While staying at the Hotel Van Zandt, our group used Café 605 as our daily morning meeting place as its within the hotel. As guests of the hotel, we received unlimited free drip coffee from the café between 6:00-10:00AM each day which was a nice perk! The café itself is cute and has a great selection of items for coffee, breakfast or lunch. During my stay, I tried the following: - Drip Coffee - Good coffee with your basic breakfast blend (or something similar) - Strawberry Cream Cheese Danish - so delicious! A favorite here! - Ham, Egg and Cheese Breakfast Croissant - every bit of this as perfect! A second favorite here! - Blueberry Muffin - very soft and not overly sweet - Plain Croissant - super flaky and soft! One of the best I've had! - Chai Pudding - Average chai pudding with fresh fruit - Espresso Martini - Ok tasting and not very sweet. Go across the street to Electric Shuffle for an espresso martini instead The food items and drinks aren't cheap but are what you would expect for a hotel café! I would definitely go back if staying within the hotel or if I lived on Rainey Street but wouldn't go out of my way to visit! read more

Okay, keep in mind what this is. This is the coffee house inside the Hotel Van Zandt. Anyone who has ever stayed in a hotel and has wanted coffee knows that the average hotel coffee house is awfulness on a stick. It is generally a Starbucks, in some small and ungainly location that represents "extra space" that gets rented out. The food offerings are smaller than those of a normal Starbucks because they don't have the backspace needed to keep the offerings good. You "can" if you want get a coffee from the hotel main restaurant. Expect to pay $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for nothing special. * * * Cafe 605 is way better than that. * * * Okay, Keep in mind the neighborhood. Rainey Street is a coffee desert. Rainey Street is about drink drink drink party party party. There are some decent food trucks. There are a few upscale restaurants. What do you do if you are staying in the area and you want to drink coffee and get some work done? At the price of a long long walk, you can get to Wright Brothers Brew and Brew. Other hotels have an in-house Starbucks etc etc etc with all the badness previously described. * * * So by Rainey Street standards, Cafe 605 is the last housely home in an orc-filled wilderness. * * * What do you get for your trip to Cafe 605? a) Their own house brewed coffee. The espresso is a unique mix of half mud-half bitter. My own taste is for all out bitter, and my next-best favorite is all out mud. But I can go with their distinctive 50-50 hybrid. b) Really really good food. The menu is limited but what they have is first rate. My accompanist and I both had the BBQ brisket sandwich. It was honest FATTY brisket! When do you ever ever see a hotel serving fatty brisket? The sauce was good and the whole sandwich came together nicely. Much more interesting than the microwaved paninis available you-know-where. c) A fantastic giant wood work table made from some huge tree trunk and varnished nicely. Sockets discretely available under the table at every other seat. Classy leather barstools to sit in with lots of cushioning to make them really comfortable. I could have worked there for hours and hours and hours. * * * The person I was with said this was his favorite coffee house in Austin and that he wanted to come back. You have to pay for Rainey Street parking if you are a townie wanting to visit - and the prices run towards the high side. (But not to the extreme rip-off levels typical of the worst of the top-line hotels.) However, if I was staying at the hotel, I would practically live in this establishment. If I lived in a Rainey Street condo, Cafe 605 would be my home coffee shop for sure. There is no reason why premium hotels have to have coffee shops that are as bad as they are. The Hotel Van Zandt is schooling the rest of the industry in how to be cool. read more

We stopped in last Saturday to cool off with some iced coffee. I really love the decor of this place - modern and trendy with rustic touches (the live edge wood table is gorgeous). The menu consists of coffee, drinks, and food. The pastry case is displayed next to the register, and the far will is filled with souvenir items in lit display cases. The girl behind the counter was friendly and fast. We ordered 2 iced coffees and a glass of wine, and the bill came out to roughly $25, which isn't terribly surprising given the location. The coffee was good - my husband seemed to like it more than Starbucks, but he's no coffee connoisseur. I can't speak for the food, but overall, a pretty cool place to hang out for a bit. read more

Little cute coffee shop at the bottom of hotel Van Zandt. Great spot to grab a nice coffee if you're staying at the hotel or strolling down Rainey street. I am certainly not a coffee connoisseur but the cappuccino was good. Also had a breakfast sandwich that also hit the spot. It's clean, spacious and the guy that served us was chipper and friendly. Prices are a little high and he was working on his own so sanitation of the surfaces between guests isn't always the quickest. That's the only reason for 4* and not 5! Will be revisiting! read more

Brand new cafe that opened in a brand new hotel. I had the honor of experiencing this place multiple times and for a hotel cafe, it's pretty awesome. I had their coffee and teas multiple times over the course of two days and even had the chance to enjoy their breakfast sandwich. While you can't really mess up the coffee and tea, I was satisfied with my drinks and have no complaints there. My breakfast sandwich was made to order and while it did take a few minutes to make, it was worth it. Super fresh, delicious and you can tell they use quality ingredients. The staff were all super friendly and there are great options for everyone. From coffee to tea to fresh juices, to bottled juices and boxed wine. They even have breakfast and lunch sandwiches as well as some cookies and brownies and yogurt parfaits. If you're looking for a unique, fun and cool souvenir, this place also sells some fun spreads that make for a great gift. All in all, if they can keep up with the great service and offerings, it'll be a great fit for the hotel and great place to stop by for a quick bite. read more

They serve a decent coffee with alternative non-dairy milks. The breakfast taco and other items can be warmed up in a similar microwave/convection oven thingie that Starbucks uses in their stores. The brisket breakfast taco is okay and will get you by, but seriously, you can get better eats for the price and location. The service here is very friendly. read more

Nice coffee shop but for my whole review you can add "for a hotel lobby" as a caveat at the end. A big pricy but actually not bad "for a hotel lobby". Good selection of grab and go items. Breakfast tacos and breakfast sandwiches. Decent coffee and espresso. Lunch food. Snack for a walk. Bottle drinks. An infinite upgrade from the typical urn of Starbucks offered in many hotels. Nice spot to grab a coffee on your way out of the hotel, not too pricey. Breakfast tacos are $3. I got the bacon, egg, and cheese which came with salsa. It was tasty, but made before hand and microwaved which caused the tortilla to be a little hard on the ends. Great coffee, awesome & consistent service levels. I am in love with the short rib breakfast tacos! They've changed up the taco sauce some and are refining the pastry menu a bit. There's also a nice collection of unique Austin gifts in the shop as well. Again...the short rib breakfast tacos are THE BEST BREAKFAST TACOS EVER! I came here quite a few times during my stay at the Van Zandt. First of all the $3 brisket, egg & cheese taco is so yummy and just the right size for a satisfying yet not overly filling breakfast. Coffee drink prices are average, unlike some cafes inside hotels that usually ridiculously inflate their prices for convenience. The space is so nicely decorated with ample seating. I also appreciate that they offer some booze options so I can grab a quick drink and chill out while we figure out where we're going to explore next in Austin. read more

We had a quick breakfast here before heading back to San Antonio. By 11am the pastries had been picked over and what I wanted (a chocolate croissant) wasn't available. The breakfast taco I ordered had been assembled beforehand and was microwaved to heat up. My wife's ham croissant was microwaved too. The coffee was nice and hot but cheap tasting. For such a fancy hotel this cafe does not meet expectations. The service was poor as well. There are much better options for the price. read more
