Very pleasantly surprised to find an outpost of Roku in Austin. Stopped in for a quick lunch and went with the cucumber sunomono and the sushi lunch. The cukes were spicy and perfectly flavored. The sushi was 5 pieces of nigiri; tuna, hamachi, salmon, shrimp and snapper. All came uniquely dressed with their own topping and were extremely fresh. This chain is primarily in California with a location in Vegas and of course this one in downtown Austin. I had never been before and a friend invited me to join them for dinner during the restaurant's anniversary celebration. And what a celebration it was! Every single item on the menu was 50% off! My friend got the Chef Plate (Marketprice sushi) for only $32.50. Incredible! I decided to go with sides and apps. I had the Wagyu beef skewer, shishito peppers, Wagyu beef Goyza, chicken fried rice, and a mocktail. My friend also had the Goyza. Everything was beyond delicious. It goes without saying how amazing Wagyu beef is. Tender, juicy and well-marinated skewer. I love that the shishito peppers already had the stems removed. Makes for much easier eating. They were fresh and crisp with just the right kick at the end. They come tossed in an oyster sauce which I opted to have served on the side. The Goyza was impeccable. The chicken fried rice was primo. Everything was really high-quality not just in presentation but most importantly in flavor & taste. The mocktail I had was the Zen Garden (cucumber, mint, pineapple, and sparkling cucumber) was so refreshing and paired nicely with my food selection. The ambiance is moody and elevated with a calming and relaxing vibe. Who says high-end can't be relaxing? Excellent service from the host stand to our server and the manager who came round after our meal to ensure we were satisfied. All of this excellent service in the midst of an extremely busy night (again, 50% off). I am looking forward to my next visit. Delicious food. The Ichi Go cocktail was one of the best drinks I've ever had. Complex flavors, I perfectly sweetened for me. Who would've thought Tequila, matcha, and pandan (3 things I like) could go together swimmingly. The Tuna Jalapeño roll was also so yummy. The only thing I would say to maybe skip is just get the tuna sashimi $20 instead of the toro sashimi for the $48 MP. The pieces of the toro were so thick and cold that it almost didn't have the buttery delicacy experience I previously have had ordering toro. We went on a day when they had their anniversary celebration so everything was 50% off and the bill was still steep so I'd only go back for special occasions probably due to cost. Made us sit outside for happy hour which is fine, but they barely came outside. We basically waited an hour for our rolls and comped some of them which was good. My friend had to go in and check on our rolls. Said they put it in but never checked up on us?? The hand rolls were not fresh and the salmon was not good quality. I had lunch at Sushi Roku Austin for the first time on Friday after walking for miles during SXSW - I was impressed. We were able to order all the premium items on the menu because they were all 50% off. All the kiddos were absolutely amazing. The flu kumquat was topped with candied citrus, and it was literally the best. The tuna Crudo was absolutely incredible. The Hamachi Serrano was exploding with flavor, but the best bite of the entire meal was definitely the Toro carpaccio. It was the fattest part of bluefin tuna topped with silky velvet caviar. Every single person on the table was raving over how freaking amazing that bite was. Out of the roles, nearly everything was absolutely amazing and the Nigiri's were so good. The fluke, the yellow tail, the bluefin, the salmon. All of them were absolutely phenomenal.. Out of the roles, the best one definitely was the Toro jalapeño. It was the same premium bluefin Toro in a classic roll. The sensi roll was also really good. I would say they missed quite a few items that we ordered and we were also overcharged for a bunch of items we never received or ordered and unfortunately we never realized that until the next day when I looked at the bill. Not sure what the course of action here is, but I feel like it's not worth my time to call the restaurant and try to rectify it. I've been to Sushi Roku a couple of times, and I'll be honest, it's not my favorite sushi restaurant in town. BUT there are two things that bring me back here. First they have a great happy hour, and when the weather is nice you can sit on the patio. Second, they're on inKind, and you can buy discount gift cards at Costco to save a lot. My friends and I have done happy hour a couple of times, like I said, and everything is pretty good and affordable. Check my pics for an idea of what you can get. What we do talk about all the time is that they had their one year anniversary and had the entire menu half off. The place was PACKED! We had loaded up on inKind gift cards and a bunch of us had promo codes, too. Long story short, we had an $800 dinner for the 4 of us that we probably paid like $50 each out of pocket before tip. My friend that raves about it took me and we tried the brussel sprout chips, spicy tuna on crispy rice, hamachi crudo, and a sushi roll. They have great wine on happy hour too! I visited Sushi Roku with my wife a few weeks ago. Even though I'm not a big sushi fan myself, I was happy to find they had some other options on the menu. My wife absolutely loved the sushi and said the fish was incredibly fresh, especially considering the place wasn't too busy. I had the unagi and toro nigiri, it was fresh. The toro was rich and savory. The katana roll was very tasty. We also had the white lotus roll, which was my favorite. I enjoyed the avocado and crispy onions. For our main course we had the Chilean sea bass. It was so tender and flaky. It paired well with the miso glaze. For dessert we had the cheesecake, which was covered in cotton candy then set ablaze at the table. The food was delicious but the service was a bit slow, which is probably normal for Valentine's Day. Food comes fairly quickly once ordered. You won't find special or eclectic pieces just your standard fare done well. The truffle oil gave them a subtle earthy taste. My second choice, Lamb Chop with soy and garlic sauce was under the "Katana Robata Skewers" heading. I didn't know what Katana Robata was, but that wasn't important. Seeing Lamb chop on a Japanese restaurant menu was unusual, and I was in the mood for something heavier than fish, without rice. Yes, I reviewed them a little over a month ago, but I just want to give a shout out to how well the team executed their first NYE night since their summer opening in Austin. First, I was wary of the $150/person pre-set menu. But it had all of their popular items, plus, it was SO MUCH FOOD. Sadly, we left many delectable bites behind because we were simply too full. I'd gladly do this NYE dinner again.
