I am so glad that we have a place like HokkaiSan in Austin. The city really lacks a lot of good classic decently priced Asian businesses but HokkaiSan checks off all these boxes. They have a limited grocery selection but their charm mostly comes from their snacks and the inhouse food. My friend and I came here for lunch one day and we got sushi, takoyaki, bao buns, and a salmon bowl which were all amazing and reasonably priced. The salmon bowl was my favorite as each piece was so fatty and fresh, it didn't have a fish smell at all. I will definitley be coming back.

A true gem of Austin. Delicious and high quality Japanese snacks and meals right at your fingertips. If you even remotely enjoy Japanese food/culture, this is well worth the visit.

What a cute store. Too bad it's on Congress where you have to find parking. I'd come here to satisfy Asian snack cravings if I don't want to drive 40 mins up north. Great service as expected.

Sushi is a reasonable price for downtown, I would recc eating it nearby or bringing a lunch box to put it in.. lots of options. Fresh fish like salmon and combo. Great spot for a quick lunch if ur feeling something grab and go! Service great, Grace was so awesome in helping me decide between all the sodas. They have white peach Pepsi ! The vibe was so cute and there was Japanese decorations everywhere.

Love this shop, great for fun treats and my favorite Kit Kats! All kinds of flavors, and they have other fun snacks. Chips, sweets and a few made food items. The store is always clean and organized, simple music playing as well. The staff is friendly and helpful.

This bodega has it all! It's small but packs a punch with so many products. And though they carry a lot of great stuff, it's not too much, or overpacked, etc. Super clean store with great service. Can find lots of favorites here (see my pics from a couple weeks back) from candies and treats to drinks, sushi, mochi, ice cream, and more. It's one of my favorite stops when walking from my apartment into downtown. Really a fun shop to pick up things you love, need, or want. I can sum it all up with two words: Super Yum.

This little store is super cute! I've walked around downtown many times and never saw it until recently so I wandered in. The staff told me it's been open for about 6 months or so (7 now at time I'm writing this). It's not a big place but I like the selection. They have a lot of premade stuff including sushi and kimbap. The prices are pretty reasonable, I bought an eel kimbap and it was like $4? They have lots of ramen and Asian snacks too, overall just a nice little place for snacks or a light meal. The sushi costs what sushi costs; the cheaper containers are $12-16 but they have bigger ones that cost more. Unfortunately since it's right on Congress there isn't much parking other than the handful of spots in front which are paid unless you're there M-T after 6pm.

They offer a wide selection of imported candies and snacks, along with sushi, Japanese cold appetizers, and hot bento items like gyoza, soup dumplings, and teriyaki chicken. I ordered a toro combo. It was good--the toro had a clean, mild flavor, but the rice was a little off to my taste. The interior is very clean, but there's no seating inside, so we ate on the benches just outside the store. There are only two benches, and while we were eating, someone had to stand because there wasn't enough space. I understand that this store is primarily grab-and-go, but there seems to be a need for more seating. I think it's great that you can easily pick up Asian snacks while passing through this area, but I wish the selection were more curated--I didn't see many of my favorite snacks, and some of the treats I shared with friends ended up being their favorites.

This is another gem in Austin!! We stopped here to pick up a quick lunch and the fish was SO fresh!!! There is a nice little seating area right outside the store to stop and eat. The employees were all so wonderful and prices were reasonable for the quality of the fish.

I dropped by on Wednesday around 11:30 AM hoping to pick up a hot snack after hearing about this place through Instagram. I was really amazed with the variety of Kit Kats they served. Lots of Japanese ramen, noodles, chips, crackers, cookies, and candies. Lots of sake and a variety of beer for purchase, along with non-alcoholic drinks. You can get much of your cravings satisfied here. Grab a quick lunch from here. They have hot food like tonkatsu, dumplings, yakitori, bao bun, spam masubi, and much more. There's a variety of onigiri. They also have some fresh sushi selections, both sashimi and nigiri plus rolls. They even have sushi party trays that can be ordered in advance. I grabbed the six pcs nigiri sushi pack for $13.99. Nice cuts of yellowtail, tuna, and salmon. Felt this was worth the money. The eel and the spicy tuna onigiris were both really good, nice portion of meat per rice ratio. The spam and egg masubi was yummy! The chicken yakitori hit the spot to curb my hunger before we made it to our lunch reservation elsewhere. Parking can be challenging, as it's in the busy downtown area. Prices are reasonable and service is friendly. There are some standing countertops outside the store along with two sets of picnic tables and benches for a quick bite. Note that there is a line of people if you hit the lunch rush so plan ahead. Otherwise, expect to spend some time browsing for some cool snacks and drinks.

A 4.5 rounded up to 5! This Japanese shop is small but mighty. You can find ready to eat yummies (both heated and refrigerated) and plenty of snack options. There are a couple tables in front of the store if you want to enjoy your food/snacks immediately there.

This store presents a wonderful atmosphere and is stacked with magical goods from across the seas. The staff was friendly and helpful. Next time I will remember to look for Hokkaido butter!

I think it's really important to have these diverse kind of shops around, especially downtown. It's really convenient, especially if there aren't really any Asian grocery stores around. But that being said, I kind expected more. It is a smaller shop, so I get why the there wasn't as big of a collection, but I feel like I would only really come here to quickly grab some snacks. Not really sure I would come back for the food. I tried the spicy salmon onigiri, and while the rice was good and seasoned really well, there was barely any filling. And the karaage was filling, but the batter was kind of thick and not crispy, so all of the chicken pieces were very chewy. I considered getting some of the nigiri/rolls but the fish kind of looked "fall apart-y" so I refrained. I know other reviews said the fish was good quality and fresh, but I didn't want to take any risks. Again, this is a great spot in terms of convenience, for the sake of diversity, and price isn't too bad. But I think I would always prefer hmart, 99 ranch, asahi imports more etc more.

I was browsing around anyway when one of the ladies kindly asked what I was looking for. And I didn't know what to expect my first visit. I thought I was going into a mini Japanese version of H Mart or something, but nope. This is very much a Japanese CONVENIENCE STORE with a little extra bonus on the side, so adjust any expectations. SIXTY PERCENT OF THE STORE IS NOODLES. Like WTF...is this a noodle headquarters? It felt unbalanced...like I had walked into the wrong store and wasn't supposed to be there. So many noodles, it scared me. I expected a variety store. Carry on. The layout is also a bit confusing for such a small space. I genuinely wasn't sure what areas were designated for customers and what areas were for employees...at one point wandering way into the back. My bad. They've got a solid selection of imported goods. Slightly pricey, but this is expected since they offer quite a few niche items you can't find everywhere. Still affordable, though. I HAPPILY grabbed some black sesame latte mix to whip up iced lattes at home as well as some black tea flavored soy milk. This is what you come to these stores for! The niche items. Now to the soft serve: Flavor-wise? Good strong black sesame flavor. Texture? Not so great. This was very icy and not creamy at all as I had hoped. The online pics were deceiving. Plus there were clumps in it that should've been blended out. However, it was refreshing and I could MAYBE see myself returning on a hot day for more if I'm close by. They only offer it on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It's good, but no need to run for this. You can walk. Lol. It scratched the itch but I'm not running back for it. All in all, not an everyday stop, but an "I'll see you when I see you" spot. Know what I mean? 3 stars.
