We came here because we were in the area for a convention. I knew it was DineLA time, so we decided to try this place because it was listed and we like the menu. When we got there, we agreed that the place is extremely inviting and the view of the marina is breathtaking. We didn't have a reservation on a Sunday evening, but we didn't have to wait more than about 15 minutes for a table. We were 4, so we orders one of everything on the DineLA menu. We went out to check out the Reef after not having gone in so many years, and we were very pleasantly excited about the renovation of the space and the menu options. It's easy to forget how beautiful it is dining on the water looking at downtown Long Beach from a distance, and the Reef does not disappoint. We had a waterside table on a balmy night for LA Restaurant Week and we were delighted by their price fixe menu for that week. Us older folk prefer fewer choices and still delicious options. They had four choices for starters, 5 entree and two dessert options to choose from. I chose shrimp rolls for my appetizer, top sirloin for my entrée and pineapple upside down cake with vanilla ice cream for my dessert, Pat had the pineapple fried rice, and the Keylime pie we shared the brussels sprouts along with the shrimp roll and chips. We were surprised first by the shrimp rolls, smaller version of lobster rolls, but these were served on those buttery Hawaiian bread rolls. A huge heap mound of chips accompanied them and between the brussels sprouts and this tasty starter, we both had plenty to share. My Top Sirloin was top rate, cooked medium, rare to perfection, served with a side of cilantro rice and broccolini. Boomer loved the broccolini (did we mention dog friendly?) Pat's entrée was the surprise, the pineapple shrimp rice served in half a pineapple! (After tasting it, It was an instant choice for my next visit!) Huge juicy shrimp and fried rice with pineapple throughout, seasoned perfectly. It was so delicious! We are almost too full for dessert. (Who am I kidding? I am never too full for dessert) The pineapple upside down cake was an individual cake about 4 inches in diameter and a scoop of generous scoop of vanilla ice cream, it was easily shareable. Pat did not share her Keylime pie, Although it was a sizable portion, and I refuse to beg. We were impressed by the incredible service, they even brought Boomer out a bowl of water, though he preferred the broccolini. If you haven't been in a while, you deserve a visit. We came to The Reef for brunch and had a really enjoyable meal overall. It had been at least a decade since any of us had been. And it had been closed for a while. They definitely spent some money refreshing the interior from the dark and carpeted place it was before. We tried the fish & chips, blackened local halibut sandwich, double-patty smash burger, clam chowder and Caesar salad, along with a couple bottles of Sauvignon Blanc. The blackened halibut sandwich was the standout for us -- a thick piece of fish, nicely seasoned, and served with very good fries. The fish & chips were also excellent, with a crisp golden batter and generous portions. Everything came out looking great, as you can see in the photos. A special shout out for Amanda, our server, who was fantastic. She was friendly, attentive and kept everything moving smoothly throughout brunch. Great service really makes a difference, especially with a group. My only real feedback was the temperature where we were seated. While the view of dtlb was amazing, it was pretty warm in that section and there didn't seem to be much ventilation or air conditioning, so it became a little uncomfortable as the meal went on. On a warm Long Beach day, some additional airflow would make a big difference. Otherwise, a very good waterfront brunch: good food, great service from Amanda and a beautiful setting. My siblings and I totally enjoyed this newly renovated restaurant! We were seated at a perfect table with a harbor view! The restaurant itself beautifully decorated with ocean theme very warm. Our server Amanda was an absolute delight attentive and friendly!!!! We had a couple of cocktails and entrees! Everything and I mean everything was absolutely delicious!! Recently reopening after a long hiatus for brunch, lunch, happy hour, and dinner during weekends, the Reef Restaurant serves up a modern medley of dishes, with a killer view. Originally opening in 1958 on the Pier J peninsula man-made landmass that houses both the Queen Mary and Carnival Cruises port (if one takes a Carnival cruise out of 'Los Angeles', it's really here in Long Beach), the restaurant dining room closed before the pandemic, with the space only being open for private events since then. Our bus from downtown dropped us off a bit early, so as we explored the grounds while waiting for the restaurant to open, we noticed a small wedding ceremony was being performed in an outdoor garden area...so private events are still happening. But the restaurant portion has been closed until now, just reopening last weekend. Current hours are 11:30 - 9:00 pm, Th - Su. We came back around 11:30, and the doors had been opened and staffed for a bit. We put our names down to the friendly hostess, Toni. Others were waiting in the comfortable lounge as well, and we got seated third (first outside) soon after. The waterfront dining views were outstanding, similar to dining at the Queen Mary, with views of the downtown Long Beach skyline. We got to experience a beautiful California June day, with a large umbrella providing shade and ocean breezes providing comfort. George introduced himself as our waiter and took our drink order, and soon after, our food order. It was brunch menu time, which meant some special items were on the menu, one of which we ordered. It wasn't cheap, but my wife and I agreed that the food and drink were fabulous. Bottomless Mimosas ($22) - they didn't require everyone at the table to get it, so got it just for myself, and it was refreshing, not too sweet and cloying, nor too carbonated. I started out with the Dragon Fruit & Watermelon, and loved it, ending up getting two refills. Then tried the passion fruit & tarragon (next best) and the pineapple & Jalapeno (least favorite). All came in a large wine goblet (instead of the traditional flutes), and it was kinda crazy how the smell of the tarragon and the jalapeno (separately) hit your sense of smell as you tilted the glass to your mouth. It makes me appreciate the thinking behind creating a great drink, and this was definitely that....the best bottomless drinks I might have ever had. One in a Melon ($15) - this was my wife's cocktail and she really enjoyed it, slowly sipping it throughout her meal. It also has watermelon in it (seeing a pattern that the Reef uses watermelon really well in their drinks). It was also one of the prettiest drinks I've seen in a while. Half Dozen Chilled Oysters ($18) - one is at the mercy of the supplier, and these Pacific oysters were just OK, though definitely fresh, with a good mignonette sauce. The shucking could have been slightly better, with a shell piece in one of the oysters. Brunch Board for Two ($85) - felt like I was at a buffet, except with freshly prepared, expensive ingredient dishes, shareable for two. The eggs benedicts were OK. The 1/2 lb of snow crab was basically one cluster and was OK quality (had been cleaned of barnacles, etc, but the meat inside had shriveled a bit). The Teriyaki Wagyu Top Sirloin, served medium by choice, was excellent, reminding me of a very well prepared tri-tip, but more tender. The blackened shrimp skewers was also excellent: plump headless shell on shrimp grilled over an open flame. The sides were two pieces of waffles, crisp bacon strips, and two breakfast spuds (kinda like thick preformed hashbrowns) with sour cream. It was enough for the two of us. Service was excellent throughout, with both George (and later Lucille) clearing our plates as soon as we were done, and making sure we were doing OK. Payment is done at the table, with no added surcharges or fees that we could see. Because it wasn't so busy, we were able to enjoy the ambience a bit more, never feeling rushed. My wife and I had a really enjoyable time at the new Reef Restaurant, and hope to be back soon. read more

Excellent location between the Queen Mary and Hotel Maya with the same great views. I had been there years ago when it was a restaurant. It's now an event space and we were there for a private event for lunch. It's spacious with a big foyer, large bar and a very large banquet room as well as an outdoor patio. They have a 2nd floor but I didn't get a chance to go up. The staff were friendly and efficient. The food was good. There's plenty of parking. This was our first opportunity to revisit the newly reopened Reef. We were greeted and then seated promptly. The view over the Los Angeles River, then across, towards Long Beach, is spectacular! We were there for lunch. From prior experience, the evening experience is even more so. Our server, Gabby, approached us promptly. She took our beverage orders, returning promptly with our drinks. My wife ordered the Baby Back Ribs, while I had the Smash burger. We both started with the clam chowder. The clam chowder was passable, but not on par with The Fish Company or Walt's Wharf. My Smash Burger was flat out good. This baby was BIG! My wife's Baby Back ribs were also big. They too were good. They prepared with a caramelized Mezcal, not BBQ sauce. She prefers BBQ sauce. Our sever was also the bartender. Very nice and attractive young lady. Everyone here was friendly. Food: the chargrilled oysters- 7. They were small and just ok. No real flavor. Bowl of clam chowder soup - 9. Thick and full of clams and potatoes. Savory and just yummy. Calamari-9. Crunchy and savory. Combination of Calamari, jalapeños and onions. Aolil sauce ok. Pineapple bowl fried rice with shrimp -7. Flavorful but a bit mushy. Too many peas for my taste. The shrimp was great. Hot honey chicken and waffles-6. Chicken a bit under cooked. Waffle was great. Overall 7 on the food. Would like more breakfast choices for brunch. The bottomless mimosa with cranberry juice was -10. Worth it. Mijito was -10. If I could rate it a 0 I would. Horrible place. DONT GO. Jonathan the manager and his people refused to let my dad in including calling the police to remove him which was absolutely unnecessary because they weren't being disruptive. My dad and his friend simply showed the proof of their reservation (attached) and the manager kept refusing service without a valid reason. It was not because of clothing because both were dressed professionally in button ups and slacks and it wasn't because they made a late reservation because they'd done it with anticipation. This is past offensive it is also a racist move on their part where a Latino and middle eastern man with accents apparently are not allowed to enter this place without a given reason save for the assumption of 'using the place for parking' . What is that kind of excuse if your potential clients are presenting their reservation to you? It is not only humiliating but downright ridiculous. Do better read more

I was excited to see The Reef finally reopen after being closed for so long. For Father's Day, I brought my dad and my husband, hoping for a great experience at one of Long Beach's most iconic waterfront spots. The good: reservations were easy, the drinks were good, and the view is still absolutely beautiful. The location remains one of the best in Long Beach. Unfortunately, the food and service left a lot to be desired. I ordered the chargrilled oysters, and they were honestly the worst oysters I've ever had. They were extremely salty and completely overwhelmed any flavor of the oyster itself. I would strongly suggest either reworking the recipe or removing them from the menu altogether. The biggest frustration was the timing of the food. We ordered two pineapple fried rice dishes, but only one came out with the rest of the meal. The second one, which was for me and my daughter, didn't arrive until nearly 15 minutes later. Considering the restaurant was mostly empty, this was especially disappointing. I eventually had to ask for a manager, who did apologize and comp the dish. Overall, the beautiful view wasn't enough to make up for the disappointing food and service. Since they've only recently reopened, I'm hoping they work out the kinks. For now, I'm not sure I'll be back and will probably wait to see how future reviews look. read more

Just had dinner here and I was totally disappointed, this place has alot of potential. the location is beautiful but the food and service suffer dramatically. The martini was served in a smaller glass and was not totally full. On top of that it was warm. Who wants to drink a warm Martini and it took forever to get. I asked for water and never received it. We came here for a family wedding celebration in the Harborview Ballroom. Free parking available onsite. I believe the family wedding had at least 25 tables. So the lobby area got crowded as the bar and drink area is L shaped and narrow to walk through to the ballroom. Shrimp appetizers were being served and open bar with also coffee, tea, lemonade and mint infused water available on a table. Our entire table had pre-ordered the salmon and it was humongous and very moist. We had mashed potatoes and bok choy as sides. The food and service were very good and the wedding also had dancing as there is a dance floor. We had the absolute best time dining at the Reef last night. We had a party of 8, 4 adults and 4 kids, and the entire restaurant was super kind, helpful and informative. Not to mention the ambiance was super dreamy. The menu had a lot of delicious items (try the pineapple fried rice) and fantastic cocktails (the paid vacation was not only tasty, but the presentation and "experience" were a fun surprise). Glad to have the Reef back! Newly remodeled, clean, fresh and welcoming! Went for Happy Hour, sat on terrace. Spectacular view and atmosphere- I could stay all day. Limited Happy Hour menu- (not a slider or a fry on the menu!). I had the wings. I asked that they be fried crispy- not! I had to pop them in air fryer at home. My watermelon drink was tasty, enough alcohol and well priced at $7. The pineapple cake and roasted oysters were really good too! Our server was a very nice young lady but needed help. We had to wait so long for straws and 2nd rounds- missing the 6 pm HH end while we waited. Eventually walked to the bar get our own or asking the manager for assistance. Overall still a great time. The ocean views are gorgeous with great ambiance. The happy hour menu was fairly priced. The shrimp mini rolls tasted great, a little too much mayo for me but my partner loved them. The shrimp cocktail was also tasty. Now, heres where the problem came in. The chargrilled oysters. Apparently, their definition of chargeilled is "moderately warmed, and depressingly undercooked". It's as though they whispered "warm" in its vicinity before serving this to me. I assume upon seeing chargrilled it would be a nice cooked texture with the sauce and cheese being melted well atop it. I was sorely mistaken. It was undercooked, very cold the most cooked thing was the grilled lemon it came with. It was also super gritty which goes to show a poor shucking or collection process. I also had severe stomach pains afterwards, throwing up for a couple hours once I got home. My partner was fine which lead me to trace this horrible pain to you guessed it, bad oysters. We have been coming to the Reef for more than 20 years until it closed just before the pandemic to only focus on banquets and wedding receptions. Very disappointed but understood. The family stopped by last night hoping to rekindle all of our fond memories and start new ones DID NOT HAPPEN. It did not feel like a restaurant. The food felt more like happy hour food you eat at a bar, that is free, to get you to buy the drinks. The Reef had some staples that used to get us through the door eagerly looking forword to the meal - fresh hot bread served right away at the table - delicious pesto butter to go with it. This amost made it worth the trip - fresh calamari, lightly battered and seasoned to go with our cocktails - a bowl of hot delicious new england clam chowder THEN - a nicely prepared slice of prime rib nicely presented with all the appropriate trimmings - lastly, a fresh slice of cheese cake to go with my espresso NONE of this happened.... just awful The food truly felt like it was old and perhaps left overs from the days banquet receptions and they were trying to dump the food, which in my youth i would expect at happy hours at bar/restaurants but there, the food was free and it was expected. HERE IS WHAT WE DID GET - Cocktails were good and reasonably priced - incredible view of the city (can't change that) - Calamari was strange. Lightly breaded with little or no seasoning mixed with pieces of breaded onion and breaded jalapenos. Onio rings, breaded jalapeno all with lighly seasoning and cold. I don't know - crispy brussel sprouts that were also cold, not crispy and with a strange tasting sauce - we had the top sirloin because they were not serving prime rib. The sirloin was cold , pre sliced and had gristle throughout. Felt like they presliced it so we would not notice. Terrible THIS WAS TOO MUCH we did send this back with no new order to replace. My wife and i shared my - fish and chips which seemed like the freshest ltem we ordered but it had lttle if no seasoning. We only ate about 1/2 - we finished it off with a slice of chocolate cake that was not finished even when shared with the whole family Lastly. This was almost FUNNY, if it weren't so surreal. We valet parked our cars. Great place to enjoy good food and an iconic view of Long Beach habour. Drink menu offered unique new and specific classics along with good wine options specific to the region. Our server Lucille was genuine, kind a eager to be sure we enjoyed our experience for dinner. We enjoyed Pinapple Bacon fried rice (in a grilled pinnapple) which is a 'special' and also a simple Blackened Mahi sandwich prepared to perfection. We booked our October wedding reception at the Harborview Ballroom at the Reef in February and worked with Maria over the past few months. Maria was very responsive throughout the entire planning process and made sure that everything was in place for us to have a smooth event. She was very knowledgeable and helped us execute our vision. She allowed us to tour the ballroom multiple times, made recommendations of where specific vendors usually set up and answered all of our questions. On the day of the wedding, the staff was very attentive and communicative with the teams that were setting up. There were a few questions/last minute changes that the staff addressed in a timely manner. The reception was beautiful. Everything came together so nicely and it was truly a magical day. We had ~165 guests and the space didn't feel too big or too cramped. It was perfect! For our package, we selected the steak and the salmon entrees and got compliments from guests on both. During our tasting, we requested a slight change to make both of the entrees have mashed potatoes, which they were able to accommodate for our event. We were very pleased with the venue and thank them for everything to make our reception a dream come true! read more

Our waitress was Levi and her service was wonderful! Very attentive and made sure our glasses of water were never empty. We both ordered the teriyaki sirloin and everything came out amazing! We were also greeted by Jonathan, the manager, who would also check in and make sure we were happy with the food and service being provided. This place was magical. My son had his wedding reception here last Saturday, and I was so impressed with everything about this place. Even my chicken dinner, which you don't expect wedding dinners to be great, but it was. It was so soft and tender, the mashed potatoes and gravy were awesome. And I ate every one of the green beans as the vegetable dish. I thought the wait staff was super nice, and most impressive was the patio attached to the dance area. You can periodically walk out and get this great scenic view of the water in the Long Beach skyline It just was a great place to have an event. When you walk in they have this wonderful aesthetically pleasing garden like area, with sweeping walkways to enter the building. Just walking in makes you feel this place is awesome. The bartenders were really good people. I can't say one negative thing about my night. I literally thought this was the best wedding reception I have ever been to, and a lot of that was to do with the quality of the establishment. My only knock, gotta use your GPS to get there cause man is Long Beach a maze of streets that are serpentine. But that's not the Reef's fault. I would call this place magical. On 7-19-26,our group of 26 ladies attended the Sunday Brunch at the Reef and the experience was disappointing. We were told the Brunch included unlimited Mimosas but that was not our experience. The mimosas were poured with only a small amount in each glass. Despite asking to keep the drinks coming we had to wait 15 to 20 minutes for our refills. With such long waits between refills, it felt like the mimosas were being unnecessarily restricted. We even asked if bottles of champagne and carafes of juices could be brought to the table for more efficient service for such a large party. However, we were denied by our waitress who serviced our part of the table. Ironically, after the waitress announced last call for mimosas, she finally brought several carafes of juices and placed them on the table but we no longer needed them. We felt mislead regarding the promotion of unlimited Mimosas due to our experience being contrary. Furthermore, the food was not what we expected. The Smashburger was sent back because the meat tasted spoiled. A waffle was sent back because it was cold, the Oysters Rockerfeller were sent back because they did not taste fresh, two of the Teriyaki steak dishes were cooked well done when they were ordered medium well and one rice boat came cold. Came here for an event. Decent space with a view overlooking the port/harbor area. Catering is ok although I'm not sure if this was an in-house catering team or an external one. Bar service and options could be better.. read more
