Tancho is a great mid-range option for sushi, especially if you want an omakase experience without breaking the bank or having to reserve your seat months in advance. The pricing is reasonable and the food was delicious. The only negative was the server but obviously that can be hit or miss. FFAST FACTS: * Parking - garage parking nearby with a QR code at the hostess station to scan for validation (up to 3 hours) * Reservations - available online through OpenTable * Online ordering - available for takeout on their website through ToastTab * Non-tipping restaurant but has a 17% service fee SERVICE - I wasn't impressed by the service. We had reservations for 7:30 pm on Valentine's Day and arrived about 5 minutes before our reserved time. We were seated around 7:50 pm. Our server, Henry, was all over the place... he spoke really fast, spilled a few beers right next to our table, and was very off-putting with his comments. There's just something about being called "boss" as a woman on Valentine's Day that doesn't quite leave warm and fuzzy feelings. The omakase was paced nicely... dinner took about 90 minutes from start to finish with extra rolls ordered before and after. PRICING - The total was $174.76 after tax ($13.30) and 17% service charge ($23.46) for 2 omakase ($41 each), unagi nigiri ($10), lobster and shrimp tempura roll ($17), scallop nigiri ($10), kukusui ($19). It's a non-tipping restaurant so you won't pay an additional tip above the 17% service charge. I think the pricing is reasonable for the quality of ingredients. OMAKASE (8/10) - This is a fantastic value! There are 10 different items that are served through 6 courses. My favorite bites were the toro open hand roll, sea bream, suzuki, and salmon open hand roll. It's a great introduction to omakase. I'd order this again! UNAGI NIGIRI (9/10) - One of my favorite bites from the night! You get 2 pieces and it comes with eel sauce, katsuo furikaka (dried and smoked bonito flakes), and kampyo (dried strips of calabash). The balance of flavors and variety of texture was phenomenal! I'd order this again! LOBSTER AND SHRIMP TEMPURA (8/10) - You get 4 pieces of lobster cut roll and 4 pieces of shrimp tempura cut roll on soy paper. Both were good and it's a decent value for the cost of the roll. I'd order this again. SCALLOP NIGIRI (7/10) - You get 2 pieces and it's topped with a wasabi salt. It was good but lacked flavor. I wouldn't order this again. This was my first time at Tancho and would return if I wanted an affordable omakase but won't rush back due to the experience with waiting past our reservation time and our server. read more

Great omakase for a good price!! Came here for valentine's day and was quite crowded. Our reservation was at 7 but waited about 30-40 minutes before being seated. We both got the standard omakase which consisted of about 10 different types of omakase that came out of about 5-6 plates. The first two plates came out pretty fast so the waiter asked if we wanted our plates slowed down which we did, but it ended up putting our food on hold which took about 20 minutes before we realized and had to ask to our table to be put off hold. Slow down plates =/= hold. The food itself was pretty good - the fish was so fresh and the rice was well made. Would come again! read more

I was excited to try this place because I love sushi. The concept is all omakase style at different price points. I ordered the signature omakase and I feel that it's a pretty decent deal for the price. They start you off with the Sunomono Salad. This salad was decent, but a little sour. I'd lighten up on the dressing. The tuna sashimi was pretty solid too. Every bite was delish and the staff were super friendly. There is a parking garage where you can get it validated so it's free. I highly recommend this place! It's a delicious Omakase place that offers 4 great tasting menus based upon preference and how hungry you are. It also has an à la carte menu. We chose the signature and executive tasting menus. I was completely satisfied with the signature whereas my husband received a few extra pieces of sushi with his executive. THE BIG: Finally happy that there is a North Austin location! Located in The Grove, this sushi spot is ultra modern but with warm wooden tones. Plenty of seating inside and parking is either street or in the garage. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I came here with a co worker to catch up when he was visiting from Canada. When we got in here around 2pm, the place was dead. We were the only people inside. Granted it was past the lunch rush. We ordered two omakases which is affordably priced and has 8 tastings. It first started off with the sunomono salad, before going into our first tuna sashimi piece. Then we had two yellowtail and salmon nigiris. Then we had our toro handroll which was the best bite in my opinion. Then we wrapped up with the albacore, akami and salmon hand roll. My experience at Tancho- Grove was great! It's a dimly lit spot that seems excellent for a date night. The food came out quickly and each item was explained to us. This is an omakase restaurant with a few a la carte options. They're very reasonably priced for it being omakase- the standard menu is about $41 and the lighter menu is $31. Drinks were reasonably priced as well. Drink options are limited to beer, wine and sake. I opted for the standard menu and enjoyed each option that was brought out. I wish I had been hungrier so that I may have tried more options. I will definitely be back! read more

My husband got me the Omakase to go and I loved it! Presentation is top notched with sauces, sushi, nigiri, salad and sashimi all nicely separated. The fish was very fresh even an hour after. As soon as you walk inside Tancho, you can notice the ambiance sets the mood for a romantic date night. Service was impeccable even though they are a non-tipping restaurant. Food is great, but that's where it ends. I went to order a $56 lunch online, then saw a $9.56 service charge slapped on there. I called the restaurant because I thought it was a mistake.... No mistake. I was told it's meant to take care of the front and back of the house. I hate it when I think I find a great restaurant and they resort to this BS. This is just bad form for any restaurant. Why not just raise the prices on the menu and don't try to sneak in a 20% up-charge for a carry out order.
