She ordered five handrolls (lobster, tuna, salmon, avocado and crab) and I ordered three (salmon, avocado and crab). The hand rolls were served on a black slat, which made the presentation of the hand rolls visually appealing. While Yuki Handroll Bar had really fresh ingredients inside the hand rolls, the seaweed was inedible for me. My friend was able to eat all her hand rolls and really enjoyed them. Oh, my gosh. This place, hands down best handroll bar I've ever been to. Service was immaculate and informational. The lady that served us was very nice and made sure we understood their menu and also provided us with information regarding today's specials and items not stated on their menu. They use matcha infused rice for all their creations. It really does bring different flavors and aroma when paired with their fresh fishes. Im not a handroll person but their handrolls were delicious. 10/10. What really blew me away was their nigiri options. The price at first was hefty, but after seeing the nigiris I've ordered, I can understand the pricing on that. The nigiri's were HUUGEEE! Took me maybe 3 big bites to eat one. This place is in the same plaza as the Grove. It's super small and cute inside. All of the seating wraps around where they make the rolls. We were in and out and it's a great spot for lunch. First time visit this past weekend. This will be a two part review. The service was great, the place very clean, oddly for a Saturday, we were the only customers at the time ( two more couples rolled in while we were dining. As noted in a non descriptive location and all seating is around a raised counter with bar stool seating. As noted the hand rolls are not ice cream cone shaped (Temaki) but rather done in a standard "log" shape. An extra treat was provide in the form of a fried salmon skin roll, at the end of our dining. Very tasty! We tried the Tuna and Yellowtail hand rolls - they were kind enough to cut them in half for us. We also had the Lady Gaga roll, and the Agadashi Tofu. All had a great presentation and were quite fresh and tasty, though perhaps they could dial back the sweetness in the sushi rice a tad. We will definitely return and I will update the review at that time. Note this is for the location on FM620. Also I forgot to mention, the meal comes with miso soup with seaweed and clams. As a really big fan of Handies Douzo in Houston, I have been very interested in finding a good handroll place in the Austin area. Yuki was a good experience, though parking was very tricky, and the prices are higher. The rolls were good, some of the comments on here say they don't like the crab roll, but it was actually one of my favorites. It's at least reasonable if you just stick to a three or four roll combo, the individual pieces are priced too high for what they are. Unexpectedly intimate spot in a wet lake strip mall. We had a delicious meal, the fish was incredibly fresh and well prepared. I thought the nigiri was more exciting, the hand rolls really are just sushi rolls with the one item in them, but the nigiri was beautifully prepped and delicious (although quite large!) Service here is great and the staff are incredibly attentive. The prices are more affordable than similar handroll places closer to downtown, which is a big plus. The menu offers variety, but I like the crudo options of the handroll place in Houston. I love the convenience of using an erasable marker to mark your selections directly on the menu--it makes the ordering process fun and easy. The nigiri pieces are impressively large, and the rice is soft with a slight green tint, which adds a unique visual touch without altering the flavor. The seaweed isn't crisp, the fish on some of the handroll orders are served as a slice versus diced so I am using my teeth to tear through and then kind of making a mess. I ordered madai, which had a piece of gristle, which was hard to work through and i believe should've been removed prior to serving. For about $60, I had three handrolls and a piece of nigiri, which felt like good value considering the portion sizes and quality. It's located in a small strip mall and has about 20 seats at the counter (sushi bar seating only). Hubby and I both had the 6 Handroll set (crab, salmon, tuna, scallop, lobster, and yellowtail). It was enough to eat but it just wasn't enjoyable for me. Half of the rolls (crab, lobster, and scallop) were all mashed up and tasted like mayo. That was my experience at YUKI. I got the veggie handroll combo and two extra rolls in the shrimp katsu and masago. I thought the masago was the egg one, but come to find out it is fish roe! I still ate the whole thing. My mom ordered a couple 4-piece sashimis for us to share (including chu toro, amberjack), and I tried two. I guess I haven't been used to the texture of fresh fish, so those weren't my favorite but I could still taste how good they are & how good a deal YUKI offers. The overall quality could still be better, as according to my parents the original chefs no longer work at this location because they are helping establish the new one. We've definitely been missing a good Handroll bar in Austin! My husband and I visited on a Friday evening. They do not taking reservations, so we arrived early around 5:15 and were seated right away. They open at 4:30 and it was packed by 6. There is only one U shaped bar to sit at and when it's full, there's a wait. My husband ordered one of the specials that included 5 preselected rolls and I ordered 3 separate rolls. The daily special was yellowtail. My favorite rolls were the shrimp katsu and scallop roll. The chef makes the rolls right in front of you. Everything tasted very fresh. This place is relatively pricey. The lowest priced handroll I saw was $7, so that gives you an idea of how quickly it can add up. I also ordered a glass of white wine. Three servers were circulating the bar and helping as needed. Seating is very limited and the U shape configuration offers that of traditional Japanese sushi experience. They do not take reservations so it is a first come first serve basis. I had tried their crab, scallop and chutoro...the crab being my favorite! The nigiri pieces were huge! This little 20 seat restaurant is in the same strip off Bee Caves where the Grove is located. Parking gets tight depending on the time since that parking lot isn't huge. Seating is first come first served along a U-shaped bar height top. Music plays in the background and you're greeted with an irasshaimase when you enter the restaurant. The waitstaff is nice and helpful while the folks behind the bar quietly work on your meal - wasn't much in the way of interaction. The menu has some appetizers, handrails, sushi and sashimi and also handroll combos. Prices aren't exactly cheap but are commensurate with the fare. The handroll combos are a good place to be and they range from 3-6 handrolls - it's good bang for the buck. If you start adding nigiri and sashimi you'll see your tab escalate significantly. That being said the cuts of sashimi are pretty large compared to other sushi restaurants and I believe the nigiri are a bit larger as well. Rice is seasoned although I'm not sure with what (it's green colored). They also have daily specials on a chalkboard on the back wall of the right side of the bar. We had: Seaweed salad - this was good for sharing - a little goes a long ways Chu Toro sashimi - comes with garnished with some seaweed/kelp, radishes, onions and greens with a little sauce and chilis on the bottom Yellowtail belly sashimi - also garnished very similarly to the Chu Toro. We felt the yellowtail belly was actually better than the Chutoro Sweet shrimp nigiri - nigiri with the fried shrimp head (very nicely battered and fried). When I heard about a new handroll spot, I was excited. Coming from LA, CA (KazuNori and Yunomi), my expectations are high due to the excellent service, quality, and overall experience. Unfortunately, the experience was mixed. Pros: - Parking is easy to find - Easy-to-read menu - Friendly servers - Crispy seaweed Side Notes: - Open lunch and dinner (Check hours) - A la cart + combo rolls - Beer, wine, sake, and bubbly - To-go orders available - No reservation system What We Got Done: - Asahi and Sapporo - Combo menu items 4 and 6 - Added Madai and Toro handroll What We Loved: The servers were friendly and quick (only one other couple). Service was prompt when we arrived, and they seemed knowledgeable about the menu. The crispy seaweed was great, and the delivery was speedy, as only one other couple was in the restaurant. Opportunities To Improve: Firstly, the decor and random things on the TV monitors could be updated. The sea animal documentaries/shows on the TV and stock photos of a chirashi bowl should change, as they lessen the experience of what they are trying to achieve at Yuki. Secondly, get the disinfectant sanitizers out of the way, which makes me feel it's a gentle reminder that you need it for some reason. Again, this is only my suggestion, but I understand keeping your hands clean. Thirdly, the dish prices were higher for the combinations (higher than Kazunori from LA/NYC), which I expected was an elevated experience. It's good, but for handrolls and at $35 for 6 handrolls ($28 at KazuNori in LA), I expected something better (naturally based on prices). Lastly, the music was too low. I could hear what the chefs were saying to the other couple of seats away from us. It was in the top 40, but perhaps it could use some other genre of music to set a tone there. Summary: This place has a ton of potential, as Austin needs more handroll shops with excellent fish, ambiance, and more. It was good, but I expected more based on prices and reading some of the other reviews. When you have places like Tsuke Edomae, it's hard not to compare the fish taste and rice quality to the overall experience. This may be the only one of it's kind in Austin and I absolutely love a handroll bar I'll start by saying that the handrolls are on point!The salmon and tuna ones were my favorite, filled with fresh chunky pieces of meat. All the rolls had fresh fish and the seaweed paper around it was great, perfectly crunchy! The rice was good but there was something missing, and it may just have been that I'm used to and prefer warmer rice The one handroll that was a miss for me was the scallop. Cutting the scallop into small pieces leaves more to be desired - it takes away from the chunkiness and great texture of the scallops and there's more surface area for too much mayo around the fish Overall the rolls were great and I'd say close to comparable to Kazu which is a great compliment. What was not great is the prices! The toro handroll is $5.75 in LA while here it was $12... what?? Something doesn't add up here for a popular spot in California vs a new bar in Texas to be double the price. Most other handrolls are around $7.50, still a little pricier than they should be Also an affordable sake option such as one cup sake ($6 at Kazu) would be great! Ambiance is decent, a nice minimalist space with opportunity for it to be further elevated Service was average but they may just be ironing out early kinks. While Kazu allows you to switch out shellfish in their preselected menus, this place does not. Seating was slow due to empty seats needing to be cleaned and our check took a while at the end. The interactions we did have were simply fine, not great With more reasonable prices and elevated service, this place could easily become a 5 star. Handroll bars are clearly undersaturated in Austin so this is exciting and I see quite the potential for Yuki. The combo is the least expensive way to go to experience a lot of variety, however you get what you pay for. The scallop, lobster and crab were all mayo based. Meanwhile, I've always had it as its pure self. The nori went soft after the second bite, even if the photo was quick For me, I felt that I could mimic the rolls we had at home so highly recommend to make the best of your outting and get the a la cart higher end items. The wasabi was the horseradish kind which, again, one of the shortcuts because handroll bars are supposed to be of better quality and higher end without asking. Here, seems you must ask and pay extra for it. Service... Compared to other attentive waitresses to their tables, ours was just okay. She simply did her job. We weren't really offered any explanations or told of any specials. It was very hands off. We had to ask for the bill ourselves and didn't get the chance to flag her down to order anything else which was a shame because we saw other tables order the sweet shrimp and really good looking stuff. They are getting into the swing of things, I'm sure, as I saw the chef make a roll way too early, while the table didn't even finish their first roll yet. This is a huge no-no in this bar service style of eating, especially when the nori is supposed to be freshly crispy when eaten. This place is gonna be great to the community. Everything was delicious and fresh. Staff was kind and attentive. My only suggestion is I wish they didn't press the rice into the seaweed because it makes it warm and the seaweed not crunchy anymore. We love kazunori for its crunchy seaweed and they just gently place the rice with the fish. But overall still really good! read more
