This review is for Uroko, the fast-casual temaki spot right next to Tonari, their omakase concept. Uroko has been a reliable temaki lunch spot for me in Austin. They're super efficient, and if you get there early enough, the food comes out pretty quickly. They also usually have a daily specials menu, which is a great way to try more premium or fresh catches. Their temaki are made really well, with enough fish in each hand roll so that every bite feels balanced and delicious, which I really appreciate. We popped over to Uroko for a light lunch after getting tea nearby and were pleasantly surprised! My friend and I each got 2 hand rolls, which were really yummy and a nice size for the price. I love that they have a few vegetarian options, and the food hall concept is pretty cool. We stayed and played a board game while we ate. I really appreciated that you could taste and identify the octopus chunks within, which isn't always the case for other places. The hand rolls were really good too. Words truly cannot express how much I love Urokos All You Can Eat Omakase. Things to keep in mind when coming here, this is all you can eat but it's a buffet style. The nigiri is prepared in front of you and placed on plates that everyone can go up to in a line and grab from. The etiquette is to let everyone grab at least one before going for seconds for new items. They also only do nigiri BUT the rice to fish ratio is chefs kiss . The space is very cozy and intimate and they limit it to I believe 12 people a sitting. The chefs are amazing and treat each piece of nigiri with so much care that everything comes out amazing. The interpreter/waiter(im sorry i don't know what your title is ) is also so kind and wonderful and he was on top of everything. There were always clean plates and water on tables. The day that I went they also had some blood left over from the tuna carving that they had done earlier that week and it was so good! Kept my promise and came back for their omakase! It's definitely top two in the city, and it's incredibly affordable. I came with two friends, and we were blown away by the experience and by each of the pieces. I love that it's a more traditional omakase so they stick to traditional flavors instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. I will say that the host is a bit rude and not very personable. When we came in, I asked if we could sit anywhere and he very rudely retorted, "No, you can't sit anywhere." The host and the sushi chef are both not the nicest and they stick to the menu and the experience, but I've been to other omakase spots where the sushi chef makes dining a true experience where they will chat and drink with you. Overall a pretty fine hand roll spot for lunch. They don't have a TON of options but enough variety that we grabbed six different rolls. They were rolled well but there wasn't as much fish as I may have expected. They're also a bit difficult to eat, as the majority of the non-rice ingredients, especially the fish, sticks out of the top. So once you have the first few bites, it's really predominantly rice and seaweed toward the bottom. I will say that the space the restaurant is in is really cool. We (party of 3) tried out Uroko as part of the AYCE Omakase experience. Start time was 5PM for 90 minutes of AYCE Omakase but by the time we were seated and everyone had a chance to order drinks and the host explained the concept it was 5:10PM. The seating is for 12 and it is served buffet style as All You Can Eat with 2 chefs preparing the sushi and an additional employee assisting with drinks and dishes. After all 12 of us had each grabbed a plate of what we wanted, the chefs quickly fell behind and it was difficult to find enough sushi variety after the third trip. My plates were 10 pieces, then 8 pieces, 3, 2, 5, 4, 1, 2, 2. After 45 minutes we were waiting for the next batch to be prepared. The chef made varieties using the same pieces of fish (salmon, hamachi, shrimp, tuna, beef, scallop, and a few others) and switched out toppings as he liked. 12 people was too many for an AYCE concept with only 2 chefs. The quality of the seafood was not high enough for an Omakase experience at this price point. The rice was not as flavorful and delicate as I would have expected for an Omakase. The seating is made for parties of 2 and if you want to sit more together you have to ask in advance. This is more of a unique concept but could have been executed better. read more

A friend made some reservations for omakase at Uroko for our Austin trip, and I had no expectations, because, despite Austin being a food city, I felt as though it definitely wasn't a seafood city. That being said, I was super happy with what we stumbled into. Uroko is located in a food hall/mixed use type building. It's in between a pizza joint and a huge coffee spot. Super casual vibes for the food hall itself, but the omakase portion of it is well hidden behind huge sliding barn door. There were two gentlemen working the sushi counter, and our party of 7 was the only one there for the 09:00 reservation. First of all, the fish was great! I thought the pairings of flavors were really tasteful, and the pacing was near perfect. I didn't feel as though there were any gaps where I wasn't eating anything, and the service was next level. Only 2 gentlemen were working, but that was totally fine to us. We were happy to engage in conversation with the both of them, and they were super entertaining. Was the fish the best sushi I've ever had? No, but it was certainly deserving of being called omakase and serving wonderful food. The star of the show was the service and conversation. It felt really casual and chill, engaging in conversation with both the sushi chef, and the other employee. I'm very comfortable and happy rating this joint 5 stars. If you're looking for the right kind of omakase experience, I think you'd be stupid not to go to Uroko. read more

Wanted a quick take out option so we decided to stop by Uroko and give it a chance since the reviews were looking pretty good. After trying it, I can see why everyone loves this spot! I started off with a Yuzu Sake Slushy and this was the perfect drink for the hot summer- cold, refreshing, and citrusy. As for the food, we got a couple different rolls: Salmon, Sake toro, Hama toro, Spicy tuna, etc. Everything tated really solid here- my personal favorite was the Hama toro (the crispy quinoa was a perfect addition). I thought I'd be left hungry after 2 but to be honest, they are pretty filling which was a pleasant surprise. There is a good reason Tonari by Uroko has been nominated for a James Beard award, namely because Chef Masa deserves one! The 45 minute omakase experience was absolutely fantastic. It was quick without feeling rushed. I was just so excited about each offering that I forgot to take pictures. It's not the type of meal you go to super hungry, but if you do you can grab a hand roll next door after. The 12 course are all nigiri, so it's a good meal as long as you're not starving. The main thing is savoring each bite, because they are layered with flavors that all work well together. Chef Masa is happy to accommodate dietary restrictions, and you can let them know when booking if you have any. The ambiance is laid back and intimate with only 6 seats. The room isn't tiny and the seats are nicely spaced so I didn't feel crowded. Chef Masa explains each dish, its origins, and where the fish is from. That makes the experience top notch in my book. Price is reasonable considering the quality of seafood you're getting. I'll be back and you should check it out! read more

This review is for their omakase experience. I was fortunate enough to be invited as a guest of an organization I support who won the 8 person event in a fundraising auction for Asian Eats ATX. I love sushi and this was my very first omakase experience! I had heard it was gauche to ask for soy sauce at these experiences, but at the encouragement of one of the other guests I asked for some to try, much to the dismay of the chef I gathered! Since this was my first time at omikase, I wanted to try it once and of course it wasn't needed. The samples the chef shared were delicious. My favorite was the salmon and then one of the white fish. The presentation was beautiful. Loved the 3 sake flight! My preference was for the latter 2 sakes in the flight. The only downside is that the experience felt rushed as we had to try everything within about 45 minutes time. We had a 5pm slot and the next group started at 6pm I think so we had to chat, get to know each other, experience the flavors all in a very short time. It wasn't easy to chat with folks at the other end of the 8 person seating area around the chef. I'd also recommend only white plates because as you'll notice for photo opps the black plates tend to show where prior served items were on the plate. read more

Such a great experience for the price point. Service was the most warm and welcoming of the omakases we've done in Austin so far. The oyster was a fantastic bite. The sushi was dressed very well. There was tamago at the end which we haven't gotten at other omakases if you're a fan. We weren't expecting to get wagyu at this price point so that was a nice surprise though the oven bake method seemed to make the rice quite warm before serving. I felt that as a matter of personal preference the rice was more seasoned with vinegar than my preference, overpowering the sushi. I was slightly skeptical since I didn't think three rolls would fill me. I was satisfied after three and my favorite was the sake toro. I ordered the hamachi, spicy tuna and sake toro. I'm not a fan of tuna, but I ended up ordering it to see how it would taste. It's definitely on the pricier side of sushi, but the quality is there. I like that there was plenty of parking! I've lost count how many times I've eaten here but it's been several months now and the quality and perfection of the food is always excellent! The service isn't always going to be fast and sometimes you have to be prepared to wait but they try their best to accommodate the lunch crowd and they do a good job of it. I don't have a favorite hand roll flavor and honestly I wouldn't be able to decide. All of them are delicious, fresh, and wonderfully prepared. I love that they have a less rice option for the carb conscious as well! I do want to take note of the Potato croquette. This savory side dish is delicate and crispy on the outside and really fluffy and creamy on the inside. It's exquisitely prepared and I order this every single time! Everything was delicious and affordable. My one critique is that for their salmon hand-roll, they did not fill the salmon throughout the roll. It was only 3 slices at the top. They should have place it throughout the roll too because it's not worth jt to just eat seaweed and rice for the rest of the roll. I heard that their omakase is great! First time coming to Springdale General! There is a lot of parking but each stall is quite small. You may have a harder time squeezing in if you drive a big car/SUV. There are multiple businesses and buildings but we visited Uroko for their temaki (handrolls). Uroko itself only has one table but luckily my family grabbed it. You can eat at the tables outside too but there aren't any big tables for families. The temaki are delicious but quite expensive. They are not very filling unless you order like 4 per person. This is probably one of my favorite Handroll places in Austin, there aren't that many we first got introduced to Uroko during the Pandemic when Katie put together a virtual Handroll making class and ever since have been hooked. They always give really good portions are located near a bunch of cute shops and are a good option for a quick bite when your in a rush! They also have a lot of pop up events next door in the space that they often do their omakase workshops as well as other fun workshops! I just finished the omakase experience at TONARI by Uroko. The sushi bar is to the right of Uroko. When you walk in, you sit at the sushi bar and are greeted by the sushi chef and the assistant that serves drinks/ assist in the meal. There are a total of 12 dishes, but we did end up getting 14 ( they added a ceviche for the first course and at the end a dessert course). The meal is a timed 45 minutes which went by pretty fast, but the sushi chef answered any questions I had during the meal. The food: The fish was very fresh with very different/ flavorful accompaniments to each piece of sashimi. The play on textures and fresh herbs is my favorite. I love when fresh ginger, shiso leaf, or crispy quinoa made it in the bite. Also, all the food was very beautiful and almost too pretty to eat. My ending conversation with the two chefs was joining the waiting list for their all you can eat omakase. The event happens ~once a month, but sells out very quickly. I happened to be at Springdale and wandered past Uroko on a Saturday afternoon. What a gem! Their hand rolls are so good and so reasonably priced. I had the maguro (tuna) and the avocado yuzu (vegetarian) and they were both excellent. I finally got to go to Japan a few months ago and Uroko definitely satisfied my craving for good sushi.
