I tried Joi for the first time recently. It's located at The Domain. I made a reservation, but it wasn't necessary since there were plenty of open tables. They have a great patio, and the inside is furnished nicely. Everyone we interacted with was very friendly and made us feel welcome. It's also a very accessible restaurant, which I appreciate. My husband ordered a mule and said it was well balanced and tasty. We started with calamari, but it came out at the same time as our entrees. It tasted fine at first, but the last piece was slimy, which was off putting. I ordered the shrimp lo mein and liked the flavors, but the noodles were very overcooked, and some were even crunchy, very disappointing. My husband had the sliders with fries and enjoyed them. Our waitress was very nice, but she didn't really keep up with refilling our drinks, so that was another small bump. I'm willing to give them a second try, but the Domain has a lot of good restaurants to compete with, so they'll need to smooth out those bumps to really stand out.
It was a lovely outdoor dining experience. They have a nice dining space on the North lawn of the Domain and we were seated promptly. The food came out quite fast and some of the dishes that were most enjoyed were the truffle chicken potsticker, the lobster taco and the Korean Spicy chicken. The lemon tart for dessert was bright and tart in the very best way. It was my favorite bite of the night and I'm not even a dessert person! We only ordered small plates because that was the vibe we were going for during our meal but they also have entrees listed (we will try next time). They have a nice variety of bar drinks and the whole experience felt relaxed, not rushed, and just lovely. The restaurants around the seemed loud and chaotic but Joi was chill and relaxed. I'd come back for the ambience alone. The service was great. We had a few different people come to our table and they were all excellent. This is a great addition to the Domain. It's right next to Paul Martins, in front of the lawn by the red heart and across from the Apple Store.
When I chose this establishment it was from a recommendation. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the food. The Korean fried chicken lacked flavor, the shrimp fried rice was just ok, and the French fries were tasteless and did not belong with my tofu pork buns. However, the fried shrimp were perfect. Service was good and the setting was very pleasant. I was really hoping for better.
Food was good, flavorful and served hot, nothing to rave about but it was not bad. I'd probably rank it a solid 6.5/10. The service was solid as well, not bad but not exceptional. The restaurant is very nice on the inside, lots of seating. Would I go again, yes. Is it at the top of my list for Asian cuisine? No. I've been blessed to have been to some amazing restaurants, this was clearly a good and solid restaurant.
The restaurant was pretty empty when my friends and I got there. I ordered a passionfruit prescription cocktail, which was tasty. For an appetizer I had the hamachi crudo. The fish was fresh. I had the strawberry and tuna roll for my entree. It wasn't very spicy but I enjoyed the spicy salmon and the strawberry with the wasabi aioli. It was my friend's birthday and the waitress offered her a free shot, which was nice. However, the waitress couldn't split our bill so we all had to write down different numbers next to what we ordered so she could separate the checks.
Went here for happy hour bites and also to try some of their main entree items. So on the day I was there, they had the whole main dinner booked out so everyone else had to be seated in the patio area. That was fine, however I wanted to order some dishes off the main menu and I was told that nothing was available. Wow! Not sure if that was because of the event going on in the restaurant. So we pretty much ordered everything off the happy hour menu. The items were decent for the prices, but they did take a while to come out. Also everyone in my party of 4 ordered a shrimp tempura roll but only 2 of them had that extra orange colored sauce as decor and for taste on the plate. Wish things could have been a little better.
It's more like a 2 star but the prices are not too bad and the vibes were on point. So 3 it is. We stopped by this place for drinks and an early dinner on a lovely Sunday afternoon of shopping. The place has a beautiful interior and a wonderful outdoor patio. The drinks are nice but the food was simply not good. I'm sad because the menu has so many delicious sounding items which makes me think this place has so much potential. The chicken truffle dumplings ($12) were probably the driest most bland dumplings I've ever had. They were slathered in a strange sticky sweet sauce. The calamari ($14) was fried nicely but also had no flavor. The Hiramo sushi roll ($21) was also slaughtered in sticky sweet sauces. You could tell that the fish was not very high-quality, the tuna crudo ($19) was chewy and stringy too. My friend also mentioned that the chicken ramen ($18) lacked flavor. The staff are very polite.
Sunny day, beautiful weather, and a great time for some Asian infusion and a cocktail. It all paired out perfectly for a small outing at the Domain. I got the Taiwanese popcorn chicken, which was all very flavourful and tasty. What a great location to have a joyful Sunday afternoon. Next time I'll come for lunch or dinner and try more things of the menu. So far, it got me curious enough to come back.
JOI Asian Bistro was an absolute delight to dine at. At first glance it's a beautiful restaurant with many different seating options catered to how outdoors you would like to be. The checkin process with our reservation was smooth and so was the ordering process. The food was absolutely amazing. We ordered the wagyu beef sliders, braised short ribs, xiao long bao, and pork sabaro ramen. The sliders were great and so were the fries that came alongside it. They could've used less vegetables on it so help focus on the beef flavor but it was still good. The xiao long bao was pretty good as well, not as good as it would be at a dedicated dumpling spot but still above what we expected. The best part of the meal was the braised short rib. It was cooked to perfection and was extremely tender and juicy, just phenomenal. Unfortunately the biggest letdown was the ramen. The toppings were fine but the broth itself had zero flavor, almost like it was regular packaged ramen broth. Outside of the food the staff were great. They got us our orders quick and were incredibly receptive. We ordered a few drinks as well while we were there: the Japanese old fashioned, pineapple inferno, and lychee harmony. All of us liked the flavor of our drinks, although they were stronger than expected. Cumulatively, JOI is a fun and very good restaurant in The Domain. We were pleasantly surprised by the food although if you are searching for Asian food specifically then this would not be your best bet.
Came across this restaurant as I was looking for a spot for an afternoon cocktail and light bites. The place is elegant with a relaxing and chill atmosphere. The host and servers were welcoming and immediately accommodated me. They have a few interesting choices of drinks and cocktails and varieties of sushi, sashimi, bowls and just abt everything. I elected for my lychee martini and a couple of sushi rolls. I also didn't wait to be serve my drink and rolls. My drink was tasty and made right. The sushi rolls tasted fresh and delicious. I enjoyed my time alone and will definitely be returning to this spot again in the future.
Dining at Joi offers a mix experiences for a vegetarian! The restaurant's modern décor and lively atmosphere create a pleasant backdrop for a meal. However, while the ambiance is inviting, the overall dining experience can feel hit-or-miss, especially for those with specific vegetarian preferences. To start, we tried the vegetable tempura which was Ok. Tried 2 of their Vegan and Veggie Sushi which was kind of disappointing for me! For the main courses, I requested them make me a Veggie noodle and add some extra veggies ! I would say I loved the thin noodles ! Decided to skip the desserts ! Overall service was good ! Love the location as you can also opt to sit outside in the patio if the weather is good ! (Definitely not during Texas summers) Overall, this place offers a decent experience but with room for improvement. For vegetarians seeking a standout meal, it may be worth exploring other options in Domain !
New Asian fusion spot in the domain! Joi does a little bit of everything well. We went for a casual dinner at the bar during the UT game last weekend. Highlights were the great cocktails (got a perfectly made espresso martini), and very authentic Asian dishes. We got the XLB soup dumplings which were surprisingly some of the best we have had in Austin. We also got some Nigiri which was reasonably priced and portioned. Ambiance was fine but it just wasn't busy because it's a pretty new spot. Will definitely be my go to when in the domain for a nice date night Asian food read more

I really liked the food and drinks at Joi! It was a modern ambiance and decor. We snagged a Valentines Day reservation and it was solid food. Shishito peppers and fried rice were excellent. The tempura was ok, crispy but the sauce was not very flavorful. read more
I sat down outside at the staff was exceedingly nice. They have a new outdoor patio and the weather was brilliant. I ordered the truffle salmon poke. It tasted great but was expecting a poke bowl. Not bad just a heads up. Overall a positive experience and ill go there again. read more

Came in for the bento box but it's only for lunch! Though I was sad I did enjoy the tofu sushi and the tofu boa. Both were such good choices in my opinion. I liked the food a lot. Loved the DJ right outside. Put me in such a good mood. It's so nice inside and the food came quickly. My server was quick and nice and barely there. Which is all good. I will be back for lunch. Wow. Everything we ordered here was absolutely delicious. The rolls, lobster tacos, dumplings and drinks were all so enjoyable. Compliments to the chef!!!! We started with Xiao Long Bao and the lobster tacos and both were just so satisfying. We followed with hamachi jalapeño roll and viva roll and were pleased with both. We also enjoyed the Sichuan pork wontons with chili aioli- the flavors in this!!!! Drinks: Shishito mango margarita and Master Splinter - both were absolutely delicious! The staff are friendly, the restaurant is nice and clean. I love this place, I've been twice and have not been disappointed. read more
Sushi date part 2. This was not were we originally were headed but it was hot and we didn't want to walk around the Domain looking for the place. So happy we stumbled upon this site. No wait which was nice. The service was impeccable, I loves the purse/coat rack they bring to your table. This was more of an Asian fusion and less sushi which was kind of a bummer but the food was great! A little pricey for what you get but I expect that in the Domain. Not sure with all the options if I would make it a point to come back but overall 5 stars yall read more

To be honest after reading reviews I wasn't too eager to try this place but we were out and about and didn't feel like driving somewhere else to eat! Also domain food usually disappoints...SO I WAS BLOWN AWAY by this place. Service was amazing when I walked in three people at different times came to ask if we've been helped and the host will be right with me. We were quickly greeted by our server (one of the people who checked on us) and she was so bubbly and had recommendation for each area of the menu! We started with their oysters which was a chefs special but I really hope they keep this around because it was one of the best oysters we've had in a while! Poke was amazing (better than casual poke places around town), the wasabi salt was very salty and we actually enjoy that one but it was perfectly crispy, chili dumplings were good and didn't care for the chicken truffle dumplings. Definitely will be back to try other things and hopefully the oysters if they keep that around! read more
Food was okay/good, service was great, restaurant was clean and spacious. The portions are small, anything to share/appetizers would probably only feed two or less. The kaarage chicken needed a little more sweetness, but the breading was light and crisp, the sauce added the extra flavor that the chicken lacked. The best dish was the dumplings, however for a $10+, plate we only received about 3 dumplings, might've been 4? The cucumbers were good, but I think they needed to be pickled. Didn't really have much flavor besides the chili oil on top of it. read more

Very good sushi place in the Domain. First off the service was top notch. Friendly, attentive, and super helpful in making suggestions. The sushi is fresh and some of the roll combos are quite tasty. The Lobster tacos are an interesting appetizer and boy they really pull it off. Nice crunch from the shells and the lobster stuffing is delicious. The Iku Iku roll was good as well. It packs a bit of a punch with the serranos but you can pick those off if the heat is too much. Loved the Joi Signature roll. It packs the flavor in nice bite size portions. Our favorite. Give this place a shot. You won't be disappointed. read more

We came in the other day and were greeted at the door with a smiling face and the music was upbeat and set the tone right away. Our server Chris did an excellent job of picking a wine for my wife and was very knowledgeable about what kind of sushi would be a good "beginner's sushi experience" (toro + smoked salmon + snow crab). It was her first attempt at sushi and it couldn't have gone any better. I got their special, the Lobster Roll. Wow! The only thing that could have been better was the men's bathroom had a pungent odor as soon as I walked in, which seemed like a disconnect and more appropriate for a truck stop urinal than an upscale sushi restaurant restroom. Food and bad odor don't mix if you know what I mean. I didn't lower my overall rating because the service and food were so good and the dining room smelled good. Went on a quiet Monday night for a friend's birthday. Other than us there was probably only a couple other tables occupied for the entire duration we were there. Food: 3/5 - The food itself was really good, but the portion sizes were just so tiny for the amount I paid for. Even as expensive as Austin and the restaurants in the Domain can get, the Screaming Tuna seemed way overpriced. It was 19 for an appetizer amount of food. I also ordered the Master Splinter cocktail. It had a nice smokey taste to it with a touch of fruitiness. Could barely tell there was alcohol in it, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what you're looking for. Service: 3/5 - We were asked several times in the span of 10 minutes if we were ready to order by multiple waitresses, even though we notified each of them each time we were waiting for the last member of our party to arrive. Seems like there was some miscommunication there. We were also asked to present our IDs twice, once to the waiter who accepted them, and again shortly after to the manager who asked to see our IDs again, even though we were all of legal drinking age. He also took a long time to inspect them. I understand the concern from their side as a business, but also as a customer all of those things together made the start of our dinner very unpleasant. So if you tend to look younger for your age, may be a hurdle you have to get through when getting drinks at this place. Ambiance: 5/5 - The location was beautiful and it was a very peaceful atmosphere. Again, we went on a Monday night around 7:30pm. The restaurant was practically empty. read more

9/10 - Gyu Don (ribeye, onions, menma, leeks, sunny side egg, buribop sauce) with the Faye Valentine (watermelon cocktail) - Joi Signature Roll - Chicken & Truffle Dumplings This restaurant is located in The Domain in Austin, TX, and it checks most of the boxes for me. The food was amazing. The staff were helpful, despite us showing up right before closing, and the ambiance was fresh. Luckily for us, there was a spot at the bar on a busy Saturday night. Sitting at the bar is always a fun place and the bar at Joi didn't disappoint. There's always good people watching and seeing fun drinks being made is a plus. The service was top notch. We had a great bartender who was polite and attentive. Food was delivered promptly and didn't come out too fast; meaning-items didn't come out on top of each other. We had dumplings, The Texas roll, and some sushi/sashimi. I had a lovely glass of wine and my friend had a great glass of whiskey (Still Austin). We had a joyful time at Joi. (I had to do it!) :) hopefully we will be back soon! read more

Cedric was very tentative the food was immaculate, and the drinks were delicious. The staff was absolutely amazing to all of our needs and wants! All of the items came out, fresh and fast. Went for my friends birthday, they were able to accommodate a party of 14 people. The food was very good!! We ordered: The rock shrimp tempura, wonton soup, chicken and truffle dumplings, salmon nigiri, blue fish tuna nigiri, the rainbow roll, and smokin' Texas roll. Overall very good, I enjoyed the sushi a lot but I wish the wonton came with more than just 3 of them. Our servers were amazing, we had Alex and Kirsten (I think that was her name). They made our friends birthday very special with sparklers and a glass of champagne for everyone! read more
Wowzers!! What a great find! There wasn't a thing we didn't love. The service was perfect. I don't know the edamame magic...it was just regular edamame...but the best I've ever had! Crazy. The salmon nigiri was melt-in-your-mouth buttery. We had to order more. I'm still dreaming of it. The rainbow roll was so fresh and delicious. The chicken and truffle dumplings added something with a little crunch to our choices. And the cocktails were really good. The regular margarita was top notch. But the real surprise was "One Night in Bangkok"....it is really really tasty. We loved the ambiance and the proximity to other fun places in the Domain to check out afterwards. This restaurant is in such an awesome location and has great indoor and outdoor seating. We had terrible service and the table next to us did too. They even called the manager over because they waited over an hour for food. We waited at our table for about 20 minutes before someone even came over with water. The food was just okay. It's very expensive so the portions are small. If the food was cheaper, I would rated this place a little higher. It's good food but not for the price. Ambiance - This restaurant gave a very chill, relaxing vibe. The music was great and the seating was just enough. Small and intimate. Service - The service started out great but kind of went downhill from there. We felt very overlooked by our server as well as the FOH manager. We watched the FOH manager check on every table but ours. We did not get offered a purse stand, and it felt as if our table was merely an after thought in comparison to the tables around us. Food - The food was pretty good all except the Ramen. The broth was very under seasoned and if you know anything about Ramen you know the broth is the most important to a good ramen. Considering we ordered two Ramen dishes if the waitress and FOH manager would have been paying attention they would have noticed that we did not eat the Ramen at all but no one asked if we enjoyed it or if we didn't. The waitress saw us sitting and not touching our food and simply asked if we wanted to take it with us we quickly responded with "no" and even still she did not ask if we enjoyed it. This is a fairly new restaurant so they do have time to grow in the areas that they lack but I personally wish them all the best and would not dine here again. From an atmosphere standpoint A+ From a sashimi quality perspective D+ Someone else mentioned it in their review.... The raw shrimp tasted downright bad. Inedible, slime, and metallic tastes come to mind. The sashimi platter had no distinctive flavors from each fish. The fresh wasabi wasn't spicy, not even sure how that happens... the edamame was good, dumplings were fine. I know I'll return based on its excellent location in the Domain. I'll just stick to some of their more basic and cooked dishes, or a snack is all. The servers all kept bringing us incorrect dishes. No one really knew what or when to do something. I'm sure it was just opening pains. DJ was playing... think of a TAO kinda vibe. Just a pass on the sashimi is all. read more
I definitely would come here again! We came here for a team Christmas lunch and the bento boxes and sushi we ordered was so wonderful. I also ordered an expresso martini and it was absolutely delicious. The GM even provided us wifi some complimentary desserts which was divine! I will be back to try later items! Been here a few times before for happy hours but this last time was different. I'm not sure if it's under new management but the food was not as good this time around. I saw a lot of servers just hanging out on their phone. The vibes seem dead to me this time around. read more

We stopped by here after dinner for some cocktails. There was no wait to sit at the bar. We ordered a lychee martini but asked for it to be lightly sweetened; it was good (8/10). We also ordered an old fashioned (8/10). Service was good. We will return again and maybe try the food next time. read more

Had a great time at Joi in the domain! We sat outside on the patio since it was so nice out. Patio area is extremely nice as it is lit up for evenings anhas a nice view to people watch from a few various angles! Loved that they also had an indoor / outdoor patio where you could still feel the AC! Service during our time was amazing & accommodating! We were constantly checked on & had everything that we need. Food / drinks: I thought the food was enjoyable for light bites and snacks. I highly recommend the spicy edamame! I'm not sure what type of chili oil / sauce they put on it, but the kick is delightful! The beef potstickers were good but lacked something in my personal opinion so I dipped it in the edamame sauce which blew my mind & raised the bar for them for me. Brussel sprouts were like anything I had had before but were also yummy. Slightly sweet with the sauce that comes with but good nonetheless! My man had the veggie ramen & he loved it! Said the mesh of aromas they put in it made it so filling, he didn't even miss the meat! For drinks we had the hot girl summer which I would get again as it was refreshing & not overly sweet! My man had a kirchin beer & loved it! This is a nice spot to relax & take in the sites so we will be back!! read more
I'm honestly super impressed. Their food is really good, the restaurant is beautiful, and service was great. I came with a group of 11, and I had to call ahead to reserve such a large party. Last minute, I called in to change our reservation, and they were really accommodating and were able to make the change immediately. I tried the Hands off the Peaches cocktail, uni nigiri, gyu don, panna cotta, and Northside roll. The cocktail was a bit too strong and didn't taste as much like peaches, but it wasn't terrible. I loved the uni nigiri, but it was pretty expensive for 2 pieces ($30). The gyu don was delicious, and I would come back to order this. The steak is slightly fatty and lean, and the rice is so flavorful and rich. The Northside roll was good too, but it was a pretty generic roll. My friend and I shared the salmon appetizer, and it was clean and refreshing. I tried my friend's pork ramen, and I would arguably say it's better than some actual ramen restaurants. read more

Can someone clarify the vegan menu items? tempura sushi is labeled vegan, or spicy mayo is on the vegan menu.
Virtually NO vegan items. This isn't a vegetarian-friendly restaurant in general. Good sushi though.
