Went here for the pre fixed brunch menu and overall had a really great time. The ambiance was nice and comfortable. The menu was 3 courses and 1 shared appetizer. The appetizer was tasty and filling. It was a little bit of prosciutto, two doughnuts and a parfait to share. My next plate was the beef carpaccio. This was my first time having carpaccio and it was sooooo zesty and delicious!! I was a little underwhelmed by the fluffy pancake. The batter was a bit grainy and a little dry. The cherry mascarpone duo was yummy though. My main entree was the rollatini w/ bfast sausage bolognese. This was the star of the show. Amazingggg flavor. I added on a zeppoli w/mascarpone and caramel for dessert which were equally as good. Super cute place and would definitely love to come back for dinner. Pro tip: add an over easy egg to your meal and throw it on top of the bolognese. You won't regret it. ;) read more

I had super high expectations for this spot as everything looked so yummy on yelp. Came here and ordered a variety of things from the prix fixe menu. Id say it started off absolutely amazing with the salad being one of the highlights (which was weird) as well as the appetizers. The potato puff was pretty good but the crudo was very yummy. Sadly, once it got to the entrees it was a bit disappointing. My cacio e pepe was extremely overloaded with cheese and that was all I could taste. It was way too rich and heavily seasoned. The extra truffles i added unfortunately, had no flavor (never had that happen before). It was bland and did not contribute to the flavor of the cacio e pepe. My boyfriends pasta dish which was the only red sauce pasta was way too salty to even eat. The service was amazing however and our server quickly replaced it with another pasta dish which was ok. The cod we ordered was also.. again extremely salty as well as the sauce on the ribeye. Besides the sauce on the ribeye though the sous vide was excellent and it tasted pretty good. The zeppole we ordered for dessert was a let down as well- it was just very doughy. Overall the ambiance was perfect for date night or a special occasion, but the entrees that should be the highlight being a let down was a pretty big part of the reason why it was a 4/ borderline 3 star for me. We just dined here for our 19th anniversary. Let me start by saying that we really enjoyed the overall experience and will return again. We chose Juniper based on outdoor (more) private dining. We were seated at 9:25 for an 8:45 reservation but won't hold that against them. The food was inventive - just the way I like it. I want my mouth to be surprised with something interesting and not the same old thing. The cocktail we chose was called the Figgy Smalls. It was tiny but packed a huge punch. We enjoyed it. We opted for the prix fixe menu and added on. Let me say we made a mistake. There is no need to add on and I don't think an adult human could finish the food provided through the prix fixe menu. We loved the stracciatella appetizer. It was sublime. It comes with the best focaccia bread I have ever had in my life. I think it may be the best bread I've ever had in my life - period. We did not really enjoy the hamachi crudo appetizer. The fish was sliced on the thicker side and wasn't the right size for a bite. It was also a bit fishy. I did enjoy the tomato broth that it came with. For the salad course, we got one of each option. The "little lettuces" salad was amazing. I truly enjoyed the complexity and interesting elements that went into it. Unfortunately the other salad, "Frances and Thatcher baby lettuces" was not edible. It was the saltiest thing I can remember eating and I love my salt. We could not finish it. It was a salty mess. For our 3rd course we not only added another dish a la carte but we also added lobster to it. So...the dish we added was the lobster risotto. It was not good. We didn't enjoy it at all and it was an extra $34. Hard pass. I'm usually not impressed with cacio e pepe but this was the best flavor wise that I've had. My favorite pasta of the night was the Campanelle. When you see the picture, it doesn't look like much, but the flavor was unique and interesting and the pasta was feather light. For the proteins, we had the halibut and the striploin. The steak was ok. Nothing to complain about but just a very average both from flavor and texture. I would not get it again. The halibut was slightly over cooked and lost some of its silkiness but was still tasty. I could have done without this course all together. Nothing super inventive going on. We were so full by dessert that we asked to box up our zeppole. We have not tried it so no comment on it. The blueberry granita wasn't something I thought I was going to like because I don't like fruity desserts. It was fabulous and I really enjoyed it. It had a luxurious Pana cotta that elevated the humble granita to a new level. Definitely get this one! Another little thing that I noticed was the plating on some of the dishes was a little sloppy or not detailed. Other dishes, like the halibut or the stracciatella were beautiful to look at. Had date night here a few months ago, and while the service was great and the food was delicious, it wasn't particularly memorable or unique. For it claiming to be a high end dining place and having a high price point, it really didn't fit the vibe. It was a very casual ambience, most people weren't even dressed up nor were the staff. I wouldn't recommend this place for a special occasion, nor do I think the prices justify the food at all. We had the puffy potatoes, caccio de pepe, little gem salad, and steak, which again, were delicious, particularly the little gem salad and steak, but nothing memorable. Came here for date night and opted for the 9-course tasting menu with the wine pairing. On a high level, each course came out perfectly timed so we weren't waiting long in between. Our server checked on us regularly and ensured we had the correct wine pairing. For $75, the wine was pleasantly abundant; mostly white wines with a sprinkling of red, but each was around a 3 ounce pour. As for the food: -House focaccia: Can't go wrong with whipped ricotta and a little lemon zest. -Hiramasa crudo: The coconut washed pineapple brodo was the star of that dish. I could drink a whole bowl of it. -Stracciatella: Mozzarella had a good, stringy texture and balanced well with the prosciutto, which wasn't overly salty. The bread felt like a crouton. -Soprese: Delicious! I couldn't get enough of the brown butter sauce. Pasta was al dente. The toasted almonds added a nice crunchy texture. -Cavatelli: The slightly citrus sauce complemented the clams, although I definitely could've done without the cannellini beans. My date didn't get any clams in his so, unfortunately, I had to share. -Halibut: I could put that cream sauce on anything. -Duck breast: A little too undercooked for me, which resulted in a chewy duck breast. Really liked the use of their pumpkin and enjoyed the contrasting texture of the shogun maitake. 2 different sauces with one having a milder, more mellow flavor and the other having more of a pungent kick. -Pineapple orange mousse: The right balance of citrus and sweet. -Verde: Apple flavors on apple flavors! Usual Experience: 5/5 This Experience: 3/5 My fiancé and I have been to Juniper multiple times and for multiple special occasions (Valentines Day, anniversaries etc.) The food and service are consistently phenomenal and we truly enjoy the restaurant and the atmosphere. We chose to celebrate our Engagement at Juniper and unfortunately had our least pleasant experience on this evening. I ordered an excellent dish - Crab Bucatini - which was not on the a la carte menu, but on the prix fixe menu, which begins at $95, with a $25 upcharge for the Bucatini. I ordered 'Crab Bucatini', which was delivered to me with 1oz of caviar that I did not request, but assumed was a special treat due to our Engagement. At the end of the evening we find that the caviar was added to our bill, at a whopping $120 charge for my dish alone. When discussing with our waiter Oscar, and requesting that the caviar charge be completely removed we received push back and instead were given 50% off of the dish rather than the true price of the dish. As this was such a special occasion, we decided not to make a scene - but this left us feeling unpleasant as we have been patrons multiple times before and this occasion was extremely special. As previously mentioned the service and food at Juniper is always incredible, it was just disappointing that on such a special occasion we received such a fright on our bill and push back as we requested the change to be made. The puffy potato deserves it's hype, and if you like fish, the hiramasa crudo was also pretty mind blowing. If you have at least two people, I strongly recommend getting both salads. In what world is the salad the best part of meal? I know, but these are truly exceptional. Cacio e pepe was flavorful and satisfying w/o being too heavy. The risotto on the other hand was WAY too heavy, but it was so rich and creamy that I tried my best to eat as much as I could. The steak was good quality, but did not impress. That said everything else was so good; I definitely feel like I got my monies worth. The chocolate cake shouldn't be called that, because the coconut is the star of the show there, and it's a big star. Super fun place with a great vibe. Perfect for a nice brunch or fancy date night. I came with a friend for the prix fixe brunch and it was an interesting experience but a little underwhelming! We started with a pre-selected plate of crullers/donuts, prosciutto, and yogurt for the table along with iced tea (you can also choose coffee). Iced tea was great, food was good, but I did think that the selection of food seemed a little random in their pairings. For my first course I went with the oysters -- simple and delicious. I ordered the potato frico for my second course, but they were out of stock so I went with the Everything Angolini. It was delicious but it did come out cold. I chose the egg benedict for my third and final course but I was disappointed -- the bread was INCREDIBLE, but everything else was drenched in hollandaise and it overpowered the egg and squash. It was a big, gooey mess. It also took a super long time to come out. For the price, it was nothing to ride home about. Went once a year ago and LOVED it. Delicious lobster pasta (I usually think lobster pasta is just a gimmick but this one was truly delicious) and a phenomenal sea bass entree. The old fashion we got though was not that great. Focaccia is good, regular focaccia, but the hot honey is too hot for my liking. Would have given it 5 stars last year with our experience but 4 with my most recent visit. I also acknowledge that their menu is ever changing. I just went for a celebration and did the tasting menu and I was pretty underwhelmed. Truffle risotto was really good ( I dont like truffles though, but when i took them off the actual risotto was really good. My partner loved it with the truffles thought.) Seared scallop was actually also really good! Both entrees I found to be good but not amazing (steak and pork). My partner loved the mushroom that came with the steak. Im not a fan of the honey dessert because its a bit too rich for me but it is some unique flavors and a good combo of textures! My sister has come here many times and loved it, but I suspect we might have caught them on an off night. The flavor of the dishes was pretty good overall, but most of our dishes didn't feel fresh. Not sure if this was due to it being a Tuesday night. Would probably give them one more try though. They have a menu that rotates often. Definitely had to Google a few things. It was hard to know when a listed ingredient was a type of sausage, cheese, or vegetable. If you get the prefix menu it's $75 per person. Each dish is a small portion, but you get a starter, salad, pasta, protein, and dessert. Everyone here was very sweet. We were worried about being cold, so they sat us at a table further inside the restaurant and offered to adjust the temperature for us. Our server described each dish to us as they came out, and never made us feel rushed despite the fact that we were slowly working through our courses/some of the last people before close. Only tried one of the cocktails, but it was good. Decently strong, and well balanced. We both got the prefix menu. This isn't part of the prefix menu, but they started us off with focaccia and whipped ricotta. The ricotta had a drizzle of good olive oil on top. Simple, and delicious. Just the right amount of bread for how much ricotta we had. Our spring salad with Gorgonzola and pine nuts looked so sad and wilted that we barely touched it. The other was good, but simple. It was properly crispy considering we were given a half a baby romaine heart (or so it appeared). The fried puffy potato dish with Dijon was not warm in the slightest. My sister said she's gotten this in the past and loved it, but said when she got it it had been piping hot. Since it's a fairly simple dish, the fact that it wasn't hot made it somewhat boring. The chicken was the star of the show. It's skin was crisp, it was hot (there was actually steam coming off of it thank goodness), and it was tender and juicy. The gnocchi wasn't bad, but wasn't what I'd expect texture-wise. They were so small and curled that I felt like I was eating shell pasta rather than doughy gnocchi. It also felt as if the sauce had been reheated, because it struck me as a bit oily rather than thoroughly creamy. I've never had a proper affogato before, so this was memorable for me. The coffee was hot and fragrant. It was verging a bit on espresso with how strong it smelled/tasted, but paired with the pistachio ice cream I found this enjoyable. Carrot cake was solid. We started with the puffed potato & tartare, both of which were great. The mustard that accompanied the potato was really not needed. We tried both salads and they were both shocking good for salads! The primi course was so difficult to make a decision on. We tried the cacio e pepe & tortellini en brodo & we were obsessed with the cacio, which our waiter told us was the house favorite. We were stuffed by the time we arrived at the main course, but the steak & dish were pretty good. What started off as not so great ended up being incredible. We arrived and waited in the lobby area where the front door was slamming every minute as people walked in and out. It felt like about 80°F inside in the waiting area which was pretty uncomfortable, so things could only really get better -- and they did. Our server was extremely friendly and helpful. We started the meal with a glass of the Chianti and one of the sparkling wines -- note that there are not currently any Champagnes by the glass. The food that followed was extremely rich but oh so delicious. The puffy potatoes were addictive, perhaps my favorite dish was either the Stracciatella or the Little Lettuces. Lovely atmosphere and we sat at the Chef' counter. Ordered the focaccia, which was good. The Puffy Potato were basically mashed potato sticks with a whipped dijon cream dip. The sauce was incredible but the mashed potato sticks were just, well, mashed potatoes. we ordered a wagyu NY strip medium plus and it was quite chewy. We noticed the guy manning the grill cooked in and then put in on a hot plate down beneath the grill and when the rest of our food was ready, he put it back on the grill. Perhaps that is why it was chewy? It didn't have alot of fat in it for a wagyu. The sauce was delicious though. The food came out quickly but the service staff appeared uninterested in diners. I like to go to a restaurant that talks about the various menu items with excitement and explains them well so you get excited too. It wasn't a bad experience but definitely not a repeat. read more

I've heard about Juniper for many years and had never been! My boyfriend and I had an excellent date night trying their seasonal prix fixe menu. I did not see any parking available but we took advantage of the $10 valet. The interior is very dark and open, and there is an outdoor seating area as well. The menu for our evening had a summery feel, almost all dishes included lemon in some way as well as other fruits like strawberry and cherry. Each dish was pretty small, but once we got to the lamb and the fish they were pretty good sizes! Everything we tried had such interesting combinations of flavors. You could tell a lot of thought and care was put into the menu. The service was attentive and knowledgeable. A petite version of the classic wedge salad, but with a bright shallot vinaigrette dressing. 4 stars = roasted diver scallops. The scallops were good but the fresno pepper puree was a little heavy handed for scallops. 4.5 stars = carnaroli risotto w/shiitake mushrooms, roasted garlic and toasted hazelnuts. The risotto was creamy and the dish was flavorful, the toasted hazelnuts sprinkled on top added a nice texture. 5 stars = milk & honey dessert. White chocolate creme, jasmine milk jam and honey gelato? Enough said. | Drink | I'm a lover of Aperol spritz and Gin, so they created a perfect cocktail for me, the Amalfi Coast spritz (with gin, elderflower liquor, prosecco and eucalyptus). This drink is refreshing and herbaceous. | Atmosphere | Interior: I love the clean lines, natural woods and cool wall murals. I'd go back more often if they featured new items more often. The bar is a nice place to eat if you don't have a reservation, and the bartenders are well trained on making excellent craft cocktails. From starters to dessert, I've enjoyed many things on Juniper's menu. Salad dressings are especially memorable, as are the Zamboni doughnut style dessert. Even the coffee/espresso is incredible. The multiple cocktails were all enjoyable, not too hard where I have trouble drinking it, but not too sweet that I get sick of two sips. There are clear stars of the night here: the cacio e pepe and the halibut. Sure, the opening dishes were delicious, but when I tried this cacio e pepe.... It was perfect. It had this robustness in the sauce that I have yet to find anywhere else in Austin. There is a frontal taste of freshly cracked pepper that is noticeable in a good way. Not too much that you think, "oh, this is very peppery!" Just enough where it really enhances the flavor profile of the pasta. It really surprised me that they achieved such a dish all the way in Texas! I had to convince myself I wasn't in Italy. The halibut is a less traditional dish, but it was cooked so gorgeously, soft, buttery, absolutely delicious. At that point in the 5-course meal, I was slowing down, but the portion and lightness of the protein was exactly the amount I had room left for. It didn't make me feel terrible and slow afterwards, just an all-around great dish to include. The service was great and the valet is a good deal... which the latter is pretty much unheard of in America. I finally decided to give this place a try in support of Austin Restaurants Week, though, due to my fiancé wanting the 5-course regular prix fixe meal over the 4-course special, we ended up doing that (everyone at the table has to be on the same prix fixe path). Overall, the service was stellar, but the food did not live up to the price for me. With a bill that came in just around $200 (with the tax, tip, and "wellness fee" that seems to be more common nowadays), I can't see myself justifying the price to return here, given the competitive Austin market of fine dining restaurants with similar taste, creativity, and style. I'd give it more of a 3.5/5, but since Yelp doesn't allow half-star ratings, I'll round up for the incredible service. I would definitely make reservations, as your chances of dining without one seem low. There is $10 valet parking or hourly parking in the common lot just before the restaurant (they don't validate). Food ratings: - House-made focaccia (4/5): Great starter. Bread was fluffy and tasted as expected. - Ribeye tartare (4/5): Pretty impressive. I'd rank it in my top 3 of all time. Only minor nitpick is they give you a size-able amount of tartare but one skinny little piece of bread to eat it with (I ended up using some of the focaccia to finish it). And I never thought I'd say this in my life, but a little too much cheese! Overpowers the beautiful flavors in the tartare. - Puffy potato (3/5): A glorified, overpriced tater tot. Good texture but really nothing special at all. And the Dijon is just that, nothing crazy. - Little gem lettuce (3/5): The crispy shallot and parmesan crisp were the best part. The mint and parsley thrown in there were overpowering of everything else and felt random. Would have been just fine with only the little lettuce. - Summer salad (3/5): Pretty good. Loved the freshness of the fruit and the dressing. - Cacio e Pepe (3.5/5): This is their most popular dish and house specialty, but compared to the one I had at Emmer & Rye I would say this wasn't all that. The cream is a bit heavy, making it feel more like an alfredo sauce than your typical cheese and pepper pasta. But it was a solid portion and, besides the heavy cream, I wouldn't really change it. - Duck tortellini en brodo (5/5): This was probably the best dish. It looks simple but the flavor was rich, and it was a perfect balance of the duck and potato. Delicious. - Poached Atlantic halibut (2/5): This was the downer of the night (and we shared our feedback, which was both asked for and welcomed). A new dish that's still working its kinks out, the fish was incredibly salty. And not because of the capers. The fish itself, by itself, was just like eating a spoon full of salt. It ruined the dish and was disappointing. The potential is there, though. - Grilled prime Texas ribeye steak (4/5): Your standard steak. No complaints. The portion looks small but is relatively fair. The mushrooms were awesome. - Rose panna cotta (3/5): If you don't like floral notes, stay away. It literally tastes the way roses smell. Interesting. I personally felt like it was eating solidified perfume, but it wasn't terrible. - Affogato (2/5): Average. Nothing really extraordinary to say about it. read more

Took my girlfriend here to try their season tasting menu & enjoy a bottle of wine as a part of her Christmas gift and have to say that we both felt a bit underwhelmed at the overall experience. I didn't really think this would bother me at first reading through reviews, but the seating arrangements were quite close and it just felt odd having someone right next to you eyeing you down (for reasons unbeknownst to me) for most of the meal while you try to focus at the dishes and company with you, also having to hear their complaints about the cook of a steak and be rude to their server threw off the vibes a good bit. I've looked at some of the other seasonal tasting menu plates that have been posted here and maybe I just got unlucky, since some looked really great compared to this one.. but overall this menu felt relatively uninspired & lacking dynamic or unique/creative flavors or flavor combinations and the plating (save for the final dish) wasn't quite spectacular either (the prosciutto dish seemed as if it was just all crammed together into a glass bowl and sent out, which surprised me). I could leave a review that goes over every dish, but ultimately I feel that where things fell short of my expectations were in the general lack of "wow factor" in the seasonal plates which were presented, which I typically do experience when dining at other places for special events like these. read more

The food is so amazing. We did the Prix Fixe menu. Everything was divine, perfectly balanced and flavorful, and the roasted cabbage was to die for. Our server had everything perfectly timed. And the wine pairings really elevated all the dishes. The ambience was beautifully dark and moody, the music was present enough to vibe to, but not overpowering. Even though we ate at prime time we could still hear each other. We went for our anniversary and though it was pricey ($300 for two people with only one of us drinking), it was absolutely wonderful for a special occasion. read more

- I came here for the tasting course menu (9 courses $125). I recommend the center cut ribeye, beautiful color, texture, and seasoning. - I don't recommend the Poach Halibut or Hiramasa Crudo. I dont like the fish dishes here becauae of the seasoning, texture, and freshness. The beans are gritty. - With pasta dishes, the seafood is disproportionately smaller than the pastas. I dont mind smaller portion in overall but not such ratio gap between ingredients (pictures below). - Dessert: it's kind of heavy for me. I was hoping something more delicate but the orange pudding inside the tart is refreshing and new. - Great Customer service --- In overall, the tasting course menu is worth to try but I would expect an improvement for the next visit. read more

Husband and I were blown away by the food. Gorgeous presentation and incredible flavors! We had the Prix Fixe menu and ordered differently so that we could double-taste. The truffle addition to the Cacio e Pepe was totally worth the extra charge. Great service from Rachel and the bartender made us excellent martinis. And the fresh focaccia...wow! Unfortunately, there was minimal pause between courses; almost as soon as they whisked our plates away, the next course arrived. It was very efficient but left little time to savor each spectacular dish we had just enjoyed so much. We had an early dinner so probably the kitchen was doing their well-oiled thing with less tables, but it would've felt even more special if it had been a more leisurely experience. It did not detract, but in retrospect I wish we had asked them to slow down. We loved everything else about this night. Repeat-worthy! read more
