I loved the shaved cheese, so fluffy with the greens and the crunch from the hazelnut bits. The nasu katsu bao was delicious and gone in a second. Great soft bun with yummy filling. The origiri was yummy too. Very different from what I'm used to with origiri but in a fun and delectable way. Loved the crunchy fried outside and the texture of the rice inside. Went to Uchiba for dinner today and it was quite yummy and a good ambiance on the patio (which is dog friendly!) It's upscale sushi and izakaya. Our favorites were the Hama chili (yellowtail dish), the otoro (fatty tuna) and the hot rock Wagyu beef. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable of the menu and what pairs well together, very friendly to our dog, and overall just a delight. They even offered a few dishes complimentary. Uchiba happy hour is the way to go! We just ordered a bunch of stuff to split and it was great. My favorites were the edamame dumplings, salmon nigiri, and pork bao. Also the restaurant is so gorgeous like the vibes are 10/10 and the servers were all kind and attentive! I gotta be honest for the price/hype I was expecting everything to be incredible and I'd say everything was good but only a few dishes absolutely wow'd me. On my recent trip to Austin my friend was appalled I had never been to Uchi. So when we saw this spot was walking distance from the coffee shop we had worked at that morning, she "twisted my arm" to go. Wow. What a vibe. It was a dreary Friday afternoon but you could not tll that from the folks sitting at the bar enjoying their lives in Uchiko. From the moment we sat at the bar, our bartender was so friendly and welcoming. He gave us a copy of the lunch menu and then I realized why this spot was the spot to have a long Friday lunch. There are awesome lunch specials and a lunchtime happy hour. There is nothing quite like being on vacation, ordering amazing sushi, and pairing it with a delicious wine that costs $5 with one of your girlfriends - like truly, that is the good life. Our bartender hooked us up with a surprise order of 4 different nigiri - all were awesome. He even sent us a savory mushroom skewer and a complimentary dessert. We had originally wanted their Kinoko nigiri but it's only on the dinner menu which is why he sent us something similar from the lunch menu. I got to try the white wine on the lunch menu as well as the lychee martini (just $7). Since it was raining, we got "stuck" in Uchiko for quite the long lunch, but it was absolutely fabulous. We got a last minute reservation at Uchiba for 9:30pm, they let us come in early at 9 and gave us nice booth seating. The drinks and food are amazing as always - I highly recommend the vice for a sweeter vibe! We also got espresso martinis which were phenomenal. As for the food, the sashimi was fresh and delicious. the a5 with caviar was a well worth splurge. I also loved the scallops for the appetizer! We were still a bit hungry after so we had to get the karaage. It wasn't anything special, the other food items we got were definitely worth it though! What an experience. Again, led by my coworker and her advice on restaurants all week, she suggested we go to Uchiba for sushi. After all of the BBQ we had, I wanted to try out other types of food Austin had to offer. However, this wasn't your ordinary sushi restaurant and turned out to be one of my favorite spots in Austin. Upon arriving, we were greeted by the hostess who told us it would be about a 10 min wait and this was during off hours on a weekday I believe. So I can only imagine that this place gets packed pretty fast during peak hours. The place was like something out of a magazine, and we opted to sit at the bar to avoid longer wait times. Once seated, we were greeted by the bar waiter and I honestly didn't know what to order so I let him decide my order for me. His exact words were, "we'll go with something cold and then something hot and I promise I won't break your pockets" and that's all I needed to hear. This wasn't your typical sushi restaurant so you couldn't order custom rolls. They only offered what was on the menu. The waiter proceeded to order the Hama Chili and the pork dumplings which were both amazing! He then gave my coworker and I a piece of sushi on the house and I wish I could remember what it was. After that we were still a little hungry, so we decided to split a Bluefin Otoro Makimono which was excellent! My coworker went with the Ba Burger, which I tried and was pretty good as well. Uchi is my favorite restaurant in Austin, and I've been eager to try its sister restaurant Uchibā. Finally visited last weekend for girls night out and it was so worth the hype! First off, the interior. Decor is beautiful and the restaurant has a dark, moody vibe. There is a little lounge area with sofa seating by the bar, standard seating, and outdoor patio seating. We opted for a standard table. Kicked off the experience with lychee martinis (absolutely fantastic cocktail!) and some starters to share. Standout items included the chicken dumplings and chicken karaage - both were phenomenal. I ordered a zero sen maki roll (featuring hamachi with a citrusy kick) for my main, and it was delicious. Ended our meal with "fried milk" dessert, which was so much more epic than it sounds. The name does not do it justice. A must try, so creative and unique! I had a great lunch at Uchiba. From the moment we arrived, the hostess was friendly and welcoming, and the waiting area was fantastic. Having such a spacious waiting area is honestly such an underrated feature for a restaurant. Our waitress was amazing and took great care of us. She started us off with the yuca chips, which were really good but definitely packed some heat! They were flavorful, but I could only eat a few before my mouth got a little too hot. I ordered the lunch special with the Hama Chili and the Tiger Cry Bao. Both dishes were delicious. The pork belly in the bao is absolutely the thing to order here, perfectly cooked and incredibly flavorful. Dessert came with a sorbet that was the perfect refreshing finish to the meal. I also had a glass of their Sauvignon Blanc for just $5, which was surprisingly good wine for the price. I did take the spicy tuna roll and karaage to go for my husband. I visited Uchiba for the first time over a holiday weekend in January, and soon after even visited sister restaurant Uchiko. I enjoyed all the dishes I got to try at Uchiba, and how they are incredibly vegetarian-friendly! My bf and I had dinner here during MLK weekend, and since it was an early dinner, it overlapped with happy hour pricing. My bf had a Resy credit through an American Express membership, and we were able to use that towards our bill. We started off with brussels sprouts, and then tried several different small, tapa-style dishes. I was able to try the Nasu bao (fried eggplant), the spicy crispy veggie roll, and uchiba fried milk dessert without the marshmallow/gelatin addition. My bf was able to sample the ba burger, pork dumplings, and wagyu tartar plus marsala. All-in-all, everything was at delicious and served with utmost care and professionalism. Came here on a double date and was really excited to check out their $25 lunch special! You get to choose an appetizer, entree, and get their seasonal sorbet. These are full portions too! They have this special every day. Since I'm pregnant, it's not recommended for me to eat raw fish. I was sad I couldn't have the Hama chili (my husband did though!) but I know it's delicious!! We've had it at their parent restaurant, Uchi. So I opted for the salad. As an appetizer, I thought it was gonna be a small portion but it was massive!! It's topped with a lot of shredded cheese too. Words cannot describe how much I love Uchiba! The service, ambiance and food speaks for itself really. One of the best sushi restaurants in town and it's always busy for good reason. Did I also mention they have an amazing happy hour? I love the vibe of Uchiba and the fact they have so many vegetarian options too which works well for many of my friends. Make sure to sit at the sushi bar it's so fun talking to the chefs. They have amazing service but I will say sometimes you do have to wait for your table even with a reservation. We also ordered drinks to go with our food, and I loved my rosemary-infused cocktail. All the omakase courses were delicious. The first course was a salad. I liked the crunch of the nuts in the salad. I also liked all the fish courses, which included their popular hamachi crudo. The salmon nigiri was probably my favorite out of all the sushi items. I also enjoyed the small chicken skewers as the second course. I wasn't the biggest fan of the burger. It tasted good, but it felt kind of out of place compared to the other courses. The pineapple pops at the end were a nice surprise. I don't usually love pineapple, but I loved this dessert. I left feeling satisfied but not full. I know this is a sushi restaurant but I have to start by saying that they had the best lychee martini I have ever had in my entire life. That is not an exaggeration; it was so light and refreshing but somehow also packed a bit of a punch without tasting of alcohol. As for the food itself, it was also really good! My friend and I split the uchiba salad (so good but I def prefer the dressing at uchi) and the kinoko skewers. I also had the watermelon nigiri which include goat cheese and a fig chutney. Uchiba is BOMB. I came here with a friend for brunch one day because I heard they did a $25 3 course menu on the weekends. Can confirm they do! It comes with one small item, one larger "entree," and a dessert sorbet. I got one of their sashimi sushi apps, it was small but DELICIOUS. My entree was the Uchiba burger, and dessert was a raspberry coconut sorbet. I also got the "hachi no hiza" cocktail at my server's rec when I asked about a floral/herbal option and it was lovely. My friend got the lychee martini which I tried and also LOVED, it had the perfect amount of sweetness. She also got the gyutoro donburi entree and three of the nigiri options. The total was about $85 before tax and tip, which I think is pretty standard. I'm giving 5 stars because for a nice place in Austin they do a great job, but they would knock it out of the park if the portion sizes were a bit bigger! I did leave still ready to eat a bit but I went home and had a small snack and I felt perfect. The ambiance is also very nice, it's upscale but not overly fancy. Bathrooms are very clean and all the servers are very kind. Would definitely rec a visit - I do think out of Uchiko, Uchi, and this spot that this one gives you the best bang for your buck, by far!! Ok while waiting in the lobby to figure out what to order, a lot of reviews mentions chef Austin and to request him. We did not request Austin but when we sat down at the sushi bar, guess who our chef was!!! We got Austin and It was meant to be. He was able to recommend dishes to us. All of the dishes were very good, and I loved the variety: sashimi, burger, skewers, salad, etc. It was a fun mix of things I probably wouldn't have ordered on my own. My only note is that, after roughly adding up what we got, I'm not sure it's really a "deal." We definitely got our money's worth, but I wouldn't go in expecting major savings compared to ordering directly from the Happy Hour menu. It feels more like a curated experience than a discount: which is still great, just different (not that they're claiming it is but it may be misleading since it's only available at HH time). Also! Maybe it was just me being extra hungry that day -- but I didn't leave feeling very full which is good (because I didn't feel like crap) and bad (obvious reasons). Just ok. The ambiance at the restaurant is excellent, and the downtown location is hard to beat. The service was also great--attentive and professional throughout the evening. However, Uchiba follows the same formula as Uchi and Uchiko: extremely small, tasting-style portions that feel more like bites than actual dishes. While the presentation is polished, the portion sizes make it difficult to feel satisfied - especially after spending a significant amount of money. You will leave hungry, which makes the overall experience hard to justify. At a certain point, great plating and atmosphere can't make up for portions that feel more like samples than a meal. In my opinion, there are plenty of better options downtown. Unfortunately, I've tried to like the Uchi restaurants, but the concept just doesn't do it for me. read more

Just like Uchiba's sister restaurants, Uchi and Uchiko, Uchiba offers the same fresh, deliciousness but in a less formal setting. The interior is velvet, modern, and effortlessly classy. We were pleasantly surprised to find a prix fixe offering during lunch on a Sunday. For only $25, the pre fixe includes an appetizer, entrée, and sorbet--UNREAL. I ordered the Hama Chili and the Karaage. Hama Chili, super refreshing and packed with the best flavors in solid cuts. As for the karaage, elevated chicken nuggets with a kick. But the real star? The 9-course omakase offered during happy hour for only $45. We were a party of 3 just having a ladies lunch with 1 lady that had been to Uchiba's for dinner and was our first visit for lunch. No parking available, it's downtown so you're on your own. There is parking at the Austin central library upon availability. We ended up at the building across the street that cost us $30 which was ok for downtown and 2 1/2-3hrs but this isn't always feasible for others. We had a bunch of nigiri (sake salmon, sake toro, bluefin otoro) and maki sushi (Hama chili, black zero sen), chicken donburi (not even close to traditional), it was very salty and formed into a chicken sausage and other sushi's that I may have failed to mention. We shared a black sesame seed ice cream that was the only generous option (3 scoops). Service was good, attentive but not enthusiastic. We had a few $7 lunch special cocktails that were reasonable and refreshing. Pro's: I liked the limited seating so the atmosphere is not the typical Austin norm of loud and overly crowded. We did make reservations. Cons: You're limited to JUST lunch menus, no option of dinner menu selections. We wanted uni, and others but that was a "no go" Wasabi was not offered and asked if we could have some with soy. When our $400+ check arrived, a teeny pinch bowl of maybe 1/2 tsp of wasabi cost $8 each which was not mentioned! This ruined it for me. It's the little things such as this that gives me negative vibes. We don't mind paying for good food, I just thought this was extremely ridiculous. So what could have been an additional tip to our waitstaff, was decreased, sorry. Upfront communication always works, no surprises. Some hits and misses. -(5/5) charred broccolini, it's criminal how good they made a vegetable taste. All veggies should be cooked like this -(3/5) kabocha tempura, not the best I've had but good enough. A tad too sweet imo -(3/5) tsukune yakitori, really soft filling but it was almost mushy -(0/5) fried Bao bun, it was supposed to have pork belly and shrimp inside and it tasted like nothing but a lot of fried dough -(1/5) spicy tuna roll, it was doing too much and I could barely taste the tuna. I have already been to Uchi before, so this is stop #2 of the Hai Hospitality Group restaurant tour. Like many Austinites, this is a staple on an Austin food bucket list. I'm so glad we made it during their happy hour & snagged the last lounge table. They get very busy, although maybe because we went on Friday night. I didn't see any reservations for 4pm-5pm on their website, all reservations started at 6pm so I assumed we wouldn't have a problem getting seated. I guess everyone also knows to show up at opening for walk-in seating. Throughout our meal, more people came to line up or arrive for their reservations. When we left, there was still a line of 10-15 ish people/5-6 tables if assuming couples that spilled out to the other side of the door. Both their inside and outside patio were full. Despite this, our lounge area was comfy & we weren't bothered by the other 3 groups seated around us. Another benefit is being close to the bathroom. We ordered most of our food from the happy hour menu, and two from the regular "core"' menu: the korokke balls & uchiba salad. They paced us very well, starting with nigiri & cold tastings and moving into mains & hot tastings (with the exception of the bluefin tartare which strangely got lost until the very end). Came here for their $25 3 course lunch and so worth it. My favorites were the brussel sprouts and the Hama chili crudo and the karaage. It was flavorful and crispy. I got the hot fried chicken bun to try something else. Did not expect it to be as good as it was. Chicken had a great crunch, sauce was good and messy, and the bun was toasted. We also ordered the pork belly bonburi bc who doesn't love pork belly. It was so good but whatever they put on their rice was addicting. I could not stop eating it. The hachi no hiza was my favorite drink I tried. Light and perfect for summer. They do have indoor and covered patio seating to protect you from the sun beating down on you. There is a parking garage right across the street underneath torchys but I paid $24 to park there for 2 hours. They do take reservations and hold your card on file for no shows. Their happy hour is such a gem, I (almost) want to keep it a secret. We saw the $90 for two tasting menu (9 courses!) and jumped at it immediately. It's SO much food for such a steal! It consisted of: 1 Appetizer - Fried Brussel Sprouts (delicious!) 2 Hot Tastings - Chicken Skewer (SO tender and yummy!), Wagyu Slider (good quality and portion but needed sauce... also needed to split it in two with a knife so hope your splitting skills are good ;)) 2 Cold Tastings - Tuna Tartare, Hamachi Crudo 2 Nigiri - Amberjack and Salmon, Amazing 1 Handroll - white tuna 1 Dessert - I don't usually like dessert but this one was heaven - the creamy white chocolate coating complemented the tart pineapple ganache interior so well. Overall a great experience during Happy Hour. Atmosphere is upscale, lots of hostesses available, waiters and well staffed. Friendly and personable. Food - This is where UCHI always excels, even their locations in Dallas & Denver. Uchiba is a good happy hour, lots of value and the fish is fresh. Yellow tail was flavorful as always, and a good pairing with Hot Sake. Can't beat the value during Happy Hour especially for the location in Austin. Conveniently located towards the Trader Joes & downtown walking areas. Dayboat scallops...the best. They melt in your mouth like absolute butter!! Salmon was nice, flavored well and their rice is always the perfect texture. Highly recommended! read more

The vibe of this place was upper scale bar inside but the patio was more relaxed. I loved that they had cute little match boxes! All the staff members were super friendly and efficient. The weekend happy hour was such a great deal. They had $5 cocktails from 11:30 to 2:30. They have two lunch special options. We did the Ba Lunch which included the hand roll, two chef choice nigiri, an entree (I picked the hot chicken sandwich), and a salad. Food Review: Spicy Tuna with the sauce was phenomenal. My biggest regret was not getting two sushi rolls. The burger was okay. I had high hopes for it but it just didn't hit. Maybe needed a new sauce - it was a little dry. The nigiri was amazing. Melted in your mouth. So good. Hot Chicken Sandwich: the chicken was great but the bun was oversized. Basic. The house salad was AMAZING. I would come back just to get that again. The citrus old fashioned was different than a traditional but it paired nicely with the syrups. Slightly disappointed in the lack of fresh ingredients. Get anything with the fish and the house salad and you can't go wrong. read more
