Why 5 stars? Because this immediately vaults to the top section of my Austin list. --- --- --- It's been a few days and I am still thinking about this meal. First off, it was painstaking to choose what to order because everything looked so good. That's always a great start to any meal. I eventually decided on the b.e.c. even though I wanted to order like 10 other things too. My friend was ordering a pancake and agreed to let me steal a few bites, so I ordered some cinnamon toast instead so that I could try more things. The b.e.c. nailed it. It was everything I hoped it would be to a T. I loved every bite and was sad it was over. I also upgraded to the cheddar hash browns and will copy/paste my thoughts on the b.e.c. for the hash browns too. As soon as I tried my friend's pancake, I knew I made a huge mistake. It was so great. The server told me that they make them with cornmeal to make them a bit more hearty. Why, oh why, did I not order my own pancake? I will regret this mistake forever. Don't get me wrong, the cinnamon toast was tasty, but it was so rich that it was impossible to eat solo. (My friend was not interested because he's a weird guy). I managed to eat a little more than half of it before I had to tap out. But the pancake, I would have crushed into oblivion. My wife and I came in on a Friday, around 10AM. We found this place via Yelp as well and wanted to take a look since I have not ate and she insisted I get something for health reasons. Upon arrival, the parking was a bit difficult to find. There was a sign that directed Paperboy east to; park in the alley way. It was also difficult to find parking as most were street side parking with a sign that has a no parking sign and restrictions. This puts a toll on wanting to come. Although, we did manage to find their small parking spot, it was nearly - if not all full and hard to valet in for any parking. Now... The ambiance was lovely. It was a bit packed; which is typically a good sign and their was kind of charm and peace to it. We were directed to sit on a roof top; which was simply nice and. We can see it being a nice rooftop casual dining environment. I can say, its great for couples or a place for a small group gathering. Wife was fasting so didn't eat but I had their Classic breakfast and here are my short review in a nutshell. Eggs: Over medium = done perfect! Potatoes = Crispy on the outside, seasoned sightly and not over the top while, a perfectly baked like inside = Excellent! A bit toast cut in half = was good! What's the best brunch spot in Austin? Some say that spot might be Paperboy. It must be up to me to come to that conclusion. My beautiful girlfriend, traveling home from Vancouver, had a morning layover in Austin just recently on a weekday, and I got us a reservation to Paperboy East. Compared to the weekends, their schedule was a lot more open. On the weekends it can be nearly impossible to get a spot unless it's a few weeks in advance. We had a reservation at 8 am right when they opened, and when we walked in, we were seated immediately. The place looks like a modern twist on the old-school diners your grandparents love. There's also an upstairs and downstairs patio. Plenty of space! We were sat at one of the two-person tables. To start, I ordered their house drip coffee while my girlfriend got their "Lil Remi," an iced cappuccino with salted caramel. The black coffee was excellent and flavorful, while my girlfriend thought her Lil Remi was like a milkier shaken espresso that she really liked. From their starters, we ordered their Blueberry Lemon Pop Tart to share. I am a sucker for a homemade Pop Tart, and the jam on the inside was extremely fresh, and the icing and crust of the Pop Tart itself was sturdy and full of flavor. For our entrees, I ordered their Texas Hash with added avocado while my girlfriend ordered their famous Paperboy Pancake with chocolate chips as a full breakfast with bacon and two over-hard eggs. It wasn't a long wait at all to get our food. The Texas hash looked great and was presented quite nicely, which is a shame because I immediately proceeded to mash it all together to make sure every bite had a perfect balance of the roasted pork, sweet potatoes, egg, and avocado. It was very filling and substantial, which is great because I needed it to last me up to dinner. The pancake is the star of the show and is worth the order alone. The flying saucer they serve rises like a cake in the oven and is extremely fluffy. She was surprised with how it was a traditional pancake but loved how moist it was for its size. A perfect pancake to her. A perfect pancake to me because she couldn't finish it, so I took it to go and ate the last few bites immediately after dropping her off at the airport. For being an upscale diner in the prime area of Austin, I knew Paperboy was going to be pricey, but I honestly thought that it would crack $100 before tip between the two of us. I was very happy to see it was not even close to that and cost us about $80 with tip. To me, that felt fair for Austin, and I would pay that price any day of the week for a breakfast like we had. This is my first trying Paperboy, I've heard many great things about it. The wait can get long on the weekends so I recommend going earlier before the rush. The ambiance in here is warm and inviting, there is a lot of natural light in here. It did get a little hot sitting at the table near the door but otherwise it felt nice in here. I ordered the chicken & biscuit along with a cheddar hash brown. I thought the food was pretty pricey but again this is Austin. The chicken was crispy, but a bit more crispy than you think it is. I had some parts where I felt like I was eating chicken jerky but the flavor was nice. I enjoyed the hot honey sauce on the chicken. The biscuit was harder than I expected it to be. I don't know what to say about this. The place is super cute, parking is whack. The menu is a bit simple but complex at the same time. First time bring here and the waiter recommended these items. I didn't expect it to taste like curry and I don't want to eat curry spices for brunch. 4/5 The fried chicken with biscuit is okay, the chicken was great, well done great seasoning. The egg was cook to perfection, the biscuit was dry though, and the gravy was a bit weird. It was more like a dressing than gravy. 3/5 Texas hash was sweet potatoes and pulled pork in what I can guess is like a curry sauce with lime, cilantros. I wouldn't order this again, we ate like 1/2 of it and didn't even togo home. I was expecting more like... breakfast sweet potatoes with a side of pulled pork, didn't expect that it was all mixed in and mashed together. 5/5 free rice Krispies, this was amazing. Unfortunately, the overall experience was brought down by the seating. When we were seated outside, we were told it was our "lucky day" because the patio had fans. I am crazy about their brunch Brown butter pancake - I would be skeptical about places claiming they brown the butter and I can barely taste it. I am happy I did not have the issue here. Plus the pancake texture was great - crispy, fluffy and full of volume Orange blossom cortado was wild - I'm not a coffee person but this was done right. They use their in house orange syrup (probably orange peel and sugar like oleo saccharum). I got one to go too Chai was okay - they could balance out the earthy and spicy tones better The chilaquiles were absolutely delicious too - crispy enough to crunch in my mouth and yet soft enough from the salsa rojas (didn't get protein here). The poblano cheddar biscuits was the right amount of dry with flavor dust and moist on the inside. We checked in to see how much longer it would be since the line seemed to be moving faster than expected. Even the people who arrived after us were seated already. We were seated outdoors in a corner directly IN THE SUN while everyone else was in the shade. There were open tables in the shade, but yet we were still seated there. At that point, it started to feel intentional. No one checked on us, and we had to flag staff down just to order. By then, we just wanted to eat and leave. Paperboy is such a nice brunch restaurant!! My sister and I were in town and after reading the reviews, we decided to head there early. Even arriving at 10:30am, there was a wait of 45min-1 hour (based on my text messages, we actually waited exactly 45 min - 10:33-11:18) and by the time we left, people were being quoted 1.5 hours. Definitely arrive early! I do love that you're able to buy drinks outside, but my sister and I opted to go to Take Heart a block down, which is a nicely curated shop with home goods, kitchenware, and artsy items. I want to give a special shout out to Brittany C, our server, who was very friendly and gave us really good recommendations for menu items. She also learned that we were coming from out of town and this was our first time here and got us a complimentary cinnamon toast! She told us that this was their oldest menu item and they are known for it and honestly??? That was the best thing I had all day. That cinnamon toast was delicious! I'm all about textures and I loved the crunch of the toppings. You have to order this because it's so worth it. We ordered: Earl grey cold brew: loved it - great tea and coffee flavors that blended nicely. Texas Hash & Classic Breakfast: these portions are huge!! You really can't go wrong with either item - the flavors packed a punch. My memory is a little hazier a month later (the cinnamon toast stood out more to me) but I remember we both liked our dishes. TL;DR: I would come back here to impress someone, but it is quite pricy. Food: I came here with a friend, and we split all of our dishes family style. We ordered the Paperboy Pancakes ($12), Texas Hash ($17), Steak & Eggs ($28), and each got the Harvest Spice Latte ($7). + I would recommend the Texas Hash to any of my friends coming here! The roasted pork is delicious and falls apart easily. It goes really well with the sweet potato, making this a filling meal while not feeling too heavy. The mole adds a little bit of sweetness and earthiness which I enjoyed too. + The pancake really was quite good as it is fluffy and has that 'melt in your mouth' feel to it. I wish for $12 it came with a second pancake, but it was still tasty. - I think the seasoning of the steak was good, but it tasted more cooked than medium rare. For almost $30, I would have liked more or thicker pieces of meat. The fries are really nice and crispy though. Service: I appreciated that our server was friendly and attentive, even providing an extra plate because she realized that we wanted to split all of our dishes. Even though this is a very high demand spot, I felt like we got proper treatment and were not rushed! Ambiance: This place is aesthetic both indoors and outdoors with lots of natural light. I was finally able to visit Paperboy after hearing SO much hype about it---and funnily enough, it was today, on a day many Austinites were expecting to bundle up at home! I had a feeling it wasn't going to be that bad, so my friend (an East Coaster, who also thought the pending "storm" was too great to be true) and I planned to meet here for brunch and catch up after many months. Sure enough, when I arrived at 10, all of the inside seats were occupied or being reserved for larger groups. At least I got seated quickly, even if it was outside on the patio. At least they had a heat lamp right next to our table, and I didn't feel that cold at all. My friend soon joined and we both ordered the seasonal Black Sesame latte, an 8oz cup that I customized with oat milk. We also shared the biscuits appetizer and for my entree, I got the migas plate. I was expecting the biscuits to have a crustier, crunchy exterior with a warm, soft inside, but they were actually super soft from exterior to interior. I also needed the pepper jelly that it came with to sense any flavor. At least the biscuits were small so it did make a great appetizer. My migas entree came out fresh and warm, and I requested a side of ketchup even though it did come with a green hot sauce. My migas were essentially eggs and tortilla strips, and it also had a slice of avocado on top with cojita cheese sprinkling. It also came with tortillas but the egg mixture was just enough to keep me satisfied! I left warm and full and everything tasted great, though I am not sure why this place is overhyped to the extent that it is. Sure, the menu offerings are great and there seems to be some variety with seasonal offerings, but it reminds me of many of the other local brunch spot faves in Austin. Wonderful place. We went in as a two too and were seated in the roof no problem. Our server Justin was amazing. Had just black coffee and it was very good. The steak and eggs were perfect. We came to Paperboy for brunch around 10am and waited about an hour, which seems pretty common. The wait was worth it. The space has a great vibe with indoor, outdoor, and rooftop seating, though the waiting area and parking are both limited. I had the chicken and biscuit with gravy and it was amazing. Fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. My husband ordered the Migas and loved it. Everything tasted like it was made with really fresh, high quality ingredients. I had a mimosa and he got a cocktail, and both drinks hit the spot. Overall, Paperboy lives up to the hype. If you do not mind a wait and can manage the parking, it is absolutely worth checking out. Paperboy has 2 locations, and this one is their location along E 11th. In terms of parking, there's a small lot right across that fills up really quickly. There's a decent amount of street parking nearby too. Highly highly recommend making an online reservation for the best use of your time! This was my second time visiting Paperboy, and the business has grown a ton in terms of popularity. The first time, I got the Texas Hash and wasn't super impressed (3/5 for flavor and price). This time, decided to check out some of Paperboy's sweet breakfast/brunch options. We were seated at the shaded patio area upstairs, which made for a really nice, relaxing vibe. Our server was also very attentive. Paperboy Pancake ($12, 4/5) - More than enough to fill you up! It has a dense, cornbread consistency, which I personally liked. If you're someone who likes pancakes that are fluffy, though, would recommend trying other things on the menu. - Comes with brown butter and a bit of sea salt on top, with the usual side of maple syrup - Option to add blueberries or chocolate chips for $3 Earl Grey Cold Brew ($5.5, 4.5/5) - Made with oat milk + earl grey honey syrup - Really liked the earl grey flavor, and it was a nice complement to the Paperboy Pancake Also got to sample some of the cinnamon toast and strawberry & pecan pop tart, which were both tasty! Overall I still think that Paperboy is a tad pricey depending on what you order, but I would be happy to come back for the sweet options on the menu.
