I am so excited to find a new sushi happy hour spot. Parking in the garage is validated when you get to the restaurant. There were a lot of options on the happy hour menu so we just tried a bunch of things. I loved the presentation of each dish. There was great care taken and you can tell! This was a great dining experience with excellent service! I'll definitely return!

Soto Austin has one of the best happy hour deals in town - great value considering how exceptional the quality is. The fish is always incredibly fresh, and the chefs have a real talent for pairing unique flavors that enhance, rather than overpower, the delicacy of the seafood. Honestly, I'd take Soto over the Uchi chain any day. The balance, creativity, and precision here are unmatched. Their truffle risotto and uni pasta are must-orders - rich, elegant, and deeply satisfying. For anyone who appreciates refined Japanese cuisine without the pretension, Soto truly stands out.

Soto on South Lamar is easily a 5 star experience every time, one of those spots that just nails both the food and the vibe. The sushi is incredibly fresh, beautifully presented, and the flavor combinations are next level, you can tell a lot of care goes into every dish. The space feels upscale but still comfortable, perfect for a date night, or a nice dinner out without feeling stuffy. And yes, the famous flaming salmon dish is fun and delicious, but definitely get more than just that, the rest of the menu deserves attention too, especially the specialty rolls, nigiri, and seasonal fish selections. There is a lot of depth here beyond the showstopper plate. Andy is great, attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely makes you feel taken care of without hovering. Service like that really elevates the whole night. Between the quality of the fish, creative menu, and standout service, Soto continues to be one of my favorite sushi spots in Austin.

We made a reservation to celebrate while we were in town. The location was easy to find, and parking was not an issue. We had a great sever and she was attentive and kind all night. Everything we ordered was really good. Not one thing was bad. It is expensive. Expect to pay $150 plus for two if you're eating and drinking. If we didn't get drinks we probably could have spent $100 plus tip. The quality of everything was impressive and the environment was relaxing and quiet. Perfect date night. Can't wait to come back!

Personal favorites: Giant clam nigiri, ebi nigiri, Uni sushi (forgot the official name for this one) - The giant clam is refreshing and sweet. Not fishy or slimy at all. It's a thick piece so you can really feel the chewy and crunchy texture! - Uni is on the small side. They taste creamy and sweet, exactly what I expected. - The ebi one has some nice citrusy flavor to it, again very nice texture and flavor. Overall the food has very exquisite taste, fresh ingredients, and beautiful plating! We enjoyed everything we ordered. If I had to share one feedback, it's the uni pasta - I think they use something like instant noodle, not the Italian pasta kind. Still delicious though. I'd like to mention the creative seasoning pairing choices. I've been to Japan many times, but Soto surprised me with some unexpected combination of fried garlic, yuzu, truffle, etc. It's very delightful and unique. Will definitely come back.

I have been to hundreds of sushi /japanese places in my life from Portland to Hawaii to Japan and hands down this is one if not the best sushi experiences we have been to while visiting Austin . Our server Rolo was amazing. He was very attentive and took his time serving us. The sushi was flown in from Japan and it was the best. Will go back and visit this place

We were visiting from out of state and wanted to try something local in Texas. The restaurant is beautifully decorated -- classy, warm, and elegant. Perfect date night vibe. The service was amazing too; our server was super knowledgeable and made the whole experience enjoyable from start to finish. We started with the miso soup, which was delicious and had a unique touch with mushrooms added in. For rolls, we got the Soto 2.0, and we loved it. The toro was rich, savory, and just melted in your mouth. Under the cold section, the hamachi chili was one of our favorites -- the bite was perfectly balanced with fried jalapeño and scallions on top. The massugo maguro was another pleasant surprise, especially with the crispy rice underneath adding the perfect crunch. For nigiri, we had the seared sake toro, which was good but not as standout as the others. The hamachi toro (fatty wild yellowtail), though, was beautifully presented with smoke -- it had a rich, smoky flavor that paired perfectly with the fish. We also tried the housemade potato chips, which were a fun and crunchy snack. From the seasonal menu, the bafun uni was fantastic -- buttery, custard-like, and honestly comparable (if not better) than the Santa Barbara uni we've had before. The kama toro with caviar was incredibly rich and delicious. And the highlight of the night was the truffle masuter -- our server recommended it, saying the chef won an award for it, and we could absolutely see why. It was one of those "Ratatouille" moments where the flavors just come together perfectly -- an unforgettable bite. We ended with the uni pasta, which lived up to the hype. The creamy sauce and the egg on top tied everything together beautifully. All in all, Soto was a hidden gem for us and made our first visit to Austin even better. We'd definitely come back next time we're in town!

It's becoming an annual tradition for me to celebrate my birthday here. We always opt for their omakase course, which comes with 18 bites. They also have a premium option that comes with 20 bites and includes more selections from their specialty menu but we're pretty content with just their standard omakase. You're also able to tell your server your preferences which is a huge plus for me because I'm not a fan of shellfish so they were able to customized their omakase selection a bit to exclude things we don't want. It's hard to pick a favorite dish because everything was plated delicately and also tasted superb - definitely very close to the quality you'll get in Japan. One of most memorable dishes for me was the wagyu on the hot stone. It definitely reminded me of Japan. Their homemade potato chip, which left me craving more, also deserves an honorable mention. They have a fantastic drinks selection as well. All in all, Soto is a great place for a celebratory meal. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

I had the pleasure of dining at Soto for Valentine's and their omakase did not disappoint!! Our server was incredibly friendly and did a great job at explaining each item and drinks to pair with them! It's such a fun dining experience, and it's so classy- you'd almost forget it's across the street from Gibson! Definitely recommend and will absolutely be coming back

I popped in to grab HH before my movie at Alamo. The HH menu is great! My bartender was Son. He was helpful and friendly. He told me his favorites. I got the Chili Hamachi, Mini Sushi Tacos, Hamachi Nigiri, and Masu Nigiri. There were all fantastic. I was even surprised with a little extra sushi from the chef. Lucky me! Sorry Alamo, this food is way better than yours! ;) Happy Hour: M-F : 4-6 S-S : 3-6 In the words of A.S., "I'll be back."

Popped in for happy hour on a Monday! Plenty of seating inside and outside. Outside is a bit noisy as you are on S Lamar but a nice option for HH. The HH menu running from 4-6 pm offers a great selection of food and drink options at very competitive prices. We had a few bites, all of which are delicious. There is a $65 HH tasting menu that I plan to come back and try. The service was fast, friendly and knowledgeable. Tons of parking in the Lamar Union garages.

First time here and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We opted to sit outside since the weather was beautiful and we loved every minute. Our waitress was sooo sweet and made my daughter feel so special. We tried so many different things from their happy hour menu along with some from their regular menu. The sushi was phenomenal and I'll def keep them in mind for another Sunday fun day adventure.

Great service and quick too. Modern place located by other small restaurants too. Plenty of garage parking. Menu was thorough. Sushi was tremendous and best one was hamachi apple. White tiger was good but the arugula was best part of the Apple one. Appetizers the crab cake was delicious with the sweet sauce, the pork pot stickers had a spicier sauce which was worth keeping for the sushi. Dessert the matcha was surprisingly great. We had a great server as she tossed in a free dessert mango one at the end. She was quick and gave great recommendation. Will be back

Soto South Lamar Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Soto South Lamar

What are their happy hour specials/discounts?

9$ lychee martinis and margaritas and a few other drinks And basically a bunch of rolls/…

Do you offer a soy paper option?

yes we do offer soy paper

Is this place kid-friendly at dinner time?

On my 2nd visit, there were families at dinner. There were no issues. Enjoy!

    Gluten free options?

Plenty! They are super accommodating for allergies, especially gluten. They can do just about any menu item gluten free, even tempura!

How long will the dining experience take if you do the omakase?

Omakase tends to take about 1.5-2 hours depending on how busy the restaurant is

What's the dress and ambiance like? Trying to do a slightly fancy/dressier dinner.

For Dinner I would definitely say it's a nicer restaurant. It's in line with a nice steak restaurant or Uchi. No coat/tie needed but you definitely would not look out of place with coat tie either. It would be a really nice date night place.

Not sure if anyone reads this, but I'll comment anyways…read more I went here with my husband and overall enjoyed it. I've been here 3 times now. I enjoyed it enough to come back a few times and will come back again. In the spirit of constructive criticism, here is what I have to say, just a few things to note though: The bar is not a real bar. It's just another table, but looks like a bar. The bar doesn't actually function like you'd expect a bar to function. Not a dealbreaker, but a bit misleading. You still get a server, can't seat yourself at the bar, etc. Might as well just sit at a table then. If someone reads this, I'd highly suggest at least considering making the bar function like a real bar! The tables are very close together. I know the place is small so this isn't something you can really change without losing money by reducing the amount of tables, but boy they are packed close. This is more something that maybe customers would like to know though. Management is all white, but the sushi chefs are Japanese. The servers are mostly white too. Not that this is a problem, but it does strike me as a little bit surprising and ever so slightly off-putting. At least, it makes me question what's going on initially. I know supposedly the owners are Japanese, per their website, but it might be nice to see more Japanese people in charge, at a Japanese place. The bussers look to be the hardest working kids out there. I hope they get paid fairly. Every time I've been there, they're the ones rushing around as fast as they can, cleaning up tables all over the place. I'm surprised they only have a couple of them, when they have way more servers. Not sure if this is normal, but they seem to be working really hard. There is no "Happy Hour", Google lied. Google has on their page that they have a happy hour when you look up this place. Turns out they don't. The servers are a little bit loud and rowdy sometimes. I know they all look to be in their mid to early 20's, but it might get to be a bit much. When they go back into their little corner or "hideout" they seem to be screaming and talking really loudly sometimes. Also, they like to scream "CORNER" constantly. I get that this might be a thing they do, to avoid crashing into each other, but there's no need to scream it across the entire building. Especially when it is quiet already. Speaking of screaming, when you walk in, they scream (I looked up what it is so forgive me if this is a typo): IRASHAIMASE (which apparently is "welcome in" in Japanese. The thing is, instead of making it a classy, cute thing they do, they scream it as obnoxiously as they can, like junior high kiddos would scream "67" these days. It went from cute, to annoying after about the 3rd time I heard them do it, while I was eating. If they all said it in a pleasant classy way, I would really like it, although it's become really quite obnoxious. It even looks like some of the employees are over it. I can't imagine how many times they do that daily. Lastly, the music does not match the atmosphere at all. One time I went in, they had rock music on, the next, they had country. The last time I went, they had 80's. They should either have classical or wordless music such as jazz, or some kind of Japanese music. Not sure why they have such out-of-place music. My most previous server was a doll! I also hope the servers get paid. Some of them weren't as friendly, but I won't rag on individual people, as they may have been just having a bad day. The most previous one had pink hair though and was super cute and friendly. As for another good thing, the ambiance and food are definitely above average and the prices don't break the bank. Overall, quite enjoyable place. None of the things I mentioned should make you avoid this place by any means. This is mostly for the staff and management to fix a few things, if they care. That is it! Hopefully someone at least reads this. Not sure if managers actually read these reviews though. If not, oh well. Hope this helps someone one day!

Because the restaurant had such strong reviews, I decided to give it another try and focused instead on the barbecue items, skewers, and dipping ramen from the main menu. Everything I ordered the second time was excellent. The skewers were savory and flavorful, the barbecue meats were tender, and the dipping ramen came with wonderfully bouncy, chewy noodles that paired perfectly with the rich broth. When I finally did, I discovered one of the best Japanese restaurants in Austin. Okay ... if you are going to pay $600 for an omikase then the omikase place is better. The tasting menu at Uchi is better. But if you just want Japanese without paying a gold brick and taking out a second mortgage on your house, Miyo Yakitori and Sushi is pretty damm fine. * * * a) Japanese curry is a utility dish in most Japanese restaurants ... and when you get down to it, in most Japanese homes. It is often what you serve on "cheap" night. Airport hotels offer it as the "free dinner" for tired travellers. The curry sauce itself here is standard issue. But they serve it with a Pork Katsu the size of Williamson county. And it is a very good Pork Katsu. That Katsu was good from Liberty Hill to Thrall and from Hester's Crossing to Jarrell. b) My carnivorous partner's Fireball Udon with Shellfish blew him away. Temperature wise and aesthetic pleasure wise. He raved about how good his udon was all the way home. c) Service was instantaneous. I think there was some sort of event horizon distortion of the space time continuum that allowed them to prepare the food and then go back in time and deliver it within a minute of it being ordered. Both of us were impressed. d) The service staff was as nice as any human beings could possibly be. * * * Great food. Great service. The folks who live in the apartment complex that Miyo is in are very lucky people indeed. Either the apartments are lovely and they get Miyo on top of that. Or the apartments are terrible, but they can still spend all their time in Miyo to compensate. Seems like a fair trade. **************** If you read the other reviews, There seems to be some controversy about this establishment. Miyo has fans and Miyo has haters. * * * Here is my read on the conflicting opinions: a) Earlier in the restaurant's history - Say about 2016, 17, or 18, The restaurant was not very good at all. I think at that time it had another name. b) There was a name change and quality went up. Sometimes when this happens there is an ownership change (or there is an owner who swaps out the management and cooking team to put in new blood.) However, things got fixed, they got fixed. c) Miyo's yakitori is apparently still not where it needs to be. I am not a huge Yakitori fan. If your broiled meat on a stick is not $80 an ounce Wagyu, Or amazing organ meats grilled in the Caucasus Barded with lamb fat and with farm fresh vegetables On another skewer for serious taste contrast ... If you are not at that high level, I don't want to pay for meat on a skewer. There are people who DO like Yakitori. They do NOT like the Miyo versions of that. * * * Yakitori is less than 20% of Miyo's menu. The rest is sushi or wonderful cooked dishes. Lay off the skewer food and you can do well here.

Food: My partner and I shared some Brussels Sprouts, a Robot Ramen, and a Pork Chashu Fried Rice…read more The Brussels Sprouts were fine--the marinade was nice, but would have preferred the sprouts to be a bit crispier. The Robot Ramen was light, yet rich, the meat was succulent (and not too thin, at the risk of being dry) and the noodles were al dente--both were cooked nicely. Lastly, the Pork Chashu Fried Rice was a burst of umami flavor, from the shoyu glazed pork rib to the shiitake mushroom lying underneath. Solid dish--no notes! Service: No complaints! We had a reservation and were seated immediately upon walking in. Our waiter was attentive. Ambiance: Casual, modern. A vibrant experience, to say the least, from the flora draping from the ceiling, to the warm colors permeating throughout. Parking: Street parking available. Pay note of parking signs!

Joshua was one of the best servers I've ever had! He made the whole dinner so fun and enjoyable…read more Came for happy hour but ordered some main menu items too. Really enjoyed the Pom mule drink on happy hour. The cucumber refresher was a little too sweet for me. The spinach dumplings and barbacoa dumplings were both great! Loved the sauces that came with both. Chicken karaage was what you'd expect, would probably try something else next time just to try something new. The hira hira roll was really good! The way they presented the sauces made it slightly hard to dip your roll in it, but would still order again. My friends loved the transformer roll. Yuka-tekkan was a let down for me, just not very flavorful. Overall, would definitely come back for some rolls and the happy hour! There is better sushi on s congress but I still think this is a solid choice. Inside has really cool decor and would be a good place to bring someone to impress a date.
