The Hawaiian mahi mahi was incredibly flavorful--definitely the highlight of the meal and something I'd order again without hesitation. We also tried a few appetizers, including the poke nachos and calamari. Both were really good and a great way to start the meal. Service was on point--our server was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our visit. Overall, great food and great service. Let me be very clear -- if you value your comfort, your peace and basic human decency as a paying customer, think twice before walking through these doors. From the moment I walked in I was interrogated by a staff member named Sarah who approached me multiple times demanding to know what I was doing. That alone set the tone for the entire night. It got worse. A man approached me claiming to be the manager stating he had a problem with me and did not want me dining there. Come to find out -- he doesn't even work there. Nobody knew who he was. He had absolutely no authority to say anything to me yet staff allowed it to happen without question. Then a random female guest -- again, someone who does not work there -- took it upon herself to relocate and sit directly next to me in an attempt to intimidate me. She went as far as telling staff that I should not be serviced because I was documenting my experience. And a waitress actually agreed with her. A paying customer was nearly denied service because of another random guest's personal feelings. Let that sink in. I never got to eat. Not because the food wasn't available -- but because the environment was so hostile and uncomfortable that my spirit would not allow it. There is a saying -- do not eat where you feel uncomfortable. I lived that tonight. The establishment was also hosting a private event which may explain some of the territorial energy -- but it does not excuse any of what I experienced. None of it. Now -- in the spirit of fairness -- Andrew the bartender was a 10 out of 10. Professional, attentive, hustling hard all night and never missed a beat checking on me. Scott, a longtime loyal regular, heard what was happening and came directly to me. He sat with me, validated everything I experienced, walked me out personally and took care of my entire tab out of his own kindness. Those two restored a small piece of my faith. But two good people cannot carry an establishment that has this many unresolved issues with who they allow through the door -- staff, guests or otherwise. I would not recommend this place. I tried Gladstone's out this evening and am SO glad I did. I had the macadamia crusted mahi mahi with broccoli and gladstone rice (pilaf). It was absolutely delicious. It was all very, very good-the fish, the veggie and the rice. The service (by Andrew) was fine. So was the atmostphere. I had a nice view of the water. Music played in the bar area. I could hear it in the background in the restaurant section, but it wasn't distracting or loud. The next time I'm in the area, I'll be sure to return. read more

It's been awhile since I visited the Long Beach area. During lunch we chose Gladstone's restaurant. They have a good reputation for seafood. We ordered a Sourdough loaf, Crab Cakes, Fish Tacos, Soup and Salad. The bread was yummy and warm with butter on the side. The Crab Cakes were crispy on the outside and moist in the inside. The Fish Tacos were served on soft corn tortillas and topped with diced tomato and red onion. The service was great. We didn't have reservations, but we were able to get a table in the patio with a spectacular view of the Rainbow Harbor. Be sure to check their "Crabby" menu for daily specials on food and drinks. Haven't been here for years! We decided to have brunch here on a Friday. Long Beach weather was hot, 87 degrees and climbing. Greeted and seated. Decided to sit outside at the patio. Luckily there were umbrellas to provide some shade or else the heat would be unbearable. All in one shot, ordered a beer, cocktails, calamari appetizer, fish soup and fish and chips. All was served within 15 to 20 minutes. I had all the time in the world to relax for brunch. The ambiance was that of a summer vibe but still clearly in the winter season. That is So Cal weather for you. Got to love it!! No complaints on the food and service. The best part was the service. Big Kudos to James who was our server. He was professional and kind. Always attended to us in a way where we would not even had to look for him. He was always there asking on what we need and what we wanted. A true professional! Give that man a raise$$! :) Overall, i would definitely come back to this location. You over look the harbor and Shoreline village. Nice place to take a date. Good for long conversations. The Queen Mary blows its horn every hour. Its pretty cool. Parking is limited. First, James our server was personable and did a good job however management put him in bad position. Food and drinks were moderate to average, and we had seafood, which is what 'they're known for' that was minimal, and overheated as it was sitting before served. It was first time eating at this restaurant with friends. We were hungry after walking all morning at the Japanese Classic Auto Show. The service is great the food was good. We all had fish and chips, fish tacos, and one person got a burger. The coleslaw was not too fresh and was lacking seasoning. It must of been slow the week before, most likely. Went with friends from out of town . On a Wednesday evening we sat inside and our table had a nice view. I had the grilled swordfish with vegetables and mashed potatoes. Added a cup of clam chowder . The chowder remained excellent. The swordfish was good the mash & begs just ok . One friend wanted lobster but they were out of fresh so he had lobster tail. Which he enjoyed. The other Frind ordered a salad with shrimp and crab meet he was very happy with it service was very good and our waiter navigated the lobster issue expertly. We were excited to eat at Gladstone's as we hadn't been to one in years (decades?). First, this location is great. It was like a summer night on the first day of spring, weather was perfect, and we got an outdoor table during sunset with a great view of the Queen Mary. We made reservations and appreciate that the hostess sat us outside upon request. I was surprised that the restaurant was pretty empty inside being in such a great location and such great weather. Of our dishes - poke nachos, macadamia crusted mahi mahi, and swordfish - the poke nachos were the best. Beautiful presentation and very tasty. The swordfish was good, not the best we've had. The broccoli sides were really good. And of course the fresh bread was delicious. The mahi mahi itself was really good and had a thick macadamia "crust" but it was presented with a vanilla bean sauce that I think had a balsamic drizzle on top. I did see that description on the menu and looking back I probably should've asked them to prepare it with a citrus/lemon sauce instead. May just be me (and my family members who tried it), but I just wasn't a fan of vanilla bean sauce with my fish! We had leftovers so I asked my waitress if they still wrap leftovers in the shape of aluminum foil animals. She shared that this used to be part of the training when hired but they no longer train employees to do it. She had been with Gladstones for a while, though and had been trained so she offered to do it - I had to say yes! My family members were mortified and got quite a laugh out of it but I thought it was great that she brought back my mahi mahi leftovers as an aluminum foil swan! . I later looked up this location and I don't think it is owned by the larger Gladstones family of restaurants so maybe that's why their employees aren't trained, but I say bring back the aluminum foil animal leftovers! Clam chowder was boring and gross. No potato?! What in the world ! Meal said there would be scallops and there wasn't any. Told it was a typo. The shrimp was so overcooked it was crunchy. The salmon had no taste The crab cake was odd. The broccoli was so over cooked I couldn't pick it up with my fork - also no seasoning or butter The coconut shrimp was obviously out of a box and very oily. But it was still better than anything Else we ordered. The service was not great but okay. As we were eating someone tried to move a heater while it was still on right next to our grand daughter. Had to move her out of the way. Side note but still very off putting - why are you using plastic ramekins!! For 40$ a plate I expect a better presentation. Would have had a better meal at Applebees ! I'm not the pickiest person and most of my reviews almost always includes how the staff treats us. I almost didn't write this review but here goes. We made a reservation for Gladstones and when we showed up the first hostess seemed shocked but also seemed new, no problem. She asked a second hostess for help and we witnessed her have an attitude with the first one and was even rude to a couple other customers. The location had seating, inside and outside. We didn't look inside but outside things were disorganized and obstructed the flow of moving around. Our table was uneven by at least an inch (things kept rolling off). We get seated and it took almost 20 minutes to even get water. And maybe another 10 to get the bread, which was hard as a rock and had no real flavor to it. At the same time, we got our calamari and it was lacking in flavor. Our waitress told us that ALL of their fish was fresh seafood and gotten from California, If you look at the menu, you can see this is false. When we stated as much, she responded rudely. We ordered our food, which took another 30 minutes.my husband got the seafood pasta which was not good, no flavor and my husband was very nauseous/sick after. I got the Parmesan crusted fish and not only was the bottom burnt but the top was too soft from the butter on it. Came here after a morning at the aquarium. Really cool vibe being right on the water in the marina, definitely a good spot for a seafood place. We were seated quickly and our server was pretty good about making sure we were taken care of. The highlight of our meal was the Boston Clam Chowder, really nice. Everything else was okay, the seasonings were on point though. The shrimp in both of our dishes were pretty tough which was a bummer since they looked so good. My experience was NOT good. We had reservations for 5pm and we were about 10 minutes late. They sat us right away so we were excited. We had high expectations for everything from that point forward. We figured out what we wanted and sat for 30 min waiting for someone to take our order. One waitress helped a table right next to us and never looked our way every time she passed by. One young lady, Alicia, saw us and came over to see if we were ready to order and was the best waitress. She was attentive and took care of everything we asked for. She was really sweet. The food was tasteless. We ordered Parmesan crusted halibut with mashed potatoes and broccoli and the seafood trio and it wasn't good. Luckily our waiter was very kind and apologetic, unfortunately can't say the same about the woman manager, she mentioned her GM "Scott" was "on the phone" not sure what that meant but we weren't met with much empathy. Their food was absolutely amazing. I enjoyed everything we got with no complaints. The service was very welcoming and our server was very sweet and patient with us. Although Gladstones (Long Beach) has many flaws, I had a very pleasant experience. The ocean view is gorgeous; the complimentary sourdough bread is phenomenal; and the Lobster, Shrimp and Crab Linguine ($34.95) is surprisingly generous with its plump, fresh seafood. [The Good] The Lobster, Shrimp and Crab Linguine is superb! This pasta tastes generous and rich. Every bite was filled with lobster and/or crab. The shrimp was very fresh, large and plump. And this bouncy pasta's gentle, savory sauce had a pleasant aftertaste of fresh lobster. It was very delightful. Next, the complimentary Sourdough Bread is so tasty! It's very fresh. And I loved its thin crisp crust and fluffy insides. The Sourdough Bread taste shines very brightly. Accompanied by some salted butter, the flavor just happily bursts forward. Yum! In addition, the Hot Fudge Sundae ($8) is definitely worth your money! It's humongous! It can easily be shared between four people. This Hot Fudge Sundae comes with many scoops of fresh vanilla bean ice cream, whip cream, delectable nuts, and a drizzle of chocolate syrup. Lastly, Gladstones (Long Beach) contains a beautiful ambiance. The view is amazing. Also, most decor is shiny and captivating. It's a very beautiful location inside and outside. [The Average] First, Staff is helpful and charming. However, staff appeared to be stretched thin. My group and I did not see our server much. And it was difficult to waive anyone down at times. Fortunately, all the food arrived around 21 minutes. Next, Gladstones (Long Beach) is partially dirty. The floors are well-swept and most tables are shiny; however, I found bread crumbs everywhere. For example, when I was seated, my table and chair still had crumbs. The older chairs even had old dusty crumb bits just lingering around its crevices. [The Bad] I do not recommend the Boston Clam Chowder ($12.95) and Crispy Calamari ($18.95). The Boston Clam Chowder tastes cheap. I barely found any clams. Prepackaged Grocery Store Clam Chowder has triple the portions of clams than Gladstones. I appreciated that the Boston Clam Chowder is thick, creamy, and well-seasoned; however, it's definitely not award winning nor special. In addition, the Crispy Calamari is very average for its expensive price. The amount is well-portioned, but Gladstones (Long Beach) uses very tiny, thinly cut squid. This ridiculously small calamari causes its tasty, dry breading to be its main flavor. Thankfully, the House Cocktail Sauce and Chipotle Mayo added that much needed moisture to such a poor appetizer. Then, there's the poor maintenance of the cups and menus. It feels like Gladstones (Long Beach) is penny pinching. For example, my water cup had a cracked piece on its lip. The cup also had a tiny cracked hole on its side which caused water to perpetually drip out onto the table. Staff only noticed the puddle of water until I brought it to their attention. The menus look old, worn down, and cracked. And the cloth napkins and plates appeared somewhat eroded and old. [Conclusion] Despite the many problems at Gladstones (Long Beach), I found myself pleasantly surprised. Gladstones (Long Beach) definitely has problems, but there's genuine hidden potential. The lovely ambiance; complimentary fresh sourdough bread; and generous Lobster, Shrimp and Crab Linguine ($34.95) were truly extraordinary. Stopped in for happy hour (Crabby Hour) twice during our Long Beach vacation. Seated ourselves at the bar to a lukewarm reception both times by the same male bartender. He doesn't act very excited to have customers, even though the bar is empty. Fortunately the first visit he handed us off to lovely Natalie, who took great care of us from there. I started with the happy hour Mai Tai, a fantastic $6 pour that I would order over and over again. Husband had the $6 happy hour margarita, which was fine but actually too strong for him! Funny I never have that problem. We wanted to try a variety of appetizers and with Natalie's guidance, ordered one of almost everything on the happy hour menu. The soup sampler with a cup of red fish and a cup of white clam, the chowder sampler was a great value at $6. The soups were really yummy too, and husband ordered them again on our second visit. We tried the deviled eggs $6, a serving of four half eggs, deviled with a little lobster mixed in. They were tasty but not special. No complaints but didn't warrant ordering a second time. Next up was the jalapeno poppers, also $6. Bacon wrapped, creamy inside, grill marks and a balsamic drizzle, these were perfect poppers in every traditional way. We ordered the steamed clams and mussels, a very large $10 bowl of shellfish with a very boring broth. We ate the bivalves and toast points but weren't impressed. We wanted to try the "real crab" California roll, and it was very good and also only $10. I have paid $25 for similar rolls! Again, nice but not special. My favorite dish, the one I would order again and again was the shrimply tacos. For $9 this dish is fantastic, with three big shrimp in each of two tacos, Chipotle mayo and mango salsa with some cabbage blend underneath. Loved loved loved these tacos, and ordered them the next time as well. I was especially impressed with the quality corn tortillas and their proper preparation, they held up beautifully under the weight of these well-dressed tacos. On our second visit, male bartender was our server and we got through the meal, but often had to hunt him down because he didn't check in with us often. This time the only new addition was the jerk chicken wings. Wowza, what a rich and flavorful sauce on these wings. Hot but deeply savory with almost a coffee richness or mole kind of spice. A surprise for a seafood place this dish was excellent. A good portion, at least seven meaty wings for $9. I would prefer them crispier, but they were devoured either way. Came in for dinner on Monday evening just before the sunset. The patio was rather full and it was hot out, so I opted to sit inside. I thought it was going to be good especially with how busy the patio was and it being right on the water. Boy was I wrong. When I first sat down, I noticed that there was still a dirty napkin that the last patrons left underneath the table. I didn't really mind it because I was alone. However, the napkin and utensils they gave me had a stain. Because it was only on the napkin, I let it go. I ordered a drink from the bar, and found that it wasn't cleaned properly... there were still lip marks on the glass. That was just foul. It took a long while for my server to come over, and take my order. They must have been extremely short staffed because my server was serving the entire section I was sitting in, and there were a good number of tables. He really did his best so I was really patient, and was also in no rush. I ordered the macadamia nuts crusted mahi mahi, and my server said it was supposed to be really good. I was thoroughly disappointed. The crust had zero taste, the actual mahi mahi was overcooked because it was dry and hard, and also lacked the normal subtle sweetness mahi mahi usually has. It was accompanied by some greens which were obviously not fresh but previously frozen then steamed, and mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were stiff and kind of cold. The tahini sauce that came with the dish just tasted like a creamy butter sauce? There was nothing special about this dish. The sourdough bread was pretty good! Honestly much better than my entree so I ate half of it. I had the brown sugar old fashioned (made with Makers) which just tasted like a regular, but slightly watered down, old fashioned. I was ready to call it a night and skip dessert to find it elsewhere because the food was so subpar. But my server offered a comp dessert because I was waiting for so long all night. I've dined at Gladstone's many times and have always had a great experience. While I typically get the Queensway Salad (big enough to feed 3 people, our party ordered shrimp enchiladas and swordfish! The food was delicious, love the fresh bread, and a special shout out to our server, Jesse P. Jesse was warm and welcoming and provided excellent service! The general manager, Scott Hewitt, runs a great establishment, had always accommodated special event and large group needs, and extends himself to ensure the guest dining experience is always wonderful! I was shocked by the condition of this Gladstones. My family and I stopped in on a Sunday around 5:00pm for an early dinner. While waiting for our table in the bar area, it was immediately clear the restaurant was in disarray. Multiple tables were covered with piles of dirty dishes and glasses that hadn't been cleared, the bar itself was sticky and unclean, and the bartender didn't acknowledge us for over 20 minutes. The bathrooms so incredibly dirty I decided not to use them. On the way there, you pass the kitchen and what I saw was honestly alarming. There were old baskets of food sitting out, hamburger buns on the floor, and the entire area looked messy and unsanitary. And entire back part of the restaurant smelled like garbage. After already waiting about 45 minutes for our table, seeing (and smelling) the kitchen area was enough for us to decide to leave. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and attentive on this busy Valentine's evening although the restaurant was only about 80% full. All the delivered dishes, although having fancy ingredients, had the feel of a homemade potluck, which really made me cringe ($18 for lobster deviled eggs that tasted like Sriracha was a big miss). The server and host were great for the record. But... that was one of the worst meals ive ever had. The wonton tuna nachos had stale wonton, too much sauce and not fresh tuna. The actual ahi tuna entree had gone bad. The French fries were old and cold. The only thing "fresh" was the chowder and it was so thin that it was basically milk and tasted awful. Never come here to do a Buffet Event, so unprofessionally Run for your food service. Our conference prepaid at Gladston's! You do not have proper staff, seriously for our event. Who do you have running a huge buffet, GM! It was Novice night for this seafood buffet. It started at 7ish, an hour and half later , 8:30 PM. I am finally at the buffet, I was in line. Some of the items on the Buffet were out and no refills? What? I spoke to one of the Mangers, please go to the kitchen and make more. She said, "The Kitchen is closed!" At 8:30 PM, with a food buffet. I have never in my LIFE had this situation in private food service before. Our once a year Conference this year was held in Long Beach, it Ruined our lovely private event at Gladston's. I did not even get my complete 70 dollar worth of buffet items, I should have gone to Ruth Chris for my dinner. Gladston's. You presented yourself as Novice in your brand. I'd say that a three star rating was pretty accurate. First, we arrived a little after 6 and were able to get a table right away. That kind of says something, though. Our waiter was amazing. I can't have alcohol due to health reasons and medications, so I ordered a Shirley Temple, he brought me another without me having to ask. That was awesome. My friend ordered a Mai Tai. Boy do I miss a cocktail! The drinks were delicious! At least mine was. Our bread and food pretty much all came out at the same time, BUT it was super hot which is a plus. This is now the part where I have to be a bit negative. The food was just ok. I remember how delicious this food was so many years ago. My friend got the Hawaiian Fish and it wasn't very flavorful. His clam chowder was good, but for the amount compared to price, not so good. I liked what I had but because my friend's food was mediocre at best, I gave him some of mine. Mine was very filling, but I didn't care for the shrimp. They tasted like the shrimp I'd get in the freezer section of Walmart. I loved where we were seated, by a huge window with amazing views of the Queen herself, by queen I mean Mary of course. I did use the bathroom. It wasn't the cleanest but it wasn't dirty either. We had the poke nachos and the jerk chicken wings, food was just ok, nothing to write home about. I just remember this place being amazing and trust I would not go again. The nachos were very sweet and the chips were greasy. The wings were tasteless. We held our team lunch here yesterday for 39 people. The kitchen got all the food out promptly, the service was great. Scott the GM was there and made sure to say hello and that everything was going well. Ava the main server took amazing care of the team and all their wishes.
