you really only need one of this giant cocktails! We swung by the Pike Outlets and saw this nice Mexican restaurant on Pine Ave in front of the Long Beach Convention center. The place was packed still at 2:45 so must be a good place to eat. We were seated immediately when we came in but really looked busy at this time. We ordered the Wet Burritos for me and my wife from a nice waitress named Linda that was eager to take our orders. Ambiance carried a Peruvian design but since Valentine's Day is fast approaching they have a welcoming backdrop of a Valentine themed wall at the entrance for you to take a picture of. The atmosphere inside are composed of locals and people visiting the outlet stores. They have a sweet person roaming around taking pictures if you liked the pictures. Our orders came in 15 minutes prepared and presented nicely! We will definitely come back for more when we are in town. It was easily enough for two people. Chips and salsa were plentiful and quite tasty. Service met expectations did not exceed. Price was a little high, but given the location I can't complain. My only major criticism, and I'm not going to take off a point for it, is the weird bathroom. The entire men's room is completely wallpapered with plastic thick greenery.
