I walked in and no one said hello. They weren't that busy on a Sunday at 12:30. I sat at the counter. Everyone walked by me and didn't say a word. Another man walked in about 10 minutes later and was seated next to me and given a menu. I'm about to walk out as soon as I finish this one star review. I've been here about 15 minutes at this point. The pancake was fine, the bacon crisp, and my smash burger must have been filling since I didn't eat all of my fries, which worried my wife a little bit. One star off for giving out wet cloth napkins. If they're gonna try to save time by not drying the silverware and wrapping them up instead, they should go out and help get the valet cars. read more

We had an opportunity to dine at Fifth Street Diner as part of our stay at the Hyatt Hotel. The diner was not well reviewed on Yelp but we decided to try it anyway. Honestly I'm not sure what these people were complaining about but the restaurant is absolutely amazing. It's beautiful inside. The service is amazing. The food is fantastic, very large portions, and honestly they're not overpriced at all. We had three nights at the hotel and we ate three times at this restaurant. For breakfast we tried their lunch menu as well, absolutely delicious. I love their salad, I love their goat cheese omelet, and I love their steak and fries. Highly recommend. This is a terrific diner on 5th St and San Jacinto. It's part of the Thompson Austin Hotel, and the diner is the breakfast venue included for those who purchase a room that includes breakfast. It's set up like an old 50s diner, or at least that's what they're going for. It's comfortable and welcoming. I had breakfast here every morning of the 5 days I stayed. The standout dishes for me were the Classic Breakfast, where you pick 2 eggs any way you want them, bacon or sausage (chicken or pork), and any bread as toast. The pototoes didn't measure up to the rest of the food items and I found myself leaving most of them. They're not crispy or very flavorful. It's an item they need to improve on. The sausage and the eggs were great. I also had the Bread Pudding French Toast one morning and I will say that was the best dish of all. They were fluffy and nicely cooked and included a good amount of berries. I would also recommend the half grapefruit, which they give you with torched sugar on top. The fruit plate included a good amount of pineapple, cantalope, blueberries and blackberries. I found myself ordering it in addition to the breakfast plate 3 times. The staff was very friendly and efficient. This diner adds to the experience at the Thompson Austin and is one of the reasons I would return. read more

Tried a few things here and overall it was a great experience! The steak & eggs were --easily a 10/10. Cooked perfectly and super flavorful. The breakfast sando wasn't really my thing--too much bread, felt like I was chewing forever (probably the sourdough), but that's just personal preference. Now the chocolate chip pancakes... WOW. I should've checked the reviews before I ate there. The kind of, food, that they served is in question. I was extremely disappointed in the quality and the taste. I couldn't eat the seed oil potatoes at all. It was difficult to eat the egg that was cooked with the seed oil as well. The bacon even tasted old, I don't understand why they can't cook, eggs and potatoes in the bacon fat, that's what I would do. Now that I know what I know, I would not go back or recommend. This is the definition of mid. Below mid. We ate there this morning. The restaurant was running a like, 40 minute wait which boggles my mind but we grabbed two seats at the coubter. Where we and another couple sat, ignored, by every server in the place for 10 minutes at minimum. And they were in our face bc the counter is where they all get beverages and stuff. And I mean- not a smile not a greeting nothing. We felt so unwelcome. Finally our "server" appeared and she had the personality of a turnip, and look annoyed she had to serve us. We ordered a latte, an Aperol spritz, a turkey club with fries and the smash burger with fries. Latte was fine. The Aperol spritz was 90% ice, 9.99% Prosecco and .01% Aperol. Terrible and I finished it in three sips- for $16. The club was mid- I liked the sour dough but they SLATHERED it in this weird, liquidy spicy red hot kind sauce. What was that? Turkey clubs are not supposed to be spicy. It overtook the flavor of everything and was gross. Fries were ok. Smash burger was $21 and bad. The bun was stale. The burger patties were way too small for the bun. The pickles were sweet and the burger had absolutely no flavor. I enjoy McDonald's more. The worst thing was actually something that someone else ordered. The lady next me ordered the avocado toast for $19- the same price as my double decker club and fries. They brought her a single slice of sourdough, ONE SLICE, and it had some mashed avocado on it and a single egg. That's it. On a side plate. For NINETEEN DOLLARS. That had to have cost all of $2 to make. I would have been embarassed to serve that. My sandwich alone, for the same price, even had THREE slices of bread. If someone put down a piece of bread with an agg and tried to charge me $19 I would send it back immediately. I don't care if this is Austin, or downtown, it was frankly offensive. We never got checked on once. Empty drinks, empty water, no one cared. I will never return. read more

As a single diner sat at the bar and was pleasantly surprised the stools didn't have my legs dangling. I hate that as I'm not the tallest person around. Anyhoo, ordered coffee and the brisket hash. Coffee was good and the hash just had a ton of potatoes. Like tooo much. I'd recommend to ask for the potatoes on the side. The brisket was good and the eggs cooked fine. We came here for brunch in the middle of the week which was awesome because we were one of a few handfuls of patrons. Sometimes when it's quiet, it's nice to be in a restaurant when you're just one of a few there being served. This was one of the occasions. Very odd interaction. Walked into a busy restaurant. Entire time host is running around busy. Completely understand. But at no point acknowledged or said anything to me. A family walk in behind and she greets them then looks at me waiting for me to say something. I say just a party of me. She asked if I was staying at the hotel. I said no.
