What a great theatre that gives total indie, arthouse vibes. A small theatre with, I believe, four screens. I have been wanting to see a movie here for quite a while and finally got a chance to do so. The seats are surprisingly comfortable (even if you are in a regular seat and not one of the more luxurious, reclining styles). The bar and snack bar offer a variety of refreshments from popcorn and soda to chips/queso, pizza, candy, cocktails, mocktails, and more. Very friendly & helpful staff. The theatre was extremely clean, though I found it frustrating to find people leaving trash behind upon exit (popcorn container and cups on the stairwell). In no way were the staff at fault. But, help them out, there are trash cans at each theatre entrance. Bathrooms were spotless. read more

This was a very disappointing experience. I want to be clear that none of this was the fault of the staff we interacted with at Violet Crown--they were friendly and appeared to be doing their best, although they seemed understaffed. Unfortunately, almost every part of the experience was frustrating. We had technical issues with our tickets at the entrance, where they wouldn't scan to print, which delayed us before we even got inside. We then waited over 15 minutes in line to order drinks and food, causing us to miss the beginning of the movie. After ordering, you're given a pager that buzzes when your food is ready, meaning you have to leave the theater to pick it up yourself. Once inside, we found the theater to be extremely small. Getting to our seats required squeezing past several people, and the seats themselves were cramped, didn't recline, and had tiny tray tables that awkwardly pull out from the side of the neighboring seat. It made the whole setup feel uncomfortable. When our pager buzzed, we had to climb over everyone again to retrieve our food. By that point, we'd already missed enough of the movie that we had no idea what was happening, so we decided to leave. Overall, the experience was frustrating from start to finish read more

Love the downtown location. The theaters are great and staff so friendly. The seats are very comfortable and sound system is perfect.

I arrived 20 minutes before my movie and ordered nachos and a caesar salad. It took over 50 minutes to come out. It really ruined the whole beginning of the movie for me having to stand by the stairs trying to watch the movie while I was waiting for my food and wondering if they'd forgotten my order. Also, the theater next to us had a loud action movie playing and you could hear all the sounds and loud music reverberating through the walls, especially during the quiet sensitive parts of the drama I was trying to watch. Overall, a terrible experience. There are much better places in Austin to go for a movie. read more

This is a nice theater to see a movie at! This location is smack in the middle of downtown Austin, which makes it easy to walk to (avoid paying for parking anywhere!) The staff were friendly and the theater was comfortable and clean. The picture was clear and the sound was just right. All in all I was fairly happy with my movie going experience here! read more

Not very many places to see art house movies or limited release movies any more and since Alamo draft house is Sony this is being more the case. I haven't been here since before the pandemic and it's a little more run down since I remember it. The seats are fine and it's a downtown multiplex so my experience is that it will be very intimate. Sadly movie going hasn't recovered to pre covid levels and I was one of 9 people in probably a 60 seat theater. I just got a sparkling water and m&m's and the m&m's even though refrigerated felt stale. So I wonder if the cooked dishes are better. They do have more substantial dishes but I'm not sure how you would eat them inside the theater since there aren't any tables. Oh and the men's restroom needs allot of help. I suspect there's a sewage issue as it just reeks of urine so I had to hold my breath. Will I go again - yes because sometimes it's nice to go out and watch a movie. There aren't many places that host smaller run releases any more and it would be sad to see these places go. I just won't get the candy or go to the restroom here. read more

The staff was absolutely amazing here along with Sxsw staff. I felt a heat stroke coming on from the sun and they gave me some water and two sodas. The chairs were very comfortable. I saw two great movies. I got comfortable chairs for the third showing. I got to thank the good guy for helping me. Violet Crown is the neighborhood gem you never knew about. For the past couple of years I would walk by & make a metal note to check it out. Finally, while surfing movie theaters to watch Nosferatu, VC was an option. I loved several things about the ticketing process. One, the prices are reasonable. Two, the price includes parking in the attached garage for up to 4 hours. Three, all of the theaters allow you to choose a seat and four, no "convenience fees". The theater is small and only shows about a handful of movies, but it is intimate. However, the downside to being small and intimate theater is that if anyone makes a noise, you can hear it and I do not think I would like to see a movie here where kids are in attendance. What a cute local theater!! The vibe is great - front the walk up the stairs, a view over the trees, and a welcoming lobby. The staff was so personable as well. We started with a few beers and queso while we waited for our movie to seat! All was great and ordered a popcorn to enjoy during the film (very good - not too buttery like some). I'd be interested to try the first row as looked like some comfy seats. My only complaint is a few chairs looked like they could use some TLC - but overall can't wait to come again! read more

This theater has a few screening rooms and offers limited seating, which makes you feel more exclusive and makes the experience feel more personable. Great theater -- with a consistently horrible experience. Canceling tickets is a project unlike canceling tickets at any other theater. You are required to accept all of their cookies in order to get past their app and web pop-ups -- which you must do in order to be able to buy a ticket and which I believe is illegal. They send spam, even if you don't opt-in to it. Their management is unresponsive and MIA -- and even ignore emails sent to the email address on their website. read more

Seats were squished and concessions were frustrating. They didnt have ice, long straws for big drinks, butter was hard because it had been unplugged, and food took a long time. Movie had started and then I had to run out and grab everyone's food while the buzzer was lighting up in the dark movie theater. Parking was expensive and everything at the theater was expensive too. read more

This is a my favorite cinema . Mainly , because Kenny , the manager is so kind and personable everything I go there . I also love how their popcorn is cooked in coconut oil and they use real butter . Very rude staff. They don't post their movie offerings until sometimes less than a week beforehand. Only update the website with offerings on Thursdays, and the manager refuses to even get on the phone when you call to ask about upcoming shows. I love the theater but won't return because of the rudeness of the staff, and their inability to get their act together to notify the public about what their upcoming shows are in a reasonable advance manner. read more

The Violet Crown Cinema is a really cool place to experience films. It is in the heart of Second Street District where before or after the movie you can walk around checking out boutique shops and local eateries. There are a few parking garages nearby where one provides free parking for four hours and can enter on San Antonio Street between 2nd & 3rd Streets. I parked at Austin City Hall garage. We arrived early to our show so we could enjoy lunch at their cafe/bar. The place supports local businesses with food and drink choices. I ordered Grilled Cheese and a local draft beer. There is plenty of seating and even though can take your food with you in the cinema. The lobby bar is a great place to hang out. This is an artsy move theater where today we were seeing '1917'. The theaters are reasonably small but has great comfy chairs that recline. The sound and video are top notch. Once this virus outbreak dissipates will once again return. read more

Violet Crown is a great little theater in downtown not too far from the Willie Nelson statue at Moody. It has a place to order snacks & cocktails, spots to sit at the bar and a longe area. There is a self serve ticket kiosk when you walk in. I was here for a lionsgate screening to see "I still believe" and it was a great movie; very moving. Go see it when it comes out in March. The staff is friendly and social, the establishment looks clean and quaint, and the theaters have cushion chairs that go back a bit which makes it more comfy. the theater I was in is small but I like it because its not a huge packed room. You can park in the garage on san antonio st and they will validate your parking up to 4 hours. We had a cocktail while waiting and tried the Sister Sara. It has a few different ingredients in it but one is ginger beer. It was really good and they add blackberry with the drink. Very yummy. You can take your drink and snacks into the theater as well. Overall experience was great. We had a great time, great drink & seen a great movie. I would definitely recommend this spot. Ill be returning to watch another movie with some snacks and a cocktail. read more

This was one of the best movie theaters that I have ever been to. We have not been to a movie theater in over two years, and we have a baby. It's beautifully intimate, thematic, and approachable. We ended up seeing Batman, and they had themed food and drinks that we happily had in the lounge with a beautiful view before the film itself. The bartenders even had a friendly competition of giving us the most fun themed drinks for us on the spot because we were so excited. All of them were superb! Their palettes were over the top phenomenal and they're so passionate about their creations. The Vigilante pizza was also amazing. I felt very adventurous trying this as I am not one to mix much of sweet with savory, but every single part of the pizza was extremely decadent. I've been to some of the top places in Los Angeles, and they would not even compare to how good this place was. The staff were so amazingly accommodating. There is this one sweet girl who should be a model with wavy hair, who is over and beyond trying to accommodate us with a full house. She also made sure to offer us a free refill on the popcorn, and even gave us suggestions on where to go as we were just visiting in town. Usually we go to AMC Burbank and the Laemmle's where we live, and this was a wonderful mix between the two. Best of both worlds in my opinion. Over and beyond those worlds. Super cozy and not a lot of people can be in the theatre at once. They also do have better food selection vs a traditional theatre with nachos and hot dogs, so you can enjoy a dinner & a movie while you're here! I will say it's a little more pricey & if you get the inside seats of the theatre you have to walk in front of everyone to step out of the movie! read more

The theater and bathrooms were clean and well kept although perhaps a wee bit dated but it is an independent theater so that can be forgiven. This is a great boutique cinema in downtown Austin. To pass some time until our evening flight home, we decided to watch a movie here, and it was a nice time spent. Violet Crown Cinema has its own style and flair, making it stand out from chain cinemas. Once you enter the cinema, you purchase tickets on a screen right by the door, which was easy to use. Then there's a seating area where you can wait until you're allowed into the theater section, as there's a screen that indicates the countdown until you can enter the theater. When you're allowed inside, you just walk to your theater room, as indicated on the screen or ticket, and no one checks your ticket. I like that it's very independent, as staff was mostly there to help at the refreshment stands. As for refreshment stands, the offerings here were better than the average cinemas. Yes, they have popcorn, but they have actual sustenance that you can get, like sandwiches, salads, hearty appetizers, desserts, etc... They also had a full bar here. You're allowed to take your refreshments to the theater with you, but note that there is no table in the theater room, so may be difficult to eat entrees.
