Sorry to pile on with another five star review but I can't help it. My daughter and her family took us there for our 60th wedding anniversary celebration. They knew that we would like it because we were big fans of the other Backspace in North Austin. The only thing missing was the arancini that the other Backspace used to produce. Anyway, we started will some very unique appetizers that you won't find elsewhere. One was their rendition of bruschetta and the other, I can't remember the name. Remember, this was our 60th anniversary and I didn't get married at age 7. Did I mention that we ordered a few bottles of wine? Yeah, those were excellent as were the various pizzas that we ordered from their wood fired oven. In case you weren't aware, pizzas baked in a wood or coal fired oven are vastly superior to others and they cook much more quickly. I need to brag about the staff; Firstly, there's a presence of management which I greatly appreciated because I was a restaurant owner for more than thirty years. I don't believe that a restaurant can run itself. Secondly, Our server, Quincy, so delightful that we are starting adoption proceedings. She was engaging, attentive and very animated. She deserves an acadamy award for her performance.. The house gave my wife and I a delightful dessert that we declined to share with our other family members. Popped in on a Friday night around 6 ish, not busy at all and I just missed their happy hour from 5-6. Sat at the bar and it did take a few minutes to be greater after sitting down. Quaint inside, not too big and ample bar seating. Once I was greeted they informed me of their concept once she knew it was my first time in. They are known for pizzas specifically Italian style as all ingredients are imported. Including the pizza oven. How fun! Ordered the mushroom pizza and a glass of wine. Pizza came out in about 10 minutes and it was amazing. Nice and crisp and it did hold up when lifted, the toppings were fresh and not too much. Was in the mood for pizza and this place was recommended from Google. When you walk in it's like you're transported into a little restaurant in Italy. Our waiter Holden was sweet. We got the wings. I was a little disappointed with them. They lacked flavor but the pepperoni pizza definitely made up for it. The crust was so thin, light and airy and you could tell everything was fresh. They are making them fresh and they have just the right amount of char on the crust from the brick oven. You get 6 slices in the pie so it's enough for two people. Consistently delicious pizza in a warm, cozy spot just off the chaos of 6th Street. I could eat the crust all by itself, it's that tasty and chewy with those crispy bubbles only a wood fire can produce. Was looking for a little mid day munch and stopped by this spot near our hotel. We were a bit skeptical at first since no one was inside but they did not disappoint. We got their margarita pizza and shared it amongst 3 people. It was very good and I loved the pizza oven they have because it adds the perfect char to the pizza. The Parmesan on top with their mozzarella was the perfect amount. I personally would get mine with extra sauce next time but def a spot to check out if you're in the mood for pizza! read more

Came for a quick dinner and it did not the disappoint. I got a red sauce pizza that had pork and fennel and it was so flavorful. One of my favorite pizzas for sure. The crust is thin and crispy just how I like it. You can see them make the pizza right in front of you if you sit at the bar. I met my brother for dinner in Austin and we were wandering around near his hotel when we happened upon The Backspace. I'm always down for pizza, and they has this amazing brick oven pizza that was delicious! We also had the burrata (yum) and a glass of wine. The atmosphere is cozy and makes for a perfect date night spot. Every single table was full, including the bar. Service was on point and we had a really nice time there! I'd read good things about The Backspace before we went, but I truly wasn't prepared for exactly how wonderful everything would turn out to be! The service was welcoming and accommodating with truly fantastic food! A hole in the wall an alley behind the 'filthy sixth', this is a cozy pizzaria with a large wine selection. Their oven is imported from Italy, they share their kitchen with The Park place, I learned this much while waiting for a pizza for 40 minutes that takes 1.5 minutes to bake... Most seating is at the bar, the A/C is one of those portable rollaways that kept the dining room at a nice and cool 95F (it was 98F outside). Bathroom ceiling is cute - they decorated it with wine labels. A two person meal (we shared a pizza, had a salad and one wine each) was over $80. read more

A true hidden gem! We walked in without a reservation and were seated within 10 minutes, even with our 6-year-old. It's authentic brick oven pizza!! Mistakenly booked this place for a business dinner but very happy that I did. The oven baked pizza was really, really good. The spaghetti was OK but nothing to write home about. The garlic bread though was pretty awesome and I would highly recommend trying it. Maybe my favorite pizza place in Austin. Came in on a Sunday evening and was in-and-out within 40 minutes with delicious pizza in my belly and leftover olives in tow. There weren't too many people at the time so I was seated right away and watched my pizza come out of the oven about ten minutes after ordering. I had a whole Roasted Mushroom pizza to myself as well as some happy hour olives. The pizza was so good, everything balanced out nicely from the cheese, sauce, crust and toppings. The edges of the crust get a little bit burnt from the oven but it's worth it because the rest of it tasted perfectly baked. I liked that the cheese wasn't too heavy. The olives were a steal for $4. I ate a bunch and still had plenty left to take home. Server was friendly and not pushy even though I was one of the only few people in there. The ambiance is nice and would be a cute date spot. I like that you can see the pizza oven from any part of the restaurant. read more

I didn't have high expectations of this place. First, it's near dirty 6th. Second, it's downtown. Most of the better restaurants in downtown have a primary focus on beef. The really great restaurants in Austin are outside of the downtown area. From the outside, it looks unassuming and, well, a place you may not walk into. Parking is challenging. If your lucky, you may find street parking close by. Once we walked in, I was pleasantly surprised by the vintage charm and cozy atmosphere. There were three large groups (about 25 people) taking up half the dining room. The other half sat at the bar. There was a large group celebrating a birthday. The place filled with laughter, chatter, soft music in the background and smell of pizza baking in the stone oven. We arrived during happy hour so we ordered every appetizer. We loved all the appetizers. They have only beer and wine. We shared the Bianca and Fennel. The crust was crispy but not hard. The pizza was simple and not greasy. Service, food and atmosphere were excellent. I would have given them 5 stars if the manager didn't tel us that we had to leave because they had a 7:45 reservation for the table we were at. Our server did not bring the bill. A better way would have been to ask if there was anything else we wanted and bring the bill. Take the payment, thank us and wish us a good night. We would have taken the lead and left. Make sure you reserve a table ahead of time. Space is limited. Overall, we had a lovely evening and did not regret eating here. read more

This has been my go-to spot for Italian wood-fired pizza since they opened in 2011, always making a priority to visit even after I've moved away. Then I visited Italy and realized why it's the BEST pizza Austin has to offer. It's tucked into Sixth Street like a dirty secret, and the ambiance is reminiscent of a casual Italian cucina, and the food will wow with delicate precision like the latter. Two reasons why Backspace has my heart - the wood-fired crust is airy yet chewy, crusty and toasty, just the right amount of charred - perfect every time. My favorite thing is the house-made mozzarella - it is exquisite, melts like magic under fire, plays so nice with the freshest ingredients (Bianca, add prosciutto that they slice in-house, or Mushroom, add fennel sausage that they make in-house, are my 2 faves)... TO DIE. I've never been a pizza-lover until I had it made right. I almost forgot to mention the wine, and their list is lovely, thoughtful, delicious, no shitty glasses to be had. I stay too long and it's not my fault. Not to be overlooked - the farro salad is fresh, texturally exciting, delightful. This is the first place that introduced me to the "salted" variety of dessert, and their Budino is THE BEST. Perfectly balanced between sweet and a touch savory, it satisfies the need for dessert then lingers... except if you go to the bathroom, then my friends ate the rest without me. read more

Came here with family actually but was struck by how the lighting, the exposed selection of wines and the overall aesthetics of the restaurant created such a romantic aura. Aside from the cozy vibe of the place, the food was delicious and the staff was incredibly kind and attentive. We actually got there close to closing and were worried they wouldn't want to serve us but they were incredibly nice and patient. Cool place, a warm comfortable setting. To eat we had (2) pizza's " pepperoni and sausage and white cheese and arugula. Also (2) salads Caesar and regular. We had red wine and the only beer served. Which was perfect. It was a pale ale. All and all was good. You need reservations. One server and 2 cooks. That's it. You can wait for a table. But it's best to call and reserved.
