Came in on a whim from my hotel around the corner. What an awesome find! Cool little "underground" vibe but outdoor seating is available as well. So much of the menu looked great I had a hard time deciding, but went with my server (Mary-Grace) recommendation and got the Diablo. Excellent choice! A swing and a miss. I am so sorry I do not get the hype. We swung by after a long walk so we were in the mood for some good food with a homey/eclectic vibe. The service was fine, better when we first walked in than when we sat down. I ordered a chicken bacon ranch sub (blasphemous I know with all the breakfast options) because I figured you can't screw that up. It was small for the price, had little to no flavor, and the chicken chunks were just not it. Unique place near U of T to grab a sandwich and salad. The salads are the stars here and I would probably suggest to get a salad with protein and skip the sandwich/salad. Had the chicken salad sandwich and the chicken salad. The salad was fresh and came with dressing on the side which is always appreciated. The chicken salad was a tad salty and the bread needs to be a little heartier to hold up to the chicken salad. Service is good with the ordering at the front and the dishes brought to the table. Arturo's was the first place I ate at while I worked at the Texas Historical Commission. Love everything about. The coffee is bold but smooth, with unique flavors like cinnamon, salty caramel, cream. There's always the breakfast tacos which are great to take back to the office. Then if it's a weekend or holiday you can really tuck in, under the old garage where they've created a place that curates conversation and covers all the breakfast basics with a style unparalleled in anyplace else in downtown Austin. Arturo's is about as Austin as you'd expect! A tiny joint with a menu specifically curated to where I don't recommend making any substitutions and instead having things exactly as they intended! The staff are really chill and friendly, and helpful to boot. I don't recommend going with a crowd, as seating (both downstairs and outside) are limited, but if you can pop in alone or with a friend or two you are in for a treat. Both their breakfast and lunch options allow for meat eaters and vegetarians alike to enjoy. I didn't ask, but I didn't see any notes on the menu that you are able to substitute gluten free bread, but there are still a few gf options available. Definitely a place you'll have to walk to rather than drive, but that is par for the location. Overall a cute and quiet little gem right smack under a busy city! read more

Perfect breakfast- husband was parking car in a lot next to the restaurant- they were charging $20 or $25 - owner/ manager noticed us parking there and got us a parking spot on the street. (That parking lot is privately owned and price-gouges so find street parking.) Upon entering, we were welcomed in by the guy behind the counter - so nice! And then going downstairs- so cute! I loved the ambience and vibe. Breakfast was really good - we did the scrambles and u can't go wrong (potatoes could be cooked just slightly longer). Back again 6+ years later. This time, I arrived here during brunch on a Saturday instead of a random weekday morning. As a result, I experienced the brunch menu instead of the regular menu. Also, looks like some nice paint jobs were done in the dining room since 2019 and that there's proper wait service for brunch (whereas the breakfast I got was moreso ordering at the counter and eating downstairs). Back in 2019, I came for the jalapeno cheese bread. This time, I got it, but as part of the Eggs in a Hole. It was supremely good and made me reminisce for a moment. The basil pesto was a much appreciated addition to the bread. I also enjoyed the iced coffee. It was refreshing to enjoy it with the brunch. I was satisfied for the rest of the day. read more

When they say keep Austin weird, this is exactly what I had in mind. I was visiting Austin and staying at a nearby hotel and decided to step out to get some breakfast and find a space to get some work done on my laptop. This place came up on Yelp as a good work spot so I decided to walk over and give it a try. It wasn't too busy on a weekday mid-morning and the food was very quick to come out. I found it a bit pricey and that's coming from someone from CA, but that was fine. The servers were really kind and the food came out quickly. I found the breakfast I got on the greasy side but overall it was tasty. The seating is truly underground as you would expect from the name, but after being down there I realized it wasn't really a place I would like to sit down and work for hours due to the no windows thing. I learned after ordering that they didn't have wifi available anyway, so the listing I had found online stating that it was a good spot to work was incorrect (I can't remember where I found it, possibly Yelp?) I didn't stay too long and kind of got weirded out since the table I chose was facing some *ahem* unusual decor under the staircase. IYKYK. read more

I recently discovered this place with a colleague when we were searching for a place to grab a quick bite for lunch during our work day. The food here did not disappoint. For lunch we shared the Thai Chicken Salad ($14), which is a must. The dressing is so flavorful and a perfect compliment to the crunchy salad. We also got the SW Chicken Quesadilla ($14), which was filled with chicken, cheese, beans, corn. My only complaint is that it was too small because after eating my half, I wanted another one! The service is counter service. You order in the front, get a number, and then they bring the food out. The service was friendly and if you pay in cash, you get a cash discount! The ambiance is very "Austin." I don't know how else to describe it except that it has an Austin vibe. We sat in the small indoor seating area where it was dimly lit, but very crowded. Absolutely loved this place!!! The staff was sweet. The ambience was comforting and lots of locals. You grab your own refills and talk to people which is communal. And well the food was delicious. I just had two tacos (bean, bacon, avocado & bean, potato, chorizo) and a latte and was more than satisfied. So much so that I was craving it the next morning. Oh and one last thing. I bought the chocolate cookie for my son and forgot to give to him until the next day and it was still incredibly soft! It must have been a brownie cookie. read more

Must try if you're a breakfast or brunch lover! Stopped by Arturo's on a Saturday around 10 AM. The set-up of this place is really interesting as you go down steps to reach the entrance. General ambiance and design of the cafe is charming and kinda quirky with all the different decor. Good amount of seating inside. Our server was quick in taking our orders, but they were pretty busy and it took some time for us to get our food. Chinati ($17, 4.5/5) - The addition of the pulled pork, cheddar jack, and pico de gallo added complexity in terms of flavor to the tried and true combination of eggs, hollandaise sauce, English muffins - The pulled pork is slow cooked and really tender Diablo ($16, 5/5) - Features grilled jalapeño cheese bread, bacon, over easy eggs, chipotle hollandaise, pico de gallo, and home fries - This would be my favorite out of the 2! The cheese bread is really tasty and I liked the chipotle hollandaise. The home fries were seasoned well too. All in all, would recommend checking out Arturo's! The price is on the higher end for some dishes, but reasonable given the large portion sizes. The dishes are pretty rich & heavy though, so just be prepared that you might be in a food coma afterwards. read more

Arturo's is a hole in the wall with an unmistakable Austin charm. Highly recommend coming for brunch and trying their eggs Benedict! I tried the "clasico" which comes with black forest ham, classic hollandaise, and a side of home fried potatoes. It was delicious and very filling. I arrived on Saturday at 12 pm and there was a line of about 10 people, but it moved quickly and I was seated within 20 minutes. Service is quick and friendly. We got there right at 10 when they opened for weekend brunch, which was a good call because when we left at 10:40 AM there was already a line out the door. Everything we ordered was very tasty, and an affordable price. Service was very good too! It's a cozy place inside and definitely is underground as the name suggests. It was pretty chilly inside so bring a jacket if it's cold outside. Home fries were yum, and chipotle hollandaise was a highlight! I'd say 4.5 stars because of the fact that most of the benedict/breakfast options contained pork and they're not great about substitutions which restricted what i was able to order. You order as soon as you walk in to the small entry area where friendly man in a wifebeater tie dye t shirt takes your order on a small paper notepad no fancy electronics here~ ALAS the food was mediocre at BEST and it doesn't make me happy to say this.....we were there on a Tuesday am, I don't know IF a different cook than on the weekends as those reviews are certainly from different place than where we were. The breakfast sandwich was just OK, the whole wheat bread was toasted, but it was not hot, served cool ~ after the delicious sounding reviews I expected more also one reviewer commented the potatoes were an afterthought, he was right atleast on this day. My husband ordered the "Taterscape" again nothing special as the potatoes on my dish were "meh" so this dish was doomed from the start the crema & hot sauce on top couldn't save it. I wanted to try a new spit that had good breakfast/brunch and this place popped up. When you first check in they give an estimate of how long your wait will be and it was about 40min and because it was cold they said we could wait at the hilton hotel across the street which was very considerate. We went to park the vehicle in the Lot E parking garage 2nd level & up is free. (don't park in a reserve spot.) Once we parked we went to the hotel to wait for our call. Once they call you, you walk over and let them know your party was called. Then they seat you downstairs. This is a quaint little cafe spot with limited seating but the staff foes a great job taking care of everyone and with the time the food comes out. This place carries a cozy dim light type of vibe. I like it. Almost homey. I had the Caribbean Toast (yum!) and hubby had the Diablo scramble. He pretty much licked his plate clean and my toast was so delicious and wasn't too sweet. It had pecans and fried bananas on it. Love it. A good amount of toast comes on the plate, so if you're not a big eater and don't like leftovers get the half order. So tiny you need to wait for a table outside in the December wind. But we waited--not too long, cuz we got there early--and when we left many other people were waiting their turn. One can see why. Just descending the stairs to the underground little rooms, dark, and with interesting paintings on the walls, makes you feel like you're going to have a special experience. And we did. The servers are all impossibly friendly and attractive, in a kind of funky Austin way. The weekend brunch menu, while it has some classic brunch dishes, has its own special twists, and is just a little bit sassy--for example, in refusing to modify their carefully crafted Benedict dishes. On this cold morning, my friend oohed and ahhed over her mocha latte, which did look really good. She ordered the Mad Scramble, which was so tasty that she nearly scarfed it down before I had time to get a picture. I ordered a BLT. It was one of the best I've ever had--nice thick crispy slices of bacon, just enough tomato, (even though it wasn't especially ripe), some kind of spicy mayo, gorgeous green lettuce, all on amazing grilled jalapeño cheese bread. The chips and pickle were a nice touch as well. Apparently they don't like splitting tabs, so that was a little bit of a hassle. But for food like this--in such a cool little dark underground place--I can put up with a little bit of hassle. My 6 month old baby boy and I had breakfast there this morning and it was wonderful! The friendly and kind service, the delicious breakfast tacos, and the atmosphere were just perfect! I had my big ol' stroller and they kindly helped me find a place for it without any issues. The decor is so cute and cozy. Did I mention the food was DELICIOUS! The coffee too! One of the best hidden gems for breakfast in ATX. We enjoyed everything from the coffee drinks to the food. Service was prompt and friendly. The scene was moody, dark, and eclectic. I ordered the migas scramble + jalapeños, and it was truly one of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time. My man ordered the bacon jack, and he was equally pleased with his meal. We ordered a mocha and a cappuccino to drink, and for takeout, we got two caramel lattes. This was my second visit. I learned that the breakfast tacos are to go only. We ordered to go last time. I got the Peace and I think the Diablo tacos. Both were absolutely flavorful, nice portions, and drew us back. This time we dined in and ate at the outside tables. I ordered the Peace scramble. Breakfast fiesta! We loved our breakfast here. It's a wonderful hole in the wall restaurant that has a line on Sunday morning. You know it's amazing! We went after religious services and were in line by 9:45 so seated quickly. They open at 10. I loved my eggs benedict with avocados and bacon. Yummy potatoes were the perfect combo of salty and savory!! They have scrumptious pancakes with bananas too. Sort of a rum flavor too. Another person loves the pesto grilled cheese!
