Can't say I'm a fan of having to check in with the host stand for a bar seat, but whatever. Got sat on the far end so prime position to watch everything. The tram was pleasant and attentive. Went with the beet salad, then the ricotta and squash pasta and pistachio gelato to finish. Similar to last time portion sizes were perfect that left you satisfied but not stuffed. The flavors went together very well. The couple I sat next to both ordered the sword fish and swore by it being the best thing on the menu. Looks like I'll be back for a round 3. I dined at Il Brutto last night by myself, as I was in Austin on a business trip. My hotel recommended this restaurant, as I wanted Italian and couldn't get into their top 3-5 recommendations. As I sat down, I was immediately greeted and was told about "wine Wednesday" from someone who turned out not to be my server (which was very unfortunate). She told me glasses and bottles of wine were half off, which was cool. I ordered a glass. It turned out my server was Isabel, who was devoid of personality, had a tiny voice that I could barely hear in a loud restaurant (even when I asked her to repeat what she was saying, she wouldn't raise her voice at all) and gave off a very pretentious vibe. I ordered the cheese app and the bread that came with it was hard as a rock. I asked her for some softer bread and (remember, she speaks at about 4 decibels) and she agreed to bring me something. Out comes a full pizza size bread. Hey, it was soft, but way too much. I just wanted some softer bread for my cheese. Anyway, it was fine, but of course she charged me $10 for it. For bread. She asked me if everything was okay and I told her I wasn't happy with the bread and she couldn't have possibly cared less. She said, "oh. Okay". Seriously. Not even a fake apology. Then the bill comes. She charged me full price for the wine. I inquired about it and she said, "oh, that's just for bottles". I told her that's not what I was told and she just kind of tilted her head. Again, ZERO personality. Zero concern. Bottom line... great food! If Isabel is your server, trust me and ask for someone else. She made what could have been a good night much less enjoyable. read more

I came to Il Brutto for my Italian friend's bachelorette, and it was a hit (especially for all of the Italians). Bonus points because they changed our reservation (for a party of 8) from 7 to 7:30 four hours prior to us coming, and even then they were understanding when we were running a little late trying to find parking. I ordered the amatriciana (gnocchi), which was spicy and good. I tried my friend's ricotta & goat cheese ravioli, which was delicious. Honestly, maybe should have gotten that as my main. It was very light and zesty with the orange, and the pistachio balanced out the cheese flavor. My other friend's lamb ragu could have had more salt, but it tasted okay for other friends. We ordered the tiramisu for dessert. It wasn't necessarily authentic, but it had a fun twist to the flavor. They also gave the bride a complimentary gelato, which was super sweet. Heads up, prior reviews noted validated parking, but they don't offer that anymore. We parked on a garage down the street for $12 for 2 hours. Overall, we all loved our first experience at Il Brutto. I did take one star off because I didn't notice the 10% service fee until after we left - pricey menu so after our 25% tip to see the addt'l 10% kinda sucked. Seating option available for both indoor and outdoor. We were first seated indoors but then the live music was too loud so we requested to get seated outside and staff was able to accommodate without any hesitation. I liked sitting in patio as it was good lit up with fresh air and not too noisy so you can hear and talk to other person. I like that they have full vegetarian menu. I got lemonade to start with and roasted beets as appetizer. Quantity was definitely very very small but we got to taste red endives first time in our lives. Also the beet texture was super yum. Overall a good starter but quantity is not in proportion to the price. For the main course we got vegetarian pasta and margarita pizza. Vegetarian pasta had San marzano tomatoes, roasted red peppers, zucchini, parmigiano, tonnarelli. For the dessert, we got ricotta semifreddo and it was amazing. They also provided the mango sorbet along with it as a complimentary item. Dessert was the top most highlight and kiwi was presented in a really unique way. Overall very good experience and would recommend trying this place for specific occasion. Two people cheque can easily go to $100. The ambiance was fun and lively, the service was great, and I enjoyed the non-alcoholic drink I ordered. I got the vegan pizza and added cheese, and the pizza itself was very tasty. My main issue was that I wasn't told adding cheese would cost an extra $10, which caught me off guard when I got the bill. I also expected more veggies on the pizza based on the description. There were only 3 olives and 2 pieces of bell pepper on the whole pizza, and while there was zucchini like advertised, there wasn't any basil. Overall, I still enjoyed the food and vibe, but I do wish they were more upfront about the cheese upcharge which seemed excessive and a little more generous with the toppings. read more

Great happy hour at bar - 4-6 during the week I believe and pastas and pizzas are $15!!! Drinks are also half off!! We tried the cacio peppe pasta, lamb ragú, and the agnolotti and the heirloom tomatoes The tomatoes were delicious - such a great starter! We added some flatbread for it but not super necessary for an extra $10... The lamb ragú and the agnolotti were our favorites - the cacio pepe was still great but did not stand out as much as the others. Majorly disappointed in Il Brutto. I HATE leaving bad reviews and avoid it at all costs but this place really let me down and I wish I would've known before spending $65 and being left hungry. The appetizers we got were $16 for burrata and $22 for tomatoes. Please look at my photos... those are not $16 and $22 worth appetizers. It's time to either lower the price or rework the menu. Neither of those were that good nor enough food to be worth that steep appetizer price. We got a Margherita pizza for dinner too which was fine but genuinely nothing special at all. My friends and I went to Il Brutto while we were on my besties bachelorette trip in Austin. The restaurant was packed when we got there so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation like we did especially if you have a group. They were so great about asking us if we had any dietary needs or allergies and even had separate menus for those which was so helpful since a couple of the girls are vegetarian. Our server was kind and helpful, though did not give us the suggestions that we were quite looking for. We ended up getting two appetizers for the table and an entree for each of us. For appetizers we got the Heirloom Tomatoes and the Roasted Beets. While they both tasted great, the price for both did not seem quite worth it so if I were to go back I'd probably skip the appetizers. For my main entree I got the Pappardelle Lamb Ragu which was absolutely amazing and I would highly recommend it if you are a person who likes lamb. It was decadent and flavorful and absolutely the way to go. Other favorites from the night included the Gnocchi and Agnolotti. It's pricey, but the food quality and presentation are impeccable. The Heirloom Tomato ($20) featured beautifully sliced tomatoes atop a bed of burrata and savory pesto. Heirloom tomatoes, added on the house bread which is their pizza crust: pizza crust was nice - chewy, crunchy, and with the tomatoes and burrata was nice but is probably better in the summer when tomatoes are in season. Lamb ragu: I liked this, my favorite dish I had. On the heartier side. Bottarga and sea urchin pasta: This was boring to me. It tasted salty (in a nice way) but that was it.
