Popped in on a Friday night around 6 ish, not busy at all and I just missed their happy hour from 5-6. Sat at the bar and it did take a few minutes to be greater after sitting down. Quaint inside, not too big and ample bar seating. Once I was greeted they informed me of their concept once she knew it was my first time in. They are known for pizzas specifically Italian style as all ingredients are imported. Including the pizza oven. How fun! Ordered the mushroom pizza and a glass of wine. Pizza came out in about 10 minutes and it was amazing. Nice and crisp and it did hold up when lifted, the toppings were fresh and not too much. Came for a quick dinner and it did not the disappoint. I got a red sauce pizza that had pork and fennel and it was so flavorful. One of my favorite pizzas for sure. The crust is thin and crispy just how I like it. You can see them make the pizza right in front of you if you sit at the bar. The service was so friendly and they are quick to get you more water or wine. The quality of the pizza you can really taste how fresh everything is. What a terrific little restaurant located on a side street and as the name implies, it is behind another restaurant in a "backspace". Wow wow wow ....checked into the Westin hotel and was craving pizza! Hoping there was something local that was incredible. Found this place just around the corner! Ya'll this place is legit!!! Their oven is imported from Italy, they share their kitchen with The Park place, I learned this much while waiting for a pizza for 40 minutes that takes 1.5 minutes to bake... Most seating is at the bar, the A/C is one of those portable rollaways that kept the dining room at a nice and cool 95F (it was 98F outside). Bathroom ceiling is cute - they decorated it with wine labels. A two person meal (we shared a pizza, had a salad and one wine each) was over $80. read more

Mistakenly booked this place for a business dinner but very happy that I did. The oven baked pizza was really, really good. The spaghetti was OK but nothing to write home about. The garlic bread though was pretty awesome and I would highly recommend trying it. I didn't have high expectations of this place. First, it's near dirty 6th. Second, it's downtown. Most of the better restaurants in downtown have a primary focus on beef. The really great restaurants in Austin are outside of the downtown area. From the outside, it looks unassuming and, well, a place you may not walk into. Parking is challenging. If your lucky, you may find street parking close by. Once we walked in, I was pleasantly surprised by the vintage charm and cozy atmosphere. There were three large groups (about 25 people) taking up half the dining room. The other half sat at the bar. There was a large group celebrating a birthday. The place filled with laughter, chatter, soft music in the background and smell of pizza baking in the stone oven. We arrived during happy hour so we ordered every appetizer. We loved all the appetizers. They have only beer and wine. We shared the Bianca and Fennel. The crust was crispy but not hard. The pizza was simple and not greasy. Service, food and atmosphere were excellent. I would have given them 5 stars if the manager didn't tel us that we had to leave because they had a 7:45 reservation for the table we were at. Our server did not bring the bill. A better way would have been to ask if there was anything else we wanted and bring the bill. Take the payment, thank us and wish us a good night. We would have taken the lead and left. Make sure you reserve a table ahead of time. Space is limited. Overall, we had a lovely evening and did not regret eating here. read more

Maybe my favorite pizza place in Austin. Came in on a Sunday evening and was in-and-out within 40 minutes with delicious pizza in my belly and leftover olives in tow. There weren't too many people at the time so I was seated right away and watched my pizza come out of the oven about ten minutes after ordering. I had a whole Roasted Mushroom pizza to myself as well as some happy hour olives. The pizza was so good, everything balanced out nicely from the cheese, sauce, crust and toppings. The edges of the crust get a little bit burnt from the oven but it's worth it because the rest of it tasted perfectly baked. I liked that the cheese wasn't too heavy. The olives were a steal for $4. I ate a bunch and still had plenty left to take home. Server was friendly and not pushy even though I was one of the only few people in there. The ambiance is nice and would be a cute date spot. Came here with family actually but was struck by how the lighting, the exposed selection of wines and the overall aesthetics of the restaurant created such a romantic aura. Aside from the cozy vibe of the place, the food was delicious and the staff was incredibly kind and attentive. This has been my go-to spot for Italian wood-fired pizza since they opened in 2011, always making a priority to visit even after I've moved away. Then I visited Italy and realized why it's the BEST pizza Austin has to offer. It's tucked into Sixth Street like a dirty secret, and the ambiance is reminiscent of a casual Italian cucina, and the food will wow with delicate precision like the latter. Two reasons why Backspace has my heart - the wood-fired crust is airy yet chewy, crusty and toasty, just the right amount of charred - perfect every time. My favorite thing is the house-made mozzarella - it is exquisite, melts like magic under fire, plays so nice with the freshest ingredients (Bianca, add prosciutto that they slice in-house, or Mushroom, add fennel sausage that they make in-house, are my 2 faves)... TO DIE. I've never been a pizza-lover until I had it made right. I almost forgot to mention the wine, and their list is lovely, thoughtful, delicious, no shitty glasses to be had. I stay too long and it's not my fault. Not to be overlooked - the farro salad is fresh, texturally exciting, delightful. This is the first place that introduced me to the "salted" variety of dessert, and their Budino is THE BEST. Perfectly balanced between sweet and a touch savory, it satisfies the need for dessert then lingers... except if you go to the bathroom, then my friends ate the rest without me. read more

My team and I had the most enjoyable meal at Backspace. This place is very small, but the food is spectacular. I think we ordered one of everything from the menu and it was all good. Don't know if looking run down on the inside is the atmosphere they're looking for, but the paint was peeling, the bench seats were super dirty (wiped a napkin and it was all black with spots of red tomato sauce), and their kitchen floor was missing tiles looking like a trip hazard and the perfect place to catch ingredients that would never get cleaned up. 5/10 - burrata. Previous pictures showed the burrata sitting on top of a fresh looking salad. We got burrata drenched in chunky pesto sauce that completely overwhelmed the delicate taste of the cheese. Had to scrape the sauce off to enjoy. 5/10 - Caesar salad. It was drenched in dressing. Almost sent it back but we were pressed for time so just ate it, trying to scrape off as much dressing on each leaf as possible. 5/10 - margherita pizza. The dough was good, but there was way too much dough and not enough ingredients. Barely any basil, little dollops of cheese, and just mostly tomato sauce and crust. Another weird thing is when you ask for the check, they come with the handheld credit card device with the total and not showing you the itemized bill. We had ordered some happy hour items and weren't sure if they were correctly billed. A bit sketchy but again, we didn't have time to figure it out and just hope we didn't get ripped off. Came here on a Friday night and good thing that we had a reservation! Because this place is very small, we saw multiple groups without reservations get turned away. The place steadily filled up since we arrived at 6:30 pm and by 7 pm it was buzzing with people. Despite the closeness of the tables, it still felt very intimate. This ambiance was further enhanced by the dim lighting of the room and the simple decor that encouraged patrons to focus on their dinner parties. The two waiters who managed the room were attentive, yet not overly intrusive. They were friendly and shared their favorite food on the menu. We were immediately served water and offered drinks, and the table was already set with cutlery. It was unfortunate that the utensils were wrapped in a paper napkin that although practical gave a bit of a cheap feeling at the start. Luckily, that impression was gone as soon as the food arrived. We shared a burrata for appetizer, which was greatly paired with nutty pesto and olive oil covered toasted bread slices. Then, I had the roasted mushroom pizza, which was excellent and very filling. The ricotta both refreshed the roasted mushroom flavor and added additional texture to the slices. The pizzas were just too big to finish, so I had to take the last slice to go. I had a wonderful experience here recently. I'd recommend reservations, as we saw a few people get turned away. The host was super accommodating for our toddler sitting at the bar with us on a Sat. night. Food was really tasty! We had fennel sausage pizza (slightly salty for my taste), buratta and bread, and salad --all fresh, tasty, and quick! The bartender looked like an older teen Ken doll and was just such a nice kid (rarity among bartenders in this town, sadly). All in all, it's a cute place with tasty, quality food. read more
