First Light is such a neighborhood gem! The coffee is great, the staff is knowledgeable and passionate, and the space is so charming. The selection is a little limited but it's a great spot to find a new read or just work remotely. There's decent parking and space indoors and outdoors to read or work. Will definitely be back soon!

I've known about First Light for a while, since purchasing two cookbooks through them back in May at a Roy Choi x Aaron Franklin author event at the State/Paramount Theatres. I've used their lovely blue & gold bookmark since then. From the photos on Google, the store itself looked a bit outdated/older to me but when I actually walked through the door felt no such vibe. Perhaps it's the tiles/flooring that should still be updated, though! I wasn't coming in looking for anything, but of course left with an interesting book about the modern evolution of consumer culture via the lens of food/eating. They also answered my questions about their community book clubs. The onsite coffee shop, tables, and outdoor patio are all great places to catch up with friends or have your nose stuck inside the pages of a book.

First Light Books is one of my favorite third spaces in Austin! An incredible place with an extraordinary collection of books, and a cafe where you can get your coffee and matcha! There is a lot of seating outside, and some seating inside. The WiFi can be spotty at times. I love their curated selection of books they have, and love that they host a lot of community and author driven events. I recently got the Flat white and an iced matcha latte with oat and lavender. They have monthly drink specials, which I highly recommend trying too! They do charge extra for oat milk :(, but other than that, it's one of my favorite spots to grab coffee/matcha in Austin!

This is a cute little bookstore with a cafe and outdoor seating area. I was given a recommendation to study here, but it wasn't a great experience because their wifi wasn't working the whole time I was there. They serve wine in addition to coffee, tea, and pastries. The store is quite small and doesn't have a big selection, but it's still nice to browse around. There is a parking lot that was full when I went, so I found nearby street parking.

Hyde Park is one of the cutest areas in Austin. The strip on 43rd and Speedway is a prime example of the space. With the recently opened Allday Pizza and the cute Tiny Grocer, it's just a cool spot. The MVP of the area is the independent First Light Book Shop. There is plenty of great literature to be discovered at First Light. Inside, you are welcomed into a joint café-book shop that feels masterfully curated. The music feels strictly crate-dug, pulling songs from Numero and Light in the Attic compilations, and the atmosphere really helps enhance the vibe with the green walls, the red tiles on the floor, and the natural skylights illuminating the store. There are plenty of well-curated books, and the sections focusing on Music, Movies, and Travel have books I have never seen that look way more engaging than your standard books you'd find in those sections at that one category-killer store. Another benefit is their café. They have a great selection of coffee options as well as wine and a few beers on tap for those late-night readings. I find their cortado to be exceptional and a great espresso-forward beverage. They also have a great outdoor space perfect for reading, working, and just chatting with an espresso on a nice day. Other things to note: their café has an outdoor window that opens before the book shop, so the residents in the area can get a coffee to start their day. There are also plenty of events including jazz nights, crafts, book signings, and genrefied book clubs. Lastly, if you live in Austin proper and buy plenty of hardcover or paperback books and would rather support a local business, their $99 membership gives 20% off all purchases and also includes free drip coffee. I try to support cool places like First Light because their curation is out of this world, and as an avid reader, it's a no-brainer to enjoy a place more unique than your typical BAMs and B&Ns. RIYL: Cortados and paper with words on it.

This is a small local bookshop with a cafe inside. The parking can be a bit of a pain, but there's street parking and walking in Hydepark neighborhood is always nice. So you won't loose much if you can't find a spot. The cafe has great drink options. I got a Blood Orange Matcha Tonic. It was very refreshing and flavorful. The book selection is rather modest but they always have fresh releases and overall curation of the stock is very good. You can also get some fancy (and expensive) stationary there.

As soon as you turn around the corner of the street, it feels like you're entering that neighborhood public library that your entire neighborhood used to go to. The kind that you expect to run into someone you know. Parking might be a bit hard to find onsite, but you should be able to find some street parking near by and walk over. People of all age groups are here! Folks on a date, families with children etc. First Light is for anyone We were looking for a coffee shop to get some work done. I'd say it's not the most quiet place to get work done, but the vibes are here. Coffee prices are not outrageous, and there are plenty of seats and tables available, inside and outside, even on the Saturday we were there Maybe not the place to come and buy books, since the selection isn't as extensive as some other larger book stores, but one of those places that you go to that happens to have a book section, and maybe you end up finding something you like Will definitely come back here in the future!

This bookstore is quite cute! It is a little pricey (think Barnes and noble) and I didn't see a sale section, but it's homely and very "Austin." They have a little bar and I got a rosemary orange latte which was more orange than rosemary but I could taste both and the barista did a good job making it a little sweeter (which I asked for). They have some tables in the back where people were reading/hanging out, it has that vibe. They have a decent bit of parking out front, I got one of the last spots available when I came on Monday afternoon. Overall wish the books were a little lower priced/slightly bigger selection, but nonetheless the vibe is great! If it were closer to where I live maybe I'd go more often but given it's quite far, probably not.

Located in the Hyde Park neighborhood, First Light is primarily an adorable social gathering place masquerading as a nifty bookstore, serving an eclectic café menu housed within. Many people come for the cafe and stay for the bookstore vibe. Starting from early morning, and then all through the day, you'll find many people gathering on the gravel patio area out front of the store, chatting and catching up with one another over some beverage ordered from the cafe within. The cafe itself even has a pickup / ordering window facing the outside. But if you enter the building through the main entrance, with its large wooden door encasing a clear pane of glass, you'll be presented with their current display of promoted books. To your right will be the cafe area, and to the left will be bookshelves and some seating areas. There are a few book nooks and a children's area. The bathroom is near the checkout area. A popular location to sit is by the corner windows near the front, although the cafe area offers perhaps three tables. And if there is an even that First Light is hosting, you'll find arrays chairs set up. Their events are pretty nice, sometimes featuring bites, and definitely featuring visiting authors promoting their latest creations. Many times there will be a QA session. If you're hungry, and the cafe within doesn't suffice, there are two or three food options next door, depending on how you count. All Day Pizza doesn't offer gluten-free options for their slices next door, while Tiny Grocer gives off elevated convenience store vibes, hosting a cafe, deli (which also offers sandwiches) with the seating and patio area doing double-duty for Bureau de Post in the evening. Even if you keep your eyes wide open at First Light, on extremely busy days, you'll see their Wi-Fi performance degrade with DHCP requests going unanswered, or their cafe POS system slowing. But, such events shouldn't discourage you from visiting First Light. Parking can be tight during peak hours in the lots surrounding the store, but street parking is plentiful in the walkable, surrounding neighborhood.

Cute book store! A bit small but the drinks are good. The parking situation is not the best but you can always find residential street parking a couple blocks away

This is one of my favorite book stores in Austin. The inside is very cute with a few tables near the cafe area. I haven't tried any drinks at the cafe yet, but I did get their cheese and cracker plate, which comes with a surprisingly flavorful goat cheese. If you don't find a table inside, there is ample seating outside. There is usually a good amount of people working on laptops throughout the day. Their book selection is also great for the size of the shop. There is a lot of variety. I particularly enjoy their selection of art books. I would definitely stop by this store if you are a book lover or near the Hyde Park area. It is a true neighborhood gem.

First light was obviously curated by a bookworm! I love to sit in the window sill book nooks to read while sipping an Arnold Palmer. There's always fun events going on and their recommendations for books are always spot on!

This bookshop and the businesses attached are like a small upscale Mecca for the local Hyde Park residents. There's plenty of parking across the street or choose one of two dozen spots out front of the tiny grocer or next to the book store. When it's not scalding hot outside, many patrons choose to sit out by the street under the shady oaks with their laptops or under the awning with ceiling fans. Once inside this 2000 square-foot space you'll see a fantastic selection of books, but unlike half-price books, the books here are new, not used. Many of the books have informative staff critique cards on the shelves. These writeups certainly entice you to make a purchase. There are a few small tables inside and a comfy bench nook to sit down with a book and enjoy your coffee. The good news is that this place has more going for it than just books, for example I was pleased to see that they do have a draft beer + wine glass happy hour from 4 to 6 M-F. Or get a bottle for half price during that time. While you are here, pick up a copy of their calendar of events at the checkout. When you're done shopping here, you can pick up an "Allday" pizza next-door or shop at the Tiny Grocer next to it. Dogs are allowed here, just not inside. Informative photos included to get you through the door.

Still it sucks to see this going away. We came in, bought some books and browed a bit. They place had a fair amount of people, still quite a few books, music, and movies. I couldn't find much I was intersteied in but Shana did and even found me a book or two. The bathroom is weird, it is around a corner that looks like you are not allowed to go to and there is a key on a hanger that you take in with you, you don't need to unlock the door and I am not sure it even locks. If the key is missing that is how you know the bathroom has someone in it, there is a small hook on the inside to hang the key while you are in the restroom. So you have to hope people notice it is gone and you have to hope everyone puts the key back. But they are clean and they have a sign in the bathroom that the front desk can supply you with pads if needed. The one misstep here was the guy running the front desk, he was not super friendly, I heard his reaction to a lady gushing about how great the place was and how many books she found for such a good price, some were gifts and he could care less. He wasn't rude but he was doing that thing where you just nod and say uh huh. I also heard him later say he was from another branch of the library, I don't know which but I hope we don't run into him again. We got something like 7 or 8 books for 9 bucks which is fantastic. He checked us out fast, as he had better things to do and we headed out.

Let me start with - it's not a big place, and the selection isn't huge so it's not terribly likely you'll find something very specific, much less a popular title. However, it's a nice concept. They sell retired library books for VERY cheap, so if you're list looking for a new book in general, this is actually a pretty decent spot to get some and save money. They have a small lot out front but I had no trouble finding parking. The staff there were really friendly and helpful; they don't have a catalog because of all the turnover but they do have things arranged by genre so they could point me toward where I might find the book I was looking for.

It is not super big but it makes great use of the space it has tons of pre loved books, stickers, various gifts, oracle and Tarot cards, witches candles and so much more. SHANA SAYS: Super cute atmosphere, fun organizing of the books like pre loved, and lots of cute gift items. Plus a cat with its own hours! Kathy was super friendly and helpful. Made the whole experience better and is a genuine person. They do have a game room and a snack bar with free water as well as a keuring and snacks for sale. The bathroom is for everyone and they are very welcoming. Of course as an independent bookstore they have a wide variety of titles with some new books thrown in. They do mystery sells and bundles where you get a vague description of a book that is covered up and you take a chance. It should go without saying but as you are supporting local businesses the prices are a little higher the HPB or Amazon but it means more here and you should buy local when you can. I highly recommend this place. They even have a section where if you spend $50 you get to choose a free gift from books to sunglasses to other items. Go in, say hi to Kathy and The Cat!

I will start with the "downsides" (as few as they are). This place is pretty small. Like smaller than I thought. Because of this, its not the greatest place for browsing. They had some "witch" stuff which was interesting, but I was looking for a book. Also, most of the books are used which isn't terrible, but not exactly clear. As for the positives, this place is a true small business so you really get the personal touch when it comes to service. I also picked this place because it did a "blind book" service where they will pick out a book or two for you based on your description. A bunch of bookstores do this, but the Book Burrow understood the assignment exactly. They got me THREE books and all of them were PERFECT. I was surprised how they found my vibe and found me unique books! They also wrapped it in a beautiful paper and addressed it to me! It was like a little birthday gift to myself! As you can tell, I was very floored by the selections. This is the small business of small businesses so I am so HAPPY that I was able to stop by! While the place is small and their selection is in flux, I really appreciated the personal touch from the staff at The Book Burrow.
