The 5th Street diner was a fun place that we saw as we were looking for a place to get breakfast. I've been here twice now when visiting from out of town. The first time it was the day after a snow storm and nothing else was really open. We were staying at another hotel down the street and decided to walk around town and this is one of the few places that were open so it was a great chance to come in and try out their food. Our waitress was amazing and very hospitable. It was a cool diner setup that's also connected to a hotel so it made sense where this was probably their only place for food but we were very thankful that they were open. I got that duck confit and waffle. It ended up being very delicious. And it sounds amazing too. And of course the waffle is in the shape of Texas. I also ordered coffee and our waitresses amazing about refilling it every time we're running low. Definitely recommend coming here if you're looking for great dining experience here in Austin. We dined here for breakfast twice as part of our stay at the Thompson Austin hotel and I'm honestly not sure why this diner is not well rated on Yelp. We didn't know what to expect based on the reviews but were pleasantly surprised by the delicious food and fast service! Over the course of our hotel stay, we had the opportunity to try a variety of breakfast items off of the menu, and everything was solid. I absolutely loved the spicy avocado toast (to which I added scrambled eggs on top) and the breakfast burrito! All the ingredients on the avocado toast worked together perfectly from the pickled red onions to the garlic chili oil, and the spicy chorizo + crispy potatoes in the breakfast burrito was to die for. I walked in and no one said hello. They weren't that busy on a Sunday at 12:30. I sat at the counter. Everyone walked by me and didn't say a word. Another man walked in about 10 minutes later and was seated next to me and given a menu. I'm about to walk out as soon as I finish this one star review. I've been here about 15 minutes at this point. It's kind of weird. Like one of those movies where someone dies and they don't realize it. I'm in Austin on business. Happy Father's Day to me. Hey, since you're gonna wait 40 minutes for your car, you may as well go eat breakfast. The attractive but simple modern diner gets props for having all-day menu and the coffee wasn't bad. The pancake was fine, the bacon crisp, and my smash burger must have been filling since I didn't eat all of my fries, which worried my wife a little bit. One star off for giving out wet cloth napkins. If they're gonna try to save time by not drying the silverware and wrapping them up instead, they should go out and help get the valet cars. read more

We had an opportunity to dine at Fifth Street Diner as part of our stay at the Hyatt Hotel. The diner was not well reviewed on Yelp but we decided to try it anyway. Honestly I'm not sure what these people were complaining about but the restaurant is absolutely amazing. It's beautiful inside. The service is amazing. The food is fantastic, very large portions, and honestly they're not overpriced at all. We had three nights at the hotel and we ate three times at this restaurant. For breakfast we tried their lunch menu as well, absolutely delicious. I love their salad, I love their goat cheese omelet, and I love their steak and fries. Highly recommend. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit in! The interior decor gives all the diner vibes and the food selections were wide enough to met all of needs. Our waitress, Brianda was so nice and sweet. The bread pudding French toast was absolutely divine. From the bread, fresh fruit and mascarpone topping DELICIOUS! This is a terrific diner on 5th St and San Jacinto. It's part of the Thompson Austin Hotel, and the diner is the breakfast venue included for those who purchase a room that includes breakfast. It's set up like an old 50s diner, or at least that's what they're going for. It's comfortable and welcoming. I had breakfast here every morning of the 5 days I stayed. The standout dishes for me were the Classic Breakfast, where you pick 2 eggs any way you want them, bacon or sausage (chicken or pork), and any bread as toast. The pototoes didn't measure up to the rest of the food items and I found myself leaving most of them. They're not crispy or very flavorful. It's an item they need to improve on. The sausage and the eggs were great. I also had the Bread Pudding French Toast one morning and I will say that was the best dish of all. They were fluffy and nicely cooked and included a good amount of berries. I would also recommend the half grapefruit, which they give you with torched sugar on top. The fruit plate included a good amount of pineapple, cantalope, blueberries and blackberries. I found myself ordering it in addition to the breakfast plate 3 times. The staff was very friendly and efficient. This diner adds to the experience at the Thompson Austin and is one of the reasons I would return. read more

Tried a few things here and overall it was a great experience! The steak & eggs were --easily a 10/10. Cooked perfectly and super flavorful. The breakfast sando wasn't really my thing--too much bread, felt like I was chewing forever (probably the sourdough), but that's just personal preference. Now the chocolate chip pancakes... WOW. Super chocolatey just how I like them. Definitely another 10/10. It's like a old school diner loved the vibe and servers were really nice!! I should've checked the reviews before I ate there. The kind of, food, that they served is in question. I was extremely disappointed in the quality and the taste. I couldn't eat the seed oil potatoes at all. It was difficult to eat the egg that was cooked with the seed oil as well. The bacon even tasted old, I don't understand why they can't cook, eggs and potatoes in the bacon fat, that's what I would do. Now that I know what I know, I would not go back or recommend. This is the definition of mid. Below mid. We ate there this morning. The restaurant was running a like, 40 minute wait which boggles my mind but we grabbed two seats at the coubter. Where we and another couple sat, ignored, by every server in the place for 10 minutes at minimum. And they were in our face bc the counter is where they all get beverages and stuff. And I mean- not a smile not a greeting nothing. We felt so unwelcome. Finally our "server" appeared and she had the personality of a turnip, and look annoyed she had to serve us. We ordered a latte, an Aperol spritz, a turkey club with fries and the smash burger with fries. Latte was fine. The Aperol spritz was 90% ice, 9.99% Prosecco and .01% Aperol. Terrible and I finished it in three sips- for $16. The club was mid- I liked the sour dough but they SLATHERED it in this weird, liquidy spicy red hot kind sauce. What was that? Turkey clubs are not supposed to be spicy. It overtook the flavor of everything and was gross. Fries were ok. Smash burger was $21 and bad. The bun was stale. The burger patties were way too small for the bun. The pickles were sweet and the burger had absolutely no flavor. I enjoy McDonald's more. The worst thing was actually something that someone else ordered. The lady next me ordered the avocado toast for $19- the same price as my double decker club and fries. They brought her a single slice of sourdough, ONE SLICE, and it had some mashed avocado on it and a single egg. That's it. On a side plate. For NINETEEN DOLLARS. That had to have cost all of $2 to make. I would have been embarassed to serve that. My sandwich alone, for the same price, even had THREE slices of bread. If someone put down a piece of bread with an agg and tried to charge me $19 I would send it back immediately. I don't care if this is Austin, or downtown, it was frankly offensive. We never got checked on once. Empty drinks, empty water, no one cared. I will never return. read more

I've walked by here a million times when they were closed. They close at 2, so no late brunch here. Super cute interior and I loved the quote above the bar. As a single diner sat at the bar and was pleasantly surprised the stools didn't have my legs dangling. I hate that as I'm not the tallest person around. Anyhoo, ordered coffee and the brisket hash. Coffee was good and the hash just had a ton of potatoes. Like tooo much. I'd recommend to ask for the potatoes on the side. The brisket was good and the eggs cooked fine. Service was prompt and friendly. Everyone that walked in the door is greeted right away, a team effort which was nice to see. We came here for brunch in the middle of the week which was awesome because we were one of a few handfuls of patrons. Sometimes when it's quiet, it's nice to be in a restaurant when you're just one of a few there being served. This was one of the occasions. Our server was very nice and polite and was there to serve us with a bunch of smiles and cracked a few jokes along the way. The Anthony Bourdain quote overhead gave it just the right amount of culinary ego, and the whole place felt like it was designed for people who don't mind paying $6 for tap water if the natural light is hitting their cheekbone just right. And I respect that. Noise level (11:30am, Saturday): Shockingly peaceful. No chaotic silverware symphony. No toddlers peaking in volume. People using their inside voices in 2025 is peak condition. Just chill brunch energy and one guy in a Patagonia hat reading the menu like it was a manifesto. 10/10. The latte: $6. Bitter. Drinkable. Came with oat milk and zero upcharge -- which feels rare enough in this city to count as a blessing. Not life-changing, but she got the job done and we avoided a caffeine withdrawal catastrophe. There were pros and cons. The food was solid. The house salad dressing was delicious. It felt kind of bare inside. The service was lacking. So many little order mistakes. It was like our orders were just suggestions. Cheese when things were ordered without. Salad instead of fries on one plate and fries instead of salad at another. Sauces ordered on the side dumped on. Incorrect meats on the breakfast dishes. Really long waits for second drink orders. We went early on a Tuesday morning and wasn't super busy yet but got busier by the time we got our food. We got seated quickly and the service was decent. It had 3 slices of bread to include all of the food jam packed in it and it wasn't necessarily flavorful either. The salad had lettuce that was wilting and it was t very appetizing. My coworker had the chicken tenders and he remarked that it seemed like they were cooked in old grease. The fried were crispy and good with the sauce. I came twice, once on a weekday and again on a very busy Sunday. My second visit was much better, both in service and food. So overall a 3 star experience if you average the two visits. A friend and I were in town for the food and Wine festival. It was our first time coming to Austin. And it did not disappoint. This city has so many different restaurants and live music everywhere. We were looking for a breakfast spot, the reviews were encouraging and it was within walking distance. The staff was very welcoming. We were seated immediately. The food was absolutely delicious especially the French toast. I got a traditional American breakfast with scrambled eggs, bacon, and potato hash. Also had a vanilla latte which was actually really good. The diner was really cute. I love the flooring with the black-and-whit tile, which made you feel like you were at a traditional diner. They had really nice decor including the black-and-white pictures of famous Texans on the wall. I would highly recommend this restaurant. read more

My classic breakfast (eggs, sausage, potatoes and toast) was ~ok but, partner had the omelette. Generally, at a diner, the options for omelettes are seemingly limitless. Our server disappeared for long stretches of time, and it took over 45 minutes to get two simple breakfast plates -- in a diner, no less!
