We were looking for a late-night restaurant with a variety of options to satisfy my picky daughter, and we ended up at 24 Diner. From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome throughout our visit. My daughter and I both ordered the chicken fried chicken, and she substituted the collard greens for mac and cheese. The sausage gravy served with the chicken fried chicken was a little unexpected, but I actually enjoyed the subtle kick of spice it had. The collard greens weren't for me, but that's more of a personal preference since I've never been a fan. The mac and cheese, however, felt like it was missing something. Maybe it was the blend of cheeses, but it wasn't the classic, ooey-gooey diner-style mac and cheese we were hoping for. My brother ordered the chicken and waffles. The waffles had a fermented aroma and tangy flavor that caught us off guard. After speaking with the manager, she explained that they're made with a sourdough batter. While that may appeal to some people, it just wasn't his favorite. Overall, we had a good experience thanks to the outstanding service and welcoming atmosphere. The food simply didn't match our personal tastes. That said, the restaurant was absolutely packed, so they're clearly doing something right. I have lived in ATX for 40 years. Somehow just never made it to this place. The lady and I ordered hummus, chicken and waffles and the sweet potato hash. The hummus wasn't bad per se, just the combination of flavors didn't work for me. That's a me thing. Someone else might dig it. My lady ordered the chicken and waffles. She said it wasn't bad, the chicken was juicy. I had the abomination that was the sweet potato hash. The eggs were ordered over medium. Fruit was the side. The eggs were cooked over well, way over well. Ok. Things happen. The hash was not fresh at all. Really quite soggy. Ok, so guessing it may have been cooked a day or two prior to ordering. Not well prepared, but not the end of the world, right? Here's the thing: there was an unmistakable flavor of rubber and/or plastic. This was the predominant flavor. I simply couldn't eat it. Maybe a wrapper or some other foreign item was inadvertently added. The small dish of watermelon, strawberry and pineapple was ok. This, with tip, was $65.00 just had water to drink. Came on a Wed evening and it was pretty empty. For a second I thought they weren't open since there were no cars in the parking lot. When I walked in I as greeted and sat right away with drink order taken. They dropped the ice tea and gave me a few to decide what to order. Debated between the chicken fried chicken or chicken pot pie. They recommended the pot pie as the chicken fried chicken was quite large and more for volume vs the pot pie being a classic nostalgic dish. I got the pot pie and added a side of mashed potato's and gravy. Yum! The pot pie was decent, I would have preferred a piping hot temp wise, but it was alright. The puff pastry was massive on top and I broke into layers. The mashed potatoes were good and the gravy? Boy, that was the star of the show. I had a really solid dining experience at 24 Diner. I stopped by for lunch right before a flight. It was brunch time on a weekday so there weren't that many people dining in. They did have a few people who came to grab takeaway orders. The wait staff are really sweet and service was good. I ordered a mushroom swiss burger with fries. It was tasty. Hey, there's a diner next to the Waterloo records shop at 6th and Lamar. Seems to have adequate parking, if it's not too busy. Unfortunately, the food obtained here was excessively salty. The fries--a bit overcooked (dark yellow), and over salted; you'll swigging water or your beverage after eating a few. And that house sausage for which you should do yourself a favor and not order? Salt bomb. Bacon Avocado Burger? They asked how I wanted the meat cooked, so I request medium, but it came well-done... ok. I did enjoy the burger though, just not the fries that came with. As for the veggie hash? It was kind of nice with a slightly cheesy flavor. The egg was sunny side up, slightly runny, as requested. But the house-made sausage on the side? Please don't order that, as you'll regret it. Unless you love salt. I did taste herbs and spices within their house made sausage, but the salt was too much. I absolutely had to come back for their chicken and waffles classic, and to try their chocolate shake. The chicken tenders were juicy and the fluffy waffles were just perfect for anytime of the day. I have tried almost every dish on the menu, whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The food is like a big hug from grandma's house that only grandma knows. But somehow, the Chef's grandma must've given him the recipe, and he was so kind to share it with us. It's that deep southern home cook meal; it's the grits, biscuits, gravy, waffles, burgers, porkchop, meatloaf, desserts, and milkshakes. Now, that's just the beginning of the dishes, but you have that nice hospitality, too. The staff is naturally friendly; they greet you as soon as you come through the door. No waiting around here confused; someone is always talking to you, checking on you, explaining the dishes if you are a newcomer. The ambiance here is very relaxed. You'll see the families with the children, the growing friendships, and new couples here because it's just an all-around great place for us all. Now, I did miss seeing the upside-down Christmas tree hanging from the ceiling this season. Side note: Since I've been here several times before and know how quickly the line forms outside and how amazing the food is, I came extra early. West of the soul crushing I-35 and just across from the Whole Foods no one wanted, lies Austin's least kept secret: 24 Diner. As big believers in the idea that it's hard to mess up diner food, we were glad that 24 Diner was a step above what the average diner should be. The good: the food was pretty hit or miss, but it hit large when good and missed small when bad. The standout of the review was a French toast with citrus creme that just pulled all the flavors together into a fun and delicious breakfast dish. The biscuit on the side was flaky and buttery as well. The breakfast platter was solid (not a huge fan of cubed breakfast potato instead of traditional hash browns). The bacon lies on the softer side but isn't necessarily soggy. Lastly, the side of mac and cheese we ordered with the fried chicken sandwich (we'll get to that later) was absolutely phenomenal. The perfect amount of cheesy and crust from bread crumbs, just flat out delicious. The bad: when we say the food misses small we mean it. The chicken sandwich is extremely similar in taste to a Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich. While we do like the Popeyes chicken sandwich, it just feels unfortunate to eat something that aesthetically looks like an amazing sandwich but tastes like something I could get in a drive thru for half the price. The only other non good thing to be said about the food was that the sausage in the breakfast platter was a tad too salty, but to be fair to them that can come about from so many different things that we don't necessarily hold it against them. Additionally, the service was rocky. We called ahead to ask about the wait time for a party of 4 and were informed that it would be at least 30 minutes. We showed up 3 minutes later and were immediately seated. Call it a mistake or our inflated, aristocratic Yelper egos but we didn't appreciate that at all; to us it felt like they didn't want any extra people to come in. Also equally plausible that it was just misreading the occupancy, but I digress. When we were seated they rushed to get our table ready and forgot to include silverware, something they never noticed until we asked them to bring us some after our food had arrived. We understand that the workers are more than likely UT students trying to make a buck while being at school and we respect and don't necessarily blame them, we are just sharing how our experience was. It is also important to note that our food came out quickly and the waiter and others were friendly. The verdict: 24 Diner is a great diner that could use a bit of polishing on the service, but more than makes up for it with great food and a fun atmosphere.
